We discuss the PPN Solar-System constraints and the GW stochastic background considering some recently proposed $f(R)$ gravity models which satisfy both cosmological and stability conditions. Using the definition of PPN-parameters $γ$ and $β$ in terms of $f(R)$-models and the definition of scalar GWs, we compare and discuss if it is possible to search for parameter ranges of $f(R)$-models working at Solar System and GW stochastic background scale.
Recently we discussed a multimetric gravity theory containing several copies of standard model matter each of which couples to its own metric tensor. This construction contained dark matter sectors interacting repulsively with the visible matter sector, and was shown to lead to cosmological late-time acceleration. In order to test the theory with high-precision experiments within the solar system we here construct a simple extension of the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism for multimetric gravitational backgrounds. We show that a simplified version of this extended formalism allows t…
We analyze seven different viable $f(R)$-gravities towards the Solar System tests and stochastic gravitational waves background. The aim is to achieve experimental bounds for the theory at local and cosmological scales in order to select models capable of addressing the accelerating cosmological expansion without cosmological constant but evading the weak field constraints. Beside large scale structure and galactic dynamics, these bounds can be considered complimentary in order to select self-consistent theories of gravity working at the infrared limit. It is demonstrated that seven viable $f(…
We study homogeneous isotropic universe in a graviton-dilaton theory obtained, in a previous paper, by a simple requirement that the theory be able to predict non trivial values for $β$ and/or $γ$ for a charge neutral point star, without any naked singularities. We find that in this universe the physical time can be continued indefinitely into the past or future, and that all the physical curvature invariants are always finite, showing the absence of big bang singularity. Adding a dilaton potential, we find again the same features. As a surprising bonus, there emerges naturally a Brans-Dicke f…
General Relativity extensions based on Renormalization Group effects are motivated by a known physical principle and constitute a class of extended gravity theories that have some unexplored unique aspects. In this work we develop in detail the Newtonian and post Newtonian limits of a realisation called Renormalization Group extended General Relativity (RGGR). Special attention is taken to the external potential effect, which constitutes a type of screening mechanism typical of RGGR. In the Solar System, RGGR depends on a single dimensionless parameter $\bar ν_\odot$, and this parameter is suc…
Lee. et.al. (1976) analysed the bimetric theory with the help of parameterized post Newtonian (PPN) formalism. They found that the post Newtonian limit of the theory is identical with that of general theory of relativity except for their PPN parameter $α_{2}$, on the basis of cosmological considerations. In the present paper it is pointed out that feasibility of such considerations are doubtful in five dimensional bimetric theory of relativity. As the universe is unique and is governed by physical laws, many different cosmologies are possible. Examples are given for some possible cosmological …
We perform a post-Newtonian (PN) solar system analysis for Palatini $f(R)$ theories considering finite volume non-spherical planets and with emphasis to $f(R)$ functions that are analytical about $R=0$. First we consider the Will-Nordtvedt parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, from which the metric is shown to depend, in general, on terms not covered by the standard PPN potentials. Hence, a full analysis of the PN equations of motion is performed. From the latter we conclude that, apart from redefinitions on the internal energy and the pressure, which cannot be constrained by solar syst…
Einstein's theory of gravity has been extensively tested on solar system scales, and for isolated astrophysical systems, using the perturbative framework known as the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This framework is designed for use in the weak-field and slow-motion limit of gravity, and can be used to constrain a large class of metric theories of gravity with data collected from the aforementioned systems. Given the potential of future surveys to probe cosmological scales to high precision, it is a topic of much contemporary interest to construct a similar framework to link Ein…
PPN-limit of higher order theories of gravity represents a still controversial matter of debate and no definitive answer has been provided, up to now, about this issue. By exploiting the analogy between scalar-tensor and fourth-order theories of gravity, one can generalize the PPN-limit formulation. By using the definition of the PPN-parameters $γ$ and $β$ in term of the $f(R)$ derivatives, we show that a family of third-order polynomial theories, in the Ricci scalar $R$, turns out to be compatible with the PPN-limit and the deviation from General Relativity theoretically predicted agree with …
Previous solar system constraints of the Brans-Dicke (BD) parameter $ω$ have either ignored the effects of the scalar field potential (mass terms) or assumed a highly massive scalar field. Here, we interpolate between the above two assumptions and derive the solar system constraints on the BD parameter $ω$ for {\it any} field mass. We show that for $ω=O(1)$ the solar system constraints relax for a field mass $m \gsim 20 \times m_{AU}= 20\times 10^{-27}GeV$.
Although general relativity (GR) has been precisely tested at the solar system scale, precise tests at a galactic or cosmological scale are still relatively insufficient. Here, in order to test GR at the galactic scale, we use the newly compiled galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing (SGL) sample to constrain the parameter $γ_{PPN}$ in the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. We employ the Pantheon sample of type Ia supernovae observation to calibrate the distances in the SGL systems using the Gaussian Process method, which avoids the logical problem caused by assuming a cosmologica…

Screened modified gravity (SMG) is a kind of scalar-tensor theories with screening mechanisms, which can generate screening effect to suppress the fifth force in high density environments and pass the solar system tests. Meanwhile, the potential of scalar field in the theories can drive the acceleration of the late universe. In this paper, we calculate the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters $γ$ and $β$, the effective gravitational constant $G_{\rm eff}$ and the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ for SMG with a general potential $V$ and coupling function $A$. The dependence of these…
The nonminimal coupling of the kinetic term to Einstein's tensor helps the implementation of inflationary models due to the gravitationally enhanced friction. We calculate the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters for the scalar--tensor theory of gravity with nonminimally derivative coupling. We find that under experimental constraint from the orbits of millisecond pulsars in our galaxy, the theory deviates from Einstein's general relativity in the order of $10^{-20}$, and the effect of the nonminimal coupling is negligible if we take the scalar field as dynamical dark energy. With the …
n-DBI gravity explicitly breaks Lorentz invariance by the introduction of a unit time-like vector field, thereby giving rise to an extra (scalar) degree of freedom. We look for observational consequences of this mode in two setups. Firstly, we compute the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) expansion of the metric to first post-Newtonian order. Surprisingly, we find that the PPN parameters are exactly the same as in General Relativity (GR), and no preferred-frame effects are produced. In particular this means that n-DBI gravity is consistent with all GR solar system experimental tests. We discus…
It is now established that, contrary to common belief, (electro-)vacuum Brans-Dicke gravity does not reduce to general relativity for large values of the Brans-Dicke coupling $ω$. Since the essence of experimental tests of scalar-tensor gravity consists of providing stringent lower bounds on $ω$, the PPN formalism on which these tests are based could be in jeopardy. We show that, in the linearized approximation used by the PPN formalism, the anomaly in the limit to general relativity disappears. However, it survives to second (and higher) order and in strong gravity. This fact is relevant for …
We investigate the slow-motion and weak-field approximation of the general ghost-free parity-violating (PV) theory of gravity in the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) framework and derive the perturbative field equations, which are modified by the PV terms of this theory. The complete PPN parameters are obtained by solving the perturbative field equations. We find that all the PPN parameters are exactly the same as those in general relativity, except for an extra parameter $κ$, which is caused by the new curl-type term in the gravitomagnetic sector of the metric in this theory. We calculate th…
In this communication, the current tests of gravitation available at Solar System scales are recalled. These tests rely mainly on two frameworks: the PPN framework and the search for a fifth force. Some motivations are given to look for deviations from General Relativity in other frameworks than the two extensively considered. A recent analysis of Cassini data in a MOND framework is presented. Furthermore, possibilities to constrain Standard Model Extension parameters using Solar System data are developed.
We compute the PPN parameters $γ$ and $β$ for general scalar-tensor theories in the Einstein frame, which we compare to the existing PPN formulation in the Jordan frame for alternative theories of gravity. This computation is important for scalar-tensor theories that are expressed in the Einstein frame, such as chameleon and symmetron theories, which can incorporate hiding mechanisms that predict environment-dependent PPN parameters. We introduce a general formalism for scalar-tensor theories and constrain it using the limit on $γ$ given by the Cassini experiment. In particular we discuss mass…
Einstein's theory of general relativity (GR) has been precisely tested on solar system scales, but extragalactic tests are still poorly performed. In this work, we use a newly compiled sample of galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses to test the validity of GR on kiloparsec scales. In order to solve the circularity problem caused by the preassumption of a specific cosmological model based on GR, we employ the distance sum rule in the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker metric to directly estimate the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameter $γ_{\rm PPN}$ and the cosmic curvature $Ω_k$ …
We bring together two popular formalisms which generically parameterise deviations from General Relativity on astrophysical and cosmological scales, namely the parameterised post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism and the effective field theory (EFT) of dark energy and modified gravity. These separate formalisms are successfully applied to independently perform tests of gravity in their respective regimes of applicability on vastly different length scales. Nonlinear screening mechanisms indeed make it imperative to probe General Relativity across a wide range of scales. For a comprehensive interpretati…
In this letter, we show that any solution of general relativity (GR) that can be rendered spatially flat by a coordinate change is also a solution of the self-accelerating branch of the minimal theory of massive gravity (MTMG), with or without matter. We then for the first time obtain black hole and star solutions in a theory of massive gravity that agree with the corresponding solutions in GR and that are free from strong coupling issues. This in particular implies that the parametrized post-Newtonian parameters $β^{\rm PPN}$ and $γ^{\rm PPN}$ are unity, as in GR. We further show how these so…

We look for a graviton-dilaton theory which can predict non trivial values of the PPN parameters $β$ and/or $γ$ for a charge neutral point star, without any naked singularity. With the potential for dilaton $ϕ$ set to zero, it contains one arbitrary function $ψ(ϕ)$. Our requirements impose certain constraints on $ψ$, which lead to the following generic and model independent novel results: For a charge neutral point star, the gravitational force becomes repulsive at distances of the order of, but greater than, the Schwarzschild radius $r_0$. There is also no horizon for $r > r_0$. These results…
The dynamical equivalence between modified and scalar-tensor gravity theories is revisited and it is concluded that it breaks down in the limit to general relativity. A gauge-independent analysis of cosmological perturbations in both classes of theories lends independent support to this conclusion. As a consequence, the PPN formalism of scalar-tensor gravity and Solar System experiments do not veto modified gravity, as previously thought.
We consider general metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity by solving the field equations in the presence of a spherical static mass distribution by analytical perturbative means. Expanding the field equations systematically in $\cO(G)$, we solve the resulting set of equations and show that $f(R)$ theories which attempt to solve the dark energy problem very generally lead to $γ_{PPN}=1/2$ in the solar system. This excludes a large class of theories as possible explanations of dark energy. We also present the first order correction to $γ_{PPN}$ and show that it cannot have a significant effect.
The chameleon mechanism appearing in massive tensor-scalar theory of gravity can effectively reduce the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and matter. This mechanism is invoked to reconcile cosmological data requiring introduction of Dark Energy with small-scale stringent constraints on General Relativity. In this communication, we present constraints on this mechanism obtained by a cosmological analysis (based on Supernovae Ia data) and by a Solar System analysis (based on PPN formalism).
The post-Newtonian (PN) perturbative framework has been successful in understanding the slow-motion, weak field limit of Einstein's theory of gravity on solar system scales, and for isolated astrophysical systems. The parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism extended the PN framework to put very tight constraints on deviations from Einstein's theory on the aforementioned scales and systems. In this work, we extended and applied the post-Newtonian formalism to cosmological scales. We first used it to construct a cosmological model to understand the effect of regularly arranged point sources…
We compute the Post-Newtonian parameter (PPN),$γ$, for scalar-tensor gravity theory when the action functional for the scalar field is a non-standard one, namely the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type action, used in the literature for a tachyon field. We investigate two different cases (Linear and conformal couplings) when the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to gravity via the scalar curvature. We find that the PPN parameter $γ$, which measures the amount of space curvature per unit rest mass, becomes a function of the effective mass of the scalar field. Using this PPN parameter, we calculate…
A stochastic background of relic gravitational waves is achieved by the so called adiabatically-amplified zero-point fluctuations process derived from early inflation. It provides a distinctive spectrum of relic gravitational waves. In the framework of scalar-tensor gravity, we discuss the scalar modes of gravitational waves and the primordial production of this scalar component which is generated beside tensorial one. Then we analyze different viable $f(R)$-gravities towards the Solar System tests and stochastic gravitational waves background. The aim is to achive experimental bounds for the …
We examine the post-Newtonian limit of the minimal exponential measure (MEMe) model presented in [J. C. Feng, S. Carloni, Phys. Rev. D 101, 064002 (2020)] using an extension of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism which is also suitable for other type-I minimally modified Gravity theories. The new PPN expansion is then used to calculate the monopole term of the post-Newtonian gravitational potential and to perform an analysis of circular orbits within spherically symmetric matter distributions. The latter shows that the behavior does not differ significantly from that of general re…
Preferred frame effects (PFEs) are predicted by a number of alternative gravity theories which include vector or additional tensor fields, besides the canonical metric tensor. In the framework of parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, we investigate PFEs in the orbital dynamics of binary pulsars, characterized by the two strong-field PPN parameters, α_1 and α_2. In the limit of a small orbital eccentricity, α_1 and α_2 contributions decouple. By utilizing recent radio timing results and optical observations of PSRs J1012+5307 and J1738+0333, we obtained the best limits of α_1 and α_2 in …
Chameleon mechanism appearing in massive tensor-scalar theory of gravity can effectively reduce locally the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and matter. This mechanism is invoked to reconcile large-scale departures from general relativity (GR), supposedly accounting for cosmic acceleration, to small scales stringent constraints on GR. In this paper, we carefully investigate this framework on cosmological and solar system scales to derive combined constraints on model parameters, notably by performing a non-ambiguous derivation of observables like luminosity distance and local post…
The current effort to test General Relativity employs multiple disparate formalisms for different observables, obscuring the relations between laboratory, astrophysical and cosmological constraints. To remedy this situation, we develop a parameter space for comparing tests of gravity on all scales in the universe. In particular, we present new methods for linking cosmological large-scale structure, the Cosmic Microwave Background and gravitational waves with classic PPN tests of gravity. Diagrams of this gravitational parameter space reveal a noticeable untested regime. The untested window, wh…
We consider a nonminimally coupled curvature-matter gravity theory at the Solar System scale. Both a fifth force of Yukawa type and a further non-Newtonian extra force that arises from the nonminimal coupling are present in the solar interior and in the solar atmosphere up to interplanetary space. The extra force depends on the spatial gradient of space-time curvature R. The conditions under which the effects of such forces can be screened by the chameleon mechanism and be made consistent with Cassini measurement of PPN parameter $γ$ are examined. This consistency analysis requires a specific …
Motivated by the projectable Horava--Lifshitz model/mimetic matter scenario, we consider a particular modification of standard gravity, which manifests as an imperfect low pressure fluid. While practically indistinguishable from a collection of non-relativistic weakly interacting particles on cosmological scales, it leaves drastically different signatures in the Solar system. The main effect stems from gravitational focusing of the flow of Imperfect Dark Matter passing near the Sun. This entails strong amplification of Imperfect Dark Matter energy density compared to its average value in the s…
Within the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, there could be an anisotropy of local gravity induced by an external matter distribution, even for a fully conservative metric theory of gravity. It reflects the breakdown of the local position invariance of gravity and, within the PPN formalism, is characterized by the Whitehead parameter $ξ$. We present three different kinds of observation, from the Solar system and radio pulsars, to constrain it. The most stringent limit comes from recent results on the extremely stable pulse profiles of solitary millisecond pulsars, that gives $|\hat…
We consider stability properties of spherically symmetric spacetimes of stars in metric f(R) gravity. We stress that these not only depend on the particular model, but also on the specific physical configuration. Typically configurations giving the desired $γ_{\rm PPN} \approx 1$ are strongly constrained, while those corresponding to $γ_{\rm PPN} \approx 1/2$ are less affected. Furthermore, even when the former are found strictly stable in time, the domain of acceptable static spherical solutions typically shrinks to a point in the phase space. Unless a physical reason to prefer such a particu…
We calculate the PPN parameters gamma and beta for scalar-tensor gravity with a generic coupling function omega and scalar potential V in the Jordan conformal frame in the case of a static spherically symmetric source. Since the potential generally introduces a radial dependence to the effective gravitational constant as well as to gamma and beta, we discuss the issue of defining these PPN parameters and compare our expressions with previous calculations in simpler cases. We confront our results with current observational constraints on the values of gamma and beta and thus draw restrictions o…
Experiments on the violation of equivalence principle (EP) and solar system give a number of constraints in which any modified gravity model must satisfy them. We study these constraints on a kind of $f(R)$ gravity as $f(R) = R(1\pm ε\ln({R \over R_c}))$. For this investigation we use of chameleon mechanism and show that a spherically body has thin-shell in this model. So that we obtain an effective coupling of the fifth force which is suppressed through a chameleon mechanism. Also, we obtain $γ_{PPN} = 1 \pm 1.13 \times10^{-5}$ which is agreement with experiment results. At last, we show that…
We analytically calculate some orbital effects induced by the Lorentz-invariance/momentum-conservation PPN parameter $α_3$ in a gravitationally bound binary system made of a compact primary orbited by a test particle. We neither restrict ourselves to any particular orbital configuration nor to specific orientations of the primary's spin axis $\boldsymbol{\hatψ}$. We use our results to put preliminary upper bounds on $α_3$ in the weak-field regime by using the latest data from Solar System's planetary dynamics. By linearly combining the supplementary perihelion precessions $Δ\dot\varpi$ of the …
In this paper, we first propose a universal coupling between the gravity and matter in the framework of the Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry for both the projectable and non-projectable cases. Then, using this universal coupling we study the post-Newtonian approximations and obtain the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. Contrary to the previous works in which only two PPN parameters were calculated, we obtain {\it all} PPN parameters. We then, for the first time in either projectable or non-projectable ca…
