We classify all negatively curved $\R^n \rtimes \R$ up to quasiisometry. We show that all quasiisometries between such manifolds (except when they are biLipschitz to the real hyperbolic spaces) are almost similarities. We prove these results by studying the quasisymmetric maps on the ideal boundary of these manifolds.
We describe all the self quasisymmetric maps on the ideal boundary of a particular negatively curved solvable Lie group. As applications, we prove a Liouville type theorem, and derive some rigidity properties for quasiisometries of the solvable Lie group.
We show that for some negatively curved solvable Lie groups, all self quasiisometries are almost isometries. We prove this by showing that all self quasisymmetric maps of the ideal boundary (of the solvable Lie groups) are bilipschitz with respect to the visual metric. We also define parabolic visual metrics on the ideal boundary of Gromov hyperbolic spaces and relate them to visual metrics.
Let H and K be quasiconvex subgroups of a negatively curved torsion-free group G. We give an algorithm which decides whether an element of H is conjugated in G to an element of K.
We study quasiisometries between negatively curved homogeneous manifolds associated with diagonalizable derivations on Heisenberg algebras. We classify these manifolds up to quasiisometry, and show that all quasiisometries between such manifolds (except when they are complex hyperbolic spaces) are almost similarities. We prove these results by studying the quasisymmetric maps on the ideal boundary of these manifolds.
A simplicial complex is called negatively curved if all its simplices are isometric to simplices in hyperbolic space, and it satisfies Gromov's Link Condition. We prove that, subject to certain conditions, a compact graph of spaces whose vertex spaces are negatively curved 2-complexes, and whose edge spaces are points or circles, is negatively curved. As a consequence, we deduce that certain groups are CAT(-1). These include hyperbolic limit groups, and hyperbolic groups whose JSJ components are fundamental groups of negatively curved 2-complexes---for example, finite graphs of free groups wit…
Answering a question by Margulis we prove that the conclusion of Selberg's Lemma fails for discrete isometry groups of negatively curved Hadamard manifolds.
In this short note we survey some results about the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold. In particular, we review a theorem of Gusevskij, it states that the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold does not belong to $\mathcal{C},$ where $\mathcal{C}$ is the smallest class of groups that contains all amenable groups and is closed under free products and finite extensions.
We show that certain aspherical manifolds arising from hyperplane arrangements in negatively curved manifolds have relatively hyperbolic fundamental group.
Let X, Y be the universal covers of two compact Riemannian manifolds (with dimension not equal to 4) with negative sectional curvature. Then every quasiisometry between them lies at a finite distance from a bilipschitz homeomorphism.
For metric spaces with curvature less than or equal to x, x<0, it is shown that a recurrent geodesic can be approximated by closed geodesics. A counter example is provided for the converse.
A word hyperbolic group $G$ is called GFERF if every quasiconvex subgroup coincides with the intersection of finite index subgroups containing it. We show that in any such group, the product of finitely many quasiconvex subgroups is closed in the profinite topology on $G$.
Under mild assumptions on a group G, we prove that the class of complete Riemannian n-manifolds of uniformly bounded negative sectional curvatures and with the fundamental groups isomorphic to G breaks into finitely many tangential homotopy types. It follows that many aspherical manifolds do not admit complete negatively curved metrics with prescribed curvature bounds.
In this paper we study certain groups of bilipschitz maps of the boundary minus a point of a negatively curved space that is an abelian-by-cyclic solvable Lie group, where the extension is given by a matrix whose eigenvalues all lie outside of the unit circle. The case where the extension matrix is diagonal was previously studied by Dymarz. As an application, combined with work of Eskin-Fisher-Whyte and Peng, we provide the last steps in the proof of quasi-isometric rigidity for a class of lattices in solvable Lie groups.
We prove several finiteness results for the class $M_{a,b,G,n}$ of $n$-manifolds that have fundamental groups isomorphic to $G$ and that can be given complete Riemannian metrics of sectional curvatures within $[a,b]$ where $a\le b<0$. In particular, if $M$ is a closed negatively curved manifold of dimension at least three, then only finitely many manifolds in the class $M_{a,b,π_1(M), n}$ are total spaces of vector bundles over $M$. Furthermore, given a word-hyperbolic group $G$ and an integer $n$ there exists a positive $ε=ε(n,G)$ such that the tangent bundle of any manifold in the class $M_{…
In this paper, we show that if G is a finite p-group (p prime) acting by automorphisms on a $δ$-hyperbolic Poincare Duality group, then the fixed subgroup is a Poincare Duality group over Z/p. We also provide examples to show that the fixed subgroup might not even be a Duality group over Z.
We study the subgroup structure of discrete groups which share cohomological properties which resemble non-negative curvature. Examples include all Gromov hyperbolic groups. We provide strong restrictions on the possible s-normal subgroups of a Gromov hyperbolic group, or more generally a 'negatively curved' group. Another result says that the image of a group, which is boundedly generated by a finite set of amenable subgroups, in a Gromov hyperbolic group has to be virtually cyclic. Moreover, we show that any homomorphic image of an analogue of a higher rank lattices in a Gromov hyperbolic gr…
Ozawa showed that for any i.c.c., hyperbolic group, the associated group factor is solid. Developing a new approach that combines some methods of Peterson, Ozawa and Popa, and Ozawa, we strengthen this result by showing that these factors are strongly solid. Using our methods in cooperation with a cocycle superrigidity result of Ioana, we show that profinite actions of lattices in Sp(n,1), n>1, are virtually W*-superrigid.
We consider pairs (X,Y) where X is a compact, locally CAT(-1) space, and Y is a totally geodesic subspace. The inclusion induces an embedding of the boundaries at infinity of the universal covers; we focus on the case where these are spheres whose dimensions differ by 2. We show that if the embedding is tame, then it is unknotted. We give examples of pairs for which the embedding is knotted (and can be realized as the fixed point set of an involution). We also provide a criterion for knottedness of tame codimension two spheres in high dimensional (>5) spheres. Corresponding results for delta-h…
