Self-Induced Decay of Intense Laser Pulse into a Pair of Surface Plasmons

We show theoretically that an intense femtosecond optical pulse incident normally on a metal surface tends to decay into a pair of counter-propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs). The interference field heats the medium periodically, which causes a periodic permittivity perturbation and resonantly amplifies the magnitudes of SPPs. The instability growth time is only 10-50 fs for typical metals at damaging laser fluences. This mechanism is promising for the interpretation of laser-induced periodic surface structures formation in a single-pulse pumping regime.

Evidence of "Two Plasmon" decay of energetic particle induced geodesic acoustic mode

Secondary low frequency mode generation by energetic particle induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) observed in LHD experiment is studied using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that the EGAM frequency can be significantly higher than local geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) frequency in low collisionality plasmas, and it can decay into two GAMs as its frequency approaches twice GAM frequency, in a process analogous to the well-known two plasmon decay instability. The condition for this process to occur is also discussed.

Sub-lambda gratings, surface plasmons, hotter electrons and brighter x-ray sources- enhanced absorption of intense, ultrashort laser light by tiny surface modulations

We observe near 100 % absorption of light in intense ultrashort laser plasma interaction in a metal coated (Au on glass) sub-lambda grating structure under suitable conditions and the subsequent 'hot' electron generation from the grating plasma. In the low intensity regime we determine the conditions in which a monochromatic infrared light (lambda = 800nm corresponding to the central wavelength of the ultrashort laser that we used in subsequent experiments) efficiently excites surface plasmon in the grating. Landau damping of electron-acoustic waves due to multi-plasmon resonances

The linear and nonlinear theories of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are studied in a partially degenerate quantum plasma with two-temperature electrons and stationary ions. The initial equilibrium of electrons is assumed to be given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution at finite temperature. Hybrid Stimulated Raman Scattering -- Two Plasmon Decay Instability and 3/2 Harmonic in Steep-Gradient Femtosecond Plasmas

The interaction of ultra-intense lasers with solid foils can be used to accelerate ions to high energies well exceeding 60 MeV. The non-linear relativistic motion of electrons in the intense laser radiation leads to their acceleration and later to the acceleration of ions. Dust acoustic wave in a strongly magnetized pair-dust plasma

The existence of the dust acoustic wave (DAW) in a strongly magnetized electron-positron (pair)-dust plasma is demonstrated. In the DAW, the restoring force comes from the pressure of inertialess electrons and positrons, and the dust mass provides the inertia. The waves could be of interest in astrophysical settings such as the supernovae and pulsars, as well as in cluster explosions by intense laser beams in laboratory plasmas.
