A preconditioning for the Wilson fermion matrix on the lattice is defined which is particularly suited to the case when the temporal lattice spacing is much smaller than the spatial one. Details on the implementation of the scheme are given. The method is tested in numerical studies of QCD on anisotropic lattices.
We show how the hopping parameter expansion at order $κ^2$ and $κ^4$ can be exploited in the simulation of lattice QCD with two flavours of degenerate Wilson fermions. A natural extension of this idea is a "UV-filtering" by using rooted polynomials. These approaches can be easily combined with, for example, mass preconditioning. First numerical tests are performed for the Wilson gauge action at $β=5.6$ and $κ=0.156$ and $0.1575$.
There exist two major problems in application of the conventional block BiCGSTAB method to the O(a)-improved Wilson-Dirac equation with multiple right-hand-sides: One is the deviation between the true and the recursive residuals. The other is the convergence failure observed at smaller quark masses for enlarged number of the right-hand-sides. The block BiCGGR algorithm which was recently proposed by the authors succeeds in solving the former problem. In this article we show that a preconditioning technique allows us to improve the convergence behavior for increasing number of the right-hand-si…
The simulation of lattice QCD on massively parallel computers stimulated the development of scalable algorithms for the solution of sparse linear systems. We tackle the problem of the Wilson-Dirac operator inversion by combining a Schwarz alternating procedure (SAP) in multiplicative form with a flexible variant of the GMRES-DR algorithm. We show that restarted GMRES is not able to converge when the system is poorly conditioned. By adding deflation in the form of the FGMRES-DR algorithm, an important fraction of the information produced by the iterates is kept between successive restarts leadi…
The predominant method for generating Lattice QCD configurations is Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC). In order to speed up this generation, a wide range of preconditioning techniques that modify the lattice action have been devised. This work compares the performance of the well-known Hasenbusch preconditioning technique with the polynomial filtering technique on a small $16^3 \times 32$ lattice with two flavours of Wilson fermions at a pion mass $M_π \sim 400~\mathrm{MeV}$. We explore a novel method of combining polynomial and Hasenbusch filters, revealing a speedup when compared to the standard two …
Results on the computational efficiency of 2-flavor staggered Wilson fermions compared to usual Wilson fermions in a quenched lattice QCD simulation on $16^3\times32$ lattice at $β=6$ are reported. We compare the cost of inverting the Dirac matrix on a source by the conjugate gradient (CG) method for both of these fermion formulations, at the same pion masses, and without preconditioning. We find that the number of CG iterations required for convergence, averaged over the ensemble, is less by a factor of almost 2 for staggered Wilson fermions, with only a mild dependence on the pion mass. We a…
We use the Wilson flow to define the gauge anisotropy at a given physical scale. We demonstrate the use of the anisotropic flow by performing the tuning of the bare gauge anisotropy in the tree-level Symanzik action for several lattice spacings and target anisotropies. We use this method to tune the anisotropy parameters in full QCD, where we also exploit the diminishing effect of a well chosen smearing on the renormalization of the fermion anisotropy.
We present results on the world's first over 100 PFLOPS single precision lattice QCD quark solver on the japanese new supercomputer Fugaku. We achieve a factor 38 time speedup from the supercomputer K on the same problem size, $192^4$, with 102 PFLOPS, 10% floating-point operation efficiency against single precision floating-point operation peak. The evaluation region is the single precision BiCGStab for a Clover-Wilson Dirac matrix with Schwarz Alternating Procedure domain decomposition preconditioning using Jacobi iteration for the local domain matrix inversion.
The FASTSUM Collaboration presents its first results for the electric charge susceptibility in QCD using 2+1 dynamical flavours of Wilson quark on anisotropic lattices. Spatial volumes of (2.94 fm)^3 are used at fixed cut-off with temperatures ranging from below T_c to ~2 T_c.
We study the renormalisation of $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories on general anisotropic lattices, to one-loop order in perturbation theory, employing the background field method. The results are then applied in the context of two different approaches to hadronic high-energy scattering. In the context of the Euclidean nonperturbative approach to soft high-energy scattering based on Wilson loops, we refine the nonperturbative justification of the analytic continuation relations of the relevant Wilson-loop correlators, required to obtain physical results. In the context of longitudinally-rescaled actions…
We study properties of the thermal transition in QCD, using anisotropic, fixed-scale lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. Observables are compared for two values of the pion mass, focusing on chiral properties. Results are presented for the Polyakov loop, various susceptibilities, the chiral condensate and its susceptibility, and the onset of parity doubling in the light and strange baryonic sector.
