Three instances are discussed in which results produced by chiral perturbation theory can be reliably pushed to high space-like values of transferred momenta: 1. nuclear interactions, 2. nucleon sigma-term and 3. space-like structure of the pion
The experimental discovery that the nucleus is approximately transparent to low energy pions is reviewed. The consequences of this for nuclear deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan interactions are discussed. I argue that low energy nucleus data imply that there is little nuclear enhancement of the pion cloud of a nucleon, and try to interpret this in terms of nucleon-nucleon correlations.
This paper is devoted to the interplay between p-wave, s-wave pion-nucleon/ nucleus interaction and in-medium pion-pion interaction with special emphasis on the role of the nuclear pionic scalar density driving a large amount of chiral symmetry restoration. In particular we show that the $πNN$ coupling constant and the Goldberger-Treiman relation are preserved in the nuclear medium within certain conditions. We also discuss the related problem of the in-medium pion-pion strength function.
We investigate a domain-structured source in the pion interferometry of relativistic nuclear collisions. The source emits coherent pions intermittently with the background of chaotic pions. The coherent pions examined are either of a general nature or of disoriented chiral condensate. Two- and three-pion correlations for the source are shown to agree well with the recent NA44 experimental data.
The saturation properties of the nuclear matter taking pion correlations into account is studied. We construct a Bogoliubov transformations for the pion pair operators and calculate the energy associated with the pion pairs. The pion dispersion relation is investigated. We next study the correlation energy due to one pion exchange in nuclear matter and neutron matter at random phase approximation using the generator coordinate method. The techniques of the charged pion correlations are discussed in the neutron matter calculations. We observe that there is no sign of the pion condensation in th…
We investigate the possibility of measuring the pion dispersion relation in nuclear matter through the anomalous coupling in the reaction γ- γ' π_0. It is shown that this reaction permits the study of pionic modes for space-like momenta. If the pion is softened in nuclear matter due to mixing with the delta-hole state, significant strength for this reaction is expected to move into the space-like region. Competing background processes are evaluated, and it is concluded that useful insight can be obtained experimentally, but only through a difficult exclusive measurement.
A meson exchange model of the $ππ$ interaction which fits free $ππ$ scattering data is used to calculate the interactions of pions in nuclear matter as a function of nuclear density. Polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions results in a marked increase in the s-wave $ππ$ attraction at low energy. The influence of this effect on the nucleon-nucleon interaction is a corresponding increase with density of the $NN$ central potential due to the exchange of two correlated pions, resulting in an $NN$ interaction which fails to saturate. A possible mechanism for restoring the theoretical stabil…
The structure and electroweak properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter are presented in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The pion is described as a bound state of a dressed quark-antiquark pair governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current-light-quark properties we use the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully the properties of hadron in a nuclear medium. We found that the light-quark condensates, the pion decay constant and pion-quark coupling constant decrease with increasing nuclear matter density. We then predict the modifica…
We discuss various aspects of pion physics in the nuclear medium. We first study s-wave pion-nucleus interaction in connection with chiral symmetry restoration and quark condensate in the nuclear medium. We then adress the question of p-wave pion-nucleus interaction and collective pionic modes in nuclei and draw the consequences for in medium $ππ$ correlations especially in the scalar-isoscalar channel. We finally discuss the modification of the rho meson mass spectrum at finite density and/or temperature in connection with relativistic heavy ion collisions.
In this paper a short review of the theoretical problems of the pionic radioactivity is presented. The essential experimental results obtained in the 18 years of existence of the nuclear pionic radioactivity are reviewed. Moreover, using the recent results on the spontaneous fission half lives of the heavy nuclei with Z >= 100 new predictions on the pionic yields in the region of superheavy elements are established.
We present theoretical results for $(γ, π^0 π^0)$ production on nucleons and nuclei in the kinematical region where the scalar isoscalar $ππ$ amplitude is influenced by the $σ$ pole. The final state interaction of the pions modified by the nuclear medium produces a spectacular shift of strength of the two pion invariant mass distribution induced by the moving of the $σ$ pole to lower masses and widths as the nuclear density increases.
Correlations of two like charged pions emitted from a hot and charged spherically expanding nuclear system are investigated. The motion of the pions is described quantum mechanically using the Klein-Gordon equation which includes Coulomb field and pion absorption. Flow modifies the radial distribution of the source function and rescales the pion wave functions. The radii extracted from the correlation functions are calculated in sideward and outward direction as a function of the pair momentum. Comparison with recent measurements at SIS and AGS energies is made.
We discuss a self-consistent method to calculate the properties of cold asymmetric nuclear matter which is dressed with isoscalar scalar pion condensates. The nucleon-nucleon interaction is mediated by these pion pairs, omega- and rho- mesons. The parameters of these interactions are evaluated self-consistently using the saturation properties of nuclear matter like binding energy, pressure, compressibility and symmetry energy. The computed equation of state of pure neutron matter (PNM) is used to calculate mass and radius of a pure neutron star.
We consider two methods to find the effective parameters of the pion traversing a nuclear medium. One is the first order chiral perturbation theoretic evaluation of the pion pole contribution to the two-point function of the axial-vector current. The other is the exact, first order virial expansion of the pion self-energy. We find that, although the results of chiral perturbation theory are not valid at normal nuclear density, those from the virial expansion may be reliable at such density. The latter predicts both the mass-shift and the in-medium decay width of the pion to be small, of about …
The universal curve $σ/A$ of nuclear photoabsorption is investigated within a Fermi gas model of nuclear matter. An energy range from pion threshold up to 400 MeV is considered. The interactions between nucleon, pion, $Δ$-isobar and photon are considered in the non-relativistic approximation with corrections of the order $1/M$ taken into account with respect to proton mass. Analytical expressions are obtained, in which the influence of nuclear correlations, two-nucleon contributions and relativistic corrections is studied explicitely. An extension of the model calculation to nucleon knock-out …
We evaluate the pion and isobar propagators in cold nuclear matter self consistently applying a covariant form of the isobar-hole model. Migdal's vertex correction effects are considered systematically in the absence of phenomenological soft form factors. Saturated nuclear matter is modeled by scalar and vector mean fields for the nucleon. It is shown that the short-range dressing of the pi N Delta vertex has a significant effect on the pion and isobar properties. Using realistic parameters sets we predict a downward shift of about 50 MeV for the Delta resonance at nuclear saturation density. …
The s-wave isoscalar amplitude for pion-pion scattering in a nuclear medium is evaluated using a nonperturbative unitary coupled channels method and the standard chiral Lagrangians. The method has proved successful to describe the pion-pion properties in the scalar isoscalar channel up to 1.2 GeV giving rise to poles in the t matrix for the f0(980) and the sigma. The extension of the method to the nuclear medium implies not only the renormalization of the pions in the medium, but also the introduction of interaction terms related to contact terms in the pion-nucleon to pion-pion-nucleon intera…
Three recent experiments, which looked at pionic effects in nuclei have concluded that there are no excess pions. This puts into serious question the conventional meson-exchange picture of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Based on arguments of partial restoration of chiral symmetry with density we propose a resolution to this problem.
We argue that, in contrast to the non-relativistic approach, a relativistic evaluation of the nucleon--hole and delta-isobar--nucleon hole contributions to the pion self-energy incorporates the s-wave scattering, which requires a more accurate evaluation. Therefore relativistic approach containing only these diagrams does not describe appropriately the pion self-energy in isospin symmetric nuclear matter. We conclude that, a correct relativistic approach to the pion self-energy should involve a more sophisticated calculation in order to satisfy the known experimental results on the near-thresh…
Two- and three-pion correlation functions are investigated for a source that is not fully chaotic. Various models are examined to describe the source. The chaoticity and weight factor are evaluated in each model as measures of the strength of correlations and compared to experimental results. A new measure of three-pion correlation is also suggested.
The nuclear sigma term is calculated including the nuclear matrix element of the derivative of the NN interaction with respect to the quark mass, $m_q\frac{\partial V_{NN}}{\partial m_q}$. The NN potential is evaluated in the skyrmion-skyrmion picture within the quantized product ansatz. The contribution of the NN potential to the nuclear sigma term provides repulsion to the pion-nucleus interaction. The strength of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential is estimated including such contribution. The results are consistent with the analysis of the experimental data.
Conventional theories of nuclear interactions predict a net increase in the distribution of virtual pions in nuclei relative to free nucleons. Analysis of data from several nuclear experiments has led to claims of evidence against such a pion excess. These conclusions are usually based on a collective theory (RPA) of the pions, which may be inadequate. The issue is the energy dependence of the nuclear response, which differs for theories with strong NN correlations from the RPA predictions. In the present paper, information about the energy dependence is extracted from sum rules, which are cal…
Two- and three-pion correlations are investigated in cases when disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) occurs. A chaoticity and weight factor are used as measures of two- and three-pion correlations, and the various models for DCC are investigated. Some models are found to yield the chaoticity and weight factor in a reasonable agreement with recent experimental data.
We utilize precise weak interaction experiments on atomic muon capture and beta decay in the A = 3 nuclei, and take into account the effects of nuclear "anomalous thresholds" to extract the pseudoscalar pi-^3He-^3H coupling parameter, G^{eff}(m_π^2) = 45.8+- 2.4. This is an order of magnitude improvement in precision over that from the use of pion-nuclear scattering data and dispersion relations.
We put forward a formalism to calculate the relativistic particle - hole and delta - hole excitation polarization insertion for pion propagator by using the particle - hole - antiparticle representation of nucleon and delta propagators in nuclear matter. The real and the imaginary part of the polarization insertion and the dispersion relation for pion propagator are calculated numerically. We find that the short range correlation enhances the delta - hole excitation but suppresses the particle - hole excitation, it also suppresses the pion condensation. We find that the effect of the short ran…
We show that a hydrodynamical model with continuous particle emission instead of sudden freeze out can explain both the strange particle abundances and pion abundance from NA35 without extra assumption (e.g., sequential freeze out, modified equation of state, sudden plasma hadronization,...). In this scenario, the observation of a larger pion abundance is natural and does not imply a higher initial entropy and early plasma phase.
Dynamics of the nuclear fragmentations and the charge exchange reactions in pion-nucleus collisions near the $Δ$(1232) resonance energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics (LQMD) transport model. An isospin, momentum and density-dependent pion-nucleon potential is implemented in the model, which influences the pion dynamics, in particular the kinetic energy spectra, but weakly impacts the fragmentation mechanism. The absorption process in pion-nucleon collisions to form the $Δ$(1232) resonance dominates the heating mechanism of target nucleus. The excitation e…
The s-wave correlated $π$-$π$ strength distribution in cold nuclear matter is investigated. The in-medium single pions are renormalized by means of the usual p-wave couplings to nucleons and $Δ$'s. Two groups of models for the $π$-$π$ interaction are studied. The first one uses phenomenological models which reproduce the phase shifts but do not respect the soft-pion theorems. With increasing density a strong accumulation of strength in the subhreshold region is observed. Slightly above saturation density there even occurs an instability with respect to s-wave $π$-$π$ pair condensation. These e…
We study the modification of the nucleon nucleon interaction in a nuclear medium in the scalar isoscalar channel, mediated by the exchange of two correlated ($σ$ channel) or uncorrelated pions. For this purpose we use a standard approach for the renormalization of pions in nuclei. The corrections obtained for the $NN$ interaction in the medium in this channel are of the order of 20% of the free one in average, and the consideration of short range correlations plays an important role in providing these moderate changes. Yet, the corrections are sizable enough to suggest further studies of the s…
Within the framework of semiclassical Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model, we investigated the effects of symmetry energy on the sub-threshold pion using the isospin MDI interaction with the stiff and soft symmetry energies in the central collision of $^{48}$Ca + $^{48}$Ca at the incident beam energies of 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 MeV/nucleon, respectively. We find that the ratio of $π^{-}/π^{+}$ of sub-threshold charged pion production is greatly sensitive to the symmetry energy, particularly around 100 MeV/nucleon energies. Large sensitivity of sub-threshold charged pion produ…
The pion multiplicity per participating nucleon in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at the energies 2-15 A GeV is significantly smaller than in nucleon-nucleon interactions at the same collision energy. This effect of pion suppression is argued to appear due to the evolution of the system produced at the early stage of heavy-ion collisions towards a local thermodynamic equilibrium and further isentropic expansion.
We present theoretical results for (gamma,pi0 pi0) and (gamma,pi+- pi0) production on nucleons and nuclei in the kinematical region where the scalar isoscalar pi pi amplitude is influenced by the sigma pole. The final state interaction of the pions modified by the nuclear medium produces a spectacular shift of strength of the pi0 pi0 invariant mass distribution induced by the moving of the sigma pole to lower masses and widths as the nuclear density increases.
The one-pion exchange current corrections to isoscalar and isovector magnetic moments of double-closed shell nuclei plus and minus one nucleon with $A=15,17,39$ and 41 have been studied in the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory and compared with previous relativistic and non-relativistic results. It has been found that the one-pion exchange current gives a negligible contribution to the isoscalar magnetic moments but a significant correction to the isovector ones. However, the one-pion exchange current doesn't improve the description of nuclear isovector magnetic moments for the concerned nu…
Pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung offers a possibility of measuring the structure functions of pion-Compton scattering from a study of the small-momentum-transfer region where the bremsstrahlung reaction is dominated by the single-photon-exchange mechanism. The corresponding cross-section distribution is characterized by a sharp peak at small momentum transfers. But there is also a hadronic contribution which is smooth and constitutes an undesired background. In this communication the modification of the single-photon exchange amplitude by multiple-Coulomb scattering is investigated as well as the C…
We have recently studied in the delta-resonance--nucleon-hole model the dependence of the pion spectral function in hot dense asymmetric nuclear matter on the charge of the pion due to the pion p-wave interaction in nuclear medium. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect enhances the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions in neutron-rich nuclear matter, and the effect is comparable to that due to the uncertainties in the theoretically predicted stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. This effect is, however, reversed if we also take into account the s…
We evaluate the in-medium spectral functions for pions, nucleon and isobar resonances in a self consistent and covariant manner. The calculations are based on a recently developed formulation which leads to predictions in terms of the pion-nucleon scattering phase shifts and a set of Migdal parameters describing important short range correlation effects. We do not observe significant softening of pion modes if we insist on reasonable isobar resonance properties but predict a considerable broadening of the N(1440) and N(1520) resonances in nuclear matter. Contrasted results are obtained for the…
We present a relativistic and cross-section factorized framework for computing nuclear transparencies extracted from A(γ,πN) reactions at intermediate energies. The proposed quantummechanical model adopts a relativistic extension to the multiple-scattering Glauber approximation to account for the final state interactions of the ejected nucleon and pion. The theoretical predictions are compared against the experimental ^4He(γ,p π^-) data from Jefferson Lab. For those data, our results show no conclusive evidence for the onset of mechanisms related to color transparency.
The solutions to the zero-sound frequency equation and pion dispersion equation are considered for the different values of the parameters of the effective particle-hole interaction. The branches of solutions, responsible for the long-wave instability [Pomeranchuk] of the nuclear matter ω_P(k) are presented for the both equations. It is shown that in the pion dispersion equation the solutions ω_P(k) result in the instability not only for values of the spin-isospin constant g'\leq -1/2, violating stability criteria, but for all g' < g'_p (|g'_p|\ll 1 and g'_p < 0). At g' > g'_p the branches ω_P(…
The 1S0 pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei is investigated using the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at the N3LO order in the two-body sector, and the N2LO order in the three-body sector. To include realistic nuclear forces in RHB (Relativistic Hartree Bolgoliubov) calculations we rely on a separable form of the pairing interaction adjusted to the bare nuclear force. The separable pairing force is applied to the analysis of pairing properties for several isotopic and isotonic chains of spherical nuclei.
A survey is given of the evolution from Yukawa's early work, via the understanding of the pion as a Nambu-Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in QCD, to modern developments in the theory of the nucleus based on the chiral effective field theory representing QCD in its low-energy limit.
Three-pion interferometry is investigated for new information on the space-time structure of the pion source created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The two- and three-pion correlations are numerically computed for incoherent source functions based on the Bjorken hydrodynamical model, over a wide range of the kinematic variables. New information provided by three-pion interferometry, different from that provided by two-pion interferometry, should appear in the phases of the Fourier transform of the source function. Variables are identified that would be sensitive to the phases and …
In the present paper we investigate a method to describe low-energy scattering events of pions and nuclei within a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model. Implementing different scenarios of medium modifications, we studied the mean free path of pions in nuclear matter at low momenta and compared pion absorption simulations to data. Pursuing these studies we have shown, that also in a regime of a long pionic wave length the semi-classical BUU model still generates reasonable results. We present results on pi-induced events in the regime of 10 MeV < Tkin < 130 MeV and photo-induced p…
We study the mechanism of the $γ$ and $π^0$ enhancement at large transverse momenta in proton-nucleus collisions. A proposed mechanism suggests an increase in the width of the transverse momentum distribution of partons in a semihard process.
The particle-hole and Delta -hole excitations are well-known elementary excitation modes for the pion propagator in nuclear matter. But, the excitation also involves antiparticles, namely, nucleon-antinucleon, anti-Delta-nucleon and Delta-antinucleon excitations. These are important for high-energy momentum as well, and have not been studied before, to our knowledge. In this paper, we give both the formulas and the numerical calculations for the real and the imaginary parts of these excitations.
We discuss partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium, which is realized as an effective reduction of the quark condensate in nuclear medium. We derive the in-medium Weinberg-Tomozawa relation. We also give a brief calculation of the in-medium quark condensate based on chiral perturbation theory. We conclude that the density dependence of the quark condensate beyond the linear density comes from the vertex correction of the chiral field insertion and nucleon correlations.
We use a recently improved version of the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at next-to-next-to-leading order to calculate the $^1S_0$ pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The pairing potential consists of the long-range one- and two-pion exchange terms and two short-distance NN-contact couplings. We find that the inclusion of the two-pion exchange at next-to-next-to-leading order reduces substantially the cut-off dependence of the $^1S_0$ pairing gap determined by solving a regularised BCS equation. Our results are close to those obtained with the universal low-momentum nucleon-nucl…
Using the two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory, we calculate the momentum and density dependent isovector nuclear spin-orbit strength $V_{ls}(p,k_f)$. This quantity is derived from the spin-dependent part of the interaction energy $Σ_{spin} = {i\over 2} \vec σ\cdot (\vec q \times\vec p)[U_{ls}(p,k_f)- V_{ls}(p,k_f)τ_3 δ] $ of a nucleon scattering off weakly inhomogeneous isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that iterated $1π$-exchange generates at saturation density, $k_{f0}=272.7 $MeV, an isovector nuclear spin-orbit strength at $p=0$ of $V_{ls}(0,k_{f0}) \simeq 50$ MeVf…
We derive the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter in a relativistic theory with $σ$ and $ω$ exchange. We take a chiral version of this model which insures all the chiral constraints. Going beyond the mean field approach we introduce the effects of the pion loops. For the parameters of the model, in order to fix those linked to pion exchange, we exploit the most recent information on the short-range part of the spin-isospin interaction. For those linked to the scalar meson exchange we make use of an analysis of lattice results on the nucleon mass evolution with the quark mass. With th…
We carefully calculate the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to two pion exchange processes by properly evaluating the corresponding Feynman diagrams. In the estimation, we have made no approximation, and instead, we carry out the numerical integrations of three Feynman parameters. It is found that the two pion exchange potential gives rise to the attractive force which corresponds to the effective scalar meson with its mass of $m_s\simeq 4.7 m_π$ and its strength of ${g_s^2\over 4π}\simeq 1.45 $. There is a strong isospin dependence of $(\bmτ_1\cdot \bmτ_2)^2 $ which cannot be simulated by the …
Using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory we calculate the density-dependent complex-valued spin-orbit coupling strength $U_{Σls}(k_f)+ i W_{Σls}(k_f)$ of a $Σ$ hyperon in the nuclear medium. The leading long-range $ΣN$ interaction arises from iterated one-pion exchange with a $Λ$ or a $Σ$ hyperon in the intermediate state. We find from this unique long-range dynamics a sizeable ``wrong-sign'' spin-orbit coupling strength of $U_{Σls}(k_{f0}) \simeq -20$ MeVfm$^2$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_0 = 0.16 $fm$^{-3}$. The strong $ΣN\to ΛN$ conversion process contributes at the same time an imagi…
We present a relativistic calculation of the saturation properties of nuclear matter which contains the correlation energy. Pion loops are incorporated on top of a relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approach based on a chiral theory. It includes the effect of nucleon structure through its response to the background chiral invariant scalar field. All the parameters which enter the RHF calculation are fixed or strongly constrained by hadron phenomenology or lattice data. The new input for the correlation energy is the Landau-Migdal parameter g? governing the short-range part of the spin-isospin int…
Positive pion electroproduction from the deuteron near threshold has been considered within an approach based on the unitary transformation method. The gauge independence of the treatment is provided by using an explicitly gauge independent expression for the reaction amplitude. The results of calculations for kinematics of the experiments on forward-angle $π^+$ meson electroproduction accomplished at Saclay and Jefferson Laboratory are discussed and compared with those given by the impulse approximation. It is shown that the observed behaviour of the cross sections is in accordance with the c…
As the residual interaction of quantum chromodynamics in low-energy region, the nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential can only be exactly described by the model picture now. In the Bonn potential, one of the most well-known NN interaction models, the nucleons interact with each other through exchanging the pion and several heavier mesons, where the pion plays an essential role. It provides a partial contribution of tensor force in the intermediate-range region and the main component in the long-range region in NN potential. However, it is very difficult to be treated in the nuclear many-body system d…
In this paper we consider instability of nuclear matter which takes place when the frequencies of the collective excitations turn to zero. We investigate collective excitations with pion quantum numbers J^π=0^-. We study the dependence of zero-frequency solutions of the pion dispersion equation on the value of the spin-isospin quasiparticle interaction G'. The solutions of the pion dispersion equation describe the different types of the excitations in the matter, ω_i(k). At the critical density ρ=ρ_c one of solutions of the definite type turns to zero: ω_{i0}(k_c)=0. When ρ>ρ_c, the excitation…
We discuss medium modifications of the unitarized pion-pion interaction in the nuclear medium. We incorporate both the effects of chiral symmetry restoration and the influence of collective nuclear pionic modes originating from the p-wave coupling of the pion to delta-hole configurations. We show in particular that the dropping of the sigma meson mass significantly enhances the low energy structure created by the in-medium collective pionic modes.
Large momentum transfer reactions such as pion production represent the frontier of Chiral Perturbation Theory and must be understood before more complex reactions can be considered. Pion production is also interesting in its own right, one application being the hadronic extraction of a charge symmetry breaking parameter: the contribution of the down-up quark mass difference to the neutron-proton mass difference. This dissertation reports on two primary projects: (1) a calculation of the charge symmetry breaking forward-backward asymmetry of the differential cross section of the n p -> d pi^0 …
We show the necessity of two-nucleon axial currents and associated pion emission/ absorption operators for the partial conservation of the axial current (PCAC) nuclear matrix elements with arbitrary nuclear dynamics described by a nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation. As examples we construct such nonrelativistic axial two-body currents in the linear- and heterotic (g_A = 1.26) sigma models, with an optional isoscalar vector (omega) meson exchange. The nuclear matrix elements obey PCAC only if the nuclear wave functions used in the calculation are solutions to the Schroedinger equation with t…
Due to large pi N --> Delta cross section a pion acquires a large width in nuclear matter. Therefore, a Delta-resonance decaying in the nuclear medium can produce far off-shell pions, which will gradually lose their virtuality while propagating to the vacuum. To describe such off-shell dynamics, we implemented a pion spectral function for finite nuclear matter density -- calculated on the basis of the Delta-hole model -- in the BUU transport approach. The pion off-shell dynamics leads to an enhancement of the low-p_t pion yields in the collisions of Au+Au at 1 A GeV.
Spin-isospin response in exotic nuclear systems is investigated. It is found that in some nuclei excitations with pionic quantum numbers (0-, 1+, 2-, ...) appear at very low energies with large transition probabilities, which is an indication of the vicinity of the onset of pion condensation. As an example, 2- components of the spin-dipole resonance in 78-Ni and 132-Sn are considered. The existence of such modes points out to the necessity of taking into account their coupling to other elementary modes of excitation, e.g. single-quasiparticle ones. This coupling is introduced in the theory for…
We calculate the nuclear energy density functional relevant for N=Z even-even nuclei in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory. The calculation includes the one-pion exchange Fock diagram and the iterated one-pion exchange Hartree and Fock diagrams. From these few leading order contributions in the small momentum expansion one obtains already a very good equation of state of isospin symmetric nuclear matter. We find that in the region below nuclear matter saturation density the effective nucleon mass $\widetilde M^*(ρ)$ deviates by at most 15% from its free space value $M$, wit…
