We study a significant nuclear suppression of the relative production rates (p(d)+A)/(p+d(p)) for the Drell-Yan process at large Feynman xF. Since this is the region of minimal values for the light-front momentum fraction variable x2 in the target nucleus, it is tempting to interpret this as a manifestation of coherence or of a Color Glass Condensate. We demonstrate, however, that this suppression mechanism is governed by the energy conservation restrictions in multiple parton rescatterings in nuclear matter. To eliminate nuclear shadowing effects coming from the coherence, we calculate nuclear suppression in the light-cone dipole approach at large dilepton masses and at energy accessible at FNAL. Our calculations are in a good agreement with data from the E772 experiment. Using the same mechanism we predict also nuclear suppression at forward rapidities in the RHIC energy range.
Effects of finite temperature correction to the dilepton emission rate in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions have been looked into. It has been seen that although the $ρ$-peak in the dilepton spectra from the hadronic sector is suppressed at very high temperatures, almost no effect can be observed in the space time integrated count rate.
The pion electromagnetic form factor at finite temperature is studied using an effective chiral lagrangian that includes explicitly vector mesons. We find that in the time-like region around the rho meson resonance it decreases with increasing temperature and leads to a suppression of dilepton production from pion-pion annihilation in a hot hadronic matter. Effects on dilepton production in high energy heavy ion collisions and its relevance to the phase transition in a hot hadronic matter are discussed.
We demonstrate that it is possible to use the polarization of vector quarkonia, measured from dilepton event samples, as an instrument to study the suppression of chi_c and chi_b in heavy-ion collisions, where a direct determination of signal yields involving the identification of low-energy photons is essentially impossible. A change of the observed J/psi and Upsilon(1S) polarizations from proton-proton to central nucleus-nucleus collisions would directly reflect differences in the nuclear dissociation patterns of S and P states and may provide a strong indication for quarkonium sequential su…
In this work the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear modification ratio is evaluated for the dilepton production at RHIC and LHC, using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. The ratio is compared for two distinct dilepton mass values, concerning the transverse momentum distribution, and a suppression of the Cronin peak is verified even for large mass. The nuclear modification ratio suppression in the dilepton rapidity spectra, as obtained for hadrons at RHIC, is verified for LHC energies at large transverse momentum, although not present at RHIC energies. These res…
We calculate the rapidity dependence of leading-order medium dilepton yields resulting from a quark-gluon plasma which has a local time-dependent anisotropy in momentum space. We present a phenomenological model which includes temporal evolution of the plasma anisotropy parameter, xi, and the hard momentum scale, p_hard. Our model interpolates between 1+1 dimensional collisionally-broadened expansion at early times and 1+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamic expansion at late times. Using our model, we find that at LHC energies, forward high-energy medium dilepton production would be suppressed by …
We show that in a hot hadron gas, chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement lead to a strong suppression of dilepton production by pion annihilation in the continuum above the $ρ-ω-ϕ$ peak. The suppression due to deconfinement persists also for annihilation reactions involving heavier mesons.
The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear modification ratio for dilepton production at RHIC and LHC is presented, calculated in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. The transverse momentum ratio is compared for two distinct dilepton mass values and a suppression of the Cronin peak is verified even for large mass. The nuclear modification ratio suppression in the dilepton rapidity spectra, as obtained experimentally for hadrons at RHIC, is verified for LHC energies at large transverse momentum, although not present at RHIC energies. The ratio between LHC and RHIC nu…
Collective bremsstrahlung of vector meson fields in relativistic nuclear collisions is studied within the time-dependent Walecka model. Mutual deceleration of the colliding nuclei is described by introducing the effective stopping time and average rapidity loss of baryons. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of virtual omega-mesons produced by bremsstrahlung mechanism can provide a substantial contribution to the soft dilepton yield at the SPS bombarding energies. In particular, it may be responsible for the dilepton enhancement observed in 160 AGev central Pb+Au collisions. Suggestions fo…
Data from E772 and E866 experiments on the Drell-Yan process exhibit a significant nuclear suppression at large Feynman xF. We show that a corresponding kinematic region does not allow to interpret this as a manifestation of coherence or a Color Glass Condensate. We demonstrate, however, that this suppression can be treated alternatively as an effective energy loss proportional to initial energy. To eliminate suppression coming from the coherence, we perform predictions for nuclear effects also at large dilepton masses. Our calculations are in a good agreement with available data. Since the ki…
We study the bremsstrahlung of virtual omega mesons due to the collective deceleration of nuclei at the initial stage of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of these mesons may give an important contribution to the observed yields of dileptons. Mass spectra of positron-electron and muon pairs produced in central Au+Au collisions are calculated under some simplifying assumptions on the space-time variation of the baryonic current in a nuclear collision process. Comparison with the CERES data for 160 AGev Pb+Au collisions shows that the proposed mech…
The Drell-Yan (DY) process of dilepton pair production off nuclei is not affected by final state interactions, energy loss or absorption. A detailed phenomenological study of this process is thus convenient for investigation of the onset of initial-state effects in proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the DY process in $pA$ interactions at RHIC and LHC energies in the color dipole framework. We analyse several effects affecting the nuclear suppression, $R_{pA}<1$, of dilepton pairs, such as the saturation effects, restrictions imposed by energ…
Various QCD tests using recent results from fixed-target dimuon production experiments at Fermilab are discussed. We emphasize that clear evidence for scaling-violation in the Drell-Yan process remains to be established. Further experimental and theoretical work are needed to understand the polarization of the Drell-Yan pairs. The nuclear medium effects for dilepton productions are also discussed. In particular, the energy-loss of partons traversing nuclear medium is deduced from the Drell-Yan nuclear dependence.
The dilepton production at backward rapidities in $pAu$ and $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is investigated in the dipole approach. The results are shown through the nuclear modification ratio $R_{pA}$ considering transverse momentum and rapidity spectra. The dilepton modification ratio presents interesting behavior at the backward rapidities when compared with the already known forward ones, since it is related with the large $x$ kinematical region that is being probed. The rapidity dependence of the nuclear modification ratio in the dilepton production is strongly dependent on the B…
The dilepton production is investigated in proton-nucleus collisions in the forward region using the Color Glass Condensate approach. The transverse momentum distribution ($p_T$), more precisely the low $p_T$ region, where the saturation effects are expected to increase, is analyzed. The ratio between proton-nucleus and proton-proton differential cross section for RHIC and LHC energies is evaluated, showing the effects of saturation at small $p_T$, and presenting a Cronin type peak at moderate $p_T$. These features indicate the dilepton as a most suitable probe to study the properties of the s…
We compute cross sections for the Drell-Yan process in nuclear collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in α_s. The effects of shadowing on the normalization and on the mass and rapidity dependence of these cross sections are presented. An estimate of higher order corrections is obtained from next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of the rapidity-integrated mass distribution. Variations in these predictions resulting from choices of parton distribution sets are discussed. Numerical results for mass distributions at NLO are presented for RHIC and LHC energies, using appropriate rapid…
Dilepton production from two photon interactions $γγ\rightarrow l^+l^-$ are studied in semi-central and peripheral nuclear collisions. Based on Weizsäcker-Williams approach, it is shown that the dilepton photoproduction is proportional to the electromagnetic (EM) fields $\sim E^2B^2$ and therefore sensitive to the magnitude and lifetime of initial EM fields which last only for a short time and are hard to be measured in experiments directly. We propose dilepton photoproduction as a probe for the nuclear charge fluctuations, which are crucial for the electric/magnetic field induced chiral and c…
We consider the production of lepton pairs with intermediate invariant masses, in relativistic nuclear collisions. Thermal sources are briefly discussed, as well as a newer production mechanism which involves jet-plasma interactions. Estimates for high p_T lepton pairs are provided.
Recently the first single photon spectra from CERN energy heavy-ion collisions were reported by WA80, while NA34/3 and NA38 have obtained the spectra for dileptons with the mass up to 4-5 GeV. The production rates for photons and dileptons significantly increase when reactions involving the $A_1$ meson are included. However, with the conventional expansion scenario, the absolute yields are still significantly smaller than the observed ones. It may indicate that expansion in the ``mixed state" takes much more time.
We study Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton(deuterium)-nucleus and in nucleus-nucleus collisions within the light-cone color dipole formalism. This approach is especially suitable for predicting nuclear effects in the DY cross section for heavy ion collisions, as it provides the impact parameter dependence of nuclear shadowing and transverse momentum broadening, quantities that are not available from the standard parton model. For p(D)+A collisions we calculate nuclear shadowing and investigate nuclear modification of the DY transverse momentum distribution at RHIC and LHC for kinema…
We argue that the NICA fixed target experiment will be able to provide very important new experimental data on dilepton and $ϕ$ meson production in the basically undiscovered energy domain between the SIS and SPS energies. Experimental information about elementary cross sections in this energy region is an essential ingredient of models of nuclear collisions in the same energy range.
Measurements of dilepton production from charm decay and Drell-Yan processes respectively probe the gluon and sea quark distributions in hadronic collisions. In nucleus-nucleus collisions, these hard scattering processes constitute a `background' to thermal contributions from the hot matter produced by the collision. To determine the magnitude and behavior of this background, we calculate the hard scattering contribution to dilepton production in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC at next to leading order in perturbative QCD. Invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are p…
The spectra of lepton pairs from correlated open charm and bottom decays in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are calculated. Our approach includes energy loss effects of heavy quarks in deconfined matter which are determined by temperature and density of the expanding parton medium. We find a noticeable suppression of the initial transverse momentum spectrum of heavy quarks due to the energy loss at LHC conditions. Within the central rapidity covered by the ALICE detector system, the dominant contribution from bottom decays to the high invariant mass dielectron spectrum is predicted.
At finite density parity can be spontaneously broken in strong interactions with far reaching implications. In particular, a time-dependent pseudoscalar background would modify QED by adding a Chern-Simons term to the lagrangian. As a striking consequence we propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at low invariant masses. The presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the $ρ$ spectral function and …
Perturbative analysis of parton kinetics for high energy nuclear collisions shows, that thermal equilibration of gluons happens very fast, while quark production is much slower. A simple 'minimal model' is proposed which includes only in-coming quarks and anti-quarks. We have found that a smaller quark number is more than compensated by the fact, that they are imbedded into the hotter glue. Predicted yield of dileptons and photons in the interesting kinematic region are larger than considered before, and are quite observable at RHIC and LHC.
Photons and dileptons are emitted throughout the evolution of the deconfined nuclear medium produced in heavy ion collisions. As such they can provide valuable information about the different phases of the medium, and complement hadronic measurements and other observables. In this work, recent developments related to electromagnetic emissions at early time, in the cross-over region, and at late times are reviewed. The spacetime description of the nuclear medium from a hydrodynamic model of heavy ion collisions is used to provide context and guide the discussion.
Using the opacity expansion technique we investigate the photon radiation and dilepton production induced by multiple rescattering as energetic parton jet passing through the strong interacting medium. The real photon radiation and dilepton invariant-mass spectrums of the bremsstrahlung contribution from an energetic quark jet are presented. The leading contribution of total energy loss by photon emmision in medium of a higher energy quark jet is found to be proportional to the jet energy and has a linear dependence on the thickness of the nuclear target. The rescattering contribution for the …
We discuss the status of a subset of penetrating probes in relativistic nuclear collisions. Thermal photons and dileptons are considered, as well as the electromagnetic signature of jets.

We consider particle production in high energy pA collisions. In addition to the coherent interactions with the nuclear color field, we take into account coherent interactions with the nuclear electromagnetic Coulomb field. Employing the dipole model, we sum up the leading multiple color and electromagnetic interactions and derive inclusive cross sections for photon and dilepton production. We found that the Coulomb corrections are up to $10\%$ at $\sqrt{s}=200$~GeV per nucleon.
An introduction to physics of in-medium hadrons with special emphasis towards modification of vector meson properties in dense nuclear matter is given. We start from remarkable analogy between the in-medium behavior of atoms in gases and hadrons in nuclear matter. Modifications of vector meson widths and masses can be registered experimentally in heavy-ion collisions by detecting dilepton spectra from decays of nucleon resonances and light unflavored mesons including $ρ$- and $ω$-mesons. Theoretical schemes for description of the in-medium hadrons are reviewed and recent experimental results o…
The production of intermediate mass dileptons in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions at SPS energies is studied. The acceptance and detector resolution inherent to measurements by the NA50 experimental collaboration are accurately modeled. The measured centrality dependence of the intermediate mass lepton pair excess is also addressed.
We present dilepton spectra from p+p, d+p and p+Nb reactions at SIS energies, which were simulated with the GiBUU transport model in a resonance model approach. These spectra are compared to the data published by the HADES and DLS collaborations. It is shown that the $ρ$ spectral function includes non-trivial effects already in elementary reactions, due to production via baryon resonances, which can yield large contributions to the dilepton spectrum. Dilepton spectra from nuclear reactions in the energy range of the HADES experiment are thus found to be sensitive also to properties of nucleon …
We present a quantitative description of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ suppression in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN energies. We use a conventional hadronic framework based on nuclear absorption plus final state interaction of the $J/ψ$ or $ψ^\prime$ with co-moving hadrons.
$J/ψ$ production cross section considering the contributions of both color-singlet and color-octet $c\bar c$ channels is calculated. The result is used to study the suppression of $J/ψ$ in nuclear collisions. With absorption cross sections for $(c \bar c)_8$ $σ_{abs}^8\simeq 11mb $ and $(c \bar c)_1$ $σ_{abs}^1\simeq 0mb $ the p-A and A-B data except for Pb-Pb can be explained. Possible explanations of additional suppression in Pb-Pb are discussed.
We study the clustering of colour strings in the transverse plane of nucleus-nucleus collisions and argue that deconfinement sets in when the string density within a cluster reaches a critical value. We show that this implies a minimal cluster size at the onset of deconfinement, which in turn results in discontinuous behaviour for J/Psi suppression.
We discuss a common feature of all known reactions on nuclear targets - a significant suppression at large x. Simple interpretation of this effect is based on energy conservation restrictions in initial state parton rescatterings. Using the light-cone dipole approach this mechanism is shown to control variety of processes on nuclear targets: high-pT particle production at different rapidities as well as direct and virtual (Drell-Yan) photon production. We demonstrate universality and wide applicability of this mechanism allowing to describe large-x effects also at SPS and FNAL energies too low…
We demonstrate that strong suppression of the relative production rate (d+Au)/(p+p) of inclusive high-pT hadrons at forward rapidities observed at RHIC is due to parton multiple rescatterings in nuclear matter. The light-cone dipole approach-based calculations are in a good agreement with BRAHMS and STAR data. They also indicate a significant nuclear suppression at midrapidities with a weak onset of the coherence effects. This prediction is supported by the preliminary d+Au data from the PHENIX Collaboration. Moreover, since similar suppression pattern is also expected to show up at lower ener…
We study a strong suppression of the relative production rate (d-Au)/(p-p) for inclusive high-pT hadrons of different species at large forward rapidities (large Feynman xF). The model predictions calculated in the light-cone dipole approach are in a good agreement with the recent measurements by the BRAHMS and STAR Collaborations at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We predict a similar suppression at large pT and large xF also at lower energies, where no effect of coherence is possible. It allows to exclude the saturation models or the models based on Color Glass Condensate from interp…
We review the production of lepton pairs during high energy nuclear collisions. We highlight the information being carried out of the hot and dense strongly interacting medium. We describe the phenomenon of scalar-vector mixing that can take place in a dense medium and suggest possible measurable signatures of this effect in high energy heavy ion collisions.
We study the possibility of $ρ-δ$ mixing via N-N excitations in dense nuclear matter. This mixing induces a peak in the dilepton spectra at an invariant mass equal to that of the $δ$. We calculate the cross section for dilepton production through the mixing process and we compare its size with that of $π-π$ annihilation. In-medium masses and mixing angles are also calculated.
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high transverse momentum hadrons in deuteron-nucleus collisions. We calculate the charged hadron spectra to leading order using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We obtain the d+Au to pp ratio both in minimum bias collisions and as a function of centrality. The minimum bias results agree reasonably well with the BRAHMS data while the calculated centrality dependence underestimates the data and is a stronger function of p_T than the data indicate.
In the field theoretical Glauber-Gribov framework in the eikonal approximation, we show that, in hadron-nucleus collisions in the high-energy limit and under especific conditions, the rescattering contributions to the J/psi production cross-section vanish, leading to an A^1 dependence on the atomic number A -- except for nuclear effects in the nucleus structure function, the so-called shadowing. We show that the RHIC data on $J/ψ$ production in d-Au collisions can be described with nuclear shadowing alone (sigma_{abs} = 0). The corresponding results for Au-Au collisions are also presented and …
We discuss the latest theoretical results on direct photon and dilepton production from relativistic heavy-ion collisions. While the dilepton spectra at low invariant mass show in-medium effects like a collisional broadening of the vector meson spectral functions, the dilepton yield at high invariant masses (above 1.1 GeV) is dominated by QGP contributions for central heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies. The present status of the photon $v_2$ "puzzle" - a large elliptic flow $v_2$ of the direct photons experimentally observed at RHIC and LHC energies - is also addressed. The role of …
We study the possibility of $ρ-a_0$ mixing via N-N excitations in dense nuclear matter. This mixing is found to induce a peak in the dilepton spectra at an invariant mass equal to that of the $a_0$. We calculate the cross section for dilepton production through mixing and we compare its size with that of $π-π$ annihilation. In-medium masses and mixing angles are also calculated. Some preliminary results of the mixing effect on the dilepton production rates at finite temperature are also presented.
The measured ratios $R(x,A_1/A_2)$ for $J/Ψ$, $Ψ'$ and $μ^+μ^-$ production on two different targets $A_1, A_2$ as a function of the fractional momentum $x$ of the final state are well fit with a very simple functional form having three adjustable parameters. An empirical relation is found between the three parameters of the fit. The deduced $J/Ψ$ absorption cross sections $σ_{abs}$ cluster around two values of which only $σ_{abs} = 5.8 \pm 0.2$ mb seems acceptable.
We investigate QCD coherence effects in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei and in Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton-nucleus collisions within the light-cone color-dipole approach. The physical mechanisms underlying the nuclear effects become very transparent in this approach and are explained in some detail. We present numerical calculations of nuclear shadowing in DIS and DY and compare to data. Nuclear effects in the DY transverse momentum distribution are calculated as well. The dipole approach is the only known way to calculate the Cronin effect without introducing addit…
The nuclear suppression factor R_AA of single inclusive hadrons measured in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions was the first observable to study jet quenching, i.e. the final state interaction of hard parton showers with the surrounding bulk matter. While its transverse momentum (P_T) dependence of R_AA observed at RHIC was weak and hence never decisive in constraining models, there is now a strong and non-trivial P_T dependence observed at the LHC. This has been a challenge for several models which worked well at RHIC kinematics. However, in more general terms it is also of importance to …
We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.
We study charmonium production in hadron-nucleus collisions through the intermediate next-to-leading Fock space component $|(\bar{c}c)_8 g>$, formed by a colour octet $\bar{c}c$ pair and a gluon. We estimate the size of this state and show that its interaction with nucleons accounts for the observed charmonium suppression in nuclear interactions.
Data from J/psi and psi' production in p-A collisions are used to determine the cross section for absorption of pre-resonance charmonium in nuclear matter. The J/psi suppression in O-Cu, O-U and S-U collisions is fully reproduced by the corresponding nuclear absorption, while Pb-Pb collisions show an additional suppression increasing with centrality. We study the onset of this change in terms of hadronic comover interactions and conclude that so far no conventional hadronic description can consistently account for all data. Deconfinement, starting at a critical point determined by central S-U …
We examine whether it is possible to simultaneously describe the experimental data from RHIC and LHC on nuclear suppression of light hadrons and non-photonic single electrons in the pQCD picture of parton energy loss. We perform calculations accounting for both radiative and collisional energy loss. We show that once the coupling constant is fixed from comparison with data on the nuclear modification factor for light hadrons it gives a satisfactory agreement with data on the electron R_{AA} and azimuthal anisotropy v_2. Our results show that the collisional mechanism is only of marginal signif…
We demonstrate that the main part of the observed nuclear suppression of dilepton and charmonium production, especially the x-dependence of the suppression, can be explained by the absorption of fast initial partons. We assume the absorption to be x1-dependent and determine the empirical form of this dependence. Several reactions at different energies are described with the same parametrization of the absorption cross section. The factorization theorem constraints and some alternative models are discussed. The obtained description of data allows to make conclusions about the origin of nuclear …
Using the color glass condensate formalism, we study the nuclear modification of forward $J/ψ$ and $D$ meson production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC. We show that relying on the optical Glauber model to obtain the dipole cross section of the nucleus from the one of the proton fitted to HERA DIS data leads to a smaller nuclear suppression than in the first study of these processes in this formalism and a better agreement with experimental data.
The dilepton spectra from open charm decay in $p+A$ reactions at $\sqrt s=200$ AGeV are proposed to constrain gluon shadowing in nuclei. We show that the required measurements are feasible at RHIC.
Measurements of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from experiment NA50 at the CERN SPS are compared to predictions based on a hadronic model of charmonium suppression by Vogt and myself. Data on centrality dependence and total cross sections are in good accord with our predictions. Uncertainties in theoretical quanities such as NA50's $L$ parameter are discussed.
The nuclear modification factor R_AA for charged hadron production at the LHC is predicted from jet energy loss induced by gluon bremsstrahlung. The Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe formalism is used, together with an ideal hydrodynamical model.
