We report the Fermi-LAT discovery of high-energy (MeV/GeV) gamma-ray emission positionally consistent with the center of the radio galaxy M87, at a source significance of over 10 sigma in ten-months of all-sky survey data. Following the detections of Cen A and Per A, this makes M87 the third radio galaxy seen with the LAT. The faint point-like gamma-ray source has a >100 MeV flux of 2.45 (+/- 0.63) x 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (photon index = 2.26 +/- 0.13) with no significant variability detected within the LAT observation. This flux is comparable with the previous EGRET upper limit (< 2.18 x 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1, 2 sigma), thus there is no evidence for a significant MeV/GeV flare on decade timescales. Contemporaneous Chandra and VLBA data indicate low activity in the unresolved X-ray and radio core relative to previous observations, suggesting M87 is in a quiescent overall level over the first year of Fermi-LAT observations. The LAT gamma-ray spectrum is modeled as synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission from the electron population producing the radio-to-X-ray emission in the core. The resultant SSC spectrum extrapolates smoothly from the LAT band to the historical-minimum TeV emission. Alternative models for the core and possible contributions from the kiloparsec-scale jet in M87 are considered, and can not be excluded.
We investigate looking for black hole starships using very high energy gamma ray telescopes. We find they would be above the threshhold of visibility although there are many unknown factors.
Gamma rays, electrons and positrons up to 3 TeV with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope
The detection of the high-energy neutrino IC-170922A in spatial (within the error region) and temporal flare activity correlation with the blazar TXS 0506+056 allowed these objects to be considered as progenitor sources of neutrinos. Besides this, no more detection of this kind was reported. Some other neutrinos detected by IceCube show a spatial correlation (within the error region) from other Fermi-LAT detected sources. However, these objects did not show a flare activity like TXS 0506+056. Assuming a lepto-hadronic scenario through p$γ$ interactions, this work describes the SED in some obje…
We report the discovery of gamma-ray detection from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) B0443-6657 using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the \textit{Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}. LMC B0443-6657 is a flat spectrum radio source, possibly associated with a supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC N4). Employing the LAT data of 8 years, our results show a significant excess ($>9.4σ$) of gamma-ray in the range of 0.2--100\,GeV above the gamma-ray background. A power-law function is found to be adequate to describe the $0.2-100$ GeV $γ$-ray spectrum, which yields a photon flux o…
A primordial black hole in the last stages of evaporation and located in the local neighborhood can produce a detectable signal in gamma ray and neutrino telescopes. We re-evaluate the expected gamma ray and neutrino fluxes from these transient point events and discuss the consequences for existing constraints. For gamma rays we improve the current bounds by a factor of few, while for neutrinos we obtain significantly different results than the existing literature. The capability and advantages of neutrino telescopes in the search for primordial black holes is discussed thoroughly. The correla…
Measurement of diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Milky Way with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) is difficult because of high level of charged cosmic ray background and small field-of-view. We show that such a measurement is nevertheless possible in the energy band 10-100 TeV. The minimal charged particle background for IACTs is achieved in event selections used for the analyses of the cosmic ray electrons. Tight cuts on the event quality in these event selections allow to achieve the background level sufficiently low to allow the measurements of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray…
Annihilating dark matter particles in nearby subhalos could generate potentially observable fluxes of gamma rays, unaccompanied by emission at other wavelengths. Furthermore, this gamma-ray emission is expected to be spatially extended, providing us with a powerful way to discriminate dark matter subhalos from other astrophysical gamma-ray sources. Fermi has detected two dark matter subhalo candidates which exhibit a statistically significant degree of spatial extension (3FGL J2212.5+0703 and 3FGL J1924.8-1034). It has been argued that the most likely non-dark matter interpretation of these ob…
Space-based gamma-ray telescopes such as the Fermi Large Area Telescope have used single sided silicon strip detectors to track secondary charged particles produced by primary gamma-rays with high resolution. At the lower energies targeted by keV-MeV telescopes, two dimensional position information within a single detector is required for event reconstruction - especially in the Compton regime. This work describes the development of monolithic CMOS active pixel silicon sensors - AstroPix - as a novel technology for use in future gamma-ray telescopes. Based upon sensors (ATLASPix) designed for …
Ultra-long gamma-ray bursts (ULGRBs) have very atypical durations of more than 2000 seconds. Even if their origins are discussed, the SVOM mission with its soft gamma-ray telescope ECLAIRs could detect ULGRBs and increase the sample of the few which have been detected so far by the Burst Alert Telescope aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and some other instruments. In this paper, after a short description of the SVOM mission, we present methods developed to clean detector images from non-flat background and known source contributions in the onboard imaging process. We present an estimat…
The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the Small Size Telescopes (SSTs) proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) aimed at the 1 TeV to 300 TeV energy range. GCT will be equipped with a Compact High-Energy Camera (CHEC) containing 2048 pixels of physical size about 6$\times$6~mm$^2$, leading to a field of view of over 8 degrees. Electronics based on custom TARGET ASICs and FPGAs sample incoming signals at a gigasample per second and provide a flexible triggering scheme. Waveforms for every pixel in every event are read out are on demand without loss at over 600 events per sec…
An advanced Compton telescope appears to be the best instrument concept for the next generation gamma-ray space observatory in the MeV range. A first prototype of advanced Compton telescope is being developed to match the constraints of a nano satellite mission, with the scientific objective of measuring gamma-ray burst prompt emission polarization. Our instrumental developments for this project are focusing on the position-sensitive calorimeter module, made of a monolithic inorganic CeBr$_3$ scintillator read by a pixelated photodetector. 3D position reconstruction is obtained by deep-learnin…
Detection of LS I +61 303 in a low VHE gamma-ray emission state with the MAGIC telescopes
We discuss the discovery potential of extended very-high-energy (VHE) neutrino sources by the future KM3 Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT) in the context of the constraining power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), designed for deep surveys of the sky in VHE gamma rays. The study is based on a comparative analysis of sensitivities of KM3NeT and CTA. We show that a minimum gamma-ray energy flux of E^2ϕ_γ(10 TeV) > 1x10^{-12} TeV cm^{-2} s^{-1} is required to identify a possible neutrino counterpart with a 3σ significance and 10 years of KM3NeT observations with upgoing muons, if the source has a…
In this paper we have introduced a novel method for gamma hadron separation in Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) using Quantum Machine Learning. IACTs captures images of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced from very high energy gamma rays. We have used the QML Algorithms, Quantum Support Vector Classifier (QSVC) and Variational Quantum Classifier (VQC) for binary classification of the events into signals (Gamma) and background(hadron) using the image parameters. MAGIC Gamma Telescope dataset is used for this study which was generated from Monte Carlo Software Coriska. These quan…
Several observations are revealing the widespread occurrence of mildly relativistic wide-angle AGN winds strongly interacting with the gas of their host galaxy. Such winds are potential cosmic-ray accelerators, as supported by gamma-ray observations of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 with the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope. The non-thermal emission produced by relativistic particles accelerated by the AGN-driven wind observed in the circum-nuclear molecular disk of such galaxy is invoked to produce the gamma-ray spectrum. The AGN wind model predicts a hard spectrum that extend in the very …
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with its main instrument on-board, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), opened a new era in the study of high-energy emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). When combined with contemporaneous ground- and space-based observations, Fermi-LAT achieves its full capability to characterize the jet structure and the emission mechanisms at work in radio-loud AGN with different black hole mass and accretion rate, from flat spectrum radio quasars to narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies. Here, I discuss important findings regarding the blazar population included in th…
