A generalized canonical form of multi-time dynamical theories is proposed. This form is a starting point for a modified canonical quantization procedure of theories based on a quantum version of the action principle. As an example, the Fokker theory of a direct electromagnetic interaction of charges is considered.
Canonical quantization of electromagnetic field is traditionally done using plane waves. It is possible to formulate the quantization using other complete set of basis functions. Wavelets are a special kind of functions which are localized in real as well as in Fourier space. In this paper we show how wavelets can be used as basis functions in canonical quantization. A countable set of mode functions are obtained. The general formalism of the change of basis is the same for all wavelets which satisfy a multiresolution analysis.
The theories defined by Lagrangians containing second time derivative are considered. It is shown that if the second derivatives enter only the terms multiplied by coupling constant one can consistently define the perturbative sector via Dirac procedure. The possibility of introducing standard canonical variables is analysed in detail. The ambiguities in quantization procedure are pointed out.
By introducing a suitable Lagrangian, a canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field in the presence of a non-dispersive bi-anisotropic inhomogeneous magnetodielectric medium is investigated. A tensor projection operator is defined and the commutation relation between the vector potential and its canonically conjugate variable is written in terms of the projection operator. The quantization method is generalized in the presence of the atomic systems. The spontaneous emission of a two-level atom located in a non-dispersive anisotropic megnetodielectric medium is studied.
Based on Lorentz invariance and Born reciprocity invariance, the canonical quantization of Special Relativity (SR) is shown to provide a unified origin for: i) the complex vector space formulation of Quantum Mechanics (QM); ii) the momentum and space commutation relations and the corresponding representations; iii) the Dirac Hamiltonian in the formulation of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics (RQM); iv) the existence of a self adjoint Time Operator that circumvents Pauli's objection.
A bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium is modeled by two independent set of three dimensional harmonic oscillators .A fully canonical quantization of electromagnetic field is demonstrated in the presence of a bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium. The electric and magnetic polarization fields of the medium are obtained in terms of the dynamical variable modeling the medium. The Heisenberg equations of the system are solved for a multilayer bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium.
A canonical quantization scheme is represented for a quantum system interacting with a nonlinear absorbing environment. The environment is taken anisotropic and the main system is coupled to its environment through some coupling tensors of various ranks. The nonlinear response equation of the environment against the motion of the main system is obtained. The nonlinear Langevin-schrödinger equation is concluded as the macroscopic equation of motion of the dissipative system. The effect of nonlinearity of the environment is investigated on the spontaneous emission of an initially excited two lev…
We present a formalism for which a dissipative system is given by a variational principle. The formalism applies to dynamical systems where its trajectory is monotonic. Subsequently, we derive its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. From the Hamiltonian, we quantize canonically the classical particle in a viscous media. We study the free quantum particle in a viscous media and the dissipative quantum tunnelling. It is found that the dissipation influences tunnelling probability by a factor that closely resembles the result of Caldeira and Leggett.
The quantization of plasmons has been analyzed mostly under the assumption of an infinite-sized bulk medium interacting with the electromagnetic field. We reformulate it for finite-size media, such as metallic or dielectric nano-structures, highlighting sharp differences. By diagonalizing the Hamiltonian by means of a Lippmann-Schwinger equation, we show the contribution of two sets of bosonic operators, one stemming from medium fluctuations, and one from the electromagnetic field. The results apply to general models including dissipative and dispersive responses.
We present a new math-physics modeling approach, called canonical quantization with numerical mode-decomposition, for capturing the physics of how incoming photons interact with finite-sized dispersive media, which is not describable by the previous Fano-diagonalization methods. The main procedure is to (1) study a system where electromagnetic (EM) fields are coupled to non-uniformly distributed Lorentz oscillators in Hamiltonian mechanics, (2) derive a generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problem for conjugate pairs in coordinate space, (3) apply computational electromagnetics methods to find a c…
An ad hoc quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in a weakly dispersive, transparent dielectric leads to the definition of canonical and kinetic forms for the momentum of the electromagnetic field in a dispersive medium. The canonical momentum is uniquely defined as the operator that generates spatial translations in a uniform medium, but the quantization scheme suggests two possible choices for the kinetic momentum operator, corresponding to the Abraham or the Minkowski momentum in classical electrodynamics. Another implication of this procedure is that a wave packet containing a s…
Modeling a nonlinear anisotropic magnetodielectric medium with spatial-temporal dispersion by two continuum collections of three dimensional harmonic oscillators, a fully canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field is demonstrated in the presence of such a medium. Some coupling tensors of various ranks are introduced that couple the magnetodielectric medium with the electromagnetic field. The polarization and magnetization fields of the medium are defined in terms of the coupling tensors and the oscillators modeling the medium. The electric and magnetic susceptibility tensors of the me…
Modeling an anisotropic spatially and temporarily dispersive magnetodielectric medium by two independent collections of three dimensional vector fields, we demonstrate a fully canonical quantization of electromagnetic field in the presence of such a medium. Two tensor fields which couple the electromagnetic field with the medium and have an important role in this quantization method are introduced. The electric and magnetic polarization fields of the medium naturally are concluded in terms of the coupling tensors and the dynamical variables modeling the magnetodielectric medium. In Heisenberg …
Canonical quantization (CQ) is built around $[Q,P]=i\hbar1\!\!1$, while affine quantization (AQ) is built around $[Q,D]=i\hbar\,Q$, where $D\equiv(PQ+QP)/2$. The basic CQ operators must fit $-\infty< P, Q <\infty$, while the basic AQ operators can fit $-\infty<P<\infty$ and $ 0<Q<\infty$, $-\infty <Q<0$, or even $-\infty<Q\neq0<\infty$. AQ can also be the key to quantum gravity, as our simple outline demonstrates.
We present a systematic canonical quantization procedure for lumped-element superconducting networks by making use of a redundant configuration-space description. The algorithm is based on an original, explicit, and constructive implementation of the symplectic diagonalization of positive semidefinite Hamiltonian matrices, a particular instance of Williamson's theorem. With it, we derive canonically quantized discrete-variable descriptions of passive causal systems. We exemplify the algorithm with representative singular electrical networks, a nonreciprocal extension for the black-box quantiza…
Application of the standard canonical quantization rules of quantum field theory to macroscopic electromagnetism has encountered obstacles due to material dispersion and absorption. This has led to a phenomenological approach to macroscopic quantum electrodynamics where no canonical formulation is attempted. In this paper macroscopic electromagnetism is canonically quantized. The results apply to any linear, inhomogeneous, magnetodielectric medium with dielectric functions that obey the Kramers-Kronig relations. The prescriptions of the phenomenological approach are derived from the canonical …
Following Dirac, the rules of canonical quantization include classical and quantum contact transformations of classical and quantum phase space variables. While arbitrary classical canonical coordinate transformations exist that is not the case for some analogous quantum canonical coordinate transformations. This failure is due to the rigid connection of quantum variables arising by promoting the corresponding classical variable from a $c$-number to a $q$-number. A different relationship of $c$-numbers and $q$-numbers in the procedures of Enhanced Quantization shows the compatibility of all qu…
The process of canonical quantization is redefined so that the classical and quantum theories coexist when \hbar>0, just as they do in the real world. This analysis not only supports conventional procedures, it also reveals new quantization procedures that, among several examples, permit nontrivial quantization of scalar field models such as ϕ^4_n, for every spacetime dimension n\ge2.
We address a conceptual issue of reconciling the traditional canonical quantization framework of quantum theory with the spatially restricted quantum dynamics and the related spectral problems for confined and global observables of the quantum system.
We provide a new canonical approach for studying the quantum mechanical damped harmonic oscillator based on the doubling of degrees of freedom approach. Explicit expressions for Lagrangians of the elementary modes of the problem, characterising both forward and backward time propagations are given. A Hamiltonian analysis, showing the equivalence with the Lagrangian approach, is also done. Based on this Hamiltonian analysis, the quantization of the model is discussed.
In the paper is presented an invariant quantization procedure of classical mechanics on the phase space over flat configuration space. Then, the passage to an operator representation of quantum mechanics in a Hilbert space over configuration space is derived. An explicit form of position and momentum operators as well as their appropriate ordering in arbitrary curvilinear coordinates is demonstrated. Finally, the extension of presented formalism onto non-flat case and related ambiguities of the process of quantization are discussed.
An elementary presentation of the methods for the canonical quantization of constraint systems with Fermi variables is given. The emphasis is on the subtleties of the construction of an appropriate classical bracket that could be consistently replaced by commutators or anti--commutators of operators, as required by canonical quantization procedure for bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom respectively. I present a consequent canonical quantization of the Dirac field, in which the role of Poincaré invariance is made marginal. This simple example provides an introduction to the Poincaré--free…
We present an approach to the canonical quantization of systems with equations of motion that are historically called non-Lagrangian equations. Our viewpoint of this problem is the following: despite the fact that a set of differential equations cannot be directly identified with a set of Euler-Lagrange equations, one can reformulate such a set in an equivalent first-order form which can always be treated as the Euler-Lagrange equations of a certain action. We construct such an action explicitly. It turns out that in the general case the hamiltonization and canonical quantization of such an ac…
We investigate the consistency of coherent state (or Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz, or anti-Wick) quantization in regard to physical observations in the non- relativistic (or Galilean) regime. We compare this procedure with the canonical quantization (on both mathematical and physical levels) and examine whether they are or not equivalent in their predictions: is it possible to dif- ferentiate them on a strictly physical level? As far as only usual dynamical observables (position, momentum, energy, ...) are concerned, the quantization through coherent states is proved to be a perfectly valid altern…
The covariant canonical method of quantization based on the De Donder-Weyl covariant canonical formalism is used to formulate a world-sheet covariant quantization of bosonic strings. To provide the consistency with the standard non-covariant canonical quantization, it is necessary to adopt a Bohmian deterministic hidden-variable equation of motion. In this way, string theory suggests a solution to the problem of measurement in quantum mechanics.
We propose a manifestly covariant canonical method of field quantization based on the classical De Donder-Weyl covariant canonical formulation of field theory. Owing to covariance, the space and time arguments of fields are treated on an equal footing. To achieve both covariance and consistency with standard noncovariant canonical quantization of fields in Minkowski spacetime, it is necessary to adopt a covariant Bohmian formulation of quantum field theory. A preferred foliation of spacetime emerges dynamically owing to a purely quantum effect. The application to a simple time-reparametrizatio…
In the framework of the canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field, we impose as primary condition on the dynamics the positive definiteness of the energy spectrum. This implies that (Glauber) coherent states have to be considered for the longitudinal and the scalar photon fields. As a result we obtain that the relation holds which in the traditional approach is called the Gupta-Bleuler condition. Gauge invariance emerges as a property of the physical states. The group structure of the theory is recognized to be the one of $SU(2) \otimes SU(1,1)$.
We present, in the framework of the canonical quantization, a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a complex nonlinearity describing, in the mean field approximation, systems of collectively interacting particles. The quantum evolution equation is obtained starting from the study of a N-body classical system where the underlined nonlinear kinetics is governed by a kinetic interaction principle (KIP) recently proposed [G. Kaniadakis: Physica A 296 (2001), 405--425]. The KIP, both imposes the form of the generalized entropy associated to the classical system, and determines the Fokker-…
We present a canonical quantization of macroscopic electrodynamics. The results apply to inhomogeneous media with a broad class of linear magneto-electric responses which are consistent with the Kramers-Kronig and Onsager relations. Through its ability to accommodate strong dispersion and loss, our theory provides a rigorous foundation for the study of quantum optical processes in structures incorporating metamaterials, provided these may be modeled as magneto-electric media. Previous canonical treatments of dielectric and magneto-dielectric media have expressed the electromagnetic field opera…
The Feynman-Garrod path integral representation for time evolution is extended to arbitrary one-parameter continuous canonical transformations. One thereupon obtains a generalized Kerner-Sutcliffe formula for the unique quantum representation of the transformation generator, which can be an arbitrary classical dynamical variable. This closed-form quantization procedure is shown to be equivalent to a natural extension of the standard canonical quantization recipe -- an extension that resolves the operator-ordering ambiguity in favor of the Born-Jordan rule.
Ambiguities arising in different approaches (canonical, quasiclassical, path integration) to quantization are discussed by an example of the mechanics of a point-like particle in the Riemannian space (the geodesic dynamics). A way to select a single rule of quantization is proposed by requirement of a consistency of the quantum mechanics' following from the canonical and quasiclassical approaches. This rule selects also a definition of the path integration. A geometric interpretation of the noncovariance of the canonical Hamilton operator of a particle with respect to the diffeomorphisms of th…
This is an extended version of the talk given by the Author at the 40th Symposium on Mathematical Physics held in Torun, Poland, June 25-28, 2008. We review the methods of canonical quantization of free particle motion on curved submanifolds considered as a system with second class constraints. The work is based on our previous articles, quant-ph/0508044 and quant-ph/0508111. However, some new results are also presented.
The electromagnetic field is canonically quantized in the presence of a linear, dispersive and dissipative medium that is in uniform motion. Specifically we calculate the change in the normal modes of the coupled matter-field system and find a Hamiltonian that contains negative energy normal modes. We interpret these modes as the origin of phenomena such as quantum friction, and find that a detector initially in its ground state and coupled to the electromagnetic field in the vicinity of, or within a uniformly moving medium has a non-zero probability of excitation at T=0K.
Non-canonical quantization is based on certain reducible representations of canonical commutation relations. Relativistic formalism for electromagnetic non-canonical quantum fields is introduced. Unitary representations of the Poincaré group at the level of fields and states are explicitly given. Multi-photon and coherent states are introduced. Statistics of photons in a coherent state is Poissonian if an appropriately defined thermodynamic limit is performed. Radiation fields having a correct $S$ matrix are constructed. The $S$ matrix is given by a non-canonical coherent-state displacement op…
We study the quantization of a classical system of interacting particles obeying a recently proposed kinetic interaction principle (KIP) [G. Kaniadakis, Physica A {\bf 296}, 405 (2001)]. The KIP fixes the expression of the Fokker-Planck equation describing the kinetic evolution of the system and imposes the form of its entropy. In the framework of canonical quantization, we introduce a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NSEs) with complex nonlinearities, describing, in the mean field approximation, a system of collectively interacting particles whose underlying kinetics is governed by t…
We consider spin system defined on the coadjoint orbit with noncompact symmetry and investigate the quantization. Classical spin with noncompact SU(N,1) symmetry is first formulated as a dynamical system and the constraint analysis is performed to reduce the system from the group space to the coadjoint orbit which is a symplectic manifold with Kahler structure. We achieve this by solving the constraint directly. It is shown that the dynamical variables describing the noncompact spins can be written as functions of canonically conjugate variables and canonical quantization is possible on the re…
We find the action that describes the electromagnetic field in a spatially dispersive, homogeneous medium. This theory is quantized and the Hamiltonian is diagonalized in terms of a continuum of normal modes. It is found that the introduction of nonlocal response in the medium automatically regulates some previously divergent results, and we calculate a finite value for the intensity of the electromagnetic field at a fixed frequency within a homogeneous medium. To conclude we discuss the potential importance of spatial dispersion in taming the divergences that arise in calculations of Casimir-…
This is a collection of lectures given at the University of Heidelberg, especially but not exclusively for people who want to learn something about the canonical approach to quantum gravity, which is however not included in these lectures. They are about Dirac's general method to construct a quantum theory out of a classical theory, which has to be defined in terms of a Lagrangian. The classical Hamiltonian formalism is reviewed, with emphasis on the relation between constraints and gauge symmetries, and quantization is carried out without any kind of gauge fixing. The method is applied to thr…
Various aspects of dissipative and nondissipative decoherence of Rabi oscillations are discussed in the context of field quantization in alternative representations of CCR. Theory is confronted with experiment, and a possibility of more conclusive tests is analyzed.
Conventional canonical quantization procedures directly link various c-number and q-number quantities. Here, we advocate a different association of classical and quantum quantities that renders classical theory a natural subset of quantum theory with \hbar>0, in conformity with the real world wherein nature has chosen \hbar>0 rather than \hbar=0. While keeping the good results of conventional procedures, some examples are presented for which the new procedures offer better results than conventional ones.
Gravity does not naturally fit well with canonical quantization. Affine quantization is an alternative procedure that is similar to canonical quantization but may offer a positive result when canonical quantization fails to offer a positive result. Two simple examples given initially illustrate the power of affine quantization. These examples clearly point toward an affine quantization procedure that vastly simplifies a successful quantization of general relativity.
A theory of nonunitary-invertible as well as unitary canonical transformations is formulated in the context of Weyl's phase space representations. Exact solutions of the transformation kernels and the phase space propagators are given for the three fundamental canonical maps as fractional-linear, gauge and contact (point) transformations. Under the nonlinear maps a phase space representation is mapped to another phase space representation thereby extending the standard concept of covariance. This extended covariance allows Dirac-Jordan transformation theory to naturally emerge from the Hilbert…
We address an apparent conflict between the traditional canonical quantization framework of quantum theory and the spatially restricted quantum dynamics, when the translation invariance of the otherwise free quantum system is broken by boundary conditions. By invoking an exemplary case of a particle in an infinite well, we analyze spectral problems for related, confined and global, observables. In particular, we show how one can make sense of various operators pertaining to trapped particles by not ignoring the rest of the real line (e.g., that space which is never occupied by the particle in …
We propose a way to encode acceleration directly into quantum fields, establishing a new class of fields. Accelerated quantum fields, as we have named them, have some very interesting properties. The most important is that they provide a mathematically consistent way to quantize space-time in the same way that energy and momentum are quantized in standard quantum field theories.

Quantization of electromagnetic fields is investigated in the framework of stochastic variational method (SVM). Differently from the canonical quantization, this method does not require canonical form and quantization can be performed directly from the gauge invariant Lagrangian. The gauge condition is used to choose dynamically independent variables. We verify that, in the Coulomb gauge condition, SVM result is completely equivalent to the traditional result. On the other hand, in the Lorentz gauge condition, SVM quantization can be performed without introducing the indefinite metric. The tem…
Adopting a particular approach to fractional calculus, this paper sets out to build up a consistent extension of the Faddeev-Jackiw (or Symplectic) algorithm to carry out the quantization procedure of coarse-grained models in the standard canonical way. In our treatment, we shall work with the Modified Riemman Liouville (MRL) approach for fractional derivatives, where the chain rule is as efficient as it is in the standard differential calculus. We still present a case where we consider the situation of charged particles moving on a plane with velocity $\dot{r}$, subject to an external and int…
The similarity between classical and quantum physics is large enough to make an investigation of quantization methods a worthwhile endeavour. As history has shown, Dirac's canonical quantization method works reasonably well in the case of conventional quantum mechanics over $\mathbb{R}^n$ but it may fail in non-trivial phase spaces and also suffer from ordering problems. Affine quantization is an alternative method, similar to the canonical quantization, that may offer a positive result in situations for which canonical quantization fails. In this paper we revisit the affine quantization metho…
The main goal of this work is to study the Dirac oscillator as a quantum field using the canonical formalism of quantum field theory and to develop the canonical quantization procedure for this system in $(1+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensions. This is possible because the Dirac oscillator is characterized by the absence of the Klein paradox and by the completeness of its eigenfunctions. We show that the Dirac oscillator field can be seen as constituted by infinite degrees of freedom which are identified as decoupled quantum linear harmonic oscillators. We observe that while for the free Dirac field th…
For a particle moving on a half-line or in an interval the operator $\hat p = - i \partial_x$ is not self-adjoint and thus does not qualify as the physical momentum. Consequently canonical quantization based on $\hat p$ fails. Based upon a new concept for a self-adjoint momentum operator $\hat p_R$, we show that canonical quantization can indeed be implemented on the half-line and on an interval. Both the Hamiltonian $\hat H$ and the momentum operator $\hat p_R$ are endowed with self-adjoint extension parameters that characterize the corresponding domains $D(\hat H)$ and $D(\hat p_R)$ in the H…
Canonical quantization may be approached from several different starting points. The usual approaches involve promotion of c-numbers to q-numbers, or path integral constructs, each of which generally succeeds only in Cartesian coordinates. All quantization schemes that lead to Hilbert space vectors and Weyl operators---even those that eschew Cartesian coordinates---implicitly contain a metric on a flat phase space. This feature is demonstrated by studying the classical and quantum ``aggregations'', namely, the set of all facts and properties resident in all classical and quantum theories, resp…
Using the method of canonical group quantization, we construct the angular momentum operators associated to configuration spaces with the topology of (i) a sphere and (ii) a projective plane. In the first case, the obtained angular momentum operators are the quantum version of Poincare's vector, i.e., the physically correct angular momentum operators for an electron coupled to the field of a magnetic monopole. In the second case, the obtained operators represent the angular momentum operators of a system of two indistinguishable spin zero quantum particles in three spatial dimensions. We expli…
We consider the problem of constrained motion along a conic path under a given external potential function. The model is described as a second-class system capturing the behavior of a certain class of specific quantum field theories. By exhibiting a suitable integration factor, we obtain the general solution for the associated non-linear differential equations. We perform the canonical quantization in a consistent way in terms of the corresponding Dirac brackets. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm to unravel and classify the whole internal constraints structure inherent to its dynamical Ham…
For particles constrained on a curved surface, how to perform quantization within Dirac's canonical quantization scheme is a long-standing problem. On one hand, Dirac stressed that the Cartesian coordinate system has fundamental importance in passing from the classical Hamiltonian to its quantum mechanical form while preserving the classical algebraic structure between positions, momenta and Hamiltonian to the extent possible. On the other, on the curved surface, we have no exact Cartesian coordinate system within intrinsic geometry. These two facts imply that the three-dimensional Euclidean s…
