We conduct a systematic study of the angular momentum problem in numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation. We investigate the role of numerical resolution using a semi-cosmological setup which combines an efficient use of the number of particles in an isolated halo while preserving the hierarchical build-up of the disk through the merging of clumps. We perform the same simulation varying the resolution over 4 orders of magnitude. Independent on the level of resolution, the loss of angular momentum stays the same and can be tied to dynamical friction during the build-up phase. This is confirmed in a cosmological simulation. We also perform simulations including star formation and star formation and supernova feedback. While the former has no influence on the angular momentum problem, the latter reduces the loss to a level potentially in agreement with observations. This is achieved through a suppression of early star formation and therefore the formation of a large, slowly rotating bulge. We conclude that feedback is a critical component to achieve realistic disk galaxies in cosmological simulations. Numerical resolution is important, but by itself not capable of solving the angular momentum problem.
Galactic disk formation requires knowledge about the initial conditions under which disk galaxies form, the boundary conditions that affect their secular evolution and the micro-physical processes that drive the multi-phase interstellar medium and regulate their star formation history. Most of these ingredients are still poorly understood. Recent high-resolution observations of young high-redshift disk galaxies provide insight into early phases of galactic disk formation and evolution. Combined with low-redshift disk data these observations should eventually allow us to reconstruct the origin …
An Adaptive Mesh Refinement cosmological resimulation is analyzed in order to test whether filamentary flows of cold gas are responsible for the build-up of angular momentum within a Milky Way like disk at z>=3. A set of algorithms is presented that takes advantage of the high spatial resolution of the simulation (12 pc) to identify: (i) the central gas disk and its plane of orientation; (ii) the complex individual filament trajectories that connect to the disk, and; (iii) the infalling satellites. The results show that two filaments at z>5.5, which later merge to form a single filament at z<4…
Angular statistics of cosmological observables are hard to compute. The main difficulty is due to the presence of highly-oscillatory Bessel functions which need to be integrated over. In this paper, we provide a simple and fast method to compute the angular power spectrum and bispectrum of any observable. The method is based on using an FFTlog algorithm to decompose the momentum-space statistics onto a basis of power-law functions. For each power law, the integrals over Bessel functions have a simple analytical solution. This allows us to efficiently evaluate these integrals, independently of …
We use angular size versus redshift data for galaxy clusters from Bonamente et al. (2006) to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-evolving dark energy cosmological models. These constraints are compatible with those from other recent data, but are not very restrictive. A joint analysis of the angular size data with more restrictive baryon acoustic oscillation peak length scale and supernova Type Ia apparent magnitude data favors a spatially-flat cosmological model currently dominated by a time-independent cosmological constant but does not exclude time-varying dark energy…
Galaxy redshift surveys are subject to incompleteness and inhomogeneous sampling due to the various constraints inherent to spectroscopic observations. This can introduce systematic errors on the summary statistics of interest, which need to be mitigated in cosmological analysis to achieve high accuracy. Standard practices involve applying weighting schemes based on completeness estimates across the survey footprint, possibly supplemented with additional weighting schemes accounting for density-dependent effects. In this work, we concentrate on pure angular systematics and describe an alternat…
We present a new efficient method to compute the angular power spectra of large-scale structure observables that circumvents the numerical integration over Bessel functions, expanding on a recently proposed algorithm based on FFTlog. This new approach has better convergence properties. The method is explicitly implemented in the CLASS code for the case of number count $C_\ell$'s (including redshift-space distortions, weak lensing, and all other relativistic corrections) and cosmic shear $C_\ell$'s. In both cases our approach speeds up the calculation of the exact $C_\ell$'s (without the Limber…
We study forecasts for the accuracy of the determination of cosmological parameters from future large scale photometric surveys obtained using the full shape of the 2-point galaxy angular correlation function. The effects of linear redshift-space distortion, photometric redshift gaussian errors, galaxy bias and non-linearities in the power spectrum are included on our analysis. The Fisher information matrix is constructed with the full covariance matrix, including the correlation between nearby redshift shells arising from the photometric redshift error. We show that under some reasonable assu…
We analyze the physical properties and infall rates of the circum-galactic gas around disks obtained in multi-resolved, cosmological, AMR simulations. At intermediate and low redshifts, disks are embedded into an extended, hot, tenuous corona that contributes largely in fueling the disk with non-enriched gas whereas the accretion of enriched gas from tidal streams occurs throughout episodic events. We derive an infall rate close to the disk of the same value as the one of the star formation rate in the disk and its temporal evolution as a function of galacto-centric radius nicely shows that th…
Bulges can be classified into classical and pseudobulges; the former are considered to be end products of galactic mergers and the latter to form via secular evolution of galactic disks. Observationally, bulges of disk galaxies are mostly pseudobulges, including the Milky Way's. We here show, by using self-consistent cosmological simulations of galaxy formation, that the formation of pseudobulges of Milky Way-sized disk galaxies has mostly completed before disk formation; thus the main channel of pseudobulge formation is not secular evolution of disks. Our pseudobulges form by rapid gas supply…
Angular cosmological correlators are infamously difficult to compute due to the highly oscillatory nature of the projection integrals. Motivated by recent development on analytic approaches to cosmological perturbation theory, in this paper we present an efficient method for computing cosmological four-point correlations in angular space, generalizing previous works on lower-point functions. This builds on the FFTLog algorithm that approximates the matter power spectrum as a sum over power-law functions, which makes certain momentum integrals analytically solvable. The computational complexity…
We investigate the effect of the cosmological constant on the angular size of a black hole shadow. It is known that the accelerated expansion which is created by the cosmological constant changes the angular size of the black hole shadow for static observers. However, the shadow size must be calculated for the appropriate cosmological observes. We calculate the angular size of the shadow measured by cosmological comoving observers by projecting the shadow angle to this observer rest frame. We show that the shadow size tends to zero as the observer approaches the cosmological horizon. We estima…
We examine the distribution of young stars associated with the spiral arms of a simulated L* cosmological disk galaxy. We find age patterns orthogonal to the arms which are not inconsistent with the predictions of classical density wave theory, a view further supported by recent observations of face-on Grand Design spirals such as M51. The distribution of metals within a simulated ~0.1L* disk is presented, reinforcing the link between star formation, the age-metallicity relation, and the metallicity distribution function.
Observationally, magnetic fields reach equipartition with thermal energy and cosmic rays in the interstellar medium of disk galaxies such as the Milky Way. However, thus far cosmological simulations of the formation and evolution of galaxies have usually neglected magnetic fields. We employ the moving-mesh code \textsc{Arepo} to follow for the first time the formation and evolution of a Milky Way-like disk galaxy in its full cosmological context while taking into account magnetic fields. We find that a prescribed tiny magnetic seed field grows exponentially by a small-scale dynamo until it sat…
Recent CMB observations have resulted in very precise observational data. A robust and reliable CMB reconstruction technique can lead to efficient estimation of the cosmological parameters. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology using simulated temperature and polarization observations using cosmic variance limited future generation PRISM satellite mission. We generate samples from the joint distribution by implementing the CMB inverse covariance weighted internal-linear-combination (ILC) with the Gibbs sampling technique. We use the Python Sky Model (PySM), d4f1s1 to generate the r…
We present SPH cosmological simulations of the formation of three disk galaxies with a detailed treatment of chemical evolution and cooling. The resulting galaxies have properties compatible with observations: relatively high disk-to-total ratios, thin stellar disks and good agreement with the Tully-Fisher and the luminosity-size relations. They present a break in the luminosity profile at 3.0 +- 0.5 disk scale lengths, while showing an exponential mass profile without any apparent breaks, in line with recent observational results. Since the stellar mass profile is exponential, only difference…
We have investigated the impact of dissipationless minor galaxy mergers on the angular momentum of the remnant. Our simulations cover a range of initial orbital characteristics and the system consists of a massive galaxy with a bulge and disk merging with a much less massive (one-tenth or one-twentieth) gasless companion which has a variety of morphologies (disk- or elliptical-like) and central baryonic mass concentrations. During the process of merging, the orbital angular momentum is redistributed into the internal angular momentum of the final system; the internal angular momentum of the pr…
The angular momentum of dark matter haloes controls their spin magnitude and orientation, which in turn influences the galaxies therein. However, the process by which dark matter haloes acquire angular momentum is not fully understood; in particular, it is unclear whether angular momentum growth is stochastic. To address this question, we extend the genetic modification technique to allow control over the angular momentum of any region in the initial conditions. Using this technique to produce a sequence of modified simulations, we can then investigate whether changes to the angular momentum o…
Unresolved and resolved sources of gravitational waves are at the origin of a stochastic gravitational wave background. While the computation of its mean density as a function of frequency in a homogeneous and isotropic universe is standard lore, the computation of its anisotropies requires to understand the coarse graining from local systems, to galactic scales and then to cosmology. An expression of the gravitational wave energy density valid in any general spacetime is derived. It is then specialized to a perturbed Friedmann-Lemaître spacetime in order to determine the angular power spectru…
