We demonstrate that possession of a single negative mode is not a sufficient criterion for an instanton to mediate exponential decay. For example, de Sitter space is generically stable against decay via the Coleman-De Luccia instanton. This is due to the fact that the de Sitter Euclidean action is bounded below, allowing for an approximately de Sitter invariant false vacuum to be constructed.
Perturbations of the Dirac field in the Schwarzschild spacetime are characterized by two wave equations (for two chiralities) with effective potentials which are iso-spectral and one of which is positive definite. Therefore, the stability of a Dirac field in the Schwarzschild background is straightforward. This is not so for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter case, because potentials for both chiralities have negative gaps and the fact that the stability is not automatically guaranteed in the asymptotically de Sitter case was apparently omitted in the literature. Performing the time-domain integratio…
Despite the recent evidence that anti-de Sitter spacetime is nonlinearly unstable, we argue that many asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions are nonlinearly stable. This includes geons, boson stars, and black holes. As part of our argument, we calculate the frequencies of long-lived gravitational quasinormal modes of AdS black holes in various dimensions. We also discuss a new class of asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions describing noncoalescing black hole binaries.
The existence of de-Sitter solutions and their stability within string theory became, in recent years, one of the central research questions within the string theory community. The so-called de-Sitter conjecture states that the de-Sitter vacua are unstable within string theory. Here, we study the de-Sitter solutions in string theory and their stability in the time direction using the $O(d,d)$ symmetry approach allowing for the calculation of the generic form of the string theory effective action. We study the undiscussed case of the constant generalized dilaton as well as the general form of d…
Conditions for thermodynamic stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter rotating black holes in D-dimensions are determined. Local thermodynamic stability requires not only positivity conditions on the specific heat and the moment of inertia tensor but it is also necessary that the adiabatic compressibility be positive. It is shown that, in the absence of a cosmological constant, neither rotation nor charge is sufficient to ensure full local thermodynamic stability of a black hole. Thermodynamic stability properties of anti-de Sitter Myers-Perry black holes are investigated for both singly spi…
We study the stability under the perturbation and the related anti-evaporation of the Nariai space-time in bigravity. If we impose specific condition for the solutions and parameters, we obtain asymptotically de Sitter space-time, and show the existence of the Nariai space-time as a background solution. Considering the perturbation around the Nariai space-time up to first order, we investigate the behavior of black hole horizon. We show that the anti-evaporation does not occur on the classical level in the bigravity.
We study the backreaction of superhorizon fluctuations of a light quantum scalar field on a classical de Sitter geometry by means of the Wilsonian renormalisation group. This allows us to treat the gravitationally amplified fluctuations in a nonperturbative manner and to analytically follow the induced renormalisation flow of the spacetime curvature as long wavelength modes are progressively integrated out. Unbounded loop corrections in the deep infrared are eventually screened by nonperturbative effects which stabilise the geometry.
We elaborate on the cosmological implications of the recently established non-perturbative $O(D,D$)-symmetric approach. Following the $α'$-complete Friedmann equations, we provide a qualitative description of the dynamics of anisotropy perturbations. We find that the spacetime stability depends on the sign of the generalized dilaton time derivative. We consider isotropic limits and find possible mechanism for pre-big bang cosmology, governed by the value of cosmological constant.
A new proof of Friedrich's theorem on the existence and stability of asymptotically de Sitter spaces in 3+1 dimensions is given, which extends to all even dimensions. In addition, we characterize the possible limits of spaces which are globally asymptotically de Sitter, to the past and future.
We find a new instability in the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes against charged scalar perturbations with vanishing angular momentum, $l=0$. We show that such an instability is caused by superradiance. The instability does not occur for an larger angular index, as explicitely proven for $l=1$. Our results are obtained from a numerical investigation of the time domain profiles of the perturbations.
Flat electrical charged black holes in 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space have been applied to the study of the phase diagram of quark matter via AdS/CFT correspondence. In such application it is argued that since the temperature of the quark gluon plasma is bounded away from zero, the dual black hole cannot be arbitrarily cold, but becomes unstable due to stringy instability once it reaches sufficiently low temperature. We study the stringy stability of flat dilaton black holes with dilaton coupling $α=1$ in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space and show that unlike the purely electrically char…
We consider the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations for small deviations around de Sitter spacetime including the vacuum polarization effects of conformal fields. Employing the method of order reduction, we find the exact solutions for general metric perturbations (of scalar, vector and tensor type). Our exact (nonperturbative) solutions show clearly that in this case de Sitter is stable with respect to small metric deviations and a late-time attractor. Furthermore, they also reveal a breakdown of perturbative solutions for a sufficiently long evolution inside the horizon. Our results …
A thin-shell wormhole is crafted by the cut-and-paste method of two Bardeen de-Sitter black holes using Darmois-Israel formalism. Energy conditions are considered for different values of magnetic charge while both mass and cosmological constant are fixed. The attractive and repulsive characteristics of the throat of the thin-shell wormhole are also examined through the radial acceleration. Dynamics and stability of the wormhole are studied around the static solutions of the linearized radial perturbations at the throat of the wormhole. The regions of stability are determined by checking out th…
Within the context of modified gravity and dark energy scenarios of the accelerating universe, we study the stability of de Sitter space with respect to inhomogeneous perturbations using a gauge-independent formalism. In modified gravity the stability condition is exactly the same that one obtains from a homogeneous perturbation analysis, while the stability condition in scalar-tensor gravity is more restrictive.
We develop the general reconstruction scheme in two scalar model. The quintom-like theory which may describe (different) non-singular Little Rip or de Sitter cosmology is reconstructed. (In)stability of such dark energy cosmologies as well as the flow to fixed points is studied. The stability of Little Rip universe which leads to dissolution of bound objects sometime in future indicates that no classical transition to de Sitter space occurs.
The stability of black holes and solitons in d-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time against scalar field condensation is discussed. The resulting solutions are "hairy" black holes and solitons, respectively. In particular, we will discuss static black hole solutions with hyperbolic, flat and spherical horizon topology and emphasize that two different type of instabilities exist depending on whether the scalar field is charged or uncharged, respectively. We will also discuss the influence of Gauss-Bonnet curvature terms. The results have applications within the AdS/CFT correspondence and descr…
We present a detailed analysis for the classical stability of a four dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS$_4$) by decomposing the first-order perturbations of a spherical symmetric gravitational field into the so called tensor harmonics which transform as irreducible representative of the rotation group (Regge-Wheeler decomposition). It is shown that there is no nontrivial stationary perturbation for the angular momentum $l < 2$. The stability analysis forces the frequency of the gravitational modes to be constrained in a way that the frequency of scalar modes are constrained.
We compute 1-loop corrections to Lorentz-signature de Sitter-invariant 2-point functions defined by the interacting Euclidean vacuum for massive scalar quantum fields with cubic and quartic interactions. Our results apply to all masses for which the free Euclidean de Sitter vacuum is well-defined, including values in both the complimentary and the principal series of SO(D,1). In dimensions where the interactions are renormalizeable we provide absolutely convergent integral representations of the corrections. These representations suffice to analytically extract the leading behavior of the 2-po…
We show that the Hartle-Hawking vacuum for theories of interacting massive scalars in de Sitter space is both perturbatively well-defined and stable in the IR. Correlation functions in this state may be computed on the Euclidean section and Wick-rotated to Lorentz-signature. The results are manifestly de Sitter-invariant and contain only the familiar UV singularities. More importantly, the connected parts of all Lorentz-signature correlators decay at large separations of their arguments. Our results apply to all cases in which the free Euclidean vacuum is well defined, including scalars with m…
We study a class of three-point functions on the de Sitter universe and on the asymptotic cone. A blending of geometrical ideas and analytic methods is used to compute some remarkable integrals, on the basis of a generalized star-triangle identity living on the cone and on the complex de Sitter manifold. We discuss an application of the general results to the study of the stability of scalar particles on the Sitter universe.
We diagram the behavior of 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime against horizon formation in the gravitational collapse of a scalar field, treating the scalar field mass and width of initial data as free parameters, which we call the stability phase diagram. We find that the class of stable initial data becomes larger and shifts to smaller widths as the field mass increases. In addition to classifying initial data as stable or unstable, we identify two other classes based on nonperturbative behavior. The class of metastable initial data forms a horizon over longer time scales than suggested …
A detailed stability analysis is presented for the de Sitter solution with a homogeneous magnetic field that was recently found in the context of a $U(1)$ gauge theory nonminimally coupled to scalar-tensor gravity. The magnetic field is `stealth' in the sense that the corresponding stress-energy tensor is of the form of an effective cosmological constant and thus is isotropic despite the fact that the magnetic field has a preferred spatial direction. We study the stability of the solution against linear perturbations in the subhorizon and superhorizon limits. We then present some explicit exam…
We investigate the scalar field dynamics of models with nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term and derive the structure of the effective potential and conditions for stable de Sitter solutions in general. Specializing to specific couplings, we explore the possibility of realizing the stable de Sitter configurations which may have implications for both the early Universe and late time evolution.
We study the stability of charged solitons in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We show that for appropriate choices of the parameters of the model these solutions become unstable to form scalar hair. We find that the existence of charged solitons with scalar hair depends crucially on the charge and the mass of the scalar field. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum of solutions on the mass of the scalar field in detail. For positive mass of the scalar field the hairy solitons can be interpreted as charged boson stars. We find that for sufficiently small value of the charg…
The stability of de Sitter spacetime in Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with projectability but without detailed balance condition is studied. It is found that, in contrast to the case of the Minkowski background, the spin-0 graviton now is stable for any given $ξ$, and free of ghost for $ξ\le 0$ in the infrared limit, where $ξ$ is the dynamical coupling constant.
We present results from a detailed study of spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field dynamics with a negative cosmological constant in four to nine spacetime dimensions. This study is the first to present a detailed examination of the dynamics in AdS beyond five dimensions, including a detailed comparison with numerical solutions of perturbative methods and their gauge dependence. Using these perturbative methods, we provide evidence that the oscillatory divergence of the first derivative used to argue for instability of anti-de Sitter space by Bizon et al. is a gauge-dependent eff…
We employ holographic duality to compute $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$ in strongly coupled $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and then study evolution of the semiclassical Einstein field equations sourced by $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$. Linearizing about de Sitter space, we find that the semiclassical equations of motion reduce to a four dimensional scalar wave equation coupled to a five dimensional scalar wave equation. We compute the mode spectrum of these equations and find that there exists a critical value of the Hubble constant $H_c$ for which de Sitter space is unstable when $H <…
We study the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, neutral and non-rotating black holes in conformal (Weyl) gravity. To this end, we apply different methods: (i) the evaluation of the specific heat; (ii) the study of the entropy concavity; (iii) the geometrical approach to thermodynamics known as \textit{thermodynamic geometry}; (iv) the Poincaré method that relates equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics. We show that the thermodynamic geometry approach can be applied to conformal gravity too, because all the key thermodynamic variables are insensitive to Weyl scaling. The first …
We investigate the stability of a new warped black string with nontrivial topologies in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. After studying the linear gravitational perturbation, we find that this black string is unstable when the Kaluza-Klein mass falls in a certain range and the instability exists for all topological spacetimes.
The system of extended objects interplaying with a black hole describes or mimics various gravitational phenomena. In this brief paper, we report the results of stability analysis of codimension-one Dirac-Nambu-Goto branes rest at the equatorial plane of $d$-dimensional spherical black holes, including the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter black holes. For the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter backgrounds the stability of branes is shown analytically by means of a deformation technique. In contrast, for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background we demonstrate with the …

We investigate stability of the D-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de-Sitter metrics as solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. We have shown that asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes are dynamically stable for all values of charge and anti-de Sitter radius in $D=5,6...11$ dimensional space-times. This does not contradict to dynamical instability of RN-AdS black holes found by Gubser in $\mathcal{N}=8$ gauged supergravity, because the latter instability comes from the tachyon mode of the scalar field, coupled to the system. Asymptotically AdS black holes are known to be thermodyna…
This work uses Lorentz-signature in-in perturbation theory to analyze the late-time behavior of correlators in time-dependent interacting massive scalar field theory in de Sitter space. We study a scenario recently considered by Krotov and Polyakov in which the coupling $g$ turns on smoothly at finite time, starting from $g=0$ in the far past where the state is taken to be the (free) Bunch-Davies vacuum. Our main result is that the resulting correlators (which we compute at the one-loop level) approach those of the interacting Hartle-Hawking state at late times. We argue that similar results s…
We investigate thermodynamic and dynamical stability of a family of six-dimensional braneworld solutions with de Sitter branes. First, we investigate thermodynamic stability in terms of de Sitter entropy. We see that the family of solutions is divided into two distinct branches: the high-entropy branch and the low-entropy branch. By analogy with ordinary thermodynamics, the high-entropy branch is expected to be stable and the low-entropy branch to be unstable. Next, we investigate dynamical stability by analyzing linear perturbations around the solutions. Perturbations are decomposed into scal…
The thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes confined within finite isothermal cavities are examined. In contrast to the Schwarzschild case, the infinite cavity limit may be taken which, if suitably stated, remains double valued. This allows the correspondence between non-existence of negative modes for classical solutions and local thermodynamic stability of the equilibrium configuration of such solutions to be shown in a well defined manner. This is not possible in the asymptotically flat case. Furthermore, the non-existence of negative modes for the larger black …
d5 higher derivative gravity on the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole background is considered. Two horizons SdS BHs are not in thermal equilibrium and Hawking-Page phase transitions are not expected there, unlike to the case of AdS BHs. It is demonstrated that there exists the regime of d5 theory where Nariai BH which is extremal limit of SdS BH is stable. It is in the contrast with Einstein gravity on such backgroundwhere only pure de Sitter space is always stable. Speculating on the applications in proposed dS/CFT correspondence, these two (de Sitter and Nariai) stable spaces may cor…
A non-local gravity model, which includes a function $f(\Box^{-1} R)$, where $\Box$ is the d'Alembert operator, is considered. For the model with an exponential $f(\Box^{-1} R)$ de Sitter solutions are explored, without any restrictions on the parameters. Using Hubble-normalized variables, the stability of the de Sitter solutions is investigated, with respect to perturbations in the Bianchi I metric, in the case of zero cosmological constant, and sufficient conditions for stability are obtained.
We present further no-go theorems for classical de Sitter vacua in Type II string theory, i.e., de Sitter constructions that do not invoke non-perturbative effects or explicit supersymmetry breaking localized sources. By analyzing the stability of the 4D potential arising from compactification on manfiolds with curvature, fluxes, and orientifold planes, we found that additional ingredients, beyond the minimal ones presented so far, are necessary to avoid the presence of unstable modes. We enumerate the minimal setups for (meta)stable de Sitter vacua to arise in this context.
We investigate stability of two branches of Freund-Rubin compactification from thermodynamic and dynamical perspectives. Freund-Rubin compactification allows not only trivial solutions but also warped solutions describing warped product of external de Sitter space and internal deformed sphere. We study dynamical stability by analyzing linear perturbations around solutions in each branch. Also we study thermodynamic stability based on de Sitter entropy. We show complete agreement of thermodynamic and dynamical stabilities of this system. Finally, we interpret the results in terms of effective e…
We examine the thermodynamic stability of large black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, and we demonstrate numerically that black holes which lack local thermodynamic stability often also lack stability against small perturbations. This shows that no-hair theorems do not apply in anti-de Sitter space. A heuristic argument, based on thermodynamics only, suggests that if there are any violations of Cosmic Censorship in the evolution of unstable black holes in anti-de Sitter space, they are beyond the reach of a perturbative analysis.
We investigate the stability of four-dimensional dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in anti-de Sitter space. We prove that, in a neighbourhood of the embedded trivial (Schwarzschild-)anti-de Sitter solution, there exist non-trivial dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of the field equations which are stable under linear, spherically symmetric, perturbations of the metric and non-Abelian gauge field.
We review O$(d,d)$ Covariant String Cosmology to all orders in $α'$ in the presence of matter and study its solutions. We show that the perturbative analysis for a constant dilaton in the absence of a dilatonic charge does not lead to a time-independet equation of state. Meanwhile, the non-perturbative equations of motion allow de Sitter solutions in the String frame parametrized by the equation of state and the dilatonic charge. Among this set of solutions, we show that a cosmological constant equation of state implies a de Sitter solution both in String and Einstein frames while a winding eq…
We demonstrate the existence of static stable spherical fluid shells in the Schwarzschild-Rindler-anti-de Sitter (SRAdS) spacetime where $ds^2 = f(r)dt^{2} -\frac{dr^{2}}{f(r)}-r^{2}(dθ^2 +\sin ^2 θdϕ^2)$ with $f(r) = 1 -\frac{2Gm}{r} + 2 b r -\fracΛ{3}r^2$. This is an alternative to the well known gravastar geometry where the stability emerges due to the combination of the repulsive forces of the interior de Sitter space with the attractive forces of the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. In the SRAdS spacetime the repulsion that leads to stability of the shell comes from a negative Rindler te…
We study particle decay in de Sitter space-time as given by first order perturbation theory in a Lagrangian interacting quantum field theory. We study in detail the adiabatic limit of the perturbative amplitude and compute the "phase space" coefficient exactly in the case of two equal particles produced in the disintegration. We show that for fields with masses above a critical mass $m_c$ there is no such thing as particle stability, so that decays forbidden in flat space-time do occur here. The lifetime of such a particle also turns out to be independent of its velocity when that lifetime is …
We study the stability of static, hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time against the formation of scalar hair. Close to extremality the black holes possess a near-horizon topology of AdS_2 x H^3 such that within a certain range of the scalar field mass one would expect that they become unstable to the condensation of an uncharged scalar field. We confirm this numerically and observe that there exists a family of hairy black hole solutions labelled by the number of nodes of the scalar field function. We construct explicit examples of solutions w…
We work on the relation between the local thermodynamic instability and the dynamical instability of large black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space proposed by Gubser and Mitra. We find that all perturbations suppressing the metric fluctuations at linear order become dynamically unstable when black holes lose the local thermodynamic stability. We discuss how dynamical instabilities can be explained by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
We propose an investigation of stability of vacua in string theory by studying their stability with respect to a (suitable) world-sheet renormalization group (RG) flow. We prove geometric stability of (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter (AdS) space (i.e., $\mathbf{H}^n$) with respect to the simplest RG flow in closed string theory, the Ricci flow. AdS space is not a fixed point of Ricci flow. We therefore choose an appropriate flow for which it is a fixed point, prove a linear stability result for AdS space with respect to this flow, and then show this implies its geometric stability with respect to Ri…
We present a 4-dimensional back reaction analysis of de Sitter space for a conformally coupled scalar field in the presence of vacuum energy initialized in the Bunch-Davies vacuum. In contrast to the usual semi-classical prescription, as the source term in the Friedmann equations we use expectation values where the unobservable information hidden by the cosmological event horizon has been neglected i.e. coarse grained over. It is shown that in this approach the energy-momentum is precisely thermal with constant temperature despite the dilution from the expansion of space due to a flux of energ…
We discuss several aspects of the relation between asymptotically AdS and asymptotically dS spacetimes including: the continuation between these types of spaces, the global stability of asymptotically dS spaces and the structure of limits within this class, holographic renormalization, and the maximal mass conjecture of Balasubramanian-deBoer-Minic.
We study stability of the Dynamical Fixed Points (DFPs) of the cascading gauge theory at strong coupling in de Sitter space-time. We compute the spectra of the perturbative fluctuations and identify stable/unstable DFPs, characterized by the ratio of the strong coupling scale $Λ$ of the gauge theory and the Hubble constant $H$ of the background space-time. We discover a new phenomenon in the spectrum of gravitational fluctuations of a non-conformal holographic model: distinct branches of the fluctuations for $H\gg Λ$ coalesce for sufficiently low $\frac{H}Λ$, leading to the removal of some exc…
We classified in arXiv:2201.04152 certain 10d supergravity solutions with a 4d de Sitter, Minkowski or anti-de Sitter spacetime. We then found new solutions in previously unexplored classes. In this paper we study their properties, compare them to swampland conjectures, and make new observations. Using new numerical tools, we first identify all Lie algebras underlying the 6d group manifolds, allowing us to discuss their compactness. We then investigate scale separation, and prove related no-go theorems. Last but not least, we automatize and analyze the stability of all solutions. This leads us…
We study gravitational theories with a cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature squared term and analyze the possibility of de Sitter expanding spacetime with a constant internal space. We find that there are two branches of the de Sitter solutions: Both the curvature of the internal space and the cosmological constant are (1) positive and (2) negative. From the stability analysis, we show that the de Sitter solution of the case (1) is unstable, while that in the case (2) is stable. Namely de Sitter solution in the present system is stable if the cosmological constant is negative. …
Perturbative gravity in global de Sitter space is subject to so-called linearization stability constraints: If they are to couple consistently to the gravitational field, quantum states must be invariant under the de Sitter isometries. While standard Fock spaces contain no de Sitter-invariant states apart from (possibly) the vacuum, a full Hilbert space of de Sitter-invariant quantum states can be constructed via group averaging techiniques. We re-examine the simple toy model of de Sitter group averaging given by the free 1+1 scalar field, expanding on an earlier analysis by Higuchi. Our purpo…
We examine the thermodynamics and stability of 5-dimensional flat anti-de Sitter (AdS) black strings, locally asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes whose spatial sections are AdS black holes with Ricci flat horizons. We find that there is a phase transition for the flat AdS black string when the AdS soliton string is chosen as the thermal background. We find that this bulk phase transition corresponds to a 4-dimensional flat AdS black hole to AdS soliton phase transition on the boundary Karch-Randall branes. We compute the possibility of a phase transition from a flat AdS black string to a …
We obtain all the stationary vacua of de Sitter space by classifying the inequivalent timelike isometries of the de Sitter group. Besides the static vacuum, de Sitter space also admits a family of rotating vacua, which we use to obtain Kerr-de Sitter solutions in various dimensions. By writing the metric in a coordinate system adapted to the rotating Hamiltonian, we show that empty de Sitter space admits not only an observer-dependent horizon but also an observer-dependent ergosphere.
We study the linear stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in general relativity in spacetime dimension $d\ge4$. Our approach is an adaptation of the general framework of Hollands and Wald, which gives a stability criterion in terms of the sign of the canonical energy, $\mathcal{E}$. The general framework was originally formulated for static or stationary and axisymmetric black holes in the asymptotically flat case, and the stability analysis for that case applies only to axisymmetric perturbations. However, in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter case, the stability analysis requ…
