Compaction is considered and embedded into broader granular behavior. Reversible compaction is related to the pressure exerted by agitated grains, a quantity relevant to dense flow. Irreversible compaction is derived from the loss of elastic deformation, the physics behind elasto-plastic flows.
In both nature and engineering, loosely packed granular materials are often compacted inside confined geometries. Here, we explore such behaviour in a quasi-two dimensional geometry, where parallel rigid walls provide the confinement. We use the discrete element method to investigate the stress distribution developed within the granular packing as a result of compaction due to the displacement of a rigid piston. We observe that the stress within the packing increases exponentially with the length of accumulated grains, and show an extension to current analytic models which fits the measured st…
This paper analyzes the compaction behavior of assemblies composed of soft (elastic) spherical particles beyond the jammed state, using three-dimensional non-smooth contact dynamic simulations. The assemblies of particles are characterized using the evolution of the packing fraction, the coordination number, and the von Misses stress distribution within the particles as the confining stress increases. The packing fraction increases and tends toward a maximum value close to $1$, and the mean coordination number increases as a square root of the packing fraction. As the confining stress increase…
We perform numerical simulations of a two-dimensional frictional granular system under oscillatory shear confined by constant pressure. We found that the system undergoes dilatancy as the strain increases. We confirmed that compaction also takes place at an intermediate strain amplitude for a small mutual friction coefficient between particles. We also found that compaction depends on the confinement pressure while dilatancy little depends on the pressure.
A systematic and mechanistic connection between granular materials' macroscopic and grain level behaviors is developed for monodisperse systems of spherical elastic particles under die compaction. The Granular Micromechanics Approach (GMA) with static assumption is used to derive the stiffness tensor of transversely isotropic materials, from the average behavior of particle-particle interactions in all different directions at the microscale. Two particle-scale directional density distribution functions, namely the directional distribution of a combined mechano-geometrical property and the dire…
We report the simultaneous softening and compaction of a confined dense granular pack in acoustic resonance experiments. Elastic softening is manifested by a reduction of the shear-wave speed, as the wave amplitude increases beyond some threshold. No macroscopic rearrangement of grains or dilatancy is observed; instead, elastic softening is accompanied by a tiny amount of compaction on the scale of grain asperities. We explain these apparent contradictory observations using a theoretical model, based on shear transformation zones (STZs), of soft spots and slipping contacts. It predicts a linea…
In this letter, we report on an experimental study which analyzes the compressive behavior of 2D bidisperse granular assemblies made of soft (hyperelastic) and hard grains in varying proportions ($κ$). By means of a recently developed uniaxial compression set-up \cite{vu2019_pre} and using advanced Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method, we follow, beyond the jamming point, the evolution of the main mechanical observables, from the global scale down to the strain field inside each deformable grain. First, we experimentally validate and extend to the uni-axial case a recently proposed micro-mec…
We explore the compaction dynamics of a granular pile after a hard quench from a liquid into the glassy regime. First, we establish that the otherwise athermal granular pile during tapping exhibits annealing behavior comparable to glassy polymer or colloidal systems. Like those other systems, the pile undergoes a glass transition and "freezes" into different non-equilibrium glassy states at low agitation for different annealing speeds, starting from the same initial equilibrium state at high agitation. Then, we quench the system instantaneously from the highly-agitated state to below the glass…
We investigate the transient dynamics of a sheared suspension of neutrally buoyant particles under pressure-imposed conditions, subject to a sudden change in shear rate or external pressure. Discrete Element Method simulations show that, depending on the flow parameters (particle and system size, initial volume fraction), the early stress response of the suspension may strongly differ from the prediction of the Suspension Balance Model based on the steady-state rheology. We show that a two-phase model incorporating the Reynolds-like dilatancy law of Pailha & Pouliquen (2009), which prescribes …
We report three-dimensional particle mechanics static calculations that predict the microstructure evolution during die-compaction of elastic spherical particles up to relative densities close to one. We employ a nonlocal contact formulation that remains predictive at high levels of confinement by removing the classical assumption that contacts between particles are formulated locally as independent pair-interactions. The approach demonstrates that the coordination number depends on the level of compressibility, i.e., on the Poisson's ratio, of the particles. Results also reveal that distribut…
Different compaction processes of the nanosized granular system, which is a prototype of an alumina nanopowder, are studied by the granular dynamics method. For all processes: compaction curves ''density vs. pressure'' of the powder compact are calculated, the elastic and the plastic parts are extracted from the total deformation, the body elastic moduli are determined within the isotropic solid approximation. The inadequacy of the isotropy approximation is established. The nanopowder yield surface is constructed in the space of stress tensor invariants. The inapplicability of the traditional …
We show that a freshly sedimented granular bed settles and creeps forward over extended periods of time under an applied hydrodynamic shear stress, which is below the critical value for bedload transport. The rearrangements are found to last over a time scale which is millions of times the sedimentation time scale of a grain in the fluid. Compaction occurs uniformly throughout the bed, but creep is observed to decay exponentially with depth, and decreases over time. The granular volume fraction in the bed is found to increase logarithmically, saturating at the random close packing value $ϕ_{rc…
We analyze the transport properties of a low density ensemble of identical macroscopic particles immersed in an active fluid. The particles are modeled as inelastic hard spheres (granular gas). The non-homogeneous active fluid is modeled by means of a non-uniform stochastic thermostat. The theoretical results are validated with a numerical solution of the corresponding the kinetic equation (direct simulation Monte Carlo method). We show a steady flow in the system that is accurately described by Navier-Stokes (NS) hydrodynamics, even for high inelasticity. Surprisingly, we find that the deviat…
