We present an ab-initio density function theory to investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of the bilayer graphene with intercalated atoms C, N, and O. The intercalated atom although initially positioned at the middle site of the bilayer interval will finally be adsorbed to one graphene layer. Both N and O atoms favor the bridge site (i.e. above the carbon-carbon bonding of the lower graphene layer), while the C atom prefers the hollow site (i.e. just above a carbon atom of the lower graphene layer and simultaneously below the center of a carbon hexagon of the upper layer). Concerning the magnetic property, both C and N adatoms can induce itinerant Stoner magnetism by introducing extended or quasilocalized states around the Fermi level. Full spin polarization can be obtained in N-intercalated system and the magnetic moment mainly focuses on the N atom. In C-intercalated system, both the foreign C atom and some carbon atoms of the bilayer graphene are induced to be spin-polarized. N and O atoms can easily get electrons from carbon atoms of bilayer graphene, which leads to Fermi level shifting downward to valence band and thus producing the metallic behavior in bilayer graphene.
We have investigated the atomic structure of superconducting Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene on a SiC(0001) substrate using total-reflection high-energy positron diffraction. By comparing the experimental rocking-curves with ones calculated for various structural models using a full-dynamical theory, we have found that Ca atoms are intercalated in the graphene-buffer interlayer, rather than between the two graphene layers. From transport measurements, the superconducting transition was observed to be at Tc_onset = 4K for this structure. This study is the first to clearly identify the relation…
We measure the adsorption height of hydrogen-intercalated quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene on the (0001) face of 6H silicon carbide by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. A density functional calculation for the full ($6 \sqrt{3} \times 6 \sqrt{3}$)-R30$^\circ$ unit cell, based on a van der Waals corrected exchange correlation functional, finds a purely physisorptive adsorption height in excellent agreement with experiments, a very low buckling of the graphene layer, a very homogeneous electron density at the interface and the lowest known adsorption energy per atom for g…
The moiré superstructure of graphene grown on metals can drive the assembly of molecular architectures, as iron-phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules, allowing for the production of artificial molecular configurations. A detailed analysis of the Gr/Co interaction upon intercalation (including a modelling of the resulting moiré pattern) is performed here by density functional theory, which provides an accurate description of the template as a function of the corrugation parameters. The theoretical results are a preliminary step to describe the interaction process of the FePc molecules adsorption on t…
Molecules intercalating two-dimensional (2D) materials form complex structures that have been mostly characterized by spatially averaged techniques. Here we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations to study the atomic structure of bilayer graphene (BLG) and few-layer graphene (FLG) intercalated with FeCl$_3$. In BLG we discover two distinct intercalated structures that we identify as monolayer-FeCl$_3$ and monolayer-FeCl$_2$. The two structures are separated by atomically sharp boundaries and induce large but different …
We have performed an \it {ab initio} investigation of transition metals (TMs = Mo, Ru, Co, and Pt) embedded in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) layers. Our total energy results reveal that, triggered by the misalignment between the graphene layers, Mo and Ru atoms may form a quasi-periodic (triangular) array of intercalated atoms. In contrast, the formation of those structures is not expected for the other TMs, Co and Pt atoms. The net magnetic moment (m) of Mo and Ru atoms may be quenched upon intercalation, depending on the stacking region (AA or AB). For instance, we find a magnetic moment of…
Graphene intercalation materials are potentially promising for the implementation of the ultra-low power, excitonic-condensate-based Bilayer pseudoSpin Field-Effect Transistor (BiSFET) concept, as well as other novel device concepts requiring a graphene interlayer dielectric. Using density functional theory (DFT) we study the structural and electronic properties of bilayer graphene intercalated with iodine monochloride (ICl) and iodine monobromide (IBr). We determine the structural configuration of ICl and IBr graphene intercalation compounds (GICs). We also conduct an in-depth exploration of …
Our first-principles calculations show that an energy gap around 0.12-0.25 eV can be engineered in epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) through the non-covalent intercalation of transition- or alkali-metals, yet originated from the distinct mechanisms. The former is attributed to the combined effects of metal induced perpendicular electric field and interaction while the latter is solely attributed to the built-in electric field. A great advantage of this scheme is that the gap size is almost independent of the gate voltage up to 1 V/nm, thus reserving the electric means to tune the Fermi level of …
We perform a femtosecond-THz optical pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the cooling dynamics of hot carriers in quasi-free standing bilayer epitaxial graphene. We observed longer decay time constants, in the range of 2.6 to 6.4 ps, compared to previous studies on monolayer graphene, which increase nonlinearly with excitation intensity. The increased relaxation times are due to the decoupling of the graphene layer from the SiC substrate after hydrogen intercalation which increases the distance between graphene and substrate. Furthermore, our measurements do not show that the supercollision …
Modern nanoscience has focused on two-dimensional (2D) layer structure materials which have garnered tremendous attention due to their unique physical, chemical and electronic properties since the discovery of graphene in 2004. Recent advancement in graphene nanotechnology opens a new avenue of creating 2D bilayer graphene (BLG) intercalates. Using first-principles DFT techniques, we have designed 20 new materials \textit{in-silico} by intercalating first row transition metals (TMs) with BLG, i.e. 10 layered structure and 10 bulk crystal structures of TM intercalated in BLG. We investigated th…
This study examines the potential of superconductivity in transition metal (TM) intercalated bilayer graphene through a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic properties. We determine the electronic structure for all first row TM elements in the stable honeycomb configuration between two layers of graphene using density functional theory (DFT). Through an analysis of the electron density, we assess the induction of the magnetic moment in each case, where a comparison of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic configurations allow us to ascertain an estimated exchange coupling between …
First-principles calculations of the electronic structure and vibrational modes, in a system of graphene bilayers and trilayers intercalated with alkaline earth atoms, are resented. It is found that, in similarity to the case of superconducting graphite intercalation compounds, the Fermi level is crossed by an s-band derived from the intercalant states, as well as graphitic pi-bands. The electron-phonon coupling parameter is found to be 0.60 and 0.80, respectively, in calcium intercalated graphene bilayers and trilayers. In superconducting CaC6 graphite intercalation compound, the calculated v…
Mo$X_2$ ($X$=S or Se) is a semiconductor family with two-dimensional structure. And a recent calculation predicted the superconductivity in electron doped MoS$_2$ monolayer. In this work, the electronic structure and lattice dynamics of Mo$X_2$ bilayers with monolayer Na intercalated, have been calculated. According to the electron-phonon interaction, it is predicted that these bilayers can be transformed from indirect-gap semiconductors to a superconductors by Na intercalation. More interestingly, the biaxial tensile strain can significantly enhance the superconducting temperature up to $\sim…
We investigate the optical properties of bromine intercalated highly orientated pyrolytic graphite (Br-HOPG) and provide a novel interpretation of the data. We observe new absorption features below 620 meV which are absent in the absorption spectrum of graphite. Comparing our results with those of theoretical studies on graphite, single and bilayer graphene as well as recent optical studies of multilayer graphene, we conclude that Br-HOPG contains the signatures of ultrapure bilayer, single layer graphene, and graphite. The observed supermetallic conductivity of Br-HOPG is identified with the …
Bilayer graphene (BLG) is semiconductor whose band gap and properties can be tuned by various methods such as doping or applying gate voltage. Here, we show how to tune electronic properties of BLG by intercalation of transition metal (TM) atoms between two monolayer graphene (MLG) using a novel dispersion-corrected first-principle density functional theory approach. We intercalated V, Nb, and Ta atoms between two MLG. We found that the symmetry, the spin, and the concentration of TM atoms in BLG-intercalated materials are the important parameters to control and to obtain a Dirac Cone in their…
The AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) is a pure semiconductor whose band gap and properties can be tuned by various methods such as doping or applying gate voltage. Here we show an alternative method to control the electronic properties of BLG; intercalation of transition metal atoms between the two monolayers graphene (MLG). A theoretical investigation has been performed on two-dimensional MLG, BLG, BLG-intercalated nanostructured materials, all of which are energetically stable. Our study reveals that only MLG and BLG-intercalated with one Vanadium (V) atom (BLG-1V) materials have a Dirac Co…

Based on first-principles and tight-binding calculations, we report that the transport properties of topological edge states of zigzag Bi(111) nanoribbon can be significantly tuned by H edge adsorption. The Fermi velocity is increased by one order of magnitude, as the Dirac point is moved from Brillouin zone boundary to Brillouin zone center and the real-space distribution of Dirac states are made twice more delocalized. These intriguing changes are explained by an orbital filtering effect of edge H atoms, which removes certain components of $p$ orbits of edge Bi atoms that reshapes the topolo…
One popular approach to prepare graphene is to grow them on transition metal substrates via chemical vapor deposition. By using the density functional theory with dispersion correction, we systematically investigate for the first time the interfacial properties of bilayer (BLG) and trilayer graphene (TLG) on metal substrates. Three categories of interfacial structures are revealed. The adsorption of B(T)LG on Al, Ag, Cu, Au, and Pt substrates is a weak physisorption, but a band gap can be opened. The adsorption of B(T)LG on Ti, Ni, and Co substrates is a strong chemisorption, and a stacking-in…
Lightweight 2D materials due to its large surface area are being studied for its hydrogen storage applications. The characteristics of hydrogen adsorption on the electric field-induced h-BN bilayer were investigated. The overall storage capacity of the bilayer is 6.7 wt% from our theoretical calculation with E ads of 0.308 eV/H$_2$. The desorption temperature for H$_2$ molecules from the h-BN bilayer system in the absence of an external electric field is 243 K. With the introduction of an external electric field, the E$_{\rm ads}$ lies in the range 0.311-0.918 eV/H$_2$ with a desorption temper…
We investigate the structural and electronic properties of Li-intercalated monolayer graphene on SiC(0001) using combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory. Li intercalates at room temperature both at the interface between the buffer layer and SiC and between the two carbon layers. The graphene is strongly $n$-doped due to charge transfer from the Li atoms and two $π$-bands are visible at the $\bar{K}$-point. After heating the sample to 300$^\circ$C, these $π$-bands become sharp and have a distinctly different dispersion to that of Bernal-…

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations are performed to study hydrogen physisorption in different nano carbon porous materials made up of different substructures including carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene sheets and C60. Hydrogen weight percentage (wt%) at different temperatures with pressure ranging from 1 to 20MPa are predicted. Fugacity and quantum effects on hydrogen adsorption are investigated. Different structural dimensions including the sizes of the substructures and spacing between the substructures are used to study the geometrical effects on hydrogen storage capacity in carb…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets with high Curie temperature have long been the pursuit for electronic and spintronic applications. CrI3 is a rising star of intrinsic 2D ferromagnets, however, it suffers from weak exchange coupling. Here we propose a general strategy of self-intercalation to achieve enhanced ferromagnetism in bilayer CrI3. We showed that filling either Cr or I atoms into the van der Waals gap of stacked and twisted CrI3 bilayers can induce the double exchange effect and significantly strengthen the interlayer ferromagnetic coupling. According to our first-principles calculati…
The interlayer coupling of twisted bilayer graphene could markedly affect its electronic band structure. A current challenge required to overcome in experiment is how to precisely control the coupling and therefore tune the electronic properties of the bilayer graphene. Here, we describe a facile method to modulate the local interlayer coupling by adsorption of single molecule magnets onto the twisted bilayer graphene and report the characterization of its electronic band structure using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlatti…
Two-dimensional intrinsic ferromagnetic half-metal (HM) are important for the spintronics. Manipulating the interlayer magnetic coupling of van der Waals magnetic materials is an important method to control magnetoelectric properties, which is especially useful for the spintronics. Here, based on systematical research of CrGeTe3 (CGT) bilayer and multilayers with s of self-intercalated (SI) Cr atom, we find that self-intercalation can enhance the interlayer magnetic coupling. The super-exchange interaction still dominates interlayer magnetic exchange interaction, which results in ferromagnetic…
Based on density functional theory calculations, the structural and electronic properties of polythiophene in periodic and oligomer forms have been investigated. In particular, the effects of Li or Cl adsorption onto a monolayer and Li or Cl-intercalation into bulk or bilayer polythiophene are addressed using periodic calculations. The binding energy of Li or Cl adsorbed bulk or bilayer polythiophene is significantly larger than for the monolayer. The trends in the binding energy as a function of adsorbent remain the same for both the periodic and molecular cases. The band gap or HOMO-LUMO gap…
The lubricating ability of graphite largely depends on the environmental humidity, essentially the amount of water in between its layers. In general, intercalated molecules in layered materials modify their extraordinary properties by interacting with the layers. To understand the interaction of intercalated water molecules with graphene layers, we performed Raman measurements on bi-layer graphene at various humidity levels and observed an additional peak close to that of the low-frequency layer breathing mode between two graphene layers. The additional peak is attributed to the vibration betw…
In this paper we propose a mechanism for the induction of energy gaps in the spectrum of graphene and its bilayer, when both these materials are covered with water and ammonia molecules. The energy gaps obtained are within the range 20-30 meV, values compatible to those found in experimental studies of graphene bilayer. We further show that the binding energies are large enough for the adsorption of the molecules to be maintained even at room temperature.
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic crystals hold promise for miniaturized and ultralow power electronic devices that exploit spin manipulation. In these materials, large, controllable magnetocrystalline anisotropy is a prerequisite for the stabilization and manipulation of long-range magnetic order. In known 2D magnetic crystals, relatively weak magnetocrystalline anisotropy results in typically soft ferromagnetism. Here, we demonstrate that ferromagnetic order persists down to the thinnest limit of Fe$_x$TaS$_2$ (Fe-intercalated bilayer 2H-TaS$_2$) with giant coercivities up to 3 tesla. We prepare…
We performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a bi-layered heterostructure combining a graphene layer with a MoS2 layer with and without intercalated Li atoms. Our calculations demonstrate the importance of the van der Waals (vdW) interaction, which is crucial for forming stable bonding between the layers. Our DFT calculation correctly reproduces the linear dispersion, or Dirac cone, feature at the Fermi energy for the isolated graphene monolayer and the band gap for the MoS2 monolayer. For the combined graphene/MoS2 bi-layer, we observe interesting electronic structure and den…
The interaction of metals with carbon materials, specifically with graphene, is of importance for various technological applications. In particular, intercalation of alkali metals is believed to provide a means for tuning the electronic properties of graphene for device applications. While the macroscopic effects of such intercalation events can readily be studied, following the related processes at an atomic scale in detail and under well-defined experimental conditions constitutes a challenge. Here, we investigate in situ the adsorption and nucleation of the alkali metals K, Cs, and Li on fr…
The adsorption of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine diatomic molecules on graphene has been investigated using density functional theory with taking into account nonlocal correlation effects by means of vdW-DF approach. It is shown that the van der Waals interaction plays a crucial role in the formation of chemical bonding between graphene and halogen molecules, and is therefore important for a proper description of adsorption in this system. In-plane orientation of the molecules has been found to be more stable than the orientation perpendicular to the graphene layer. In the cases of F$…
The intercalation of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) with Ca has been studied extensively, yet precisely where the Ca resides remains elusive. Furthermore, the intercalation of Mg underneath epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) has not been reported. Here, we use low energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary electron cut-off photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the physical and electronic structure of both Ca- and Mg-intercalated epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC(0001). We find that Ca intercalates underneath the buffer layer and bonds to the Si-ter…
This communication reports the formation and characterization of self assembled films of a low molecular weight anionic dye amaranth and polycation Poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) by electrostatic alternating Layer-by-Layer (LBL) adsorption. It was observed that there was almost no material loss occurred during adsorption process. The UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of amaranth solution reveal that with the increase in amaranth concentration in solution, the aggregated species starts to dominate over the monomeric species. New aggregated band at 600 nm was observed in amaranth…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS$_2$, are known to undergo a structural phase transformation as well as a change in the electronic conductivity upon Li intercalation. These properties make them candidates for charge-tunable ion-insertion materials that could be used in electro-chemical devices. In this work we study the phase stability and electronic structure of H and T$^\prime$ Li-intercalated MoX$_2$ bilayers with X=S, Se, or Te. Using first-principles calculations in combination with classical and machine learning modeling approaches, we find that the H phase is more st…
Intercalation of foreign atoms in two dimensional hosts has been considered a quite promising route in order to engineer the electronic, and magnetic properties in 2D plataforms. In the present study, we performed a first-principles theoretical investigation of the energetic stability, and the magnetic/electronic properties of 2D GeP$_3$ doped by Cr atoms. Our total energy results reveal the formation of thermodynamically stable Cr doped GeP$_3$ bilayer [(GeP$_3$)$_{BL}$], characterized by interstitial Cr atoms lying in the van der Waals (vdW) gap between (GeP$_3$)$_{BL}$ [(GeP$_3$)$_{BL}^{Cr}…
We use Ca doping during growth of one and two monolayer thick MgO films on Ag(100) to identify the adsorption sites of individual adatoms with scanning tunneling microscopy. For this we combine atomic resolution images of the bare MgO layer with images of the adsorbates and the substitutional Ca atoms taken at larger tip-sample distance. For Ho atoms, the adsorption sites depend on MgO thickness. On the monolayer, they are distributed on the O and bridge sites according to the abundance of those sites, 1/3 and 2/3 respectively. On the MgO bilayer, Ho atoms populate almost exclusively the O sit…
Monitoring electronic properties of 2D materials is an essential step to open a way for applications such as electronic devices and sensors. From this perspective, Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) is a fairly simple system that offers great possibilities for tuning electronic gap and charge carriers' mobility by selective functionalization (adsorptions of atoms or molecules). Here, we present a detailed numerical study of BLG electronic properties when two types of adsorption site are present simultaneously. We focus on realistic cases that could be realized experimentally with adsorbate concentr…
The interactions between water and hydroxyl species on Pt(111) surfaces have been intensely investigated due to their importance to fuel cell electrocatalysis. Here we present a room temperature molecular dynamics study of their structure and energetics using an ensemble of neural network potentials, which allow us to obtain unprecedented statistical sampling. We first study the energetics of hydroxyl formation, where we find a near-linear adsorption energy profile, which exhibits a soft and gradual increase in the differential adsorption energy at high hydroxyl coverages. This is strikingly d…
