We report the first results from deep X-ray observations of the Wolf-Rayet binary system WR147 with the Chandra HETG. Analysis of the zeroth order data reveals that WR147 is a double X-ray source. The northern counterpart is likely associated with the colliding wind region, while the southern component is certainly identified with the WN star in this massive binary. The latter is the source of high energy X-rays (including the Fe K_alpha complex at 6.67 keV) whose production mechanism is yet unclear. For the first time, X-rays are observed directly from a WR star in a binary system.
We present new Chandra X-ray observations of the close pair of young stars RNO 1B and 1C (6$''$ separation) located in the L1287 cloud. RNO 1B erupted in 1978 - 1990 and is classified as an FU Orionis star (FUor). RNO 1C also shows most of the properties of an FUor but no eruption has yet been seen. Only a few dozen FUors are known and the presence of two such objects with a small angular separation is rare, suggesting a common origin. Both stars were faintly detected by Chandra and we summarize their X-ray properties within the framework of other previously detected FUors. We also report othe…
Binary white dwarf (WD) coalescences driven by gravitational waves or collisions in triple systems are potential progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We combine the distribution of 56Ni inferred from observations of SNe Ia with the results of both sub-Chandrasekhar detonation models and direct collision calculations to estimate what mass WDs should be exploding in each scenario to reproduce the observations. These WD mass distributions are then compared with the observed Galactic WD mass distribution and Monte Carlo simulations of WD-WD binary populations. For collisions, we find that t…
We present results of pointed X-ray observations of the accreting jet-driving T Tauri star RY Tau using Chandra and XMM-Newton. We obtained high-resolution grating spectra and excellent-quality CCD spectra and light curves with the objective of identifying the physical mechanisms underlying RY Tau's bright X-ray emission. Grating spectra reveal numerous emission lines spanning a broad range of temperature superimposed on a hot continuum. The X-ray emission measure distribution is dominated by very hot plasma at T_hot ~ 50 MK but higher temperatures were present during flares. A weaker cool pla…
The main idea of our research is to estimate the physical coalescence time of the double supermassive black hole (SMBH) system in the centre of NGC 6240 based on the X-ray observations from the Chandra space observatory. The spectra of the Northern and Southern nuclei were fitted by spectral models from Sherpa and both presented the narrow component of the Fe K$α$ emission line. It enabled us to apply the spectral model to these lines and to find relative offset $\approx0.02$ keV. The enclosed dynamical mass of the central region of NGC 6240 with radius 1 kpc was estimated $\approx 2.04\times …
We observed the double neutron star binary (DNSB) containing PSR J1537+1155 (also known as B1534+12) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is one of the two DNSBs detected in X-rays and the only one where a hint of variability with orbital phase was found (in the previous Chandra observation). Our follow-up observation supports the earlier result: the distribution of photon arrival times with orbital phase again shows a deficit around apastron. The significance of the deficit in the combined dataset exceeds 99%. Such an orbital light-curve suggests that the X-ray emission is seen only when …
We present Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations ($\sim$200 ks in total) of the X-ray luminous elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. A soft band (0.5-2 keV) image shows the presence of a bright core in the center surrounded by an extended X-ray corona and two pronounced quasi-symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features. Each of this features defines the rimof an ellipsoidal bubble. An additional bubble-like feature, whose northern rim is located $\sim2$ kpc south of the north-eastern arm, is detected as well. We present surface brightness and temperature prof…
We present the first high spectral resolution X-ray observation of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 obtained with the high energy transmission grating (HETG) spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum shows complex emission and absorption features in both the soft X-rays and Fe K band. We detect emission and absorption lines in the energy range between E = 700-1000 eV associated with ionized Fe L transitions (Fe XVII-XX). An emission line at the energy of E=6.4 keV consistent with the Fe Kαis also observed. Our best-fit model requires at least three different compone…
The intracluster medium (ICM), as a magnetized and highly ionized fluid, provides an ideal laboratory to study plasma physics under extreme conditions that cannot yet be achieved on Earth. NGC 1404 is a bright elliptical galaxy that is being gas stripped as it falls through the ICM of the Fornax Cluster. We use the new {\sl Chandra} X-ray observations of NGC 1404 to study ICM microphysics. The interstellar medium (ISM) of NGC 1404 is characterized by a sharp leading edge, 8 kpc from the galaxy center, and a short downstream gaseous tail. Contact discontinuities are resolved on unprecedented sp…
New Chandra observations have resolved the structure of the X-ray luminous southern hotspot in the giant radio quasar 4C74.26 into two distinct features. The nearer one to the nucleus is an extremely luminous peak, extended some 5 kpc perpendicular to the orientation of the jet; 19 kpc projected further away from the central nucleus than this is a fainter X-ray arc having similar symmetry. This arc is co-spatial with near-IR and optical emission imaged with Gemini, and radio emission imaged with MERLIN. The angular separation of the double shock structure (itself ~19 kpc or 10 arcsec in size) …
High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the warm absorber in the nearby X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, Mrk 1040 is presented. The observations were carried out in the 2013-2014 timeframe using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating with a total exposure of 200 ks. A multitude of absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si are detected from a wide variety of ionization states. In particular, the detection of inner K-shell absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si, from charge states ranging from F-like to Li-like ions, suggests the presence of a substantial amount of low ionization absorbing gas, illumin…
Accretion at super-Eddington rates is expected to be accompanied by strong outflows. Such outflows are observed in Galactic X-ray binaries and extragalactic Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). However, due to their large source distances, ULX outflows are challenging to detect and study in detail. Galactic neutron stars accreting from a Be-star companion at super-Eddington rates show many similarities to ULX pulsars, and therefore offer an alternative approach to study outflows in this accretion regime. Here, we present Chandra high-resolution spectroscopy of such a super-Eddington accreting …
(abridged) We identify a numerically significant population of heavily obscured AGNs at z~0.5-1 in the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South by selecting 242 X-ray undetected objects with infrared-based star formation rates (SFRs) substantially higher (a factor of 3.2 or more) than their SFRs determined from the UV after correcting for dust extinction. An X-ray stacking analysis of 23 candidates in the central CDF-S region using the 4 Ms Chandra data reveals a hard X-ray signal with an effective power-law photon index of Gamma=0.6_{-0.4}^{+0.3}, indicating a si…
We present an analysis of \chandra/LETGS observations of the ultracompact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 1626$-$67, continuing our project to analyze the existing Chandra gratings data of this interesting source. The extremely low mass, hydrogen-depleted donor star provides a unique opportunity to study the properties and structure of the metal-rich accreted plasma. There are strong, double-peaked emission features of OVII-VIII and Ne IX-X, but no other identified emission lines are detected. Our spectral fit simultaneously models the emission line profiles and the plasma parameters, using a two-tempe…
We present new and archival Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of X-shaped radio galaxies within z < 0.1 alongside a comparison sample of normal double-lobed FR I and II radio galaxies. By fitting elliptical distributions to the observed diffuse hot X-ray emitting atmospheres, we find that the ellipticity and the position angle of the hot gas follows that of the stellar light distribution for radio galaxy hosts in general. Moreover, compared to the control sample, we find a strong tendency for X-shaped morphology to be associated with wings directed along the minor axis of the hot gas dist…
Previous radio and infrared observations have revealed an obscured region of high-mass star formation in Cygnus known as Onsala 2 (ON 2). Within this region lies the optically-revealed young stellar cluster Berkeley 87 which contains several OB stars and the rare oxygen-type Wolf-Rayet star WR 142. Previous radio studies of ON 2 have also discovered masers and several H II regions excited by embedded OB stars. Radio and GAIA parallaxes have now shown that the H II regions are more distant than Berkeley 87. We summarize two Chandra X-ray observations of ON 2 which detected more than 300 X-ray s…
We present the Chandra imaging and spectral analysis of NGC 4968, a nearby (z = 0.00986) Seyfert 2 galaxy. We discover extended ($\sim$1 kpc) X-ray emission in the soft band (0.5 - 2 keV) that is neither coincident with the narrow line region nor the extended radio emission. Based on spectral modeling, it is linked to on-going star formation ($\sim$2.6-4 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$). The soft emission at circumnuclear scales (inner $\sim$400 pc) originates from hot gas, with kT $\sim$ 0.7 keV, while the most extended thermal emission is cooler (kT $\sim$ 0.3 keV). We refine previous measurements of t…
(Abridged) In 1999, Chandra revealed a 150"-radius X-ray halo surrounding the 40"-radius PWN G21.5-0.9. A 2005 imaging study showed that the halo is limb-brightened, and suggested this feature is a candidate for the long-sought SNR shell. We present a spectral analysis of G21.5-0.9, using the longest effective observation to date (578.6 ks with ACIS, 278.4 ks with HRC) to study unresolved questions about the spectral nature of remnant features, such as the limb-brightening of the X-ray halo and the bright knot in the northern part of the halo. The Chandra analysis favours the non-thermal inter…
We present a high resolution X-ray spectrum of the accreting X-ray pulsar, OAO 1657--415 with HETG+ACIS-S onboard \emph{Chandra},revealing the presence of a broad line component around $\sim$ 6.3 keV associated with the neutral iron K$_α$ line at 6.4 \rm{keV}. This is interpreted as Compton shoulder arising from the Compton scattering of the 6.4 \rm{keV} fluorescence photons making OAO 1657--415 the second accreting neutron star where such a feature is detected. A Compton shoulder reveals the presence of dense matter surrounding the X-ray source. We did not detect any periodicity in the lightc…
We present the results of a deep study of the neutron star (NS) population in the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626), using the full 330-ks 2002-2015 ACIS dataset from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and coordinated radio observations taken with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in 2015. We investigate the X-ray luminosity (Lx), spectrum, and orbital modulation of the 7 known compact binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the cluster. We report two simultaneous detections of the redback PSR J1824-2452I (M28I) and its X-ray counterpart. We discover a double-peaked X-ray orbital flux modulation in M28I du…
X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using inf…
We present the discovery of a powerful candidate microquasar in NGC 300, associated with the S 10 optical nebula (previously classified as a supernova remnant). Chandra images show four discrete X-ray knots aligned in the plane of the sky over a length of $\approx$150 pc. The X-ray emission from the knots is well fitted with a thermal plasma model at a temperature of $\approx$0.6 keV and a combined 0.3-8 keV luminosity of $\approx$10$^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The X-ray core, if present at all, does not stand out above the thermal emission of the knots: this suggests that the accreting compact objec…
We present the first \textit{Chandra} and \textit{Swift} X-ray study of the spiral galaxy NGC\,4088 and its ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX N4088--X1). We also report very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 1.6 and 5 GHz performed quasi-simultaneously with the \textit{Swift} and \textit{Chandra} observations, respectively. Fifteen X-ray sources are detected by \textit{Chandra} within the D25 ellipse of NGC\,4088, from which we derive the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of this galaxy. We find the XLF is very similar to those of star-forming galaxies and estimate a star-formati…
We present Chandra ACIS-I X-ray observations of 0FGL J1311.9-3419 and 0FGL J1653.4-0200, the two brightest high Galactic latitude (|b|>10 deg) gamma-ray sources from the 3 month Fermi-LAT bright source list that are still unidentified. Both were also detected previously by EGRET, and despite dedicated multi-wavelength follow-up, they are still not associated with established classes of gamma-ray emitters like pulsars or radio-loud active galactic nuclei. X-ray sources found in the ACIS-I fields of view are catalogued, and their basic properties are determined. These are discussed as candidate …
Hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) lie at the extreme luminosity end of the IR galaxy population with $L_{\rm IR}>10^{13}$L$_\odot$. They are thought to be closer counterparts of the more distant sub-mm galaxies, and should therefore be optimal targets to study the most massive systems in formation. We present deep $Chandra$ observations of IRAS~F15307+3252 (100ks), a classical HyLIRG located at $z=$0.93 and hosting a radio-loud AGN ($L_{\rm 1.4 GHz}\sim3.5\times10^{25}$ W/Hz). The $Chandra$ images reveal the presence of extended ($r=160$ kpc), asymmetric X-ray emission in the soft 0.3…
We present Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations (~200ks in total) of the X-ray luminous elliptical galaxy NGC4636, located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. A soft band (0.5-2 keV) image shows the presence of a bright core in the center surrounded by an extended X-ray corona and two pronounced quasi-symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features. Each of this features defines the rim of an ellipsoidal bubble. An additional bubble-like feature, whose northern rim is located ~2 kpc south of the north-eastern arm, is detected as well. We present surface brightness and temperature profiles across…
One of the six extended X-ray sources found in the Chandra DeepField North is centred on HDF130, which has recently been shown to be a massive galaxy at z=1.99 with a compact radio nucleus. The X-ray source has a roughly double-lobed structure with each lobe about 41 arcsec long, or 345 kpc at the redshift of HDF130. We have analyzed the 2 Ms X-ray image and spectrum of the source and find that it is well fit by a power-law continuum of photon index 2.65 and has a 2--10 keV luminosity of 5.4x10^{43}ergps (if at z=1.99). Any further extended emission within a radius of 60 arcsec has a luminosit…
We present first results from a very deep (~650 ksec) Chandra X-ray observation of Abell 2052, as well as archival VLA radio observations. The data reveal detailed structure in the inner parts of the cluster, including bubbles evacuated by the AGN's radio lobes, compressed bubble rims, filaments, and loops. Two concentric shocks are seen, and a temperature rise is measured for the innermost one. On larger scales, we report the first detection of an excess surface brightness spiral feature. The spiral has cooler temperatures, lower entropies, and higher abundances than its surroundings, and is …
We present a reanalysis of the cumulative ACIS S Chandra data set pointed at the double AGNs of the NGC 6240 merging galaxy, focusing on the hard energy bands containing the hard spectral continuum (5.5-5.9 keV), the redshifted Fe I K alpha line (6.0-6.4 keV), and the redshifted Fe XXV line (6.4-6.7 keV). We have used to the full the Chandra telescope angular resolution, and we have modeled the Chandra PSF by comparing pre-flight calibration model to the data for the two bright AGNs. With two complementary approaches: (1) studying the residuals after PSF subtraction, and (2) producing reconstr…
