We investigate the effects of the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field dark energy (quintessence) and the dark matter on the two- point correlation function. It is well known that this coupling shifts the turnover scale as well as suppresses the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. However, these effects are too small to be observed when we limit the coupling strength to be consistent with observations. Since the coupling of quintessence to baryons is strongly constrained, species dependent coupling may arise. This results in a baryon bias that is dif- ferent from unity. Thus, we look over the correlation function in this coupled model. We find that even the non-coupled quintessence model gives the better fit to the correlation function compared to the cosmo- logical constant model. We are also able to observe the enhancement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak due to the increasing bias factor of baryon from this species dependent coupling. In order to avoid the damping effect of the BAO signature in the matter power spectrum due to nonlinear clustering, we consider the coupling effect on the BAO bump in the linear regime. This provides an alternative method to constrain the coupling of dark energy to dark matter.
This paper uses the beta function formalism to extend the analysis of quintessence cosmological parameters to the logarithmic and exponential dark energy potentials. The previous paper (Thompson 2018) demonstrated the formalism using power and inverse power potentials. The essentially identical evolution of the Hubble parameter for all of the quintessence cases and LambdaCDM is attributed to the flatness of the quintessence dark energy potentials in the dark energy dominated era. The Hubble parameter is therefore incapable of discriminating between static and dynamic dark energy. Unlike the ot…
We explore unification of dark matter and dark energy in a theory containing a scalar field of non-Lagrangian type, obtained by direct insertion of a kinetic term into the energy-momentum tensor. This scalar is different from quintessence, having an equation of state between -1 and 0 and a zero sound speed in its rest frame. We solve the equations of motion for an exponential potential via a rewriting as an autonomous system, and demonstrate the observational viability of the scenario, for sufficiently small exponential potential parameter λ, by comparison to a compilation of kinematical cosmo…
In this paper, we analyze the dynamical evolution of quintessence dark energy induced by the collapse of dark matter halos. Different from other previous studies, we develop a numerical strategy which allows us to calculate the dark energy evolution for the entire history of the spherical collapse of dark matter halos, without the need of separate treatments for linear, quasi-linear and nonlinear stages of the halo formation. It is found that the dark energy perturbations evolve with redshifts, and their specific behaviors depend on the quintessence potential as well as the collapsing process.…
We baseline with current cosmological observations to forecast the power of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in two ways: 1. the gain in constraining power of parameter combinations in the standard $Λ$CDM model, and 2. the reconstruction of quintessence models of dark energy. For the former task we use a recently developed formalism to extract the leading parameter combinations constrained by different combinations of cosmological survey data. For the latter, we perform a non-parametric reconstruction of quintessence using the Effective Field Theory of Dark Energy. Using mock DE…
We study the cosmology of a quintessence scalar field which is equivalent to a non-barotropic perfect fluid of constant pressure. The coincidence problem is alleviated by such a quintessence equation-of-state that interpolates between plateau of zero at large redshifts and plateau of minus one as the redshift approaches to zero. The quintessence field is neither a unified dark matter nor a mixture of cosmological constant and cold dark matter, because the quintessence density contrasts decay monotonously on sub-horizon scales and the squared sound speeds of quintessence perturbations do not va…
We reported results of our study on non-linear spherical perturbations in quintessence models of dark energy. In the process of some follow up studies we discovered that a scaling factor in the code used for numerical calculations that should have been set to unity was set to a large value. Thus the scale of perturbations was much larger than intended, and for the larger scales the amplitude of dark matter perturbations was much higher than realistic. We provide corrected results here in this erratum. We find that there is no change in the perturbations for dark matter. The amplitude of pertur…
Dynamical models for dark energy are an alternative to the cosmological constant. It is important to investigate properties of perturbations in these models and go beyond the smooth FRLW cosmology. This allows us to distinguish different dark energy models with the same expansion history. For this, one often needs the potential for a particular expansion history. We study how such potentials can be reconstructed obtaining closed formulae for potential or reducing the problem to quadrature. We consider three classes of models here: tachyons, quintessence, and, interacting dark energy. We presen…
Growing neutrino quintessence addresses the "why now" problem of dark energy by assuming that the neutrinos are coupled to the dark energy scalar field. The coupling mediates an attractive force between the neutrinos leading to the formation of large neutrino lumps. This work proposes an effective, simplified description of the subsequent cosmological dynamics. We treat neutrino lumps as effective particles and investigate their properties and mutual interactions. The neutrino lump fluid behaves as cold dark matter coupled to dark energy. The methods developed here may find wider applications …
We analyze the possibility to distinguish between quintessence and phantom scalar field models of dark energy using observations of luminosity distance moduli of SNe Ia, CMB anisotropies and polarization, matter density perturbations and baryon acoustic oscillations. Among the present observations only Planck data on CMB anisotropy and SDSS DR9 data on baryon acoustic oscillations may be able to decide between quintessence or phantom scalar field models, however for each model a set of best-fit parameters exists, which matches all data with similar goodness of fit. We compare the relative diff…
The archetypal theory of dark energy is quintessence: a minimally coupled scalar field with a canonical kinetic energy and potential. By studying random potentials we show that quintessence imposes a restricted set of priors on the equation of state of dark energy. Focusing on the commonly-used parametrisation, $w(a)\approx w_0+w_a(1-a)$, we show that there is a natural scale and direction in the $(w_0, w_a)$ plane that distinguishes quintessence as a general framework. We calculate the expected information gain for a given survey and show that, because of the non-trivial prior information, it…
The recent GW170817 measurement favors the simplest dark energy models, such as a single scalar field. Quintessence models can be classified in two classes, freezing and thawing, depending on whether the equation of state decreases towards $-1$ or departs from it. In this paper we put observational constraints on the parameters governing the equations of state of tracking freezing, scaling freezing and thawing models using updated data, from the Planck 2015 release, joint light-curve analysis and baryonic acoustic oscillations. Because of the current tensions on the value of the Hubble paramet…
Current cosmological data puts increasing pressure on models of dark energy in the freezing class, e.g. early dark energy or those with equation of state $w$ substantially different from $-1$. We investigate to what extent data will distinguish the thawing class of quintessence from a cosmological constant. Since thawing dark energy deviates from $w=-1$ only at late times, we find that deviations $1+w\lesssim0.1$ are difficult to see even with next generation measurements; however, modest redshift drift data can improve the sensitivity by a factor of two. Furthermore, technical naturalness pre…
Scalar fields aptly describe equation of state of dark energy. The scalar field models were initially proposed to circumvent the fine tuning problem of cosmological constant. However, the model parameters also need a fine tuning of their own and it is important to use different observations to determine these parameters. In this paper, we use a combination of low redshift data to constrain the low redshift evolution of canonical scalar field parameters. For this analysis, we use the Supernova Type Ia observations, the Baryon Acoustic Observations and the Hubble parameter measurement data. We c…
We study a coupled quintessence model in which the interaction with the dark matter sector is a function of the quintessence potential. Such a coupling can arise from a field dependent mass term for the dark matter field. The dynamical analysis of a standard quintessence potential coupled with the interaction explored here shows that the system possesses a late time accelerated attractor. In light of these results, we perform a fit to the most recent Supernovae Ia, Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data sets. Constraints arising from weak equivalence principle violati…
Quintessence can cluster only on horizon scales. What is the effect on the observed matter distribution? To answer this, we need a relativistic approach that goes beyond the standard Newtonian calculation and deals properly with large scales. Such an approach has recently been developed for the case when dark energy is vacuum energy, which does not cluster at all. We extend this relativistic analysis to deal with dynamical dark energy. Using three quintessence potentials as examples, we compute the angular power spectrum for the case of an HI intensity map survey. Compared to the concordance m…
I present the numerical solution of equations of the evolution of a universe containing background fluids (radiation, dark matter and baryonic matter), plus a scalar matter field with a hybrid potential that is a combination of exponential potential and power-law potential. The plot of the evolution of density parameters is compatible with our universe; and today's values of density parameters of dark energy, dark matter, baryonic matter, and Hubble parameter, and the age and size of our universe, found from this model, are very close to (and some times the same as) measured values.
We study the $z=0$ properties of clusters (and large groups) of galaxies within the context of interacting and non-interacting quintessence cosmological models, using a series of adiabatic SPH simulations. Initially, we examine the average properties of groups and clusters, quantifying their differences in LCDM, uncoupled Dark Energy (\ude) and coupled Dark Energy (\cde) cosmologies. In particular, we focus upon radial profiles of the gas density, temperature and pressure, and we also investigate how the standard hydrodynamic equilibrium hypothesis holds in quintessence cosmologies. While we a…
We discuss the electroweak quintessence axion as a candidate for dark energy, taking into account observational as well as quantum-gravity constraints.
We model the nonlinear growth of cosmic structure in different dark energy models, using large volume N-body simulations. We consider a range of quintessence models which feature both rapidly and slowly varying dark energy equations of state, and compare the growth of structure to that in a universe with a cosmological constant. The adoption of a quintessence model changes the expansion history of the universe, the form of the linear theory power spectrum and can alter key observables, such as the horizon scale and the distance to last scattering. The difference in structure formation can be e…
With a parametric form of the equation of state parameter of dark energy, a quintessence potential has been reconstructed. The potential is found to be a generalization of a double exponential potential. The constraints on the parameters are obtained by maximum likelihood analysis using observational Hubble data, type Ia supernova data, baryon acoustic oscillation data and the CMB shift parameter data. Th emodel shows preference towards the phantom behaviour of dark energy.
We consider a system where dark matter dynamics is enriched by the presence of clustering quintessence in the approximation where the system is effectively reduced to one degree of freedom. We study the corresponding observables up to one-loop order and then point out similarities between the power spectrum of the reduced system and the behaviour of non-equal time pure dark matter correlators. We then focus on the one-loop total density power spectrum in the IR limit as a diagnostic tool for consistency relations breaking. Unlike the non-equal time case, the reduced system does still obey cons…
We present a detailed and pedagogical analysis of recent cosmological data, including CMB, BAO, SnIa and the recent local measurement of $H_0$. We thus obtain constraints on the parameters of standard dark energy parameterizations, including $ΛCDM$, and $H(z)$ deformation models such as $wCDM$ (constant equation of state $w$ of dark energy), and the CPL model (corresponding to the evolving dark energy equation-of-state parameter $w(z) = w_0 + w_a \frac{z}{1+z}$). The fitted parameters include the dark matter density $Ω_{0m}$, the SnIa absolute magnitude $M$, the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the d…
Despite its dominance in the present universe's energy budget, dark energy is the least understood component in the universe. Although there is a popular model for the dynamical dark energy, the quintessence scalar, the investigation is limited because of its highly elusive character. We present a model where the quintessence is gauged by an Abelian gauge symmetry. The quintessence is promoted to be a complex scalar whose real part is the dark energy field while the imaginary part is the longitudinal component of a new gauge boson. It brings interesting characters to dark energy physics. We st…

The 21cm line probes the evolution of matter perturbations over a wide range of redshifts, from the dark ages down to the completion of reionization. Observing the 21cm cosmological signal will extend our understanding of the evolution of the Universe and it is thus important to investigate the predictions of different cosmological models. In this paper we focus on the prospect of constraining coupled quintessence models during the Epoch of Reionization both for global signal experiments and for intensity mapping surveys. To derive the all-sky 21cm signal and fluctuations in coupled quintessen…
A dependence of the neutrino masses on the dark energy scalar field could provide a solution to the why now problem of dark energy. The dynamics of the resulting cosmological model, growing neutrino quintessence, include an attractive force between neutrinos substantially stronger than gravity. We present a comprehensive approach towards an understanding of the full cosmological evolution including the formation of large-scale neutrino structures. Important effects we account for are local variations in the dark energy and the backreaction on the background evolution, as well as relativistic n…
In this work we propose a simple general parametrization scheme of the Hubble parameter for the scalar field dark energy models. In our approach it is possible to incorporate both the quintessence and phantom scalar field in a single analytical scheme and write down relevant cosmological parameters which are independent of the nature of the scalar field. A general condition for the phantom barrier crossing has also been obtained. To test this approach, a well behaved parametrization of the normalized Hubble parameter has been considered and a wide variety of observational data like CMB data, S…
In a recent paper by C. Gao, M. Kunz, A. Liddle and D. Parkinson [arXiv:0912.0949], the unification of dark matter and dark energy was explored within a theory containing a scalar field of non-Lagrangian type. This scalar field, different from the classic quintessence, can be obtained from the scalar field representation of an interacting two-fluid mixture described in the paper by L.P. Chimento and M. Forte [arXiv:0706.4142]
We introduce a new form of coupling between dark energy and dark matter that is quadratic in their energy densities. Then we investigate the background dynamics when dark energy is in the form of exponential quintessence. The three types of quadratic coupling all admit late-time accelerating critical points, but these are not scaling solutions. We also show that two types of coupling allow for a suitable matter era at early times and acceleration at late times, while the third type of coupling does not admit a suitable matter era.
We study evolution of perturbations in dark matter and dark energy for spherical collapse. We study Tachyon models of dark energy using the approach outlined in Rajvanshi and Bagla (2018). We work with models that are allowed by current observations. We find that as with Quintessence models allowed by observations, dark energy perturbations do not affect evolution of perturbations in dark matter in a significant manner. Perturbations in dark energy remain small for such models. In order to compare different classes of dark energy models, we use reconstruction of potentials and study dark matte…
The self-gravitating gas in the Newtonian limit is studied in the presence of dark energy with a linear and constant equation of state. Entropy extremization associates to the isothermal Boltzmann distribution an effective density that includes `dark energy particles', which either strengthen or weaken mutual gravitational attraction, in case of quintessence or phantom dark energy, respectively, that satisfy a linear equation of state. Stability is studied for microcanonical (fixed energy) and canonical (fixed temperature) ensembles. Compared to the previously studied cosmological constant cas…
In this paper, we investigate the Noether symmetries of $F(T)$ cosmology involving matter and dark energy. In this model, the dark energy is represented by a canonical scalar field with a potential. Two special cases for dark energy are considered including phantom energy and quintessence. We obtain $F(T)\sim T^{3/4},$ and the scalar potential $V(ϕ)\simϕ^2$ for both models of dark energy and discuss quantum picture of this model. Some astrophysical implications are also discussed.
We consider ideal fluid and equivalent scalar field dark energy universes where all four known types of finite-time, future singularities occur at some parameter values. It is demonstrated that pressure/energy density of such quintessence/phantom dark energy diverges in spherically-symmetric spacetime at finite radius or at the center. This may cause the instability of the relativistic star or black hole in such universe. The resolution of the problem via the extra modification of the equation of state is briefly discussed.
Using cosmic voids to probe the growth rate of cosmic structure, and hence the nature of dark energy, is particularly interesting in the context of modified gravity theories that rely on the screening mechanism. In this work we improve the modelling of redshift-space distortions around voids in the dark matter density field, and thus reduce systematic errors in the derivation of cosmological parameters. We also show how specific types of voids can be used to better probe the growth rate, using a flexible void finder. We apply our results to test for a quintessence type of dark energy vs. a LCD…
We present a novel dark energy candidate, based upon the existence and dynamics of Ghost D-branes in a warped compactification of type IIB string theory. Gp-branes cancel the combined BPS sectors of the Dp-branes, while they preserve the same supersymmetries. We show that this scenario can naturally lead to either quintessence or phantom-like behaviors, depending on the form of the involved potentials and brane tension.
We propose a postulate $\dot{q} =MH$ concerning temporal variation of quintessence field $q$ where $H$ is Hubble parameter ($=\dot{a}/a$) and $M$ is the scale characterizing the field. Using the postulate we uniquely determines a dynamical model of the field. The potential of the field satisfies the tracking condition. The minimum of the total energy density of matter and the field is located at $a=\infty$. We show that the present tiny dark energy is caused by early inflation, while the energy is comparable to Planck scale before the inflation. Since the model is reduced to $Λ$CDM model in th…
A model consisting of quintessence scalar field interacting with cold dark matter is considered. Conditions required to reach $w_d=-1$ are discussed. It is shown that depending on the potential considered for the quintessence, reaching the phantom divide line puts some constraints on the interaction between dark energy and dark matter. This also may determine the ratio of dark matter to dark energy density at $w_d=-1$.
We study the dynamical properties of tracker quintessence models using a general parametrization of their corresponding potentials, and show that there is a general condition for the appearance of a tracker behavior at early times. Likewise, we determine the conditions under which the quintessence tracker models can also provide an accelerating expansion of the universe with an equation of state closer to $-1$. Apart from the analysis of the background dynamics, we also include linear density perturbations of the quintessence field in a consistent manner and using the same parametrization of t…
We study the spherical collapse model in the presence of quintessence with negligible speed of sound. This case is particularly motivated for w<-1 as it is required by stability. As pressure gradients are negligible, quintessence follows dark matter during the collapse. The spherical overdensity behaves as a separate closed FLRW universe, so that its evolution can be studied exactly. We derive the critical overdensity for collapse and we use the extended Press-Schechter theory to study how the clustering of quintessence affects the dark matter mass function. The effect is dominated by the modi…
We study the generation of a kination-dominated phase in the context of a quintessential model with an inverse-power-law potential and a Hubble-induced mass term for the quintessence field. The presence of kination is associated with an oscillating evolution of the quintessence field and the barotropic index. We find that, in sizeable regions of the parameter space, a tracker scaling solution can be reached sufficiently early to alleviate the coincidence problem. Other observational constraints originating from nucleosynthesis, the inflationary scale, the present acceleration of the universe a…
We analyze the coupled quintessence in the light of the linear dynamical systems theory, with two different interactions: i) proportional to the energy density of the dark energy and ii) proportional to the sum of the energy densities of the dark matter and dark energy. The results presented here enlarge the previous analyses in the literature, wherein the interaction has been only proportional to the energy density of the dark matter. In the first case it is possible to get the well-known sequence of cosmological eras. For the second interaction only the radiation and the dark energy era can …
We use linear perturbation theory to study perturbations in dynamical dark energy models. We compare quintessence and tachyonic dark energy models with identical background evolution. We write the corresponding equations for different models in a form that makes it easier to see that the two models are very hard to distinguish in the linear regime, especially for models with $(1 + w) \ll 1$. We use Cosmic Microwave Background data and parametric representations for the two models to illustrate that they cannot be distinguished for the same background evolution with existing observations. Furth…
In standard cosmologies, dark energy interacts only gravitationally with dark matter. An extension to this picture is interacting quintessence (IQ) model, where scalar field coupled directly to cold dark matter. The percentage deviation is studied in IQ model wrt $Λ$CDM for varied values of interacting parameter W. We investigated the effect of interaction on matter, Kaiser and galaxy power spectrums. Deviation in power spectrum increases with interaction on both large and small scales. On small scale, variation is comparatively smaller than on large scale. On large scale, it is due to dark en…
Extended quintessence is obtained by coupling a normal scalar field to the Ricci scalar defined in the metric formalism. In this paper, we propose a new extended quintessence dark energy by introducing a non-minimal coupling between the quintessence and gravity, but with the Ricci scalar given from the Palatini formalism rather than the metric one. We find that the equation of state of the new extended quintessence can cross the phantom divide line, and moreover, it oscillates around the -1 line. We also show that the universe driven by the new extended quintessence will enter a dark energy do…
The string inspired tachyon field can serve as a candidate of dark energy. Its equation of state parameter $w$ varies from 0 to -1. In case of tachyon field potential $V(ϕ)\to 0$ slower(faster) than $1/ϕ^2$ at infinity, dark energy(dark matter) is a late time attractor. We investigate the tachyon dark energy models under the assumption that $w$ is close to -1. We find that all the models exhibit unique behavior around the present epoch which is exactly same as that of the thawing quintessence.
In the present work, motivated by the work of Cai and Su [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 81}, 103514 (2010)], we propose a new type of interaction in dark sector, which can change its sign when our universe changes from deceleration to acceleration. We consider the cosmological evolution of quintessence and phantom with this type of interaction, and find that there are some scaling attractors which can help to alleviate the cosmological coincidence problem. Our results also show that this new type of interaction can bring new features to cosmology.
We discuss some cosmological consequences of a general model of coupled quintessence in which the phenomenological coupling between the cold dark matter and dark energy is a function of the cosmic scale factor $ε(a)$. This class of models presents cosmological solutions in which the Universe is currently dominated by an exotic component, but will eventually be dominated by cold dark matter in the future. This dynamical behavior is considerably different from the standard $Λ$CDM evolution, and may alleviate some conflicts in reconciling the idea of the dark energy-dominated universe with observ…
We present a model in which the question about a nature of the dark energy and the recently raised Hubble tension can be addressed at once. We consider the electroweak axion in the minimal supersymmetric standard model where the axion energy density is identified with the observed dark energy. Along with this, imposing a gauged $Z_{10}$ symmetry makes it possible to have a gravitino dark matter whose mass amounts to $\sim\mathcal{O}(1)\,\,{\rm GeV}$. We find that the gravitino with mass $\sim\mathcal{O}(1)\,\,{\rm GeV}$ can be a good candidate of a decaying dark matter of which decay after rec…
We investigate the dark matter annihilation in the brane-world and quintessence scenarios, in which the modified cosmological expansion rate can enhance the thermal relic density of dark matter. According to the observed dark matter abundance, we constrain the thermally averaged annihilation cross section <σv> in these two scenarios. In addition, the big bang nucleosynthesis and the partial-wave unitarity are also used to place bounds on <σv>. It is found that both scenarios can lead to a large annihilation cross section, so they can be used to explain the recent PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS anom…
Over the last few years the $R_{\mathrm{h}}=ct$ universe has received a lot of attention, particularly when observational evidence seems to favor this over the standard $Λ$ cold dark matter ($ΛCDM$) universe. Like the $ΛCDM$, the $R_{\mathrm{h}}=ct$ universe is based on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology where the total energy density $ρ$ and pressure $p$ of the cosmic fluid contain a dark energy component besides the usual (dark and baryonic) matter and radiation components. However unlike the $ΛCDM$ this model has the simple equation of state (EOS) $ρ+ 3p = 0$, i.e., its total acti…
The origin of the neutrino mass, dark matter (DM), and dark energy (DE) are among the most challenging problems of fundamental physics. We address these questions from analyses of the models where the neutrino mass is generated via Yukawa coupling to the quintessence field which represents the DE. It has been shown in a recent work on the toy model with a single Dirac fermion coupled to the quintessence that by choosing parameters of the DE potential to match the present DE density, the model allows to lock the neutrino mass at m ~0.01 eV and yields consistent estimates for other parameters of…
