From BFSS matrix theory considerations, it is expected that a single D$_{p+2}$-brane action can be obtained from N D$_p$-brane action in large N limit. We examine and confirm this expectation by working out the details of DBI and Chern-Simons terms of D$_{p+2}$-brane action from D$_{p}$-brane action. We show that the same relation works for non-BPS, as well as BPS branes
We study the various head-on collisions of two bunches of D0-branes and their real-time evolution in the BFSS matrix model in classical limit. For a various matrix size N respecting the 't Hooft scaling, we find quantitative evidence for the formation of a single bound state of D0-branes at late time, which is matrix model thermalization and dual to the formation of a larger black hole.
We analyze fuzzy configurations of D0-branes in BFSS matrix model as microstates of black hole. Fuzzy configurations of D0-branes consist of localized fuzzy objects in 3 spatial directions which are smeared into 6 internal directions. Since the solutions are time dependent, these are non-BPS configurations and have internal energy compared with static case. Especially we examine the smeared fuzzy sphere in the BFSS matrix model, which will correspond to the microstate of the charged black hole in 4 dimensions, and compare the effective potential in that background with the result obtained by t…

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large $N$ limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing $N$ nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large $N$ M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with $N$ for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large $N$ expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum…
We find that the equations describing T-branes with constant worldvolume fields are identical to the equations found by Banks, Seiberg and Shenker twenty years ago to describe longitudinal five-branes in the BFSS matrix model. Besides giving new ways to construct T-brane solutions, this connection also helps elucidate the physics of T-branes in the regime of parameters where their worldvolume fields are larger than the string scale. We construct explicit solutions to the Banks-Seiberg-Shenker equations and show that the corresponding T-branes admit an alternative description as Abelian branes …

We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter regio…
We test the background geometry of the BFSS model using a D4-brane probe. This proves a sensitive test of the geometry and we find excellent agreement with the D4-brane predictions based on the solution of a membrane corresponding to the D4-brane propagating on this background.
We study one-loop effective action of Berkooz-Douglas Matrix theory and obtain non-abelian action of D0-branes in the background field produced by longitudinal 5-branes. Since these 5-branes do not have D0-brane charge and are not present in BFSS Matrix theory, our analysis can be regarded as an independent test for the coupling of D-branes to general weak backgrounds proposed by Taylor and Van Raamsdonk, and also as a check of consistency between the two versions of Matrix theory. The coupling to the 5-branes which we obtain is basically consistent with the previous proposal, but we point out…
I attempt to give a pedagogical introduction to the matrix model of M-theory as developed by Banks, Fischler, Shenker and Susskind (BFSS). In the first lecture, I introduce and review the relevant aspects of D-branes with the emergence of the matrix model action. The second lecture deals with the appearance of eleven-dimensional supergravity and M-theory in strongly coupled type IIA superstring theory. The third lecture combines the material of the two previous ones to arrive at the BFSS conjecture and explains the evidence presented by these authors. The emphasis is not on most recent develop…
We construct a solution of the BFSS matrix theory, which is a counterpart of the BIon solution representing a fundamental string ending on a bound state of a D2-brane and D0-branes. We call this solution the `fuzzy BIon' and show that this configuration preserves 1/4 supersymmetry of type IIA superstring theory. We also construct an effective action for the fuzzy BIon by analyzing the nonabelian Born-Infeld action for D0-branes. When we take the continuous limit, with some conditions, this action coincides with the effective action for the BIon configuration.
Solutions of the undeformed IKKT matrix model with structure R^{3,1} x K are presented, where the noncommutativity relates the compact with the non-compact space. The extra dimensions are stabilized by angular momentum, and the scales of K are generic moduli of the solutions. Explicit solutions are given for K= T^2, K= T^4, K = S^2 x T^2 and K = S^2 x S^2. Infinite towers of Kaluza-Klein modes may arise in some directions, along with an effective UV cutoff on the non-compact space. Deformations of these solutions carry NC gauge theory coupled to (emergent) gravity. Analogous solutions of the B…
We propose type IIA supergravity solutions dual to the 1/2 BPS vacua of the BMN matrix model. These dual solutions are analyzed using the Polchinski-Strassler method and have brane configurations of concentric shells of D2 branes (or NS5 branes) with various radii and D0 charge. These branes can be viewed as polarized from $N$ D0 branes by a transverse R-R magnetic 6-form flux and an NS-NS 3-form flux. In the region far from branes, the solutions reduce to perturbation around the near horizon geometry of $N$ D0 branes, by turning on these R-R and NS-NS fluxes, which are dual to the deformation…
We study covariant open bosonic string field theories on multiple $Dp$-branes by using the deformed cubic string field theory which is equivalent to the string field theory in the proper-time gauge. Constructing the Fock space representations of the three-string vertex and the four-string vertex on multiple $Dp$-branes, we obtain the field theoretical effective action in the zero-slope limit. On the multiple $D0$-branes, the effective action reduces to the Banks-Fishler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model. We also discuss the relation between the open string field theory on multiple $D$-insta…
Taking seriously the hypothesis that the full symmetry algebra of M-theory is osp(1|32,R), we derive the supersymmetry transformations for all fields that appear in 11- and 12-dimensional realizations and give the associated SUSY algebras. We study the background-independent osp(1|32,R) cubic matrix model action expressed in terms of representations of the Lorentz groups SO(10,2) and SO(10,1). We explore further the 11-dimensional case and compute an effective action for the BFSS-like degrees of freedom. We find the usual BFSS action with additional terms incorporating couplings to transverse …
Starting from the Schild action for membrane, we present an alternative formulation of Matrix Theory. First of all, we construct the Schild action for general bosonic p-brane which is classically equivalent to the Nambu-Goto action for p-brane. Next, based on the constraint obtained from the variational equation for the auxiliary field in the case of $p = 2$ (membrane), we construct a new matrix model which is closely related to the matrix model of M-theory as developed by Banks, Fischler, Shenker and Susskind (BFSS). Our present formulation is a natural extension of the construction of type I…
We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large $N$ and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller…
We investigate the D0-D4-brane system for different B-field backgrounds including the small instanton singularity in noncommutative SYM theory. We discuss the excitation spectrum of the unstable state as well as for the BPS D0-D4 bound state. We compute the tachyon potential which reproduces the complete mass defect. The relevant degrees of freedom are the massless (4,4) strings. Both results are in contrast with existing string field theory calculations. The excitation spectrum of the small instanton is found to be equal to the excitation spectrum of the fluxon solution on R^2_theta x R which…
We study $SO(m)$ covariant Matrix realizations of $ \sum_{i=1}^{m} X_i^2 = 1 $ for even $m$ as candidate fuzzy odd spheres following hep-th/0101001. As for the fuzzy four sphere, these Matrix algebras contain more degrees of freedom than the sphere itself and the full set of variables has a geometrical description in terms of a higher dimensional coset. The fuzzy $S^{2k-1} $ is related to a higher dimensional coset $ {SO(2k) \over U(1) \times U(k-1)}$. These cosets are bundles where base and fibre are hermitian symmetric spaces. The detailed form of the generators and relations for the Matrix …
The D2brane-anti-D2brane system is described in the framework of BFSS Matrix model and noncommutative (NC) gauge theory. The physical spectrum of fields is found by appropriate gauge fixing. The exact tachyon potential is computed in terms of these variables and an exact description of tachyon condensation provided. We exhibit multiple vortex production with increasing topological charge and interpret this as gradual conversion of the brane-antibrane system to $D0$ branes. The entire analysis is carried out using the known hamiltonian of the Matrix model, which is equivalent to the hamiltonian…

We investigate the correspondence between the D2-brane, which is described by the abelian Born-Infeld action, and multiple D0-branes, which are done by the nonabelian Born-Infeld action. We construct effective actions for the fuzzy cylinder, sphere and plane formed via D0-branes and compare these actions with those for the cylindrical, spherical and planar D2-brane. We show that in the continuous limit, the effective actions for the fuzzy D0-branes precisely coincide with those for the single D2-brane if both the fuzziness of the D0-brane and the area occupied per a unit of magnetic flux on th…
We construct the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configurations corresponding to the various N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. The D6-branes are both displaced and rotated where these deformations are described as the mass term and quartic term for the fundamental flavors respectively. The multiplicity of the NS5-branes occurs in the superpotential order for adjoint, symmetric, or bifundamental matters. A rich pattern of nonsupersymmetric meta-stable states as well as the supersymmetric stable states is found.
We give a classification of all multiple intersections of D-branes in ten dimensions and M-branes in eleven dimensions that corresponds to threshold BPS bound states. The residual supersymmetry of these composite branes is determined. By dimensional reduction composite p-branes in lower dimensions can be constructed. We emphasize in dimensions D greater or equal than two, those solutions which involve a single scalar and depend on a single harmonic function. For these extremal branes we obtain the strength of the coupling between the scalar and the gauge field. In particular we give a D-brane …
Starting from an N=1 supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group and the bifundamentals, we apply Seiberg dual to each gauge group, obtain the N=1 supersymmetric dual magnetic gauge theories with dual matters including the gauge singlets. Then we describe the intersecting brane configurations, where there are NS-branes and D4-branes(and anti D4-branes), of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of this gauge theory. We also discuss the case where the orientifold 4-planes are added into the above brane configuration. Next, …
We develop superembedding approach to multiple D-particle (D0-brane) system. In flat target D=10 type IIA superspace this produces the supersymmetric and Lorentz covariant version of the Matrix model equations. The equations following from our superembedding approach to multiple D0 in curved type IIA superspace shows the Myers 'dielectric brane effect', i.e. interaction with higher form gauge fields which do not interact with a single D0-brane.
We calculate the fluctuations from the classical multiple M5-brane solution of ABJM action which we found in the previous paper. We obtain D4-brane-like action but the gauge coupling constant depends on the spacetime coordinate. This is consistent with the expected properties of M5-brane action, although we will need to take into account the monopole operators in order to fully understand M5-branes. We also see that the Nambu-Poisson bracket is hidden in the solution.
We study the detail derivation of the multiple D2-brane effective action from multiple M2-branes in the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory and the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory by employing the novel Higgs mechanism. We show explicitly that the high-order F^3 and F^4 terms are commutator terms, and conjecture that all the high-order terms are commutator terms. Because the commutator terms can be treated as the covariant derivative terms, these high-order terms do not contribute to the multiple D2-brane effective action. Inspired by the derivation of a single D2-brane fro…
We study multiple 3-branes on an F theory orientifold. The world-volume theory of the 3-branes is d=4, N=2 Sp(2k) gauge theory with an antisymmetric tensor and four flavors of matter in the fundamental. The solution of this gauge theory is found for vanishing bare mass of the antisymmetric tensor matter, and massive fundamental matter. The integrable system underlying this theory is constructed.
Recently a three-dimensional field theory was derived that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of the worldvolume action for multiple M2-branes. In this note we examine several physical predictions of this model and show that they are in agreement with expected M2-brane dynamics. In particular, we discuss the quantization of the Chern-Simons coefficient, the vacuum moduli space, a massive deformation leading to fuzzy three-sphere vacua, and a possible large n limit. In this large n limit, the fuzzy funnel solution correctly reproduces the mass of an M5-brane.
In this paper, we study the actions of the Weyl groups of the U duality groups for type IIA string theory toroidally compactified to all dimensions $D\ge 3$. We show how these Weyl groups implement permutations of the field strengths, and we discuss the Weyl group multiplets of all supersymmetric $p$-brane solitons.
We study splitting and joining interactions of giant gravitons with angular momenta $N^{1/2}\ll J\ll N$ in the type IIB string theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ by describing them as instantons in the tiny graviton matrix model introduced by Sheikh-Jabbari. At large $J$ the instanton equation can be mapped to the four-dimensional Laplace equation and the Coulomb potential for $m$ point charges in an $n$-sheeted Riemann space corresponds to the $m$-to-$n$ interaction process of giant gravitons. These instantons provide the holographic dual of correlators of all semi-heavy operators and the instanton…
In previous work we proposed a field theory model for multiple M2-branes based on an algebra with a totally antisymmetric triple product. In this paper we gauge a symmetry that arises from the algebra's triple product. We then construct a supersymmetric theory that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of a multiple M2-brane theory: 16 supersymmetries, conformal invariance, and an SO(8) R-symmetry that acts on the eight transverse scalars. The gauge field is not dynamical. The result is a new type of maximally supersymmetric gauge theory in three dimensions.
We study D-branes in SU(2) WZW model by means of the boundary state techniques. We realize the ``fuzzy sphere'' configuration of multiple D0-branes as the boundary state with the insertion of suitable Wilson line. By making use of the path-integral representation we show that this boundary state preserves the appropriate boundary conditions and leads to the Cardy state describing a spherical D2-brane under the semi-classical approximation. This result directly implies that the spherical D2-brane in SU(2) WZW model can be well described as the bound state of D0-branes. After presenting the supe…
In a six dimensional brane world model with multiple $S_1/Z_2$ warping, two of the 4-branes at the boundaries have coordinate dependent brane tensions in order to implement the orbifolded boundary conditions consistently. Such brane tension is shown to be equivalent to a scalar field distribution on the brane [1]. We show that in such a scenario a masslesss left chiral fermion on the 4-brane localizes naturally on the standard model 3-brane located at one edge of the compact manifold while the massless right chiral fermion wave function as well as the wave functions for the massive fermion mod…
We develop a formalism that allows us to write actions for multiple D-branes with manifest general covariance. While the matrix coordinates of the D-branes have a complicated transformation law under coordinate transformations, we find that these may be promoted to (redundant) matrix fields on the transverse space with a simple covariant transformation law. Using these fields, we define a covariant distribution function (a matrix generalization of the delta function which describes the location of a single brane). The final actions take the form of an integral over the curved space of a scalar…
We present the light-cone gauge fixed Lagrangian for the M5-brane; it has a residual `exotic' gauge invariance with the group of 5-volume preserving diffeomorphisms, SDiff(5), as gauge group. For an M5-brane of topology R2 x M3, for closed 3-manifold M3, we find an infinite tension limit that yields an SO(8)-invariant (1+2)-dimensional field theory with `exotic' SDiff(3) gauge invariance. We show that this field theory is the Carrollian limit of the Nambu bracket realization of the `BLG' model for multiple M2-branes.
We investigate the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model associated with the Nambu-Poisson algebra as a theory describing a single M5-brane. We argue that the model is a gauge theory associated with the volume-preserving diffeomorphism in the three-dimenisonal internal space. We derive gauge transformations, actions, supersymmetry transformations, and equations of motions in terms of six-dimensional fields. The equations of motions are written in gauge-covariant form, and the equations for tensor fields have manifest self-dual structure. We demonstrate that the double dimensional reduction of the mo…
We study the SO(8) superconformal theory proposed recently by Bagger and Lambert as a possible worldvolume theory for multiple M2-branes. For their explicit example with gauge group SO(4), we rewrite the theory (originally formulated in terms of a three-algebra) as an ordinary SU(2) \times SU(2) gauge theory with bifundamental matter. In this description, the parity invariance of the theory, required for a proper description of M2-branes, is clarified. We describe the subspace of scalar field configurations on which the potential vanishes, and note that this does not coincide with the moduli s…
A generalization of Nahm's equation has been recently conjectured by Basu and Harvey to be the BPS condition describing the bound state of a stack of M2-branes ending on an M5-brane. In this note exact solutions are presented for the proposed BPS equation - which is from the point of view of the M2-brane world-volume dynamics - with boundary conditions appropriate for M2-branes stretching between two M5-branes. Unfortunately, since the action for multiple M5-branes or for multiple coincident M2-branes is not known, one can only resort to consistency checks of the proposal instead of a direct c…
We propose an oblique DLCQ as a limit to realize a theory of multiple M2-branes in M(atrix)-theory context. The limit is a combination of an infinite boosting of a space-like circle and a tuned tilting of the circle direction. We obtain a series of supergravity solutions describing various dual configurations including multiple M2-branes. For an infinite boosting along a circle wrapped obliquely around a rectangular torus, Seiberg's DLCQ limit distorts the torus modulus. In the context of supergravity, we show explicitly how this torus modulus of $\widetilde{\text M}$-theory is realized as the…
We have constructed a complete action for the system of N D0-branes in flat 10D type IIA superspace. It is invariant under the rigid spacetime supersymmetry and local worldline supersymmetry ($κ$-symmetry). This latter can be considered as supersymmetry of maximal 1d SU(N) SYM model which is made local by coupling to supergravity induced by embedding of the center of energy worldline into the target superspace. The spinor moving frame technique is essentially used to achieve such a coupling. We discuss the differences with Panda-Sorokin multiple 0-brane action and with the dimensionally reduce…
A supersymmetric non-Abelian self-dual gauge theory with the explicit introduction of Kaluza-Klein modes is proposed to give a classical description of multiple M5-branes on $R^5 \times S^1$. The gauge symmetry is parametrized by Lie-algebra valued 1-forms with the redundancy of a 0-form, and the supersymmetry transformations without gauge-fixing are given. We study BPS configurations involving KK modes, including M-waves and M2-branes with non-trivial distributions around the circle. Finally, this supersymmetric gauge theory of two-forms can be equipped with more general non-Abelian gerbes in…
A sliver state is a classical solution of the string field theory of the tachyon vacuum that represents a background with a single D25-brane. We show that the sliver wavefunctional factors into functionals of the left and right halves of the string, and hence can be naturally regarded as a rank-one projector in a space of half-string functionals. By developing an algebraic oscillator approach we are able construct higher rank projectors that describe configurations of multiple D-branes of various dimensionalities and located at arbitrary positions. The results bear remarkable similarities with…
We reexamine the N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with product gauge groups by adding the mass terms and the quartic terms for the flavors: two gauge group theory with fundamentals, bifundamentals and adjoints, three gauge group theory with fundamentals and bifundamentals, and their orientifold 4-plane generalizations. By moving the branes appropriately, we obtain the corresponding dual gauge theories. By analyzing the dual superpotentials, we present the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configurations.
We present a new approximation method for solving the equations of motion for cosmological tensor perturbations in a Randall-Sundrum brane-world model of the type with one brane in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. This method avoids the problem of coordinate singularities inherent in some methods. At leading order, the zero-mode solution replicates the evolution of perturbations in a four-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe in the absence of any tensor component to the matter perturbation on the brane. At next order, there is a mode-mixing effect, although, importantly,…
A nonlinear SO(8) invariant BF type Lagrangian for describing the dynamics of N M2-branes in flat spacetime has been proposed recently in the literature which is an extension of the non-abelian DBI action of N D2-branes. This action includes only terms with even number of the totally antisymmetric tensor M^{IJK}. We argue that the action should contain terms with odd number of M^{IJL} as well. We modify the action to include them.
Based on recent developments, in this letter we study the one parameter deformation of 2+1 dimensional gauge theories with scale invariance and N = 8 supersymmetry, which is expected to be the field theory living on a stack of M2 branes. The deformed gauge theory is defined by a Lagrangian and is based on an infinite set of novel 3-algebras constructed by relaxing the assumption that the invariant metric is positive definite. Under the Higgs mechanism, we can obtain the D-branes world volume theory in the presence of background fluxes.
We show that the requirement of Poincare invariance (more specifically invariance under boosts/rotations that mix brane directions with transverse directions) places severe constraints on the form of actions describing multiple D-branes, determining an infinite series of correction terms to the currently known actions. For the case of D0-branes, we argue that up to field redefinitions, there is a unique Lorentz transformation rule for the coordinate matrices consistent with the Poincare algebra. We characterize all independent Poincare invariant structures by describing the leading term of eac…
We present a gauge-fixed M 5-brane action: a 6-dimensional field theory of a self-interacting (0,2) tensor multiplet with 32 worldvolume supersymmetries. The quadratic part of this action is shown to be invariant under rigid OSp(6,2|4) superconformal symmetry, with 16 supersymmetries and 16 special supersymmetries. We explore a deep relation between the superconformal symmetry on the worldvolume of the brane and symmetry of the near horizon anti-de Sitter infinite throat geometry of the M 5-brane in space-time.
We study one-loop effective action of Berkooz-Douglas Matrix theory and obtain non-abelian action of D0-branes in the longitudinal 5-brane background. In this paper, we extend the analysis of hep-th/0201248 and calculate the part of the effective action containing fermions. We show that the effective action is manifestly invariant under the loop-corrected SUSY transformation, and give the explicit transformation laws. The effective action consists of blocks which are closed under the SUSY, and includes the supersymmetric completion of the couplings to the longitudinal 5-branes proposed by Tayl…
Due to the difficulties of finding superconformal Lagrangian theories for multiple M2-branes, we will in this paper instead focus on the field equations. By relaxing the requirement of a Lagrangian formulation we can explore the possibility of having structure constants $f^{ABC}{}_D$ satisfying the fundamental identity but which are not totally antisymmetric. We exemplify this discussion by making use of an explicit choice of a non-antisymmetric $f^{ABC}{}_D$ constructed from the Lie algebra structure constants $f^{ab}{}_c$ of an arbitrary gauge group. Although this choice of $f^{ABC}{}_D$ doe…
