Two field 2-forms on the space-time manifold, in a relationship of duality, are presented and included in the extended phase-space structure used to describe relativistic particles having both electric and magnetic charges. By exterior derivatives, these forms yield the two groups of Maxwell equations, while specific integrality conditions ensure magnetic monopole or electric charge quantization. Some properties of the common characteristic vector of the dual 2-forms are discussed. It is shown that the coupled energy-density continuity equation and the eikonal equation represent a classical, infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system.
We show that the electromagnetic field tensor and the Lorentz Force are both a natural consequence of the geometric structure of Minkowskian space, being related to infinitesimal boosts and rotations in spacetime. The longstanding issue about the apparent empirical origin of the Lorentz Force is clarified.
By describing the dynamical evolution of a test charged particle in the presence of an electromagnetic field as a succession of infinitesimal Lorentz boosts and rotations it is possible to obtain the Lorentz Force of Electrodynamics. A consequence of this derivation at the classical level is that, given the existence of electric and magnetic fields, the form of the electromagnetic force acting on the particle can be regarded as arising from the geometry of Minkowskian spacetime.
Maxwell's vacuum equations are integrated for admissible electromagnetic fields in homogeneous spaces. Admissible electromagnetic fields are those for which the space group generates an algebra of symmetry operators ( integrals of motion ) that is isomorphic to the algebra of group operators. Two frames associated with the group of motions are used to obtain systems of ordinary differential equations to which Maxwell's equations reduce. The solutions are obtained in quadratures. The potentials of the admissible electromagnetic fields and the metrics of the spaces contained in the obtained solu…

The algebras of the integrals of motion of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon-Fock equations for a charged test particle moving in an external electromagnetic field in a spacetime manifold are found. The manifold admits a four-parameter groups of motions that act nontransitively on the spacetime. All admissible electromagnetic fields for which such algebras exist are found. In the case of an arbitrary n-dimensional Riemannian space on which the group of motions acts, it is proved that the admissible field does not deform the algebra of symmetry operators of the free Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein…
We give a set of local geometric conditions on a spacetime metric which are necessary and sufficient for it to be a null electrovacuum, that is, the metric is part of a solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a null electromagnetic field. These conditions are restrictions on a null congruence canonically constructed from the spacetime metric, and can involve up to five derivatives of the metric. The null electrovacuum conditions are counterparts of the Rainich conditions, which geometrically characterize non-null electrovacua. Given a spacetime satisfying the conditions for a null elec…
A new finite-range electromagnetic (EM) theory containing both electric and magnetic charges constructed using two vector potentials A^{} and Z^{} is formulated in the spacetime algebra (STA) and in the algebra of the three-dimensional physical space (APS) formalisms. Lorentz, local gauge and EM duality invariances are discussed in detail in the APS formalism. Moreover, considerations about signature and dimensionality of spacetime are discussed. Finally, the two formulations are compared. STA and APS are equally powerful in formulating our model, but the presence of a global commuting unit ps…
We prove two theorems which imply that any stationary nonlinear electromagnetic field obeying a dominant energy condition in a strictly stationary, everywhere regular, asymptotically flat spacetime must be either trivial or a stealth field. The first theorem holds in static spacetimes and is independent of the gravitational part of the action, as long as the coupling of the electromagnetic field to the gravitational field is minimal. The second theorem assumes Einstein--Hilbert gravitational action and relies on the positive energy theorem, but does not assume that the spacetime metric is stat…
We solve the source free electromagnetic wave equation in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times for curvature $K=0$ and $K=-1$. Deriving a solution expression in the form of spherical means we deduce and compare two properties of the Maxwell propagator namely, decay rates, as well as continuity through the space-time singularity to that of the scalar wave equation presented by Abbasi and Craig [1].
We review two procedures for constructing the vector potential of the electromagnetic field on Kerr spacetime, namely, the classic method of Cohen & Kegeles, yielding $A^μ$ in a radiation gauge, and the newer method of Frolov et al., yielding $A^μ$ in Lorenz gauge. We demonstrate that the vector potentials are related by straightforward gauge transformations, which we give in closed form. We obtain a new result for a separable Hertz potential $H^{μν}$ such that $A_{\text{lor}}^μ= \nabla_νH^{μν}$.
Making use of twistor structures and the Kerr theorem for shear-free null geodesic congruences, an infinite family of electromagnetic fields satisfying the homogeneous Maxwell equations in flat Minkowski and the associated curved Kerr-Schild backgrounds is obtained for any such congruence in a purely algebraic way. Simple examples of invariant axisymmetric Maxwell fields are presented.
Conditions for the appearance of topological charges are studied in the framework of the universal C*-algebra of the electromagnetic field, which is represented in any theory describing electromagnetism. It is shown that non-trivial topological charges, described by pairs of fields localised in certain topologically non-trivial spacelike separated regions, can appear in regular representations of the algebra only if the fields depend non-linearly on the mollifying test functions. On the other hand, examples of regular vacuum representations with non-trivial topological charges are constructed,…
The source-free Maxwell action is invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in arbitrary spacetimes. This leads to a conserved classical Noether charge. We show that this conservation law is broken at the quantum level in presence of a background classical gravitational field with a non-trivial Chern-Pontryagin invariant, in a parallel way to the chiral anomaly for massless Dirac fermions. Among the physical consequences, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field is not conserved.
We develop a general method to compute correlation functions of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states on a curved space. In a curved space, local transformation properties of FQH states are examined through local geometric variations, which are essentially governed by the gravitational anomaly. Furthermore, we show that the electromagnetic response of FQH states is related to the gravitational response (a response to curvature). Thus, the gravitational anomaly is also seen in the structure factor and the Hall conductance in flat space. The method is based on iteration of a Ward identity obtaine…
We find all analytic SU(2) Yang-Mills solutions on de Sitter space by reducing the field equations to Newton's equation for a particle in a particular 3d potential and solving the latter in a special case. In contrast, Maxwell's equations on de Sitter space can be solved in generality, by separating them in hysperspherical coordinates. Employing a well-known conformal map between (half of) de Sitter space and (the future half of) Minkowski space, the Maxwell solutions are mapped to a complete basis of rational electromagnetic knot configurations. We discuss some of their properties and illustr…
This paper studies the relativistic angular momentum for the generalized electromagnetic field, described by $r$-vectors in $(k,n)$ space-time dimensions, with exterior-algebraic methods. First, the angular-momentum tensor is derived from the invariance of the Lagrangian to space-time rotations (Lorentz transformations), avoiding the explicit need of the canonical tensor in Noether's theorem. The derivation proves the conservation law of angular momentum for generic values of $r$, $k$, and $n$. Second, an integral expression for the flux of the tensor across a $(k+n-1)$-dimensional surface of …
In this paper we discuss global existence of the solution of the Maxwell and Newton system of equations, describing the interaction of a rigid charge distribution with the electromagnetic field it generates. A unique solution is proved to exist (for regular charge distributions) on suitable homogeneous and non-homogeneous Sobolev spaces, for the electromagnetic field, and on coordinate and velocity space for the charge; provided initial data belong to the subspace that satisfies the divergence part of Maxwell's equations.
We show that the Laplace-Beltrami equation $\square_6 a =j$ in $(\setR^6,η)$, $η:= \mathrm{diag}(+----+)$, leads under very moderate assumptions to both the Maxwell equations and the conformal Eastwood-Singer gauge condition on conformally flat spaces including the spaces with a Robertson-Walker metric. This result is obtained through a geometric formalism which gives, as byproduct, simplified calculations. In particular, we build an atlas for all the conformally flat spaces considered which allows us to fully exploit the Weyl rescalling to Minkowski space.
The noncommutativity of a four-dimensional phase space is introduced from a purely symplectic point of view. We show that there is always a coordinate map to locally eliminate the gauge fluctuations inducing the deformation of the symplectic structure. This uses the Moser's lemma; a refined version of the celebrated Darboux theorem. We discuss the relation between the coordinates change arising from Moser's lemma and the Seiberg--Witten map. As illustration, we consider the quantum Hall systems on CP^2. We derive the action describing the electromagnetic interaction of Hall droplets. In partic…
A quantum inequality for the quantized electromagnetic field is developed for observers in static curved spacetimes. The quantum inequality derived is a generalized expression given by a mode function expansion of the four-vector potential, and the sampling function used to weight the energy integrals is left arbitrary up to the constraints that it be a positive, continuous function of unit area and that it decays at infinity. Examples of the quantum inequality are developed for Minkowski spacetime, Rindler spacetime and the Einstein closed universe.
We derive the equations governing the linear stability of Kerr-Newman spacetime to coupled electromagnetic-gravitational perturbations. The equations generalize the celebrated Teukolsky equation for curvature perturbations of Kerr, and the Regge-Wheeler equation for metric perturbations of Reissner-Nordström. Because of the "apparent indissolubility of the coupling between the spin-1 and spin-2 fields", as put by Chandrasekhar, the stability of Kerr-Newman spacetime can not be obtained through standard decomposition in modes. Due to the impossibility to decouple the modes of the gravitational …
A new approach is proposed for an electromagnetic field geometrisation. We show that interacting Maxwell and Dirac fields can be considered as a single connected space-time 4-manifold. The Dirac spinors appear wihtin such approach as basic fanctions for the manifold fundamental group representation and electric and magnertic fields appear as components of a curvature tensor of the manifold covering space.
