We investigate the equation of state and elastic properties of hcp iron at high pressures and high temperatures using first principles linear response linear-muffin-tin-orbital method in the generalized-gradient approximation. We calculate the Helmholtz free energy as a function of volume, temperature, and volume-conserving strains, including the electronic excitation contributions from band structures and lattice vibrational contributions from quasi-harmonic lattice dynamics. We perform detailed investigations on the behavior of elastic moduli and equation of state properties as functions of temperature and pressure, including the pressure-volume equation of state, bulk modulus, the thermal expansion coefficient, the Gruneisen ratio, and the shock Hugoniot. Detailed comparison has been made with available experimental measurements and theoretical predictions.

We use first principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the thermodynamic integration method to study the hcp-bcc transition and melting of beryllium up to a pressure of 1600~GPa. We derive the melting line by equating solid and liquid Gibbs free energies, and represent it by a Simon Glatzel fit $T_m= 1564~\text{K} (1 + P/(15.6032 ~\text{GPa}))^{0.383}$, which is in good agreement with previous two-phase simulations below 6000~K. We also derive the hcp-bcc solid-solid phase boundary and show the quasiharmonic approximation underestimates the stability of the hcp structure, predicting…
The Wu-Wentzcovitch semi-analytical method (SAM) is a concise and predictive formalism to calculate the high-pressure and high-temperature (high-PT) thermoelastic tensor (Cij) of crystalline materials. This method has been successfully applied to materials across different crystal systems in conjunction with ab initio calculations of static elastic coefficients and phonon frequencies. Such results have offered first-hand insights into the composition and structure of the Earth's mantle. Here we introduce the cij package, a Python implementation of the SAM-Cij formalism. It enables a thermoelas…
The energy differences between the face-centered cubic (FCC) and hexagonal closed packed (HCP) structures of the argon (Ar) crystal are studied using the first-principles electronic-structure approach at the level of random phase approximation (RPA) plus renormalized single exitation (rSE) correction. By treating both structures at equal footing (i.e., employing the same computational supercell and k grid sampling), our RPA+rSE calculations show that, at zero temperature, the FCC structure is lower in energy than the HCP structure over a wide pressure range. The influence of zero-point energy …

The high-pressure melting diagram of iron is a vital ingredient for the geodynamic modeling of planetary interiors. Nonetheless, available data for molten iron show an alarming discrepancy. Herein, we propose an efficient one-phase approach to capture the solid-liquid transition of iron under extreme conditions. Our basic idea is to extend the statistical moment method to determine the density of iron in the TPa region. On that basis, we adapt the work-heat equivalence principle to appropriately link equation-of-state parameters with melting properties. This strategy allows explaining cutting-…

The crystal structure of iron in the Earth's inner core remains debated. Most recent experiments suggest a hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase. In simulations, it has been generally agreed that the hcp-Fe is stable at inner core pressures and relatively low temperatures. At high temperatures, however, several studies suggest a body-centered-cubic (bcc) phase at the inner core condition. We have examined the crystal structure of iron at high pressures over 2 million atmospheres (>200GPa) and at high temperatures over 5000 kelvin in a laser-heated diamond cell using microstructure analysis combin…

Manganese, in the a-Mn structure, has been studied using synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell up to 220 GPa at room temperature combined with density functional calculations (DFT). The experiment reveals an extended pressure stability of the a-Mn phase up to the highest pressure of this study, in contrast with previous experimental and theoretical studies. On the other hand, calculations reveal that the previously predicted hcp-Mn phase becomes lower in enthalpy than the a-Mn phase above 160 GPa. The apparent discrepancy is explained due to a substantial electron transf…
The martensitic transformation is a fundamental physical phenomenon at the origin of important industrial applications. However, the underlying microscopic mechanism, which is of critical importance to explain the outstanding mechanical properties of martensitic materials, is still not fully understood. This is because for most martensitic materials the transformation is a fast process that makes in situ studies extremely challenging. Noble solids krypton and xenon undergo a progressive pressure induced fcc to hcp martensitic transition with a very wide coexistence domain. Here, we took advant…
The Mg-Zn and Al-Zn binary alloys have been investigated theoretically under static isotropic pressure. The stable phases of these binaries on both initially hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) and face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattices have been determined by utilizing an iterative approach that uses a configurational cluster expansion method, Monte Carlo search algorithm, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on 64-atom models, it is shown that the most stable phases of the Mg-Zn binary alloy under ambient condition are $\rm MgZn_3$, $\rm Mg_{19}Zn_{45}$, $\rm MgZn$, and $\rm Mg_{34}Z…
We compute the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of solid hcp Fe to pressures and temperatures of Earth's core. We find significant contributions from electron-electron scattering, usually neglected at high temperatures in transition metals. Our calculations show a quasi-linear relation between electrical resistivity and temperature for hcp Fe at extreme high pressures. We obtain thermal and electrical conductivities that are consistent with experiments considering reasonable error. The predicted thermal conductivity is reduced from previous estimates that neglect electron-electr…
We report the synthesis of new equimolar high-entropy alloys (HEAs) formed from five or six 4d/5d transition metals that are each from a different Group of the Periodic Table. These include MoReRuRhPt and MoReRuIrPt, which have a valence electron count (VEC) of 8 and crystallise in the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure, making them isoelectronic and isostructural to the elements Ru and Os and the high-pressure phase of the well-known HEA CrMnFeCoNi. Analogous HEAs with VECs of 7, 6 and 5 crystallise with multiple phases, which we rationalise using the atomic size difference, $δ$, and the …
