We present ab-initio calculations of effective magnetic exchange, $J$, as well as Hubbard parameters ($t$, $U$ and $δ\varepsilon$) as a function of the local distribution of doping atoms for the high-$T_c$ superconducting $\rm (Ca_xLa_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_3O_y$ family. We found that both the exchange and the energies of the magnetic orbitals are strongly dependant on the local dopant distribution, both through the induced modification of the apical oxygen location and of the induced local electrostatic potential. The $J$ real-space map, for a random distribution of dopants, positively compares with observed STS gap inhomogeneity maps. Similarly, the orbital energy fluctuations induce weak charge inhomogeneities on copper sites, that can be positively compared with the observed LDOS inhomogeneities. These results clearly support an extrinsic origin of both the gap inhomogeneities and LDOS.
We consider the consequences for circulating-current states of a cyclic, four-spin, ``ring-exchange'' interaction of the type shown recently to be significant in cuprate systems. The real-space Hartree-Fock approach is used to establish the existence of charge-current and spin-current phases in a generalized Hubbard model for the CuO_2 planes in cuprates. We compare the results of the Hartree-Fock approximation with the correlated states renormalized by Gutzwiller projection factors which allows us to gauge the qualitative effects of projection to no double site occupancy. We find that charge …
Spin correlations in the paramagnetic phase of lanthanum cuprate have been studied using polarized neutron scattering, with two important results. First, the temperature dependence of the characteristic energy scale of the fluctuations and the amplitude of the neutron structure factor are shown to be in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the quantum non-linear sigma model. Secondly, comparison of a high-temperature series expansion of the equal-time spin correlations with the diffuse neutron intensity provides definitive experimental evidence for ring exchange.
The optical conductivity sigma(omega) is calculated at finite temperature T for CuO_2 chain clusters within a pd-Hubbard model. Data at T = 300 K for Li_2CuO_2 are reanalyzed within this approach. The relative weights of Zhang-Rice singlet and triplet charge excitations near 2.5 and 4 eV, respectively, depend strongly on T, and a rather dramatic dependence of sigma(omega) on the ratio of the first to second neighbor exchange integrals is predicted. On the basis of these results, information about exchange interactionsfor frustrated edge-shared cuprates can be obtained from T-dependent optical …
I point out that a magnetotransport theory on the basis of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, which is proposed in order to explain anomalous transport properties in the normal state of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors, is not compatible with the Fermi liquid theory and that the anomaly obtained there ascribes to the inconsistency of the approximation.
The theory of superconductivity within the t-J model, as relevant for cuprates, is developed. It is based on the equations of motion for projected fermionic operators and the mode-coupling approximation for the self-energy matrix. The dynamical spin susceptibility at various doping is considered as an input, extracted from experiments. The analysis shows that the superconductivity onset is dominated by the spin-fluctuation contribution. We show that T_c is limited by the spin-fluctuation scale $Γ$ and shows a pronounced dependence on the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t'. The latter can offer a…
We reply to the criticism from the authors of arXiv:1502.02782 of the spin-fluctuation scenario for charge order in the cuprates. The authors of of arXiv:1502.02782 argued that spin-fluctuation exchange cannot give rise to charge order with observed momentum $(Q, 0)/(0, Q)$ due to the absence of nesting for a half of fermions involved. We explicitly show the instability towards charge order exists even in the "worst-case" scenario of anti-nesting for a half of fermions.
Starting from the three-band Hubbard model for the cuprates, we calculate analytically the four-spin cyclic exchange in the limit of infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion and zero O-O hopping $t_{pp}$ using two methods: i) perturbation theory in $t_{pd}/Δ$, where $t_{pd}$ is the Cu-O hopping and $Δ$ the Cu-O charge transfer energy and ii) exact solution of a Cu$_4$O$_4$ plaquette. The latter method coincides with the first to order eight in $t_{pd}$ and permits to extend the results to $t_{pd}/Δ$ of order one. The results are relevant to recent experimental and theoretical research that relate th…
A link between the spin fluctuation and the "fermiology" is explored for the single-band Hubbard model within the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation. We show that the experimentally observed peak position of the spin structure in the high T_C cuprates can be understood from the model that reproduces the experimentally observed Fermi surface. In particular, both the variation of the incommensurability of the peak in the spin structure and the evolution of the Fermi surface with hole doping in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 may be understood with a second nearest neighbor hopping decreasing with hole …

We investigate the influence of a cyclic spin exchange J_{cyc} on the one- and two-triplet excitations of an undoped two-leg S=1/2 ladder, using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The dispersion of the S=0 two-triplet bound state is dramatically reduced by J_{cyc} due to a repulsion between triplets on neighboring rungs. In (La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} a consistent description of both the spin gap and the S=0 bound state requires $J_{cyc}/J_\perp \approx 0.20-0.27$ and $J/J_{\perp} \approx 1.25-1.35$. With these coupling ratios the recently developed dynamical DMRG yields an excelle…
Spin fluctuations represent the lowest established energy scale in cuprates and are crucial for the understanding of anomalous normal state properties and superconductivity in these materials. The memory-function approach to the spin response in the t-J model is described. Combined with numerical results for small systems it is able to explain the anomalous scaling at low doping and the crossover to the Fermi-liquid-like behavior in overdoped systems. Within the superconducting phase the theory reproduces the resonant peak and its peculiar double dispersion. Such spin fluctuations are then use…
A microscopic theory of the electrical conductivity $σ(ω)$ within the t-J model is developed. An exact representation for $σ(ω)$ is obtained using the memory-function technique for the relaxation function in terms of the Hubbard operators, and the generalized Drude law is derived. The relaxation rate due to the decay of charge excitations into particle-hole pairs assisted by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is calculated in the mode-coupling approximation. Using results for the spectral function of spin excitations calculated previously, the relaxation rate and the optical and dc conductivi…
Quantitative analysis of the Josephson effect is shown to provide direct information about phase fluctuations in the superconducting banks. Applying the analysis to the cuprates, substantial quantum fluctuations between d-wave and s-wave pairing are found at low temperatures. A phenomenological model of such fluctuations is introduced and solved in a self-consistent single-site approximation. The cuprate parameters are argued to lie close to an exotic superconductor phase with condensation of electron quadruplets.
We describe here a minimal theory of tight binding electrons moving on the square planar Cu lattice of the hole-doped cuprates and mixed quantum mechanically with pairs of them (Cooper pairs). Superconductivity occurring at the transition temperature T_c is the long-range, d-wave symmetry phase coherence of these Cooper pairs. Fluctuations necessarily associated with incipient long-range superconducting order have a generic large distance behaviour near T_c. We calculate the spectral density of electrons coupled to such Cooper pair fluctuations and show that features observed in Angle Resolved…
We compare efforts to extract self energies and fluctuation spectra of the cuprates using optical and photoemission techniques. The fluctuations have contributions from both the coherent and incoherent parts of the band, which are spread over the full bare bandwidth of >2eV. Many experimental studies concentrate on the coherent part of the band and hence miss higher energy fluctuations. Our study establishes the universal presence of high energy bosonic fluctuations across various spectroscopies as a key ingredient in the high temperature superconducting cuprates.
To describe the cuprate superconductors, models of strongly correlated electronic systems, such as the Hubbard or t-J models, are commonly employed. To study these models, projected (Hubbard) operators have to be used. Due to the unconventional commutation relations for the Hubbard operators, a specific kinematical interaction of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations emerges. The interaction is induced by the intraband hopping with a coupling parameter of the order of the kinetic energy of electrons W which is much larger than the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction J induced by the i…
We report ab initio quantum chemical cluster calculations of the chain (J_a) and the largest interchain (J_b) Heisenberg exchange of the chain cuprates Ca_2CuO_3 and Sr_2CuO_3. We find that J_a is comparable to the in-plane J in layered cuprates and J_a/J_b ~250-400. Using recent theory we obtain close agreement with experiment for the staggered moments and the critical temperatures. This implies that T_N does not depend on the third parameter J_c << J_b, and cannot be calculated using spin-wave theory. We propose an explanation for this interms of a 1D->2D cross-over.
Ab initio quantum chemical calculations of Heisenberg exchange in linear cuprate antiferromagnets are reported. For Sr2CuO3 I obtain Ja=-119 meV for the intrachain coupling and Jb=-0.28 meV for the interchain coupling. For Ca2CuO3 I find Ja=-119 meV and Jb=-0.52 meV. With these values, recent mean field theory gives the staggered magnetic moments as 0.069 and 0.095 mB, in full agreement with recent experiments. The experimental Neel temperatures are found to be proportional to the ratio Jb/Ja to a high accuracy. This indicates that the isolated chain is an antiferromagnet with vanishing Tn.
On the basis of the Hubbard model, we extend the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach to investigating the properties of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase in electron-doped cuprate superconductors. Furthermore, by incorporating the effect of scatterings due to the disordered dopant-atoms into the FLEX formalism, our numerical results show that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, the onset temperature of pseudogap due to spin fluctuations, the spectral density of the single particle near the Fermi surface, and the staggered magnetization in the AF phase as a function of electron doping can…
The main relaxation mechanism of crystal-field excitations in rare-earth ions in cuprates is believed to be provided by the fluctuations of crystalline electric field induced by a dynamic charge inhomogeneity generic for the doped cuprates. We address the generalized granular model as one of the model scenario for such an ingomogeneity where the cuprate charge subsystem remind that of Wigner crystal with the melting transition and phonon-like positional excitation modes. Formal description of R-ion relaxation coincides with that of recently suggested magnetoelastic mechanism.
Fluctuation effects in underdoped cuprates under high fields are examined by trying to fit theoretical results to resistivity and Nernst data in vortex states. The superconducting (SC) fluctuation in underdoped cuprates includes not only the ordinary thermal contribution but also a large amount of quantum dynamical contributions. Together with this, the presence of a SC pseudogap region T_0-T_{c0} increasing with underdoping is found to be the origin of the Nernst coefficient becoming anomalously smaller and the in-plane coherence length {\it apparently} increasing with underdoping.
We propose a microscopic theory of superconductivity for systems with strong electron correlations such as cuprates in the framework of the extended Hubbard model where the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction are taken into account. The Dyson equation for the normal and pair Green functions for the Hubbard operators (HOs) is derived. Due to the unconventional commutation relations for the HOs, a specific kinematical interaction of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations with a large coupling constant of the order of the kinetic energy of electrons $W$ emerges that r…
We calculate the Heisenberg exchange J in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic cuprates La2CuO4, YBa2Cu3O6, Nd2CuO4 and Sr2CuO2Cl2. We apply all-electron (MC)SCF and non-orthogonal CI calculations to [Cu2O11]18-, [Cu2O9]14-, [Cu2O7]10- and [Cu2O7Cl4]14- clusters in a model charge embedding. The (MC)SCF triplet and singlet ground states are well characterized by Cu2+ (dx2-y2) and O2-. The antiferromagnetic exchange is strongly enhanced by admixing relaxed (MC)SCF triplet and singlet excited states, in which a single electron is transferred from the central O ion to Cu. We ascribe this effect to orbit…
We study Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors for a spin fluctuation pairing interaction. Using an electronic theory we calculate in particular for the underdoped cuprate superconductors the superfluid density $n_s(T)$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(x) \propto n_s$ below which phase coherent Cooper-pairs occur, and $T_c^{*}(x)$ where the phase incoherent Cooper-pairs disappear. Also we present results for the penetration depth $λ(x,T)$ and for the weak pseudogap temperature $T^{*}(x)$ at which a gap structure occurs in the spectral density. A Meißner effe…
The anomalous transport and thermodynamic properties in the quantum-critical region, in the cuprates, and in the quasi-two dimensional Fe-based superconductors and heavy-fermion compounds, have the same temperature dependences. This can occur only if, despite their vast microscopic differences, a common statistical mechanical model describes their phase transitions. The antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ic models for the latter two, just as the loop-current model for the cuprates, map to the dissipative XY model. The solution of this model in 2+1 D reveals that the critical fluctuations are determined b…
We report experimental evidence of formation of antiferromagnetic clusters in composites made of a cuprate superconductor La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (LCu) and a ferromagnet La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LCo). From linear and non-linear ac-susceptibility measurement on this composite material it is found that the exchange field of LCo suppress the dynamic antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation of LCu and convert it into the short range ordered superparamagnetic type antiferromagnetic (AFM) clusters at the cost of superconducting volume fraction. These shrank superconducting volume fraction shows quantum size effect (QSE) …
We revisit a problem of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric exchange coupling for a single bond in cuprates specifying the local spin-orbital contributions to Dzyaloshinsky vector focusing on the oxygen term. The Dzyaloshinsky vector and respective weak ferromagnetic moment is shown to be a superposition of comparable and, sometimes, competing local Cu and O contributions. The intermediate oxygen $^{17}$O Knight shift is shown to be an effective tool to inspect the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling in an external magnetic field. We predict the effect of $strong$ oxygen weak antiferromagn…
In underdoped cuprates fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter play a role due to the small superfluid density. We consider the effects of phase fluctuations assuming the exchange of spin fluctuations to be the predominant pairing interaction. Spin fluctuations are treated in the fluctuation-exchange approximation, while phase fluctuations are included by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. We calculate the stiffness against phase fluctuations, ns(omega)/m*, as a function of doping, temperature, and frequency, taking its renormalization by phase fluctuations into a…
Transport properties provide important access to a solid's quasiparticles, such as quasiparticle density, mobility, and scattering. The transport of heat can be particularly revealing because, in principle, all types of excitations in a solid may contribute. Heat transport is well understood for phonons and electrons, but relatively little is known about heat transported by magnetic excitations. However, during the last about two decades, the magnetic heat transport attracted increasing attention after the discovery of large and unusual signatures of it in low-dimensional quantum magnetic cupr…
Na5Cu3O6, a new member of one dimensional charge ordered chain cuprates, was synthesized via the azide/nitrate route by reacting NaN3, NaNO3 and CuO. According to single crystal X-ray analysis, one dimensional CuO2 chains built up from planar, edge-sharing CuO4 squares are a dominant feature of the crystal structure. From the analysis of the Cu-O bond lengths we find that the system forms a Wigner lattice. The commensurate charge order allows to explicitly assign the valence states of either +2 or +3 to each copper atom resulting in a repetition according to Cu(2+)-Cu(3+)-Cu(2+)-Cu(2+)-Cu(3+)-…
Correlation effects in CuO$_2$ layers give rise to a complicated landscape of collective excitations in high-T$_{\rm c}$ cuprates. Their description requires an accurate account for electronic fluctuations at a very broad energy range and remains a challenge for the theory. Particularly, there is no conventional explanation of the experimentally observed `resonant' antiferromagnetic mode, which is often considered to be a mediator of superconductivity. Here we model spin excitations of the hole-doped cuprates in the paramagnetic regime and show that this antiferromagnetic mode is associated wi…
We calculate the optical conductivity in a clean system of quasiparticles coupled to charge-ordering collective modes. The absorption induced by these modes may produce an anomalous frequency and temperature dependence of low-energy optical absorption in some cuprates. However, the coupling with lattice degrees of freedom introduces a non-universal energy scale leading to scaling violation in low-temperature optical conductivity.
We propose a possible mechanism of the charge stripe order due to the next-nearest neighbor exchange interaction J' in the two-dimensional t-J model, based on the concept of the phase separation. We also calculate some hole correlation functions of the finite cluster of the model using the numerical diagonalization, to examine the realization of the mechanism. It is also found that the next-nearest neighbor hopping t' suppresses the stripe order induced by the present mechanism for t'<0, while it enhances for t'>0.
An electron-phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons is studied within the theoretical framework of Kondo lattices. It is relevant in strongly correlated electron liquids in cuprate oxide superconductors, which lie in the vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. It is enhanced by antiferromagnetic and superconducting fluctuations, which are developed mainly because of the superexchange interaction. When the enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction is large enough, it can explain the softening of phonons and kinks in the qu…
We consider the effect of classical phase fluctuations on the quasiparticle spectra of underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors in the pseudogap regime above $T_c$. We show that photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy data are well accounted for by a simple model in which mean field d-wave quasiparticles are semiclasically coupled to supercurrents induced by fluctuating unbound vortex-antivortex pairs. We argue that the data imply that transverse phase fluctuations are important at temperatures above $T_c$, while longitudinal fluctuations are unimportant at all temperatures.
We calculate the optical and Raman response within a phenomenological model of fermion quasiparticles coupled to nearly critical collective modes. We find that, whereas critical scaling properties might be masked in optical spectra due to charge conservation, distinct critical signatures of charge and spin fluctuations can be detected in Raman spectra exploiting specific symmetry properties. We compare our results with recent experiments on the cuprates.
Within the Hubbard-Holstein model with long-range Coulomb forces, we revisit the charge-ordering scenario for the superconducting cuprates and account for the presence or the absence of a formed stripe phase in different classes of cuprates. We also evaluate the mean-field and the fluctuation-corrected critical lines for charge ordering and we relate them with the various pseudogap crossover lines occurring in the cuprates and we discuss a mechanism for their peculiar isotopic dependence. Considering the dynamical nature of the charge-ordering transition, we explain the spread of T* and of its…
This is a reply to the comment by O. Narikiyo (cond-mat/0012505) on our paper J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 68}, (1999) 1614. We point out mistakes about his arguments, and we show that our analysis is compatible with the established Fermi liquid theory, so the obtained result is justified.
A microscopic theory of superconductivity is formulated within an effective $p$-$d$ Hubbard model for a CuO2 plane. By applying the Mori-type projection technique, the Dyson equation is derived for the Green functions in terms of Hubbard operators. The antiferromagnetic exchange caused by interband hopping results in pairing of all carries in the conduction subband and high Tc proportional to the Fermi energy. Kinematic interaction in intraband hopping is responsible for the conventional spin-fluctuation pairing. Numerical solution of the gap equation proves the d-wave gap symmetry and defines…
Charge order has emerged as a generic feature of doped cuprates, leading to important questions about its origin and its relation to superconductivity. Recent experiments on two classes of hole doped cuprates indicate a novel d-wave symmetry for the order. These were motivated by earlier spin fluctuation theoretical studies based on an expansion about hot spots in the Brillouin zone that indicated such order would be competitive with d-wave superconductivity. Here, we reexamine this problem by solving strong coupling equations in the full Brillouin zone. Our results find that bond-oriented ord…
We analyze pseudogap phenomena widely observed in the underdoped cuprates. We assume the existence of a strong d-wave pairing force competing with antiferromagnetic(AFM) fluctuations and the formation of flat and damped dispersion around the $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ region as two important elements caused by the proximity from the Mott insulator. Using the mode-mode coupling theory for the d-wave superconducting(dSC) and AFM fluctuations, we reproduce basic properties of the pseudogap seen in the magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, angle resolved photoemission and tunneling measurements in the …
The opening of the pseudogap in underdoped cuprates breaks up the Fermi surface, which may lead to a breakup of the d-wave order parameter into two subband amplitudes and a low energy Leggett mode due to phase fluctuations between them. This causes a large increase in the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations with an overdamped Leggett mode. Almost resonant scattering of inter-subband phonons to a state with a pair of Leggett modes causes anomalously strong damping. In the ordered state, the Leggett mode develops a finite energy, suppressing the anomalous phonon damping but leading…
We show that the Néel transition and spin fluctuations near the Néel transition in planar cuprates can be described by an SU(2) invariant relativistic four-fermion model in 2+1 dimensions. Features of the pseudogap phenomenon are naturally described by the appearance of an anomalous dimension for the spinon propagator.
We study the dynamical spin susceptibility of a correlated d-wave superconductor (dSC) in the presence of disorder, using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach. This model provides a concrete realization of the notion that disorder slows down spin fluctuations, which eventually "freeze out". The evolution of disorder-induced spectral weight transfer agrees qualitatively with experimental observations on underdoped cuprate superconductors. For sufficiently large disorder concentrations, static spin density wave (SDW) order is created when droplets of magnetism nucleated by impurities overlap. W…
We present a microscopic derivation of the nematic charge-density-wave (CDW) formation in cuprate superconductors based on the three-orbital d-p Hubbard model, by introducing the vertex correction (VC) into the charge susceptibility. The CDW instability at $q=(Δ_{FS},0)$, $(0,Δ_{FS})$ appears when the spin fluctuations are strong, due to the strong charge-spin interference represented by the VC. Here, $Δ_{FS}$ is the wavenumber between the neighboring hot spots. The obtained spin-fluctuation-driven CDW is expressed as the "intra-unit-cell orbital order" accompanied by the charge transfer betwe…
Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments on the cuprate superconductors, we present a phenomenological framework describing the dynamics of collective spin excitations coupled to charge/bond order fluctuations. Our quantum lattice model contains two order parameter fields, and can capture spin excitations both in broken-symmetry states with static lattice modulations, as well as in homogeneous states where the charge/bond order is fluctuating. We present results for different types of static charge/bond order, namely site- and bond-centered stripes, and plaquette modulation.
Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, we report the obser…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in doped NdNiO$_2$, we study the magnetic exchange interaction $J$ in layered $d^9$ nickelates from first principles. The mother compounds of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates belong to the charge-transfer regime in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen diagram and have $J$ larger than 100 meV. While this feature makes the cuprates very different from other transition metal oxides, it is of great interest whether layered $d^9$ nickelates can also have such a large $J$. However, one complexity is that NdNiO$_2$ is not a Mott insulator due to carrier doping…
We present results from light scattering experiments on three insulating antiferromagnetic cuprates, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.05}$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$YCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, and La$_2$CuO$_4$ as a function of polarization and excitation energy {using samples of the latest generation. From the raw data we derive symmetry-resolved spectra.} The spectral shape in $B_{1g}$ symmetry is found to be nearly universal and independent of the excitation energy. The spectra agree quantitatively with predictions by field theory [\onlinecite{Weidinger:2015}] facilitating the precise extraction of the Heisenberg coupling $J$.…
We present a detailed study in the paramagnetic regime of the frustrated $s$ = 1/2 spin-compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Our data reveal highly anisotropic values for the saturation field along the crystallographic main directions, with $\sim$ 7.6, $\sim$ 10.5 and $\sim$ 8.5\,T for the $a$, $b$, and $c$ axes, respectively. In the paramagnetic regime, this behavior is explained mainly by the anisotropy of the \textit{g}-factor but leaving room for an easy-axis exchange anisotro…
Metals interacting via short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are unstable to sign-changing superconductivity at low temperatures. For the cuprates, this leading instability leads to the well known $d-$wave superconducting state. However, there is also a secondary instability to an incommensurate charge density wave, with a predominantly $d-$wave form factor, arising from the same antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Recent experiments in the pseudogap regime of the hole-doped cuprates have found strong evidence for such a charge density wave order and, in particular, the predicted $d-$wave for…
Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of avai…
We propose a microscopical theory of superconductivity in CuO$_2$ layer within the effective two-band Hubbard model in the strong correlation limit. By applying a projection technique for the matrix Green function in terms of the Hubbard operators, the Dyson equation is derived. It is proved that in the mean-field approximation d-wave superconducting pairing mediated by the conventional exchange interaction occurs. Allowing for the self-energy corrections due to kinematic interaction, a spin-fluctuation d-wave pairing is also obtained. $T\sb{c}$ dependence on the hole concentration and $\bf k$…
The single-site two-electron exchange amplitude J_sd between the Cu 4s and Cu 3d_{x^2-y^2} states is found to be the pairing mechanism of high-T_c overdoped cuprates. The noninteracting part of the Hamiltonian spans the copper Cu 4s, Cu 3d_{x^2-y^2} and oxygen O 2p_x and O 2p_y states. Within the standard BCS treatment an explicit expression for the momentum dependence of the gap Delta_p is derived and shown to fit the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. The basic thermodynamic and electrodynamic properties of the model (specific heat C(T), London penetration depth lambda(T…
We present reliable many-body calculations for the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model that explain in detail the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments on electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The origin of the pseudogap is traced to two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations whose calculated temperature dependent correlation length also agrees with recent neutron scattering measurements. We make specific predictions for photoemission, for neutron scattering and for the phase diagram.
Recent experimental and theoretical studies have established that the spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1$, measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments is a site-sensitive probe for the electronic spectrum in the mixed state of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. While some groups suggested that $1/T_1$ is solely determined by spin-flip scattering of BCS-like electrons, other groups stressed the importance of antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations. We show that these two relaxation mechanisms give rise to a {\it qualitatively} different temperature and frequency dependence of $^{17}$O $1/T_1$.…
One of the prime manifestations of an anisotropic electronic state in underdoped cuprates is the in-plane resistivity anisotropy $Δρ\equiv(ρ_{a}-ρ_{b})/ρ_{b}$. Here we use a Boltzmann-equation approach to compute the contribution to $Δρ$ arising from scattering by anisotropic charge and spin fluctuations, which have been recently observed experimentally. While the anisotropy in the charge fluctuations is manifested in the correlation length, the anisotropy in the spin fluctuations emerges only in the structure factor. As a result, we find that spin fluctuations favor $Δρ>0$, whereas charge flu…
