The optical conductivity sigma(omega) is calculated at finite temperature T for CuO_2 chain clusters within a pd-Hubbard model. Data at T = 300 K for Li_2CuO_2 are reanalyzed within this approach. The relative weights of Zhang-Rice singlet and triplet charge excitations near 2.5 and 4 eV, respectively, depend strongly on T, and a rather dramatic dependence of sigma(omega) on the ratio of the first to second neighbor exchange integrals is predicted. On the basis of these results, information about exchange interactionsfor frustrated edge-shared cuprates can be obtained from T-dependent optical spectra. Our results are also relevant for magnetically weakly coupled wide-gap insulators in general.
A planar Mott insulator with easy plane Néel order can be mapped onto a Gutzwiller-projected spin Hall state. The in-plane substitution of Zn$^{2+}$ and Li$^{+}$ for Cu$^{2+}$ brings zero modes around the spin vacancy. The Gutzwiller projection precludes single particle excitations, however, preserves the zero modes which have a local spin moment for Zn$^{2+}$ and a local charged hole for Li$^{+}$, respectively. While the local spin moment for Zn$^{2+}$ is screened by the long-range spin correlations, the active charge degree of freedom for Li$^{+}$ impurity twists the spin background with lon…
Using low-energy projection of the one-band t-t'-t"-Hubbard model we derive an effective spin-Hamiltonian and its spin-wave expansion to order 1/S. We fit the spin-wave dispersion of several parent compounds to the high-temperature superconducting cuprates: La2CuO4, Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Bi2Sr2YCu2O8. Our accurate quantitative determination of the one-band Hubbard model parameters allows prediction and comparison to experimental results of measurable quantities such as staggered moment, double occupancy density, spin-wave velocity and bimagnon excitation spectrum and density of states, which is discu…
We study experimentally the Raman response of the undoped high-Tc parent compound $YBa_2Cu_3O_6$, and give a unified theory of the two-magnon Raman peak and optical conductivity based on the Hubbard-Holstein model with electron-phonon coupling (EPC). The Hubbard model without EPC can qualitatively account for the experimentally observed resonance of the Raman response, but only the Hubbard-Holstein model (i) reproduces asymmetry of the Raman spectrum, (ii) validates experimental visibility of the two-magnon peak, and (iii) predicts the correct shape and energy of the lower edge of the charge t…
We theoretically analyse the process of charge recombination in the planar Mott-Hubbard insulators with the aim to explain short picosecond-range lifetime of photoexcited carriers, experimentally studied via pump-probe experiments on the undoped cuprates. The recombination mechanism consists of two essential ingredients: the formation of a metastable s-type bound holon-doublon pair, i.e. the Mott exciton, and the decay of such an excitonic state via the multimagnon emission. In spite of the large gap that requires many bosons to be emitted, latter process is fast due to large exchange scale an…
We investigate the excitation spectrum of a two-dimensional resonating valence bond (RVB) state. Treating the $pi$-flux phase with antiferromagnetic correlations as a variational ground state, we recover the long wavelength magnon as an "RVB exciton". However, we find that this excitation does NOT exhaust the entire spectral weight and the high energy spectrum is dominated by fermionic excitations. The latter can be observed directly by inelastic neutron scattering and we predict their characteristic energy scales along different high symmetry directions in the magnetic Brillouin zone. We also…
In the framework of the generalized tight binding method we have calculated the quasiparticle band structure and the spectral functions of the undoped cuprates like $La_2 CuO_4$, $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$ etc. Due to spin fluctuations the in-gap state appears above the top of the valence band in the undoped antiferromagnetic insulator similar to in-gap states induced by hole doping. In the ARPES experiments the in-gap states can be detected as weak low energy satellites.
A systematic inelastic neutron scattering study of the superexchange interaction in three different undoped monolayer cuprates (La_2CuO_4, Nd_2CuO_4 and Pr_2CuO_4) has been performed using conventional triple axis technique. We deduce the in-plane antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange coupling $J$ which actually presents no simple relation versus crystallographic parameters. The absolute spectral weight of the spin susceptibility has been obtained and it is found to be smaller than expected even when quantum corrections of the AF ground state are taken into account.
We study the magnetic excitation spectra of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the $L$-edge from undoped cuprates beyond the fast collision approximation. We analyse the effect of the symmetry breaking ground state on the RIXS process of the Heisenberg model by using a projection procedure. We derive the expressions of the scattering amplitude in both one-magnon and two-magnon excitation channels. Each of them consists of the isotropic and anisotropic contributions. The latter is a new finding and attributed to the long range order of the ground state. The presence of anisotropic te…
We develop a novel self-consistent approach for studying the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) of a hole in the t-J-Holstein model giving perfect agreement with numerically exact Diagrammatic Monte Carlo data at zero temperature for all regimes of electron-phonon coupling. Generalizing the approach to finite temperatures we find that the anomalous temperature dependence of the ARPES in undoped cuprates is explained by cooperative interplay of coupling of the hole to magnetic fluctuations and strong electron-phonon interaction.
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on undoped La2CuO4, indicating polaronic coupling between bosons and charge carriers. Using a shell model, we calculate the electron-phonon coupling and find that it is strong enough to give polarons. We develop an efficient method for calculating ARPES spectra in undoped systems. Using the calculated couplings, we find the width of the phonon side band in good agreement with experiment. We analyze reasons for the observed dependence of the width on the binding energy.
A recent observation of thermal Hall effect of magnetic origin in underdoped cuprates calls for critical re-examination of low-energy magnetic dynamics in undoped antiferromagnetic compound on square lattice, where traditional, renormalized spin-wave theory was believed to work well. Using Holstein-Primakoff boson formalism, we find that magnon-based theories can lead to finite Berry curvature in the magnon band once the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin interaction is taken into account explicitly, but fail to produce non-zero thermal Hall conductivity. Assuming accidental doping by impurities and m…
Understanding similarities and differences between the cuprate and nickelate superconductors is drawing intense current interest. Competing charge orders have been observed recently in the $undoped$ infinite-layer nickelates in sharp contrast to the $undoped$ cuprates which exhibit robust antiferromagnetic insulating ground states. The microscopic mechanisms driving these differences remain unclear. Here, using in-depth first-principles and many-body theory based modeling, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO$_2$, hosts a charge density wave (CDW) ground state with t…
We investigate the magnetic excitations in view of the recent reports suggesting that the spin-wave energy may exhibit a significant dependence on the in-plane strain of a thin film of La$_2$CuO$_4$. The nature of dependence, as we find, can be explained naturally within a two-orbital model based on the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. In particular, as the orbital-splitting energy between the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals increases with compressive strain, the zone-boundary spin-wave energy hardens. However, the hardening persists only until the orbital splitting reaches…
Typical density-functional theory calculations that wrongly predict undoped cuprates to be metallic also predict Cu-O half- and full-breathing phonon energies that are significantly softer than observed, presumably because of weak on-site Coulomb repulsion on the Cu 3d orbitals. We used DFT+U calculations with antiferromagnetic supercells of La$_2$CuO$_4$ to establish correlation between the on-site repulsion strength, tuned via adjusting the value of U, and phonon dispersions. We find that breathing and half-breathing phonons reach experimental values when U is tuned to obtain the correct opt…
The optical conductivity sigma (omega) of undoped YBa2Cu3O6 is studied in detail in the mid-infrared range. Substitutions on all but the Ba site are used to identify the prominent absorption processes at 2800 and 3800 cm^-1. Experimental evidence for bimagnon-plus-phonon absorption is collected. A more critical analysis of the lineshape and the spectral weight reveals the limits of this approach. Although phonon-2-magnon multiple scattering seems to reproduce the lineshape, the necessary coupling is unrealistically large. The strong increase of high frequency spectral weight with increasing te…
In this review article, we show our recent results relating to the undoped (Ce-free) superconductivity in the electron-doped high-Tc cuprates with the so-called T' structure. For an introduction, we briefly mention the characteristics of the electron-doped T'-cuprates, including the reduction annealing, conventional phase diagram and undoped superconductivity. Then, our transport and magnetic results and results relating to the superconducting pairing symmetry of the undoped and underdoped T'-cuprates are shown. Collaborating spectroscopic and nuclear magnetic resonance results are also shown …
The origin of the universal optical conductivity form sigma(omega) ~ (1-e^(omega/T))/omega established in numerical model studies of doped antiferromagnets and consistent with experiments on cuprates near optimal doping is discussed. It is shown that such a behaviour appears quite generally when the single-particle excitations are overdamped and their relaxation follows the marginal Fermi liquid concept. Relation to recent ARPES experiments is also discussed.
We propose several tests of the idea that the electron is fractionalized in the underdoped and undoped cuprates. These include the ac Josephson effect, and tunneling into small superconducting grains in the Coulomb blockade regime. In both cases, we argue that the results are qualitatively modified from the conventional ones if the insulating tunnel barrier is fractionalized. These experiments directly detect the possible existence of the chargon - a charge $e$ spinless boson - in the insulator. The effects described in this paper provide a means to probing whether the undoped cuprate (despite…
We calculate the optical conductivity using several models for unparticle or scale-invariant matter. Within a Gaussian action for unparticles that is gauged with Wilson lines, we find that the conductivity computed from the Kubo formalism with vertex corrections yields no non-trivial deviation from the free-theory result. This result obtains because at the Gaussian level, unparticles are just a superposition of particle fields and hence any transport property must be consistent with free theory. Beyond the Gaussian approach, we adopt the continuous mass formulation of unparticles and calculate…
We present a study of the normal state optical conductivity in the cuprate superconductors using the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid (NAFL) description of the magnetic interaction between their planar quasiparticles. We find that the highly anisotropic scattering rate in different regions of the Brillouin zone, both as a function of frequency and temperature, a benchmark of NAFL theory, leads to an average relaxation rate of the Marginal Fermi Liquid form for overdoped and optimally doped systems, as well as for underdoped systems at high temperatures. We carry out numerical calculations…
We report measurements of the specific heat and the thermal conductivity of the model Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain cuprate Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ at low temperatures. In addition to a nearly isotropic phonon heat transport, we find a quasi one-dimensional excess thermal conductivity along the chain direction, most likely associated with spin excitations (spinons). The spinon energy current is limited mainly by scattering on defects and phonons. Analyzing the specific heat data, the intrachain magnetic exchange $J/k_{B}$ is estimated to be 2650 K.
We consider the magnetic properties of high Tc cuprates from a gauge theory point of view, with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Underdoped cuprates possess certain antiferromagnetic correlations, as evidenced, for example, by different temperature dependence of the Cu and O site NMR relaxation rates, that are not captured well by slave boson mean field theories of the t-J model. We show that the inclusion of gauge fluctuations will remedy the deficiencies of the mean field theories. As a concrete illustration of the gauge-fluctuation restoration of the antiferromangetic correlation and the …
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the T'-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also post-growth reduction annealing is necessary. In the case of thin films, however, well-designed reduction annealing alone without Ce doping can induce superconductivity in the T'-type cuprates. In order to unveil the origin of superconductivity in the Ce-undoped T'-type cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopies on superconducting and non-superconducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=$ 0, 0.15, and 0.19…
We investigate the c-axis optical conductivity and d.c. resistivity of cuprate superconductors in the normal state. Assuming that the interlayer hopping is incoherent we express the conductivity with planar spectral functions obtained (i) from angle-resolved photoemission experiments, (ii) using marginal Fermi liquid ansatz, and (iii) with the finite-temperature Lanczos method for finite two-dimensional systems described by the t-J model. Here in the low doping regime a pseudo-gap opening in the density of states appears to be responsible for a semimetallic-like behavior of the D.C. resistivit…
The c-axis optical conductivity and d.c. resistivity are calculated within the t-J model assuming that the interlayer hopping is incoherent. Use is made of numerical results for spectral functions recently obtained with the finite-temperature Lanczos method for finite two-dimensional systems. In the optimally doped regime we find an anomalous relaxation rate, suggesting a common relaxation mechanism for intra- and interlayer transport. At low doping a pseudo-gap opening in the density of states appears to be responsible for a semimetallic-like behavior of d.c. resistivity.
We have systematically studied the transport properties of the La$_{2-x}$Y$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$(LYCO) films of T'-phase ($0.05\leq x \leq 0.30$). In this nominally "undoped" system, superconductivity was acquired in certain Y doping range ($0.10\leq x \leq 0.20$). Measurements of resistivity, Hall coefficients in normal states and resistive critical field ($H^ρ_{c2}$)in superconducting states of the T'-LYCO films show the similar behavior as the known Ce-doped n-type cuprate superconductors, indicating the intrinsic electron-doping nature. The charge carriers are induced by oxygen deficiency. Non-su…
The optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and the d.c. resistivity $ρ(T)$ within the extended t-J model on a square lattice, as relevant to high-$T_c$ cuprates, are reinvestigated using the exact-diagonalization method for small systems, improved by performing a twisted boundary condition averaging. The influence of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$ is also considered. The behaviour of results at intermediate doping is consistent with a marginal-Fermi-liquid scenario and in the case of $t'=0$ for $ω>T$ follows the power law $σ\propto ω^{-ν}$ with $ν\sim 0.65$ consistent with experiments. At low dop…
We analyze the influence of the dimensionality on the Cu 2p_3/2 core level X-ray photoemission spectra of undoped cuprates. Both exchange splitting and delocalization properties are described within one framework using a multi-band Hubbard model. The spectral intensity is calculated by means of the Mori-Zwanzig projection technique for a CuO_4 plaquette ('zero'-dimensional), an infinite CuO_3 chain (one-dimensional), and an infinite CuO_2 plane (two-dimensional). The results are compared to the spectra of Bi_2CuO_4, Sr_2CuO_3, and Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2. Our analysis allows to distinguish between effec…
Unrevealing local magnetic and electronic correlations in the vicinity of charge carriers is crucial in order to understand rich physical properties in correlated electron systems. Here, using high-energy optical conductivity (up to 35 eV) as a function of temperature and polarization, we observe a surprisingly strong spin polarization of the local spin singlet with enhanced ferromagnetic correlations between Cu spins near the doped holes in lightly hole-doped La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$Cu$_{0.95}$Zn$_{0.05}$O$_{4}$. The changes of the local spin polarization manifest strongly in the temperature-de…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $k$ of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic monolayer cuprate Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ is studied. Analysis of the unusual temperature dependence of $k$ reveals that at low temperatures the heat is carried by phonons, whereas at high temperatures magnetic excitations contribute significantly. Comparison with other insulating layered cuprates suggests that a large magnetic contribution to the thermal conductivity is an intrinsic property of these materials.
We present the first calculation of the electron-energy loss spectrum of infinite one-dimensional undoped CuO_3 chains within a multi-band Hubbard model. The results show good agreement with experimental spectra of Sr_2CuO_3. The main feature in the spectra is found to be due to the formation of Zhang-Rice singlet-like excitations. The q-dependence of these excitations is a consequence of the inner structure of the Zhang-Rice singlet. This makes the inclusion of the oxygen degrees of freedom essential for the description of the relevant excitations. We observe that no enhanced intersite Coulom…
Applying the recently developed spin-charge gauge theory for the pseudogap phase in cuprates, we propose a self-consistent explanation of several peculiar features of the far-infrared in-plane AC conductivity, including a broad peak as a function of frequency and significant anisotropy at low temperatures, along with a similar temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy of DC conductivity in lightly doped cuprates. The anisotropy of the metal-insulator crossover scale is considered to be responsible for these phenomena. The obtained results are in good agreement with experiments. An explicit pro…
The doping and temperature dependent conductivity of electron-doped cuprates is analysed. The variation of kinetic energy with doping is shown to imply that the materials are approximately as strongly correlated as the hole-doped materials. The optical spectrum is fit to a quasiparticle scattering model; while the model fits the optical data well, gross inconsistencies with photoemission data are found, implying the presence of a large, strongly doping dependent Landau parameter.
We begin with an overview of the experimental results for the temperature and doping dependences of the optical-conductivity spectral weight in cuprate superconductors across the whole phase diagram. Then we discuss recent attempts to explain the observed behavior of the spectral weight using reduced and full models with unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ charge-density waves.
A spin-fermion model that captures the charge-transfer properties of Cu-based high critical temperature superconductors is introduced and studied via Monte Carlo simulations. The strong Coulomb repulsion among $d$-electrons in the Cu orbitals is phenomenologically replaced by an exchange coupling between the spins of the itinerant electrons and localized spins at the Cu sites, formally similar to double-exchange models for manganites. This interaction induces a charge-transfer insulator gap in the undoped case (five electrons per unit cell). Adding a small antiferromagnetic Heisenberg coupling…
A major challenge in understanding the cuprate superconductors is to clarify the nature of the fundamental electronic correlations that lead to the pseudogap phenomenon. Here we use ultrashort light pulses to prepare a non-thermal distribution of excitations and capture novel properties that are hidden at equilibrium. Using a broadband (0.5-2 eV) probe we are able to track the dynamics of the dielectric function, unveiling an anomalous decrease of the scattering rate of the charge carriers in a pseudogap-like region of the temperature ($T$) and hole-doping ($p$) phase diagram. In this region, …

The electron doping of undoped high-$T_c$ cuprates via the transfer of charge from manganites (or other oxides) using heterostructure geometries is here theoretically discussed. This possibility is mainly addressed via a detailed analysis of photoemission and diffusion voltage experiments, which locate the Fermi level of manganites above the bottom of the upper Hubbard band of some cuprate parent compounds. A diagram with the relative location of Fermi levels and gaps for several oxides is presented. The procedure discussed here is generic, allowing for the qualitative prediction of the charge…
We discuss some recent results for the properties of doped antiferromagnets, obtained within the planar t-J model mainly by the finite-temperature Lanczos method, with the emphasis on the comparison with experimental results in cuprates. Among the thermodynamic properties the chemical potential and entropy are considered, as well as their relation to the thermoelectric power. At the intermediate doping model results for the optical conductivity, the dynamical spin structure factor and spectral functions reveal a marginal Fermi-liquid behaviour, close to experimental findings. It is shown that …
Calculations are presented for electronic Raman scattering and infrared conductivity in a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ superconductor including the effects of elastic scattering via anisotropic impurities and inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering. A consistent description of experiments on optimally doped Bi-2212 is made possible by considering the effects of correlations on both inelastic and elastic scattering.
Several models of the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprates have been proposed to explain ARPES and STM measurements, which reveal only truncated Fermi pockets instead of a full metallic Fermi surface. We consider the transport properties expected of four physically distinct models, and calculate the thermal and electrical conductivity of the electronic quasiparticles. By proposing transport currents that reflect the close correspondence between quasiparticles on the Fermi pockets in the pseudogap and those near nodes in the superconducting state, we show that measu…
Measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in hole-doped cuprates have shown that phonons acquire chirality in a magnetic field, both in the pseudogap phase and in the Mott insulator state. The microscopic mechanism at play is still unclear. A number of theoretical proposals are being considered, including skew scattering of phonons by various defects, the coupling of phonons to spins, and a state of loop-current order with the appropriate symmetries, but more experimental information is required to constrain theoretical scenarios. Here we present our study of the thermal Hall conductivity …
We investigate the influence of a cyclic spin exchange J_{cyc} on the one- and two-triplet excitations of an undoped two-leg S=1/2 ladder, using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The dispersion of the S=0 two-triplet bound state is dramatically reduced by J_{cyc} due to a repulsion between triplets on neighboring rungs. In (La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} a consistent description of both the spin gap and the S=0 bound state requires $J_{cyc}/J_\perp \approx 0.20-0.27$ and $J/J_{\perp} \approx 1.25-1.35$. With these coupling ratios the recently developed dynamical DMRG yields an excelle…
An improved U(1) slave-boson approach is applied to study the optical conductivity of the two dimensional systems of antiferromagnetically correlated electrons over a wide range of hole doping and temperature. Interplay between the spin and charge degrees of freedom is discussed to explain the origin of the peak-dip-hump structure in the in-plane conductivity of high $T_C$ cuprates. The role of spin fluctuations of short range order(spin singlet pair) is investigated. It is shown that the spin fluctuations of the short range order can cause the mid-infrared hump, by exhibiting a linear increas…
We present an experimental study of the dynamics of holes in the valence bands of 0, 1, and 2 dimensional undoped model cuprates, as expressed via the screening of a Cu 2p core hole. The response depends strongly upon the dimensionality and the details of the Cu-O-Cu network geometry and clearly goes beyond the present theoretical state-of-the-art description within the three-band d-p model.

We report a comparative study of 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spin lattice relaxation rates, T_1^{-1}, on undoped SrCuO_2 and Ca doped Sr_{0.9}Ca_{0.1}CuO_2 spin chain compounds. A temperature independent T_1^{-1} is observed for SrCuO_2 as expected for an S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Surprisingly, we observe an exponential decrease of T_1^{-1} for T < 90,K in the Ca-doped sample evidencing the opening of a spin gap. The data analysis within the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations suggests an impurity driven small alternation of the J_2-exchange c…
The heat carriers responsible for the unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity of the cuprate Mott insulator La$_2$CuO$_4$ were recently shown to be phonons. However, the mechanism by which phonons in cuprates acquire chirality in a magnetic field is still unknown. Here, we report a similar thermal Hall conductivity in two cuprate Mott insulators with significantly different crystal structures and magnetic orders - Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ - and show that two potential mechanisms can be excluded - the scattering of phonons by rare-earth impurities and by structural domains. Ou…
We formulate an effective low energy theory for the fermionic excitations in d-wave superconductors in the presence of periodic vortex lattices. These can be modeled by an effective free Dirac Hamiltonian with renormalized velocities and possibly a small mass term. In the presence of random nonmagnetic impurities this will result in universal (i.e. field and disorder strength independent) thermal and spin conductivities with values different from those occurring in the Meissner state.
We demonstrate that most features ascribed to strong correlation effects in various spectroscopies of the cuprates are captured by a calculation of the self-energy incorporating effects of spin and charge fluctuations. The self energy is calculated over the full doping range of electron-doped cuprates from half filling to the overdoped system. The spectral function reveals four subbands, two widely split incoherent bands representing the remnant of the split Hubbard bands, and two additional coherent, spin- and charge-dressed in-gap bands split by a spin-density wave, which collapses in the ov…
We report systematic, high-precision measurements of the low-T (down to 70 mK) thermal conductivity κof YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}. Careful examinations of the Zn- and hole-doping dependences of the residual thermal conductivity κ_{0}/T, as well as the in-plane anisotropy of κ_{0}/T in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}, indicate a breakdown of the universal thermal conductivity, a notable theoretical prediction for d-wave superconductors. Our results point to an important role of electronic inhomogeneities, that are not considered in the standard pertur…
An improved version of SU(2) slave-boson approach is applied to study the in-plane optical conductivity of the two dimensional systems of high Tc cuprates. We investigate the role of fluctuations of both the phase and amplitude of order parameters on the (Drude) peak-dip-hump structure in the in-plane conductivity as a function of hole doping concentration and temperature. The mid-infrared(MIR) hump in the in-plane optical conductivity is shown to originate from the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of short range(the amplitude fluctuations of spin singlet pairing order parameters), which is…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study on untwinned PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$, which has low resistivity but does not show superconductivity. We have observed a dispersive feature with a band maximum around ($π$/2,$π$/2), indicating that this band is derived from the undoped CuO$_2$ plane. We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO$_3$ chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the prediction of $t-J$ model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates except that …
The effect of sample size and surface roughness on the phonon thermal conductivity $κ_p$ of Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals was studied down to 50 mK. At 0.5 K, $κ_p$ is proportional to $\sqrt{A}$, where $A$ is the cross-sectional area of the sample. This demonstrates that $κ_p$ is dominated by boundary scattering below 0.5 K or so. However, the expected $T^3$ dependence of $κ_p$ is not observed down to 50 mK. Upon roughing the surfaces, the $T^3$ dependence is restored, showing that departures from $T^3$ are due to specular reflection of phonons off the mirror-like sample surfaces. We propose a…
Within the stripe quantum critical point theory for high T_c superconductors, we point out that there is a direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the Raman spectra. In this latter case, we find that the critical charge collective modes can or can not be excited depending on the direction of their wavevector and on the polarization of the incoming and outgoing photons. This indicates a marked distinction between quasiparticles which are strongly and weakly coupled to critical collective modes and provides a direct confirmation that the order assoc…
A key unexplained feature of cuprate superconductors is the upturn in their normal state electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ seen at low temperature inside the pseudogap phase. We examined this issue via measurements of the thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ down to 50 mK and in fields up to 17 T on the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at dopings $p = 0.13$, 0.136, 0.143 and 0.18. At $p$ = 0.136, 0.143, and 0.18, we observe an initial increase of the electronic thermal conductivity $κ_0/T$ as a function of field, as expected in a $d$-wave superconductor. For $p$ = 0.136 and 0.143, further increasing the fie…
