Earth-alkaline-like atoms with ultra-narrow transitions open the door to a new regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics. That regime is characterized by a critical photon number that is many orders of magnitude smaller than what can be achieved in conventional systems. We show that it is possible to achieve superradiance in steady state with such systems. We discuss the basic underlying mechanisms as well as the key experimental requirements
We study the dynamics of two ensembles of atoms (or equivalently, atomic clocks) coupled to a bad cavity and pumped incoherently by a Raman laser. Our main result is the nonequilibrium phase diagram for this experimental setup in terms of two parameters - detuning between the clocks and the repump rate. There are three main phases - trivial steady state (Phase I), where all atoms are maximally pumped, nontrivial steady state corresponding to monochromatic superradiance (Phase II), and amplitude-modulated superradiance (Phase III). Phases I and II are fixed points of the mean-field dynamics, wh…
We study steady state phases of a one-dimensional array of Rydberg atoms coupled by a microwave (MW) field where the higher energy Rydberg state decays to the lower energy one via single-body and collective (superradiant) decay. Using mean-field approaches, we examine the interplay among the MW coupling, intra-state van der Waals (vdW) interaction, and single-body and collective dissipation between Rydberg states. A linear stability analysis reveals that a series of phases, including uniform, antiferromagnetic, oscillatory, and bistable and multistable phases can be obtained. Without the vdW i…
We investigate the different photon emission regimes created by a preexcited and collimated atomic beam passing through a single mode of an optical cavity. In the regime where the cavity degrees of freedom can be adiabatically eliminated, we find that the atoms undergo superradiant emission when the collective linewidth exceeds the transit-time broadening. We analyze the case where the atomic beam direction is slanted with respect to the cavity axis. For this situation, we find that a phase of continuous light emission similar to steady-state superradiance is established providing the tilt of …

We propose a solid-state based superradiance laser which is almost insensitive to the cavity mirror vibration. Therefore, it can compete with the best frequency-stable local oscillators. The long coherence time and the large optical density of rare-earth-ions (REIs) doped solids are employed to find a regime to demonstrate a steady-state laser emission with linewidth smaller than the atomic decay rate. The experimental parameters are discussed and intracavity photon number and laser linewidth are calculated based on the mean-field theory. A procedure for measuring absolute laser linewidth is p…
We show that the onset of steady-state superradiance in a bad cavity laser is preceded by a dissipative phase transition between two distinct phases of steady-state subradiance. The transition is marked by a non-analytic behavior of the cavity output power and the mean atomic inversion, as well as a discontinuity in the variance of the collective atomic inversion. In particular, for repump rates below a critical value, the cavity output power is strongly suppressed and does not increase with the atom number, while it scales linearly with atom number above this value. Remarkably, we find that t…

We develop a stochastic mean-field theory to describe active frequency measurements of pulsed superradiant emission, studied in recent experiments with strontium-87 atoms trapped in an optical lattice inside an optical cavity [M. Norcia, et al., Phys. Rev. X 8, 21036 (2018)]. Our theory reveals the intriguing dynamics of atomic ensembles with multiple transition frequencies, and it reproduces the superradiant beats signal, noisy power spectra, and frequency uncertainty in remarkable agreement with the experiments. Moreover, by reducing the number of atoms, elongating the superradiant pulses an…
We study the quantum dynamics of many-body arrays of two-level atoms in a driven cavity subject to collective decay and interactions mediated by the cavity field. We work in the bad cavity limit accessible, for example, using long-lived electronic clock states of alkaline earth atoms, for which the bare atomic linewidth is much less than the cavity linewidth. In the absence of interactions, our system reduces to previously studied models of collective fluorescence. We show that while interactions do not qualitatively change the steady state properties, they lead to a drastic change in the dyna…
