We study the evolution of a perfect--fluid sphere coupled to a scalar radiation field. By ensuring a Ricci invariant regularity as a conformally flat spacetime at the central world line we find that the fluid coupled to the scalar field satisfies the equation of state $ρ_c+3p_c=$ constant at the center of the sphere, where the energy $ρ_c$ density and the pressure $p_c$ do not necessarily contain the scalar field contribution. The fluid can be interpreted as anisotropic and radiant because of the scalar field, but it becomes perfect and non radiative at the center of the sphere. These results are being currently considered to build up a numerical relativistic hydrodynamic solver.
We study the dynamics near the central singularity in spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field toward Schwarzschild black hole formation. The equations of motion take different simplified forms in the early and late stages of the singularity curve. We report some fine structures of the analytic solutions and universal features for the metric functions and matter near the singularity.
The gravitational strength of the central singularity in spherically symmetric space-times is investigated. Necessary conditions for the singularity to be gravitationally weak are derived and it is shown that these are violated in a wide variety of circumstances. These conditions allow conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the singularity without having to integrate the geodesic equations. In particular, any geodesic with a non-zero amount of angular momentum which impinges on the singularity terminates in a strong curvature singularity.
We examine here the nature of the central singularity forming in the spherically symmetric collapse of a dust cloud and it is shown that this is always a strong curvature singularity where gravitational tidal forces diverge powerfully. An important consequence is that the nature of the naked singularity forming in the dust collapse turns out to be stable against the perturbations in the initial data from which the collapse commences.
We study spherical scalar collapse toward a black hole formation and examine the asymptotic dynamics near the central singularity of the formed black hole. It is found that, in the vicinity of the singularity, due to the strong backreaction of a scalar field on the geometry, the mass function inflates and the Kretschmann scalar grows faster than in the Schwarzschild geometry. In collapse, the Misner-Sharp mass is a locally conserved quantity, not providing information on the black hole mass that is measured at asymptotically flat regions.
We give a characterization of the central shell-focusing curvature singularity that can form in the spherical gravitational collapse of a bounded matter distribution obeying the dominant energy condition. This characterization is based on the limiting behaviour of the mass function in the neighbourhood of the singularity. Depending on the rate of growth of the mass as a function of the area radius R, the singularity may be either covered or naked. The singularity is naked if this growth rate is slower than R, covered if it is faster than R, and either naked or covered if the growth rate is sam…
Associated to the unique 4-parametric subgroup of translations, normal to the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group, there exists a generator of the temporal translation asymptotic symmetry. Such a descriptor of the motion along the conformal orbit near null infinity is propagated to finite regions. This allows us to observe the global energy conservation even in extreme situations near the critical behavior of the massless scalar field collapse in spherical symmetry.
We initiate a systematic implementation of the spectral domain decomposition technique with the Galerkin-Collocation (GC) method in situations of interest such as the spherical collapse of a scalar field in the characteristic formulation. We discuss the transmission conditions at the interface of contiguous subdomains that are crucial for the domain decomposition technique for hyperbolic problems. We implemented codes with an arbitrary number of subdomains, and after validating them, we applied to the problem of critical collapse. With a modest resolution, we obtain the Choptuik's scaling law …
Covariant equations characterizing the strength of a singularity in spherical symmetry are derived and several models are investigated. The difference between central and non-central singularities is emphasised. A slight modification to the definition of singularity strength is suggested. The gravitational weakness of shell crossing singularities in collapsing spherical dust is proven for timelike geodesics, closing a gap in the proof.
We analyze here the structure of non-radial nonspacelike geodesics terminating in the past at a naked singularity formed as the end state of inhomogeneous dust collapse. The spectrum of outgoing nonspacelike null geodesics is examined analytically. The local and global visibility of the singularity is also examined by integrating numerically the null geodesics equations. The possible implications of existence of such families towards the appearance of the star in late stages of gravitational collapse are considered. It is seen that the outgoing non-radial geodesics give an appearance to the na…
We study the spherically symmetric collapse of a perfect fluid using area-radial coordinates. We show that analytic mass functions describe a static regular centre in these coordinates. In this case, a central singularity can not be realized without an infinite discontinuity in the central density. We construct mass functions involving fluid dynamics at the centre and investigate the relationship between those and the nature of the singularities.
A massive, charged, spherical central body can be neutralized by attracting particles of opposite charge. We calculate the time it takes to neutralize these central bodies using classical mechanics, special relativistic mechanics, and finally, the "forced" trajectories of general relativity. While we can compare the classical and (special) relativistic times, and find, predictably, that the special relativistic neutralization time is longer, a comparison of these times with the general relativistic result is not as directly possible. We offer the final calculation as a demonstration of dynamic…
Spherical vacuum and scalar collapse for the Starobinsky R^2 model is simulated. Obtained by considering the quantum-gravitational effects, this model would admit some cases of singularity-free cosmological spacetimes. It is found, however, that in vacuum and scalar collapse, when f' or the physical scalar field is strong enough, a black hole including a central singularity can be formed. In addition, near the central singularity, gravity dominates the repulsion from the potential, so that in some circumstances the Ricci scalar is pushed to infinity by gravity. Therefore, the semiclassical eff…
It is shown that, for spherically symmetric static backgrounds, a simple reduced Dirac equation can be obtained by using the Cartesian tetrad gauge in Cartesian holonomic coordinates. This equation is manifestly covariant under rotations so that the spherical coordinates can be separated in terms of angular spinors like in special relativity, obtaining a pair of radial equations and a specific form of the radial scalar product. As an example, we analytically solve the anti-de Sitter oscillator giving the formula of the energy levels and the form of the corresponding eigenspinors.
In this paper, we initiate the study of the asymptotically AdS initial-boundary value problem for the Einstein-massless Vlasov system with $Λ<0$ in spherical symmetry. We will establish the existence and uniqueness of a maximal future development for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem in the case when smooth initial data are prescribed on a future light cone $\mathcal{C}^{+}$ emanating from a point at $\{r=0\}$ and a reflecting boundary condition is imposed on conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}$. We will then prove a number of continuation criteria for smooth solutions of the spher…
In this work the junction conditions between the exterior Reissner-Nordstrom-Vaidya space-time with the interior quasi-spherical Szekeres space-time have been studied for analyzing gravitational collapse in the presence of a magneto-hydrodynamic fluid undergoing dissipation in the form of heat flow. We have discussed about the apparent horizon and have evaluated the time difference between the formation of apparent horizon and central singularity.
A spherical dust cloud which is initially at rest and which has a monotonously decaying density profile collapses and forms a shell-focussing singularity. Provided the density profile is not too flat, meaning that its second radial derivative is negative at the center, this singularity is visible to local, and sometimes even to global observers. According to the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, such naked singularities should be unstable under generic, nonspherical perturbations of the initial data or when more realistic matter models are considered. In an attempt to gain some understandin…
The present work investigates the gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in $f(R)$ gravity models. For a general $f(R)$ theory, it is shown analytically that a collapse is quite possible. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity of shell focusing type. The possibility of the formation of an apparent horizon hiding the central singularity depends on the initial conditions.
In the paper we analyze the quantum-mechanical equivalence of the metrics of a centrally symmetric uncharged gravitational field. We consider the Schwarzschild metrics in the spherical, isotropic and harmonic coordinates, and the Eddington-Finkelstein, Painleve-Gullstrand, Lemaitre-Finkelstein, Kruskal metrics. The scope of the analysis includes domains of the wave functions of Dirac's equation, hermiticity of Hamiltonians, and the possibility of existence of stationary bound states of spin-half particles. The constraint on the domain of the wave functions of the Hamiltonian in a Schwarzschild…
We investigate quasi-free Hadamard states defined via characteristic initial data on null cones centred at the axis of symmetry in spherically symmetric space-times. We characterize the necessary singular behaviour of null boundary two-point functions such that one can define non-linear observables at this null boundary and give formulas for the calculation of these observables. These results extend earlier characterizations of null boundary states defining Hadamard states in the bulk of the null cone. As an application of our derived formulas, we consider their implications for the semi-class…
In this work, inspired by the symmetron model, we analyse the evolution of spherical domain walls by considering specific potentials that ensure symmetry breaking and the occurrence of degenerate vacua that are necessary for the formation of domain walls. By considering a simple analytical model of spherical domain wall collapse in vacuum, it is shown that this model fits the more accurate numerical results very well until full collapse, after which oscillations and scalar radiation take place. Furthermore, we explore the effect of a central non-relativistic matter lump on the evolution of a s…
Given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, we provide a criterion, in terms of the dimensionless size and dimensionless renormalized mass content of an annular region of the data, for the formation of a future trapped surface. This corresponds to an extension of Christodoulou's classical criterion by the inclusion of the cosmological term.
We investigate collapse of a spherical cloud of counter-rotating particles. An explicit solution is given using an elliptic integral. If the specific angular momentum $L(r)=O(r^2)$ at $r\to 0$, no central singularity occurs. With $L(r)$ like that, there is a finite region around the center that bounces. On the other hand, if the order of $L(r)$ is higher than that, a central singularity occurs. In marginally bound collapse with $L(r)=4F(r)$, a naked singularity occurs, where $F(r)$ is the Misner-Sharp mass. The solution for this case is expressed by elementary functions. For $ 4 <L/F<\infty$ a…
We estimate the changes in solar system tests of general relativity when "dark energy" arises from a Weyl scaling invariant action, using the modified Schwarzschild-like spherically symmetric solution obtained in this case by Adler and Ramazano\vglu. We show that the standard results of general relativity are modified by amounts that are far below current experimental errors. However, because the metric is not conformally flat when the central mass $M$ vanishes, there is a contribution to light deflection proportional to the cosmological constant $Λ$, with opposite sign to the one proportional…
We introduce a physically important object, called the horizon function, in the study of geodesic collapse. It is closely related to the stellar characteristics and satisfies a simple Riccati equation. This equation is integrated and all of its solutions are found in terms of some generating functions. Previous solutions are regained and further investigated.
Published in 1999, Christodoulou proved that the naked singularities of a self-gravitating scalar field are not stable in spherical symmetry and therefore the cosmic censorship conjecture is true in this context. The original proof is by contradiction and sharp estimates are obtained strictly depending on spherical symmetry. In this paper, appropriate a priori estimates for the solution are obtained. These estimates are more relaxed but sufficient for giving another robust argument in proving the instability, in particular not by contradiction. In another related paper, we are able to prove in…
In this paper, under spherical symmetry we prove a trapped surface formation criterion for the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. We generalize an approach introduced by Christodoulou for studying the Einstein-scalar field. In appendix, with double null foliation we also reprove Christodoulou's result and for Minkowskian incoming characteristic initial data, we improve Christodoulou's bound.
