We discuss a common feature of all known reactions on nuclear targets - a significant suppression at large x. Simple interpretation of this effect is based on energy conservation restrictions in initial state parton rescatterings. Using the light-cone dipole approach this mechanism is shown to control variety of processes on nuclear targets: high-pT particle production at different rapidities as well as direct and virtual (Drell-Yan) photon production. We demonstrate universality and wide applicability of this mechanism allowing to describe large-x effects also at SPS and FNAL energies too low for the onset of coherent effects or shadowing.

We study a significant nuclear suppression of the relative production rates (p(d)+A)/(p+d(p)) for the Drell-Yan process at large Feynman xF. Since this is the region of minimal values for the light-front momentum fraction variable x2 in the target nucleus, it is tempting to interpret this as a manifestation of coherence or of a Color Glass Condensate. We demonstrate, however, that this suppression mechanism is governed by the energy conservation restrictions in multiple parton rescatterings in nuclear matter. To eliminate nuclear shadowing effects coming from the coherence, we calculate nuclea…
We present a quantitative description of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ suppression in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN energies. We use a conventional hadronic framework based on nuclear absorption plus final state interaction of the $J/ψ$ or $ψ^\prime$ with co-moving hadrons.
$J/ψ$ production cross section considering the contributions of both color-singlet and color-octet $c\bar c$ channels is calculated. The result is used to study the suppression of $J/ψ$ in nuclear collisions. With absorption cross sections for $(c \bar c)_8$ $σ_{abs}^8\simeq 11mb $ and $(c \bar c)_1$ $σ_{abs}^1\simeq 0mb $ the p-A and A-B data except for Pb-Pb can be explained. Possible explanations of additional suppression in Pb-Pb are discussed.
We study the clustering of colour strings in the transverse plane of nucleus-nucleus collisions and argue that deconfinement sets in when the string density within a cluster reaches a critical value. We show that this implies a minimal cluster size at the onset of deconfinement, which in turn results in discontinuous behaviour for J/Psi suppression.
We demonstrate that it is possible to use the polarization of vector quarkonia, measured from dilepton event samples, as an instrument to study the suppression of chi_c and chi_b in heavy-ion collisions, where a direct determination of signal yields involving the identification of low-energy photons is essentially impossible. A change of the observed J/psi and Upsilon(1S) polarizations from proton-proton to central nucleus-nucleus collisions would directly reflect differences in the nuclear dissociation patterns of S and P states and may provide a strong indication for quarkonium sequential su…
We demonstrate that strong suppression of the relative production rate (d+Au)/(p+p) of inclusive high-pT hadrons at forward rapidities observed at RHIC is due to parton multiple rescatterings in nuclear matter. The light-cone dipole approach-based calculations are in a good agreement with BRAHMS and STAR data. They also indicate a significant nuclear suppression at midrapidities with a weak onset of the coherence effects. This prediction is supported by the preliminary d+Au data from the PHENIX Collaboration. Moreover, since similar suppression pattern is also expected to show up at lower ener…
We study a strong suppression of the relative production rate (d-Au)/(p-p) for inclusive high-pT hadrons of different species at large forward rapidities (large Feynman xF). The model predictions calculated in the light-cone dipole approach are in a good agreement with the recent measurements by the BRAHMS and STAR Collaborations at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We predict a similar suppression at large pT and large xF also at lower energies, where no effect of coherence is possible. It allows to exclude the saturation models or the models based on Color Glass Condensate from interp…
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high transverse momentum hadrons in deuteron-nucleus collisions. We calculate the charged hadron spectra to leading order using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We obtain the d+Au to pp ratio both in minimum bias collisions and as a function of centrality. The minimum bias results agree reasonably well with the BRAHMS data while the calculated centrality dependence underestimates the data and is a stronger function of p_T than the data indicate.
In the field theoretical Glauber-Gribov framework in the eikonal approximation, we show that, in hadron-nucleus collisions in the high-energy limit and under especific conditions, the rescattering contributions to the J/psi production cross-section vanish, leading to an A^1 dependence on the atomic number A -- except for nuclear effects in the nucleus structure function, the so-called shadowing. We show that the RHIC data on $J/ψ$ production in d-Au collisions can be described with nuclear shadowing alone (sigma_{abs} = 0). The corresponding results for Au-Au collisions are also presented and …
The measured ratios $R(x,A_1/A_2)$ for $J/Ψ$, $Ψ'$ and $μ^+μ^-$ production on two different targets $A_1, A_2$ as a function of the fractional momentum $x$ of the final state are well fit with a very simple functional form having three adjustable parameters. An empirical relation is found between the three parameters of the fit. The deduced $J/Ψ$ absorption cross sections $σ_{abs}$ cluster around two values of which only $σ_{abs} = 5.8 \pm 0.2$ mb seems acceptable.
We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.
We study charmonium production in hadron-nucleus collisions through the intermediate next-to-leading Fock space component $|(\bar{c}c)_8 g>$, formed by a colour octet $\bar{c}c$ pair and a gluon. We estimate the size of this state and show that its interaction with nucleons accounts for the observed charmonium suppression in nuclear interactions.
The nuclear suppression factor R_AA of single inclusive hadrons measured in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions was the first observable to study jet quenching, i.e. the final state interaction of hard parton showers with the surrounding bulk matter. While its transverse momentum (P_T) dependence of R_AA observed at RHIC was weak and hence never decisive in constraining models, there is now a strong and non-trivial P_T dependence observed at the LHC. This has been a challenge for several models which worked well at RHIC kinematics. However, in more general terms it is also of importance to …
Data from E772 and E866 experiments on the Drell-Yan process exhibit a significant nuclear suppression at large Feynman xF. We show that a corresponding kinematic region does not allow to interpret this as a manifestation of coherence or a Color Glass Condensate. We demonstrate, however, that this suppression can be treated alternatively as an effective energy loss proportional to initial energy. To eliminate suppression coming from the coherence, we perform predictions for nuclear effects also at large dilepton masses. Our calculations are in a good agreement with available data. Since the ki…
Data from J/psi and psi' production in p-A collisions are used to determine the cross section for absorption of pre-resonance charmonium in nuclear matter. The J/psi suppression in O-Cu, O-U and S-U collisions is fully reproduced by the corresponding nuclear absorption, while Pb-Pb collisions show an additional suppression increasing with centrality. We study the onset of this change in terms of hadronic comover interactions and conclude that so far no conventional hadronic description can consistently account for all data. Deconfinement, starting at a critical point determined by central S-U …
We examine whether it is possible to simultaneously describe the experimental data from RHIC and LHC on nuclear suppression of light hadrons and non-photonic single electrons in the pQCD picture of parton energy loss. We perform calculations accounting for both radiative and collisional energy loss. We show that once the coupling constant is fixed from comparison with data on the nuclear modification factor for light hadrons it gives a satisfactory agreement with data on the electron R_{AA} and azimuthal anisotropy v_2. Our results show that the collisional mechanism is only of marginal signif…
Using the color glass condensate formalism, we study the nuclear modification of forward $J/ψ$ and $D$ meson production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC. We show that relying on the optical Glauber model to obtain the dipole cross section of the nucleus from the one of the proton fitted to HERA DIS data leads to a smaller nuclear suppression than in the first study of these processes in this formalism and a better agreement with experimental data.
We describe production of heavy quarkonia in pA collisions within the dipole approach, assuming dominance of the perturbative color-singlet mechanism (CSM) in the $p_T$-integrated cross section. Although accounting for a nonzero heavy $Q$-$\bar Q$ separation is a higher twist correction, usually neglected, we found it to be the dominant source of nuclear effects, significantly exceeding the effects of leading twist gluon shadowing and energy loss. Moreover, this contribution turns out to be the most reliably predicted, relying on the precise measurements of the dipole cross section at HERA. Th…
Measurements of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from experiment NA50 at the CERN SPS are compared to predictions based on a hadronic model of charmonium suppression by Vogt and myself. Data on centrality dependence and total cross sections are in good accord with our predictions. Uncertainties in theoretical quanities such as NA50's $L$ parameter are discussed.
The effect of parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter on the suppression of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) in heavy-ion collisions is investigated, by extrapolating a model based on coherent radiative energy loss recently shown to describe successfully J/psi and Upsilon suppression in proton-nucleus collisions. Model predictions in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC (Au-Au, Cu-Cu, and Cu-Au) and LHC (Pb-Pb) show a sizable suppression arising from the sole effect of energy loss in cold matter. This effect should thus be considered in order to get a reliable baseline for cold nuclear matter effects in q…
The suppression of high transverse momentum P_T hadron production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion (A-A) collisions as compared to the scaled expectation from proton-proton (p-p) collisions expressed as the nuclear modification factor R_AA is experimentally well established and can be traced back to interactions between the hard parton shower and the soft bulk matter. Physical intuition suggests that the medium modification should cease to be important when the hard scale of parton production is much larger than the typical momentum scale in the medium (e.g. the temperature T) and that consequen…
The nuclear modification factor R_AA for charged hadron production at the LHC is predicted from jet energy loss induced by gluon bremsstrahlung. The Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe formalism is used, together with an ideal hydrodynamical model.
We demonstrate that the main part of the observed nuclear suppression of dilepton and charmonium production, especially the x-dependence of the suppression, can be explained by the absorption of fast initial partons. We assume the absorption to be x1-dependent and determine the empirical form of this dependence. Several reactions at different energies are described with the same parametrization of the absorption cross section. The factorization theorem constraints and some alternative models are discussed. The obtained description of data allows to make conclusions about the origin of nuclear …
The effects of non-zero baryonic chemical potential on the drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks propagating through a baryon rich quark gluon plasma have been studied. The nuclear suppression factor, $R_{\mathrm AA}$ for non-photonic single electron spectra resulting from the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy flavours have been evaluated for low energy collisions. The role of non-zero baryonic chemical potential on $R_{\mathrm AA}$ has been highlighted.
In proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions up to central $S-U$ interactions, the $P_T$-dependence of $J/ψ$ production is determined by initial state parton scattering and pre-resonance nuclear absorption (``normal" $J/ψ$ suppression). The ``anomalous" $J/ψ$ suppression in $Pb-Pb$ collisions must reduce the normal $P_T$ broadening, since it occurs mainly in the central part of the interaction region, where also initial state parton scattering and nuclear absorption are strongest. We thus expect for $< P_T^2 >$ in $Pb-Pb$ collisions a turn-over and decrease with increasing $E_T$.
We present new results based on an improved version of the Glauber model, used to describe the nuclear absorption of J/psi in reactions between nuclei at high energy. The excitation of the colour degrees of freedom of nucleons, due to collisions mediated by one-gluon exchange, is taken into account. It is found that the proposed mechanism leads to larger nuclear absorption of J/psi than previously considered.
In this work the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear modification ratio is evaluated for the dilepton production at RHIC and LHC, using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. The ratio is compared for two distinct dilepton mass values, concerning the transverse momentum distribution, and a suppression of the Cronin peak is verified even for large mass. The nuclear modification ratio suppression in the dilepton rapidity spectra, as obtained for hadrons at RHIC, is verified for LHC energies at large transverse momentum, although not present at RHIC energies. These res…
Recent results from proton(deuteron)-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies have shown an unexpected suppression of excited quarkonium states as compared to their ground states. In particular, stronger suppression of the $ψ(2S)$ relative to the $J/ψ$ has been detected. Similar observations were made at lower energies and were easily explained by nuclear absorption. At higher energies, a similar explanation would violate the Heisenberg principle, since the calculations based on the uncertainty principle lead to a charmonium formation time expected to be larger than the nuclear radius, whic…
In high energy nuclear collisions, the Glauber model is commonly used to evaluate $J/ψ$ suppression due to inelastic interaction with colorless bound nucleons. This requires an effective value for the $J/ψ$-nucleon absorption cross section which is larger than theoretically expected. On the other hand, multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions mediated by color exchange interactions, excite their color degrees of freedom. We investigate the importance of this effect and conclude that the related corrections are important to explain the effective value extrapolated from experiment.
We present a systematic, and fully analytic, study of the ratio R_{pA} between the gluon distribution in a nucleus and that in a proton scaled up by the atomic number A. We consider initial conditions of the McLerran-Venugopalan type, and quantum evolution in the Color Glass Condensate, with both fixed and running coupling. We perform an analytic study of the Cronin effect in the initial conditions and point out an interesting difference between saturating effects and twist effects in the nuclear gluon distribution. We show that the distribution of the gluons which make up the condensate in th…

We calculate nuclear suppression $R_{AA}$ of heavy quarks produced from the initial fusion of partons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We take the shadowing as well as the energy loss suffered by them while passing through Quark Gluon Plasma into account. We obtain results for charm and bottom quarks at several rapidities using different mechanisms for energy loss, to see if we can distinguish between them.
We discuss the measured nuclear suppression of p + pbar production in 200 AGeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC within radiative energy loss. For the AKK set of fragmentation functions, proton production is dominated by gluons, giving rise to the expectation that the nuclear suppression for p + pbar should be stronger than for pions due to the stronger coupling of gluons to the quenching medium. Using a hydrodynamical description for the soft matter evolution, we show that this is indeed seen in the calculation. However, the expected suppression factors for pions and protons are sufficiently similar t…
The study of nuclear effects for J/ψ production in proton-nucleus collisions is crucial for a correct interpretation of the J/ψ suppression patterns experimentally observed in heavy-ion collisions. By means of three representative sets of nuclear parton distribution, the energy loss effect in the initial state and the nuclear absorption effect in the final state are taken into account in the uniform framework of the Glauber model. A leading order phenomenological analysis is performed on J/ψ production cross-section ratios RW/Be(xF) for the E866 experimental data. The J/ψ suppression is invest…
In high energy nuclear collisions, the conventional Glauber model is commonly used to evaluate the contribution to $J/ψ$ suppression originating from the inelastic interaction with colorless bound nucleons. This requires an effective value for the $J/ψ$-nucleon absorption cross section which is larger than theoretically expected. On the other hand, multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions mediated by color exchange interactions, excite their color degrees of freedom. We investigate the importance of this effect and find that these excited states provide a larger cross section for $J/ψ$ absorption. …
We have analyzed the NA58 data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions. $J/ψ$ production is assumed to be a two step process, (i) formation of $c\bar{c}$ pair, which is accurately calculable in QCD and (ii) formation of $J/ψ$ meson from the $c\bar{c}$ pair, which can be conveniently parameterized. In a pA/AA collision, a $c\bar{c}$ pair gain relative square momentum as it passes through the nuclear medium and some of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs can gain enough momentum to cross the threshold to become an open charm meson, leading to suppression in pA/AA collisions. A new prescription is proposed for…
We use the Glauber-Gribov multiple scattering formalism and the theory of leading twist nuclear shadowing to develop a method for the calculation of leading twist hard coherent diffraction in hadron-nucleus processes. We demonstrate that soft multiple rescatterings lead to the factorization breaking of hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering, which is larger than in hadron-nucleon scattering. At the LHC and RHIC kinematics, we compare the hard diffractive to e.m.~mechanisms of hard coherent production of two jets in proton-nucleus scattering. We study the x_{\Pomeron}, βand A-dependence …
The Coulomb corrections to the cross section of $e^+e^-$ pair production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions are calculated in the next-to-leading approximation with respect to the parameter $L=\ln γ_Aγ_B$ ($γ_{A,B}$ are the Lorentz factors of colliding nuclei). We found considerable reduction of the Coulomb corrections even for large $γ_Aγ_B$ due to the suppression of the production of $e^+e^-$ pair with the total energy of the order of a few electron masses in the rest frame of one of the nuclei. Our result explains why the deviation from the Born result were not observed in the experime…
$J/ψ$ suppression in p-A collisions is studied by considering the nuclear effects on parton distribution, energy loss of beam proton and the finial state energy loss of color octet $c\overline{c}$. The leading-order computations for $J/ψ$ production cross-section ratios $R_{W/Be}(x_{F})$ are presented and compared with the selected E866 experimental data with the $c\overline{c}$ remaining colored on its entire path in the medium. It is shown that the combination of the different nuclear effects accounts quite well for the observed $J/ψ$ suppression in the experimental data. It is found that th…
We introduce an effective chiral Lagrangian with a dilaton responsible for the trace anomaly in QCD. As the "dilaton limit" is taken, which drives a system to near chiral restoration density, a linear sigma model emerges from the highly non-linear structure. A striking prediction is that the vector-meson--nucleon interaction gets strongly suppressed when the dilaton limit is approached. Its phenomenological implications for the thermodynamics of dense baryonic matter are briefly discussed.
We investigate the influence of modified nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) on high-pT hadron production at RHIC and LHC energies using a pQCD-improved parton model. For application at RHIC, we focus on the possible contribution of the EMC modification of the nuclear PDFs in the x > 0.3 region to the observed suppression of pi0 production at pT > 10 GeV/c in dAu collisions. We study three different parameterizations of the nuclear PDF modifications and find that they give consistent results for R_dAu(pT) for neutral pions in the region 10 GeV/c < pT < 20 GeV/c. We find that the EMC s…

The approach to problem of nuclear shadowing based on Gribov Reggeon calculus is presented. Here the total cross section of $h A$ interaction is found in a parameter-free description, employing the new data on the gluon density of the Pomeron, measured with high precision at HERA, as input. The model is then applied for calculation of $J/ψ$ production in $d Au$ collisions at top RHIC energy. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are in a very good agreement with the PHENIX data, and further predictions for the $J/ψ$ suppression in $p Pb$ collisions at coming soon LHC are made.
We study the effects of the equation of state on the nuclear suppression of heavy flavours in quark gluon plasma and estimate the initial entropy density of the system produced at the highest RHIC energy. For this purpose we have used the experimental data on the charged particle multiplicity and the nuclear suppression of single electron spectra originating from the semi-leptonic decays of open charm and beauty mesons. We have used inputs from lattice QCD to minimize the model dependence of the results. We obtain the value of the initial entropy density which varies from 20 to 59 /fm$^3$ depe…
Interpreting the J/psi suppression reported in nucleus--nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC requires the quantitative understanding of cold nuclear matter effects, such as the inelastic rescattering of J/psi states in nuclei or the nuclear modification of parton densities. With respect to our former Glauber analysis, we include in the present work the new PHENIX d--Au measurements, and analyze as well all existing data using the EPS08 nuclear parton densities recently released. The largest suppression reported in the new PHENIX analysis leads in turn to an increase of sigma from 3.5 +/- 0.3 mb …
We derive a quantum mechanical upper bound on the amount of radiative energy loss suffered by high energy quarks and gluons in nuclear matter. The bound shows that the nuclear suppression observed in quarkonium production at high $x_F$ cannot be explained in terms of energy loss of the initial or final parton states. We also argue that no nuclear suppression is expected in the photoproduction of light hadrons at large $x_F$.
In this paper, our goal is to make a simultaneous analysis of the high- and low-P_T parts of the charged-hadron P_T spectrum measured by the ALICE collaboration in central Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), based on models which have been successfully applied and constrained in Au-Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). For the hydrodynamical modeling with which we obtain the low-P_T spectrum, we have computed the initial conditions based on perturbative QCD (pQCD) minijet production and saturation. The sensitivity of the obtained charged-…
We compute diffractive structure functions for both protons and nuclei in the framework of Color Glass Condensate models with impact parameter dependence. These models have previously been shown to provide good agreement with inclusive F_2 measurements and exclusive vector meson measurements at HERA. For nuclei, they provide good (parameter free) agreement with the inclusive F_2 data. We demonstrate good agreement of our computations with HERA measurements on inclusive diffraction. We extend our analysis to nuclei and predict the pattern of enhancement and suppression of the diffractive struct…
RHIC data on high-$p_T$ hadron production display strong suppression in a wide rapidity region, indicating strong induced energy loss for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons. We investigate the interplay of energy loss and rapidity dependence in a perturbative QCD improved parton model, and estimate the opacity of the produced hot matter in $AuAu$ collisions at energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ $A$GeV and 63 $A$GeV at different rapidity values. Direction-dependent suppression offers the possibility to study the geometry of the hot matter.
Based on a Glauber model, a statistical analysis of all mid-rapidity J/psi hadroproduction and leptoproduction data on nuclear targets is carried out. This allows us to determine the J/psi-nucleon inelastic cross section, whose knowledge is crucial to interpret the J/psi suppression observed in heavy-ion collisions, at SPS and at RHIC. The values of sigma are extracted from each experiment. A clear tension between the different data sets is reported. The global fit of all data gives sigma=3.4+/-0.2 mb, which is significantly smaller than previous estimates. A similar value, sigma=3.5+/-0.2 mb,…
We perform a quantitative analysis of the nuclear modification factor in deuteron--gold collisions R(dAu) within the Color Glass Condensate approach, and compare our results with the recent data from RHIC experiments. Our model leads to Cronin enhancement at mid-rapidity, while at forward rapidities it predicts strong suppression of R(dAu) at all pT due to low-x evolution. We demonstrate that our results are consistent with the data for dAu charged hadron spectra, R(dAu) and R(CP) recently reported for rapidities in the interval eta=0--3.2 by the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. We also make a predi…
Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the quarkonia suppression in a thermal QCD medium created at heavy ion collisions is a complex interplay of various physical processes. In this article we put together most of these processes in a unified way to calculate the charmonium survival probability (nuclear modification factor) at energies available at relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) and large hadron collider (LHC) experiments. We have included shadowing as the dominant cold nuclear matter (CNM) effect. Further, gluo-dissociation and collision damping has been included wh…
