The leitmotif of these Notes is the idea of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) and the relationship between VOAs and elliptic functions and modular forms. This is to some extent analogous to the relationship between a finite group and its irreducible characters; the algebraic structure determines a set of numerical invariants, and arithmetic properties of the invariants provides feedback in the form of restrictions on the algebraic structure. One of the main points of these Notes is to explain how this works, and to give some reasonably interesting examples.
This paper consists of two parts: (1) Using a Z[1/2]-form of Virasoro vertex operator algebra L(1/2,0) with central charge 1/2, we obtain a modular vertex operator algebra over any field F of finite characteristic different from 2. We determine the generators and classify the irreducible modules for this vertex operator algebra. (2) We investigate modular framed vertex operator algebras. In particular, the rationality of modular framed vertex operator algebras is established. For a modular code vertex operator algebra, the irreducible modules are constructed and classified. Moreover, a Z[1/2]-…
A vertex operator algebra of lattice type ADE has a standard integral form which extends a Chevalley basis for its degree 1 Lie algebra. This integral form may be used to define a vertex algebra over a commutative ring $R$ and to get a Chevalley group over $R$ of the same type, acting as automorphisms of this vertex algebra. We define vertex algebras of types BCFG over a commutative ring and certain reduced VAs, then get analogous results about automorphism groups. In characteristics 2 and 3, there are exceptionally large automorphism groups. A covering algebra idea of Frohardt and Griess for …
Let $V$ be a vertex operator superalgebra with the natural order 2 automorphism $σ$. Under suitable conditions on $V$, the $σ$-fixed subspace $V_{\bar 0}$ is a vertex operator algebra and the category $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ of $V_{\bar 0}$-modules is modular tensor category. In this paper, we prove that $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ is a fermionic modular tensor category and the Müger centralizer $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$ of the fermion in $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ is generated by the irreducible $V_{\bar 0}$-submodules of the $V$-modules. In particular, $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$ is a super-modular tensor category and $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$…
Using techniques from the theory of mock modular forms and harmonic Maass forms, especially Weierstrass mock modular forms, we establish several dimension formulas for certain strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebras, complementing previous work by van Ekeren, Möller, and Scheithauer.
This is the first part in a two-part series of papers constructing a unitary structure for the modular tensor category (MTC) associated to a unitary rational vertex operator algebra (VOA).
In this paper we study the integral form of the lattice vertex algebra $V_L$. We show that divided powers of general vertex operators preserve the integral lattice spanned by Schur functions indexed by partition-valued functions. We also show that the Garland operators, counterparts of divided powers of Heisenberg elements in affine Lie algebras, also preserve the integral form. These construe analogs of the Kostant $\mathbb Z$-forms for the enveloping algebras of simple Lie algebras and the algebraic affine Lie groups in the situation of the lattice vertex algebras.
In this note we give an account of recent progress on the construction of holomorphic vertex algebras as cyclic orbifolds as well as related topics in lattices and modular categories. We present a novel computation of the Schur indicator of a lattice involution orbifold using finite Heisenberg groups and discriminant forms.
We present five open problems in the theory of vertex rings. They cover a variety of different areas of research where vertex rings have been, or are threatening to be, relevant. They have also been chosen because I personally find them interesting, and because I think each of them has a chance (the title of the paper notwithstanding!) of being solved. In each case we give some explanatory background and motivation, sometimes including proofs of special cases. Beyond vertex rings per se, the topics covered include connections to real Lie theory, formal group laws, modular linear differential e…
In this paper, extensions of nonunitary rational Virasoro vertex operator algebras corresponding to some exceptional modular invariants are constructed. The uniqueness of these extensions is also established.
The trace functions for the Parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $\g$ and any positive integer $k$ are studied and an explicit modular transformation formula of the trace functions is obtained.
Unitary vertex operator algebras are introduced and studied. It is proved that most well-known rational vertex operator algebras are unitary. The classification of unitary vertex operator algebras with central charge c less than or equal to 1 is also discussed.
Herein we study conformal vectors of a Z-graded vertex algebra of (strong) CFT type. We prove that the full vertex algebra automorphism group transitively acts on the set of the conformal vectors of strong CFT type if the vertex algebra is simple. The statement is equivalent to the uniqueness of self-dual vertex operator algebra structures of a simple vertex algebra. As an application, we show that the full vertex algebra automorphism group of a simple vertex operator algebra of strong CFT type uniquely decomposes into the product of certain two subgroups and the vertex operator algebra automo…
