We have used time-resolved x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to investigate the magnetization dynamics induced by nanosecond current pulses in NiFe/Cu/Co nanostripes. A large tilt of the NiFe magnetization in the direction transverse to the stripe is observed during the pulses. We show that this effect cannot be quantitatively understood from the amplitude of the Oersted field and the shape anisotropy. High frequency oscillations observed at the onset of the pulses are attributed to precessional motion of the NiFe magnetization about the effective field. We discuss the possible origins of the large magnetization tilt and the potential implications of the static and dynamic effects of the Oersted field on current-induced domain wall motion in such stripes.
We report on the criterion for the dynamic transformation of the internal structure of moving domain walls (DWs) in soft magnetic thin-film nanostripes above the Walker threshold field, Hw. In order for the process of transformation from transverse wall (TW) to vortex wall (VW) or antivortex wall (AVW) occurs, the edge-soliton core of the TW-type DW should grow sufficiently to the full width at half maximum of the out-of-plane magnetizations of the core area of the stabilized vortex (or antivortex) by moving inward along the transverse (width) direction. Upon completion of the nucleation of th…
We report on the switching of the in-plane magnetization of thin yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt bilayers induced by an electrical current. The switching is either field-induced and assisted by a dc current, or current-induced and assisted by a static magnetic field. The reversal of the magnetization occurs at a current density as low as $10^5$~A/cm$^{2}$ and magnetic fields of $\sim 40$~$μ$T, two orders of magnitude smaller than in ferromagnetic metals, consistently with the weak uniaxial anisotropy of the YIG layers. We use the transverse component of the spin Hall magnetoresistance to sense th…
A nonlinear model of spin-wave excitation involving a point contact in a thin ferromagnetic film that includes the Oersted magnetic field contribution is presented. We consider the case of an external dc field applied perpendicular to the film plane. The two-dimensional vectorial model reduces to an exact one-dimensional equation of motion. Large-amplitude vortex modes are computed, which represent a fundamental shift in the geometrical understanding of spin transfer nano-oscillators. Odd symmetry forces the magnetization to be pinned in the center of the point contact. Using the spin transfer…
We describe a method of controlling the spin wave spectra dynamically in a uniform nanostripe waveguide through spin-polarized currents. A stable periodic magnetization structure is observed when the current flows vertically through the center of nanostripe waveguide. After being excited, the spin wave is transmitted at the sides of the waveguide. Numerical simulations of spin-wave transmission and dispersion curves reveal a single, pronounced band gap. Moreover, the periodic magnetization structure can be turned on and off by the spin-polarized current. The switching process from full rejecti…
A model of spin torque induced magnetization dynamics based upon semi-classical spin diffusion theory for a single layer nanocontact is presented. The model incorporates effects due to the current induced Oersted field and predicts the generation of a variety of spatially dependent, coherent, precessional magnetic wave structures. Directionally controllable collimated spin wave beams, vortex spiral waves, and localized standing waves are found to be excited by the interplay of the Oersted field and the orientation of an applied field. These fields act as a spin wave ``corral'' around the nanoc…
Time-resolved X-ray microscopy is used to image the influence of alternating high-density currents on the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic vortices. Spin-torque induced vortex gyration is observed in micrometer-sized permalloy squares. The phases of the gyration in structures with different chirality are compared to an analytical model and micromagnetic simulations, considering both alternating spinpolarized currents and the current's Oersted field. In our case the driving force due to spin-transfer torque is about 70% of the total excitation while the remainder originates from the curr…
We present numerical simulation studies of the steady-state magnetization dynamics driven by a spin-polarized current in a point contact geometry for the case of a relatively large contact diameter (D = 80 nm) and small external field (H = 30 Oe). We show, that under these conditions the magnetization dynamics is qualitatively different from the dynamics observed for small contacts in large external fields. In particular, the 'bullet' mode with a homogeneous mode core, which was the dominating localized mode for small contacts, is not found here. Instead, all localized oscillation modes observ…
Magnetic properties of 2D systems of magnetic nanoobjects (2D regular lattices of the magnetic nanoparticles or magnetic nanostripes) are considered. The analytical calculation of the hysteresis curve of the system with interaction between nanoobjects is provided. It is shown that during the magnetization reversal system passes through a number of metastable states. The kinetic problem of the magnetization reversal was solved for three models. The following results have been obtained. 1) For 1D system (T=0) with the long-range interaction with the energy proportional to $r^{-p}$, the staircase…
Measuring local magnetization dynamics and its spatial variation is essential for advancements in spintronics and relevant applications. Here we demonstrate a phase-sensitive imaging technique for studying patterned magnetic structures based on picosecond laser heating. With the time-resolved anomalous Nernst effect (TRANE) and extensions, we simultaneously image the dynamic magnetization and RF driving current density. The stroboscopic detection implemented in TRANE microscopy provides access to both amplitude and phase information of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and RF current. Using this a…
We report the observation and micromagnetic analysis of current-driven magnetization switching in nanoscale ring-shaped magnetic tunnel junctions. When the electric current density exceeds a critical value of the order of $6\times 10^{6}$A/cm$^2$, the magnetization of the two magnetic rings can be switched back and forth between parallel and antiparallel onion states. Theoretical analysis and micromagnetic simulation show that the dominant mechanism for the observed current-driven switching is the spin torque rather than the current-induced circular Oersted field.
A study of transverse tail-to-tail magnetic domain walls (DW) in novel current perpendicular to the plane (CPP) spin valves (SV) of various dimensions is presented. For films with dimensions larger than the DW width, we find that DW motion can give rise to a substantial low frequency noise. For dimensions comparable to the DW width, we show that the DW can be controlled by an external field or by a spin momentum torque as opposed to the case of CPP-SV with uniform magnetization. It is shown that in a single domain biased CPP-SV, the spin torque can give rise to 1/f-type noise. The dipolar fiel…
An analytical model was developped to describe the current induced DW dynamics of a Bloch DW in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field. The model takes into account the DW deformation and the magnetization tilting in the domain. The model is compared to the results of micromagnetic simulation and an excellent agreement is obtained. In the steady state regime, the model shows that the domain tilting does not change the DW mobility. An external or current induced transverse magnetic field such as the Oersted or Rashba field can prevent the Walker breakdown leading to a higher doma…
Current induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in ferromagnet/non-magnetic metal heterostructures open vast possibilities to design spintronic devices to store, process and transmit information in a simple architecture. It is a central task to search for efficient SOT-devices, and to quantify the magnitude as well as the symmetry of current-induced spin-orbit magnetic fields (SOFs). Here, we report a novel approach to determine the SOFs based on magnetization dynamics by means of time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. A microwave current in a narrow Fe/GaAs (001) stripe generates an Oersted f…
Magnetic droplet soliton is a localized dynamic spin state which can serve as a nanoscale information carrier and nonlinear oscillator. The present opinion is that the formation of droplet solitons requires the compensation of magnetic damping by a torque created by a spin-polarized electric current or pure spin current. Here we demonstrate theoretically that nanoscale droplet solitons can be generated and routed in ferromagnetic nanostructures with voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in the presence of uncompensated magnetic damping. Performing micromagnetic simulations for the MgO/Fe/MgO …
We report on a highly efficient spin diode effect in an exchange-biased spin-valve giant magnetoresistance (GMR) strips. In such multilayer structures, symmetry of the current distribution along the vertical direction is broken and, as a result, a non-compensated Oersted field acting on the magnetic free layer appears. This field, in turn, is a driving force of magnetization precessions. Due to the GMR effect, resistance of the strip oscillates following the magnetization dynamics. This leads to rectification of the applied radio frequency current and induces a direct current voltage $V_{DC}$.…
Spin transport in electric conductors is largely determined by two material parameters - spin diffusion length and spin Hall angle. In metals, these are typically determined indirectly by probing magnetoresistance in magnet/metal heterostructures, assuming knowledge of the interfacial properties. We suggest profiling the charge current induced spin Hall spin accumulation in metals, via detection of the magnetic stray field generated by the associated static magnetization, as a direct means of determining spin transport parameters. We evaluate the spatial profile of the stray field as well as t…
We study the magnetization dynamics in a nanocontact magnetic vortex oscillators as function of temperature. Low temperature experiments reveal that the dynamics at low and high currents differ qualitatively. At low currents, we excite a temperature independent standard oscillation mode, consisting in the gyrotropic motion of a free layer vortex about the nanocontact. Above a critical current, a sudden jump of the frequency is observed, concomitant with a substantial increase of the frequency versus current slope factor. Using micromagnetic simulation and analytical modeling, we associate this…
Magnetic vortices are characterized by the senses of in-plane magnetization chirality and by the polarity of the vortex core. The electrical control of vortex polarity and chirality is highly demanded not only for fundamental understanding on spin dynamics in nano-disks under different circumstances, but also for technological applications, such as magnetic non-volatile memories and spin torque oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Here we report a novel approach that enables one to electrically control both the vortex chirality and polarity with low energy consumption. Thorough micromagneti…
