A presymplectic structure on odd dimensional manifold is given by a closed 2-form which is nondegenerate, i.e., of maximal rank. We investigate geometry of presymplectic manifolds. Some basic theorems analogous to those in symplectic and contact topology are given and applied to study constructions of presymplectic manifolds. In particular, we describe how to glue presymplectic manifolds along a presymplectic submanifold, including surgery along a presymplectic circles.
In this paper, we extend the Atiyah--Guillemin--Sternberg convexity theorem and Delzant's classification of symplectic toric manifolds to presymplectic manifolds. We also define and study the Morita equivalence of presymplectic toric manifolds and of their corresponding framed momentum polytopes, which may be rational or non-rational. Toric orbifolds, quasifolds and non-commutative toric varieties may be viewed as the quotient of our presymplectic toric manifolds by the kernel isotropy foliation of the presymplectic form.
The convexity and Morse-theoretic properties of moment maps in symplectic geometry typically fail for presymplectic manifolds. We find a condition on presymplectic moment maps that prevents these failures. Our result applies for instance to Prato's quasifolds and to Hamiltonian actions on contact manifolds and cosymplectic manifolds.
We prove the rigidity of presymplectic actions of a compact semisimple Lie algebra on a presymplectic manifold of constant rank in the local and global case. The proof uses an abstract normal form theorem we had stated in a previous work, based on an iterative process of Nash-Moser type. In order to use correctly this abstract theorem, we need to construct a new smoothing operator for differential forms and multivector fields which preserves the presymplectic feature.
We describe Dirac structures on surfaces and 3-manifolds. Every Dirac structure on a surface $M$ is described either by a regular 1-foliation or by a section of a circle bundle obtained as a fiberwise compactification of the line bundle $\wedge^2TM$. Every Dirac structure on a 3-manifold $M$ is either the union of a presymplectic manifold and a foliated Poisson manifold, or the union of a Poisson manifold and a foliated presymplectic manifold.
Retractions maps are used to define a discretization of the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold as two copies of the configuration manifold where the dynamics take place. Such discretization maps can be conveniently lifted to the cotangent bundle so that symplectic integrators are constructed for Hamilton's equations. Optimal control problems are provided with a Hamiltonian framework by Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. That is why we use discretization maps and the integrability algorithm to obtain presymplectic integrators for optimal control problems.
We investigate the foliation defined by the kernel of an exact presymplectic form $dα$ of rank 2n on a (2n + r)-dimensional closed manifold M. For r = 2, we prove that the foliation has at least two leaves which are homeomorphic to a 2-dimensional torus, if M admits a locally free $T^2$-action which preserves $dα$ and satisfies that the function $α(Z_2)$ is constant, where $Z_1$, $Z_2$ are the infinitesimal generators of the $T^2$-action. We also give its generalization for r $\geq$ 1.
In previous work with M.C. Fernandes, we found a Lie algebroid symmetry for the Einstein evolution equations of general relativity. The present work was motivated by the effort to explain the coisotropic structure of the constraint subset for the initial value problem by extending the notion of hamiltonian structure from Lie algebra actions to general Lie algebroids over presymplectic manifolds. After comparing possible compatibility conditions between the anchor $A\to TM$ and the presymplectic structure on the base $M$, we choose the most natural of them, given by a suitably chosen connection…
We introduce geometric quantization for constant rank presymplectic structures with Riemannian null foliation and compact leaf closure space. We prove a quantization-commutes-with-reduction theorem in this context. Examples related to symplectic toric quasi-folds, suspensions of isometric actions of discrete groups, and K-contact manifolds are discussed.
Geometric structures on $\mathbb N Q$-manifolds, i.e.~non-negatively graded manifolds with an homological vector field, encode non-graded geometric data on Lie algebroids and their higher analogues. A particularly relevant class of structures consists of vector bundle valued differential forms. Symplectic forms, contact structures and, more generally, distributions are in this class. We describe vector bundle valued differential forms on non-negatively graded manifolds in terms of non-graded geometric data. Moreover, we use this description to present, in a unified way, novel proofs of known r…
Exotic Smooth Structures on Small 4-Manifolds with Odd Signatures
In the literature, there are two different versions of Hard Lefschetz theorems for a compact Sasakian manifold. The first version, due to Kacimi-Alaoui, asserts that the basic cohomology of a compact Sasakian manifold satisfies the transverse Lefschetz property. The second version, established far more recently by Cappelletti-Montano, De Nicola, and Yudin, holds for the De Rham cohomology of a compact Sasakian manifold. In the current paper, using the formalism of odd dimensional symplectic geometry, we prove a Hard Lefschetz theorem for a compact $K$-contact manifold, which implies immediatel…
Recently, Tsai-Tseng-Yau constructed new invariants of symplectic manifolds: a sequence of Aoo-algebras built of differential forms on the symplectic manifold. We show that these symplectic Aoo-algebras have a simple topological interpretation. Namely, when the cohomology class of the symplectic form is integral, these Aoo-algebras are equivalent to the standard de Rham differential graded algebra on certain odd-dimensional sphere bundles over the symplectic manifold. From this equivalence, we deduce for a closed symplectic manifold that Tsai-Tseng-Yau's symplectic Aoo-algebras satisfy the Cal…
