We present a dual 5D braneworld picture of a recently suggested model for a microcanonical description of a 4D cosmology driven by a conformal field theory with a large number of quantum fields. The 5D side of the duality relation is represented by a generalized brane induced gravity model in a Schwarzschild-de Sitter bulk. The values of the bulk cosmological and the induced 4D cosmological constants are determined by requiring the absence of conical singularity at the de Sitter horizon of the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter bulk. Those values belong to the vicinity of the upper bound of a range of admissible values for the cosmological constant. This upper bound is enforced by the 4D CFT and coincides with the natural gravitational cutoff in a theory with many quantum species. The resulting DGP/CFT duality suggests the possibility of a new type of {\em background independent} correspondence. A mechanism for inverting the sign of the effective cosmological constant is found, which might reconcile a negative value of the primordial cosmological constant compatible with supersymmetry with the one required by inflationary cosmology.
Large extra dimensions provide interesting extensions of our parameter space for gravitational theories. There exist now brane models which can perfectly reproduce standard four-dimensional Friedmann cosmology. These models are not motivated by observations, but they can be helpful in developing new approaches to the dimensionality problem in string theory. I describe the embedding of standard Friedmann cosmology in the DGP model, and in particular the realization of our current (dust+Lambda)-dominated universe in this model.
We construct a DGP inspired braneworld scenario where a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the induced Ricci curvature is present on the brane. We show that this model allows for an embedding of the standard Friedmann cosmology in the sense that the cosmological evolution of the background metric on the brane can be described by the standard Friedmann equation. The relation between our framework and the dark-energy formalism is explored.
We construct a DGP inspired braneworld scenario where a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the induced Ricci curvature is present on the brane. First we investigate the status of gravitational potential with non-minimal coupling and observational constraints on this non-minimal model. Then we further deepen the idea of embedding of FRW cosmology in this non-minimal setup. Cosmological implications of this scenario are examined with details and the quintessence and late-time expansion of the universe within this framework are examined. Some observational constraints imposed on this non-minim…
We solve for the behaviour of cosmological perturbations in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model using a new numerical method. Unlike some other approaches in the literature, our method uses no approximations other than linear theory and is valid on large scales. We examine the behaviour of late-universe density perturbations for both the self-accelerating and normal branches of DGP cosmology.
We consider a DGP brane scenario where a scalar field is present on the brane through the introduction of a scalar potential, itself motivated by the notion of modified gravity. This theory predicts that the mass appearing in the gravitational potential is modified by the addition of the mass of the scalar field. The cosmological implications that such a scenario entails are examined and shown to be consistent with a universe expanding with power-law acceleration.
We consider a DGP inspired brane scenario where the action on the brane is augmented by a function of the Ricci scalar, ${\cal L}(R)$. The cosmological implications that such a scenario entails are examined for $R^{n}$ and shown to be consistent with a universe expanding with power-law acceleration. It is shown that two classes of solutions exist for the usual FRW metric and small Hubble radii. When the Hubble radius becomes larger, we either have a transition to a fully 5D regime or to a self-inflationary solution which produces a late accelerated expansion such that the radius becomes a func…
We consider a five dimensional DGP-brane scenario endowed with a non-minimally coupled scalar field within the context of Brans-Dicke theory. This theory predicts that the mass appearing in the gravitational potential is modified by the addition of the mass of the effective intrinsic curvature on the brane. We also derive the effective four dimensional field equations on a 3+1 dimensional brane where the fifth dimension is assumed to have an orbifold symmetry. Finally, we discuss the cosmological implications of this setup, predicting an accelerated expanding universe with a value of the Brans…
We analyse a DGP brane filled with a k-essence field and assume the k-field evolving linearly with the cosmic time of the brane. We then solve analytically the Friedmann equation and deduce the different behaviour of the brane at the low and the high energy regimes. The asymptotic behaviour can be quite different involving accelerating branes, big bangs, big crunches, big rips or quiescent singularities. The latter correspond to a type of sudden singularity.
The DGP brane-world model provides a simple alternative to the standard LCDM cosmology, with the same number of parameters. There is no dark energy - the late universe self-accelerates due to an infrared modification of gravity. We compute the joint constraints on the DGP model from supernovae, the cosmic microwave background shift parameter, and the baryon oscillation peak in the SDSS luminous red galaxy sample. Flat DGP models are within the joint 2 sigma contour, but the LCDM model provides a significantly better fit to the data. These tests are based on the background dynamics of the DGP m…
We consider the asymmetric branes model of modified gravity, which can produce late time acceleration of the universe and compare the cosmology of this model to the standard $Λ$CDM model and to the DGP braneworld model. We show how the asymmetric cosmology at relevant physical scales can be regarded as a one-parameter extension of the DGP model, and investigate the effect of this additional parameter on the expansion history of the universe.
We consider the cosmological evolution in a recently suggested new model of quantum initial conditions for the Universe. The effective Friedmann equation incorporates the effect of the conformal anomaly of quantum fields and, interestingly, shows that their vacuum Casimir energy is completely screened and does not gravitate. The cosmological evolution also features a new mechanism for a cosmological acceleration stage. This stage is followed by a big boost singularity -- a rapid growth up to infinity of the scale factor acceleration parameter. We also briefly discuss the relation between our m…
In the standard picture of cosmology it is predicted that a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately 10 μseconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. We consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a DGP brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities useful for the study of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. Also, due to …
We discuss the impact of Lorentz violation on the cosmology. Firstly, we show that the Lorentz violation affects the dynamics of the chaotic inflationary model and gives rise to an interesting feature. Secondly, we propose the Lorentz violating DGP brane models where the Lorentz violating terms on the brane accelerate the current universe. We conjecture that the ghost disappears in the Lorentz violating DGP models.
The attempt to understand if AdS/CFT correspondence may be realized as the one between some AdS-like cosmological space and CFT living on the boundary is made. In order to obtain such cosmology we exchange the time and radial coordinates in d5 Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter (S-AdS) BH (with corresponding signature change). The test on proportionality of free energies from such d5 cosmological space (after AdS/CFT identification of parameters) and from ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N) super Yang-Mills quantum theory is successfully passed.
We derive the modified Friedmann equations for a generalization of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model in which the brane has one additional compact dimension. The main new feature is the emission of gravitational waves into the bulk. We study two classes of solutions: First, if the compact dimension is stabilized, the waves vanish and one exactly recovers DGP cosmology. However, a stabilization by means of physical matter is not possible for a tension-dominated brane, thus implying a late time modification of 4D cosmology different from DGP. Second, for a freely expanding compact directio…
We study the cosmology of a galileon scalar-tensor theory, obtained by covariantizing the decoupling lagrangian of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Poratti (DGP) model. Despite being local in 3+1 dimensions, the resulting cosmological evolution is remarkably similar to that of the full 4+1-dimensional DGP framework, both for the expansion history and the evolution of density perturbations. As in the DGP model, the covariant galileon theory yields two branches of solutions, depending on the sign of the galileon velocity. Perturbations are stable on one branch and ghost-like on the other. An interesting effe…

Unlike some other approaches in the literature, our method uses no approximations other than linear theory and is valid on large scales. We examine the behaviour of late-universe density perturbations for both the self-accelerating and normal branches of DGP cosmology. Our numerical results can form the basis of a detailed comparison between the DGP model and cosmological observations.
We explore the dynamic dS/CFT correspondence using the moving domain wall(brane) approach in the brane cosmology. The bulk spacetimes are given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole and the topological-de Sitter (TdS) solutions. We consider the embeddings of (Euclidean) moving domain walls into the (Euclidean) de Sitter spaces. The TdS solution is better to describe the static dS/CFT correspondence than the SdS black hole, while in the dynamic dS/CFT correspondence the SdS solution provides situation better than that of the TdS solution. However, we do not find a desirable cosmologic…
We review the relation between entropy bounds to rewrite Friedmann equation on the brane in terms of three entropy bounds: Bekenstein-Verlinde ($S_{BV}$); Bekenstein-Hawking bound ($S_{BH}$); Hubble bound ($S_H$). For a strongly coupled conformal field theory (CFT) with a dual 5-dimensional anti de Sitter Schwarzschild (AdSS$_5$) black hole, we can easily establish the connection between the Cardy-Verlinde formula on the CFT side and the entropy representation of Friedmann equation in cosmology. In this case its cosmological evolution for entropy is given by the semi-circle. However, for the m…
The general model of higher derivative (HD) gravity is considered. The search of brane-world cosmology in such theory is presented when bulk is d5 AdS and boundary is spherical, hyperbolic or flat (single) brane. It is found the wide range of theory parameters where such cosmology may be realized. Special attention is paid to the version of HD theory representing SG dual of ${\cal N}=2$ $Sp(N)$ SCFT (in next-to-leading order of large $N$ expansion). In particular, it is shown that inflationary brane Universe does not occur for SG dual while hyperbolic brane occurs (which was not possible in le…
The creation of 4d de Sitter (inflationary) boundary gluing two d5 de Sitter bulks on the classical as well as on quantum level (with account of brane QFT via corresponding trace anomaly induced effective action) is discussed. Quantum effects decrease the classical de Sitter brane radius or create new de Sitter brane with even smaller radius. It is important that brane CFT may be chosen to be dual to one of 5d de Sitter bulks, making the explicit relation of de Sitter brane-world with dS/CFT correspondence. In this way, the localization of gravity on the brane is shown. Moving (time-dependent)…
We study the dynamical system approach of non minimally coupled scalar field to induced gravity on the brane in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this context, we derive the modified Friedmann equation and the equation of motion. The dynamics of this model are studied by rewriting the cosmological field equations in the form of a system of autonomous differential equations. In particular, the analysis is considered by investigating an exponential potential and a monomial form of the non minimal coupling function. We show that, for sufficient conditions, a past de Sitter attractor…
The DGP brane-world model provides an alternative to the standard LCDM cosmology, in which the late universe accelerates due to a modification of gravity rather than vacuum energy. The cosmological constant $Λ$ in LCDM is replaced by a single parameter, the crossover scale $r_c$, in DGP. The Supernova redshift observations can be fitted by both models, with $Λ\sim H_0^2$ and $r_c \sim H_0^{-1}$. This degeneracy is broken by structure formation, which is suppressed in different ways in the two models. There is some confusion in the literature about how the standard linear growth factor is modif…
We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in the presence of rotation. For such CFTs, we point out an intriguing resemblance in their thermodynamic formulas with the corresponding ones of two-dimensional CFTs. The…

A brief review of the field of braneworld cosmology, from its inception with the large extra dimension scenario, to aspects of cosmology in warped extra dimensions, including the RS-I and RS-II models, braneworld inflation, the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, mirage cosmology, the radion-induced phase transition in RS-I, possible gravity wave signals, and the DGP model.
In the last two decades the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence (AdS/CFT) has emerged as focal point of many research interests. In particular, it functions as a stepping stone to a still missing full quantum theory of gravity. In this context, a pivotal question is if and how cosmological physics can be studied using AdS/CFT. Motivated by string theory, braneworld cosmologies propose that our universe is a four-dimensional membrane embedded in a bulk five-dimensional AdS spacetime. We show how such a scenario can be microscopically realized in AdS/CFT using special field theo…
We discuss the brane cosmology in the 5D anti de Sitter Reissner-Nordstrom (AdSRN$_5$) spacetime. A brane with the tension $σ$ is defined as the edge of an AdSRN$_5$ space with mass $M$ and charge $Q$. In this case we get the CFT-radiation term $(ρ_{CFT})$ from $M$ and the charged dust $(-ρ^2_{cd})$ from $Q^2$ in the Friedmann-like equation. However, this equation is not justified because it contains $ρ_{cd}^2$-term with the negative sign. This is unconventional in view of the standard cosmology. In order to resolve this problem, we introduce a localized dust matter which satisfies $P_{dm}=0$.…
We study the holographic principle in the brane cosmology. Especially we describe how to accommodate the 5D anti de Sitter Schwarzschild (AdSS$_5$) black hole in the Binetruy-Deffayet-Langlois (BDL) approach of brane cosmology. It is easy to make a connection between a mass $M$ of the AdSS$_5$ black hole and a conformal field theory (CFT)-radiation dominated universe on the brane in the moving domain wall approach. But this is not established in the BDL approach. In this case we use two parameters $C_1, C_2$ in the Friedmann equation. These arise from integration and are really related to the …
We present an overview of the recently suggested cosmological model driven by conformal field theory (CFT) with the initial conditions in the form of the microcanonical density matrix. In particular, we discuss the origin of inflationary stage in this model and a novel feature -- the thermal nature of the primordial power spectrum of the CMB anisotropy. The relevant effect of "temperature of the relic temperature anisotropy" can be responsible for a thermal contribution to the red tilt of this spectrum, additional to its conventional vacuum component. The amplification of this effect due to re…
We apply the monodromy method for the calculation of the functional determinant of a special second order differential operator $F=-d^2/dτ^2+{\ddot g}/g$, $\ddot g= d^2g/dτ^2$, subject to periodic boundary conditions with a periodic zero mode $g=g(τ)$. This operator arises in applications of the early Universe theory and, in particular, determines the one-loop statistical sum for the microcanonical ensemble in cosmology generated by a conformal field theory (CFT). This ensemble realizes the concept of cosmological initial conditions by generalizing the notion of the no-boundary wavefunction of…
The AdS/CFT correspondence is employed to derive logarithmic corrections to the Cardy-Verlinde formula when thermal fluctuations in the Anti-de Sitter black hole are accounted for. The qualitative effect of these corrections on the braneworld cosmology is investigated. The role of such terms in enabling a contracting universe to undergo a bounce is demonstrated. Their influence on the stability of black holes in AdS space and the Hawking-Page-Witten phase transitions is also discussed.
The path integration technique recently developed for the statistical sum of the microcanonical ensemble in cosmology is applied to the calculation of the one-loop preexponential factor in the cosmological model generated by a conformal field theory with a large number of quantum species -- the model of initial conditions possibly related to the resolution of the cosmological constant and landscape problems. The result is obtained for the family of background cosmological instantons with one oscillation of the FRW scale factor. The magnitude of the prefactor is analytically and numerically est…
We define the 7D Randall-Sundrum (RS) background and construct the corresponding 6D theory via AdS/CFT duality. In simple approximations, the Friedmann equation derived from 7D RS cosmology and the brane view-point results exactly match. Possible cosmologies on the bulk side are also outlined.
A deSitter brane-world bounding regions of anti-deSitter space has a macroscopic entropy given by one-quarter the area of the observer horizon. A proposed variant of the AdS/CFT correspondence gives a dual description of this cosmology as conformal field theory coupled to gravity in deSitter space. In the case of two-dimensional deSitter space this provides a microscopic derivation of the entropy, including the one-quarter, as quantum entanglement of the conformal field theory across the horizon.
In this paper we study the creation of brane-worlds in $AdS$ bulk. We first consider the simplest case of onebranes in $AdS_3$. In this case we are able to properly describe the creation of a spherically symmetric brane-world deriving a general expression for its wavefunction. Then, we sketch the $AdS_{d+1}$ set-up within the context of the WKB approximation. Finally, we comment on these scenarios in light of the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence.
The radiation-dominated k=0 FRW cosmology emerges as the induced metric on a codimension one hypersurface of constant extrinsic curvature in the five-dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild solution. That we should get FRW cosmology in this way is an expected result from AdS/CFT in light of recent comments regarding the coupling of gravity to "boundary" conformal field theories. I remark on how this calculation bears on the understanding of Randall and Sundrum's "alternative to compactification." A generalization of the AdS/CFT prescription for computing Green's functions is suggested, and it is shown h…
We analyse the cosmology of a brane world model where a single brane carrying the standard model fields forms the boundary of a 5-dimensional AdS bulk (the Randall-Sundrum II scenario). We focus on the thermal radiation of bulk gravitons, the formation of the bulk black hole, and the holographic AdS/CFT definition of the RSII theory. Our detailed calculation of bulk radiation reduces previous estimates to a phenomenologically acceptable, although potentially visible level. In late cosmology, in which the Friedmann equation depends linearly on the energy density ρ, only about 0.5% of energy den…
Using the thin-shell formalism we discuss the motion of domain walls in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter (AdS) time-dependent bulks. This motion results in a dynamics for the brane scale factor. We show that in the case of a clean brane the scale factor describes both singular and non-singular universes, with phases of contraction and expansion. These phases can be understood as quotients of AdS spacetime by a discrete symmetry group. We discuss this effect in some detail, and suggest how the AdS/CFT correspondence could be applied to obtain a non perturbative description of brane-world string cos…
Conformal higher spin (CHS) field theory, which is a solid part of recent advanced checks of AdS/CFT correspondence, finds applications in cosmology. Hidden sector of weakly interacting CHS fields suggests a resolution of the hierarchy problem in the model of initial conditions for inflationary cosmology driven by a conformal field theory. These initial conditions are set by thermal garland type cosmological instantons in the sub-planckian energy range for the model of CHS fields with a large positive coefficient $β$ of the Gauss-Bonnet term in their total conformal anomaly and a large number …

Time-dependent scalar fields provide a candidate explanation for the dark energy. For these to vary on cosmological time scales, the derivative of the scalar potential in Planck units should have roughly the same magnitude as the potential itself. We emphasize that scalars with this property are present in any four-dimensional gravitational effective theory with a known UV completion via holography, provided that the dual CFT has scalar operators with dimensions of order one. Cosmological solutions without time-dependent scalars are analogous to solutions dual to the vacuum states of such CFTs…
We study the inflation process of universe based on the renormalizable quantum gravity formulated as a conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the power-law CFT spectrum approaches to that of the Harrison-Zel'dovich-Peebles type as the amplitude of gravitational potential gradually reduces during the inflation. The non-Gaussanity parameter is preserved within order of unity due to the diffeomorphism invariance. Sharp fall-off of the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) at large scale is understood as a consequence of the existence of dynamical scale of the quantum gra…
We discuss the cosmological implications and the holographic dual theory of the 7D Randall-Sundrum (RS) gravitational set-up. Adding generic matter in the bulk on the 7D gravity side we study the cosmological evolution inferred by the non vanishing value of the brane-bulk energy exchange parameter. This analysis is achieved in detail for specific assumptions on the internal space evolution, including analytical considerations and numerical results. The dual theory is then constructed, making use of the holographic renormalization procedure. The resulting renormalized 6D CFT is anomalous and co…
In this note, we explore the possibility that certain high-energy holographic CFT states correspond to black hole microstates with a geometrical behind-the-horizon region, modelled by a portion of a second asymptotic region terminating at an end-of-the-world (ETW) brane. We study the time-dependent physics of this behind-the-horizon region, whose ETW boundary geometry takes the form of a closed FRW spacetime. We show that in many cases, this behind-the-horizon physics can be probed directly by looking at the time dependence of entanglement entropy for sufficiently large spatial CFT subsystems.…
We present a detailed derivation of the recently suggested new type of hill-top inflation [arXiv:1509.07270] originating from the microcanonical density matrix initial conditions in cosmology driven by conformal field theory (CFT). The cosmological instantons of topology $S^1\times S^3$, which set up these initial conditions, have the shape of a garland with multiple periodic oscillations of the scale factor of the spatial $S^3$-section. They describe underbarrier oscillations of the inflaton and scale factor in the vicinity of the inflaton potential maximum, which gives a sufficient amount of…
We derive a sufficient set of conditions on the Euclidean boundary theory in dS/CFT for it to predict classical, Lorentzian bulk evolution at large spatial volumes. Our derivation makes use of a canonical transformation to express the bulk wave function at large volume in terms of the sources of the dual partition function. This enables a sharper formulation of dS/CFT. The conditions under which the boundary theory predicts classical bulk evolution are stronger than the criteria usually employed in quantum cosmology. We illustrate this in a homogeneous isotropic minisuperspace model of gravity…
This thesis follows two main lines of research, both related to relevant aspects of string theory and its phenomenological/cosmological applications. We study two different generalizations of the integrable SG model to NC geometry, after discussing general properties and issues of integrable theories and NC field theories, mentioning their role in string theory. The question is whether we can obtain an integrable NC SG with factorized S matrix. Of the two models we study, the second NC SG -- derived by dimensional reduction from the stringy NC self-dual YM in (2+2) dimensions -- exhibits the g…
String theory is arguably the best candidate for a theory of quantum gravity and unified interactions. Reconciling Einstein's theory of General Relativity with Quantum Mechanics. The theory however is best understood on Minkowski and Anti-de Sitter space-times, and not on exponentially expanding space-times with positive cosmological constant, like our own universe. There is still no satisfactory formulation of String Theory on these so called asymptotically de Sitter space times. In this thesis I will discuss certain avenues of progress towards a String Theory formulation of de Sitter space-t…
We describe a class of holographic models that may describe the physics of certain four-dimensional big-bang / big-crunch cosmologies. The construction involves a pair of 3D Euclidean holographic CFTs each on a homogeneous and isotropic space $M$ coupled at either end of an interval ${\cal I}$ to a Euclidean 4D CFT on $M \times {\cal I}$ with many fewer local degrees of freedom. We argue that in some cases, when the size of $M$ is much greater than the length of ${\cal I}$, the theory flows to a gapped / confining three-dimensional field theory on $M$ in the infrared, and this is reflected in …
We consider deSitter universe and Nariai universe induced by quantum CFT with classical phantom matter and perfect fluid. The model represents the combination of trace-anomaly driven inflation and phantom driven deSitter universe. The similarity of phantom matter with quantum CFT indicates that phantom scalar may be the effective description for some quantum field theory. It is demonstrated that it is easier to achieve the acceleration of the scale factor preserving the energy conditions in such unified model. Some properties of unified theory (anti-gravitating solutions, negative ADM mass Nar…
