We report the first results of a study of variable point sources identified using multi-color time-series photometry from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 over a span of nearly 10 years (1998-2007). We construct a light-curve catalog of 221,842 point sources in the R.A. 0-4 h half of Stripe 82, limited to r = 22.0, that have at least 10 detections in the ugriz bands and color errors of < 0.2 mag. These objects are then classified by color and by cross-matching them to existing SDSS catalogs of interesting objects. We use inhomogeneous ensemble differential photometry techniques to greatly improve our sensitivity to variability. Robust variable identification methods are used to extract 6520 variable candidates in this dataset, resulting in an overall variable fraction of ~2.9% at the level of 0.05 mag variability. A search for periodic variables results in the identification of 30 eclipsing/ellipsoidal binary candidates, 55 RR Lyrae, and 16 Delta Scuti variables. We also identify 2704 variable quasars matched to the SDSS Quasar catalog (Schneider et al. 2007), as well as an additional 2403 quasar candidates identified by their non-stellar colors and variability properties. Finally, a sample of 11,328 point sources that appear to be nonvariable at the limits of our sensitivity is also discussed. (Abridged.)
A new version of the Catalog containing Sloan magnitudes for the brightest stars is presented. The accuracy of the data indicates that the Catalog is a reliable source of comparison star magnitudes for astronomical photometry. Version 2 complements the APASS database of fainter stars.
We present a spectroscopic catalog of 70,841 visually inspected M dwarfs from the seventh data release (DR7) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For each spectrum, we provide measurements of the spectral type, a number of molecular bandheads, and the H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta and Ca II K emission lines. In addition, we calculate the metallicity-sensitive parameter zeta and 3D space motions for most of the stars in the sample. Our catalog is cross-matched to Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) infrared data, and contains photometric distances for each star. Future studies will use the…
We analyze the magnetic activity of 59,318 M dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. This analysis explores the spatial distribution of M dwarf activity as a function of both vertical distance from the Galactic plane (Z) and planar distance from the Galactic center (R). We confirm the established trends of decreasing magnetic activity (as measured by H-alpha emission) with increasing distance from the mid-plane of the disk and find evidence for a trend in Galactocentric radius. We measure a non-zero radial gradient in the activity fraction in our analysis of stars with …
We report results from a continuation of our searches for high field magnetic white dwarfs paired in a detached binary with non degenerate companions. We made use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 catalog of Kleinman et al. (2013) with 19,712 spectroscopically-identified white dwarfs. These include 1,735 white dwarf plus M dwarf detached pairs (almost 10\% of the Kleinman at al.'s list). No new pairs were found, although we did recover the polar (AM~Herculis system) ST\,LMi in a low state of accretion. With the larger sample the original situation reported ten years ago remains intact now at…
We present a spectroscopic catalog of 70,841 visually inspected M dwarfs from the seventh data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For each spectrum, we provide measurements of the spectral type, a number of molecular bandheads, and the H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta and Ca II K emission lines. In addition, we calculate the metallicity-sensitive parameter zeta and identify a relationship between zeta and the g-r and r-z colors of M dwarfs. We assess the precision of our spectral types (which were assigned by individual examination), review the bulk attributes of the sample, and …
A new proper motion catalog is presented, combining the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with second epoch observations in the r band within a portion of the SDSS imaging footprint. The new observations were obtained with the 90prime camera on the Steward Observatory Bok 90 inch telescope, and the Array Camera on the U.S. Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station, 1.3 meter telescope. The catalog covers 1098 square degrees to r = 22.0, an additional 1521 square degrees to r = 20.9, plus a further 488 square degrees of lesser quality data. Statistical errors in the proper motions range from 5 mas/yea…
We present a method to reliably select variable white dwarfs from large area time domain surveys and apply this method in a pilot study to search for pulsating white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. From a sample 400 high-confidence white dwarf candidates, we identify 24 which show significant variability in their multi-epoch Stripe 82 data. Using colours, we further selected a sample of pulsating white dwarf (ZZ Ceti) candidates and obtained high cadence follow up for six targets. We confirm five of our candidates as cool ZZ Cetis, three of which are new discoveries. Among ou…
We present the Sloan Low-mass Wide Pairs of Kinematically Equivalent Stars (SLoWPoKES), a catalog of 1342 very-wide (projected separation >500 AU), low-mass (at least one mid-K--mid-M dwarf component) common proper motion pairs identified from astrometry, photometry, and proper motions in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A Monte Carlo based Galactic model is constructed to assess the probability of chance alignment for each pair; only pairs with a probability of chance alignment </= 0.05 are included in the catalog. The overall fidelity of the catalog is expected to be 98.35%. The selection algor…
We present a comparative analysis of atmospheric parameters obtained with the so-called photometric and spectroscopic techniques. Photometric and spectroscopic data for 1360 DA white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are used, as well as spectroscopic data from the Villanova White Dwarf Catalog. We first test the calibration of the ugriz photometric system by using model atmosphere fits to observed data. Our photometric analysis indicates that the ugriz photometry appears well calibrated when the SDSS to AB_95 zeropoint corrections are applied. The spectroscopic analysis of the s…
A key science driver for the next generation of wide-field optical and radio surveys is the exploration of the time variable sky. These surveys will have unprecedented sensitivity and areal coverage, but will be limited in their ability to detect variability on time scales longer than the lifetime of the surveys. We present a new precision, multi-epoch photometric catalog that spans 60 years by combining the USNO-B and SDSS Data Release 9 catalogs. We recalibrate the photometry of the original USNO-B catalog and create a catalog with two epochs of photometry in up to five different bands for 4…
A catalog of 8472 white dwarf (WD) candidates is presented, selected using reduced proper motions from the deep proper motion catalog of Munn et al. 2014. Candidates are selected in the magnitude range 16 < r < 21.5 over 980 square degrees, and 16 < r < 21.3 over an additional 1276 square degrees, within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging footprint. Distances, bolometric luminosities, and atmospheric compositions are derived by fitting SDSS ugriz photometry to pure hydrogen and helium model atmospheres (assuming surface gravities log g = 8). The disk white dwarf luminosity function (W…
We present a statistical parallax analysis of low-mass dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We calculate absolute r-band magnitudes (M_r) as a function of color and spectral type, and investigate changes in M_r with location in the Milky Way. We find that magnetically active M dwarfs are intrinsically brighter in M_r than their inactive counterparts at the same color or spectral type. Metallicity, as traced by the proxy zeta, also affects M_r, with metal poor stars having fainter absolute magnitudes than higher metallicity M dwarfs at the same color or spectral type. Additionally, …
We present a catalog of periodic stellar variability in the "Stripe 82" region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). After aggregating and recalibrating catalog-level data from the survey, we ran a period-finding algorithm (Supersmoother) on all point-source lightcurves. We used color selection to identify systems that are likely to contain low-mass stars, in particular M dwarfs and white dwarfs. In total, we found 207 candidates, the vast majority of which appear to be in eclipsing binary systems. The catalog described in this paper includes 42 candidate M dwarf / white dwarf pairs, 4 white…
The ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) was the first imaging X-ray survey of the entire sky. While X-ray source counterparts are known to range from distant quasars to nearby M dwarfs, the RASS data alone are often insufficient to determine the nature of an X-ray source. As a result, large-scale follow-up programs are required to construct samples of known X-ray emitters. We use optical data produced by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to identify 709 stellar X-ray emitters cataloged in the RASS and falling within the SDSS Data Release 1 footprint. Most of these are bright stars with coronal X-ray…
We study the photometric properties of stars in the data archive of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the prime aim being to understand the photometric calibration over the entire data set. It is confirmed that the photometric calibration for point sources has been made overall tightly against the SDSS standard stars. We have also confirmed that photometric synthesis of the SDSS spectrophotometric data gives broad band fluxes that agree with broad band photometry with errors no more than 0.04 mag and little tilt along the wide range of colours, verifying that the response functions of the S…
We present a sample of 20 runaway M dwarf candidates (RdMs) within 1 kpc of the Sun whose Galactocentric velocities exceed 400 km s$^{-1}$. The candidates were selected from the SDSS DR7 M Dwarf Catalog of West et al. (2011). Our RdMs have SDSS+USNO-B proper motions that are consistent with those recorded in the PPMXL, LSPM, and combined WISE+SDSS+2MASS catalogs. Sixteen RdMs are classified as dwarfs, while the remaining four RdMs are subdwarfs. We model the Galactic potential using a bulge-disk-halo profile (Kenyon et al. 2008; Brown et al. 2014). Our fastest RdM, with Galactocentric velocity…
Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the $(V-R)_{MACHO}$ or $(V-I)$ colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by a…
The Survey Science Centre of the XMM-Newton satellite released the first incremental version of the 2XMM catalogue in August 2008 . With more than 220,000 X-ray sources, the 2XMMi was at that time the largest catalogue of X-ray sources ever published and thus constitutes an unprecedented resource for studying the high-energy properties of various classes of X-ray emitters such as AGN and stars. The advent of the 7th release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey offers the opportunity to cross-match two major surveys and extend the spectral energy distribution of many 2XMMi sources towards the optica…
We present fitted UBVRI-ZY and u'g'r'i'z' magnitudes, spectral types and distances for 2.4M stars, derived from synthetic photometry of a library spectrum that best matches the Tycho2 BtVt, NOMAD Rn and 2MASS JHK_{2/S} catalog magnitudes. We present similarly synthesized multi-filter magnitudes, types and distances for 4.8M stars with 2MASS and SDSS photometry to g<16 within the Sloan survey region, for Landolt and Sloan primary standards, and for Sloan Northern (PT) and Southern secondary standards. The synthetic magnitude zeropoints for BtVt, UBVRI, ZvYv, JHK_{2/S}, JHK_{MKO}, Stromgren uvby…
By combining spectroscopic data from the LAMOST DR7, SDSS DR12, and corrected photometric data from the Gaia EDR3, we apply the Stellar Color Regression (SCR; Yuan et al. 2015a) method to recalibrate the SDSS Stripe 82 standard stars catalog of Ivezić et al. (2007). With a total number of about 30,000 spectroscopically targeted stars, we have mapped out the relatively large and strongly correlated photometric zero-point errors present in the catalog, $\sim$2.5 per cent in the $u$ band and $\sim$ 1 per cent in the $griz$ bands. Our study also confirms some small but significant magnitude depend…
Thanks to incredible advances in instrumentation, surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have been able to find and catalog billions of objects, ranging from local M dwarfs to distant quasars. Machine learning algorithms have greatly aided in the effort to classify these objects; however, there are regimes where these algorithms fail, where interesting oddities may be found. We present here an X-ray bright quasar misidentified as a red supergiant/X-ray binary, and a subsequent search of the SDSS quasar catalog for X-ray bright stars misidentified as quasars.
