ATLAS (Australia Telescope Large Area Survey) is a wide deep radio survey which is distinguished by its comprehensive multi-wavelength approach. ATLAS is creating a large dataset of radio-selected galaxies for studying the evolution and inter-relationship of star-forming and active galaxies. Although the project is far from complete, we are already starting to answer some of these questions, and have stumbled across three surprises along the way: * FRI/FRII radio-loud AGN embedded within spiral galaxies, * radio-bright AGN which are unexpectedly faint in the infrared, and which may be at high redshift * IR-luminous radio-quiet AGN which are partly responsible for the wide variations in reported values of the radio-infrared ratio These and other observations suggest that the AGN activity and star formation become increasingly inter-dependent at high redshifts.
The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) has surveyed seven square degrees of sky around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and the European Large Area ISO Survey - South 1 (ELAIS-S1) fields at 1.4 GHz. ATLAS aims to reach a uniform sensitivity of $10 μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$ rms over the entire region with data release 1 currently reaching $\sim30 μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$ rms. Here we present 466 new spectroscopic redshifts for radio sources in ATLAS as part of our optical follow-up program. Of the 466 radio sources with new spectroscopic redshifts, 142 have star-forming optical spectra, 282 show e…
Context. The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) aims to image a 7 deg2 region centred on the European Large Area ISO Survey - South 1 (ELAIS-S1) field and the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) at 1.4 GHz with high sensitivity (up to ~10 \muJy) to study the evolution of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) over a wide range of cosmic time. Aims. We present here ancillary radio observations at a frequency of 2.3 GHz obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The main goal of this is to study the radio spectra of an unprecedented large sample of…
We present here a new spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting approach that we adopt to select radio-excess sources amongst distant star-forming galaxies in the GOODS-Herschel (North) field and to reveal the presence of hidden, highly obscured AGN. Through extensive SED analysis of 458 galaxies with radio 1.4 GHz and mid-IR 24 um detections using some of the deepest Chandra X-ray, Spitzer and Herschel infrared, and VLA radio data available to date, we have robustly identified a sample of 51 radio-excess AGN (~1300 deg^-2) out to redshift z~3. These radio-excess AGN have a significantly lowe…
We present the high angular resolution catalogue for the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey, using the high angular resolution 6-km antenna data at the baselines of ~ 4500 m of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We have used the data to produce the visibility catalogue that separates the compact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) from the extended radio sources at the 0.15 arcsec angular scale, corresponding to the linear size scale of 1 kpc at redshifts higher than 0.7. We find the radio population at 20 GHz to be dominated by compact AGNs constituting 77% of the total sources in…
We explore the question of whether low and moderate luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are preferentially found in galaxies that are undergoing a transition from active star formation to quiescence. This notion has been suggested by studies of the UV-to-optical colors of AGN hosts, which find them to be common among galaxies in the so-called "Green Valley", a region of galaxy color space believed to be composed mostly of galaxies undergoing star-formation quenching. Combining the deepest current X-ray and Herschel. PACS far-infrared (FIR) observations of the two Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs…
Based on high-resolution, spatially resolved data of 10 z~2 star-forming galaxies from the SINS/zC-SINF survey and LUCI data for 12 additional galaxies, we probe the excitation properties of high-z galaxies and the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN), shocks and photoionization. We explore how these spatially-resolved line ratios can inform our interpretation of integrated emission line ratios obtained at high redshift. Many of our galaxies fall in the `composite' region of the z~0 [NII]/Ha versus [OIII]/Hb diagnostic (BPT) diagram, between star-forming galaxies and those with AGN. Based on…
Infrared-Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) are a class of radio objects found in the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) which have no observable mid-infrared counterpart in the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey. The extended Chandra Deep Field South now has even deeper Spitzer imaging (3.6 to 70 micron) from a number of Legacy surveys. We report the detections of two IFRS sources in IRAC images. The non-detection of two other IFRSs allows us to constrain the source type. Detailed modeling of the SED of these objects shows that they are consistent with high redshift (…
The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) is the widest deep radio survey ever attempted, covering 7 square degrees of sky in two separate fields, with extensive multi-wavelength data. The primary aim of this research is to investigate all possible discriminants between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-formation (SF) in ATLAS, with the goal of comparing discriminants, identifying the strengths and weaknesses, and establishing an optimum technique given the available data. Ultimately, all possible discriminants will be utilized, including optical/infrared SEDs, spectroscopic line w…
Our current understanding of radio-loud AGN comes predominantly from studies at frequencies of 5 GHz and below. With the recent completion of the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey, we can now gain insight into the high-frequency radio properties of AGN. This paper presents supplementary information on the AT20G sources in the form of optical counterparts and redshifts. Optical counterparts were identified using the SuperCOSMOS database and redshifts were found from either the 6dF Galaxy survey or the literature. We also report 144 new redshifts. For AT20G sources outside the Galactic p…
Using the LOWZ and CMASS samples of the ninth data release (DR9) from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), I investigate properties of star forming galaxies and AGNs. The CMASS sample seriously suffers from the radial selection effect, even within the redshift 0.44<z<0.6, which will lead to statistical conclusions in the CMASS sample being less likely robust. In the LOWZ sample, the fraction of star-forming galaxies is nearly constant from the lowest density regime to the densest regime; the AGN fraction is also insensitive to the local environment. In addition, I note …
We present a catalog of 191 extragalactic sources detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) at 148 GHz and/or 218 GHz in the 2008 Southern survey. Flux densities span 14-1700 mJy, and we use source spectral indices derived using ACT-only data to divide our sources into two sub-populations: 167 radio galaxies powered by central active galactic nuclei (AGN), and 24 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). We cross-identify 97% of our sources (166 of the AGN and 19 of the DSFGs) with those in currently available catalogs. When combined with flux densities from the Australian Telescope 20 GHz …
We quantify the presence of Active Galactic nuclei (AGN) in a mass-complete (M_* >5e10 M_sun) sample of 123 star-forming and quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5, using X-ray data from the 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) survey. 41+/-7% of the galaxies are detected directly in X-rays, 22+/-5% with rest-frame 0.5-8 keV luminosities consistent with hosting luminous AGN (L_0.5-8keV > 3e42 ergs/s). The latter fraction is similar for star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and does not depend on galaxy stellar mass, suggesting that perhaps luminous AGN are triggered by external effects such as me…
We present new results for a sample of 33 narrow-lined UV-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs), identified in the course of a spectroscopic survey for star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2-3. The rest-frame UV composite spectrum for our AGN sample shows several emission lines characteristic of AGNs, as well as interstellar absorption features seen in star-forming Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). We report a detection of NIV]1486, which has been observed in high-redshift radio galaxies, as well as in rare optically-selected quasars. The UV continuum slope of the composite spectrum is significantly redde…
We have studied the star-formation and AGN activity of massive galaxies in the redshift range $z=0.4-2$, which are detected in a deep survey field using the AKARI InfraRed (IR) astronomical satellite and {\em Subaru} telescope toward the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). The AKARI/IRC Mid-InfraRed (MIR) multiband photometry is used to trace their star-forming activities with the Polycyclic-Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions, which is also used to distinguish star-forming populations from AGN dominated ones and to estimate the Star Formation Rate (SFR) derived from their total emitting IR (TIR) lumi…
We study a combined sample of 264 star-forming, 51 composite, and 73 active galaxies using optical spectra from SDSS and mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. We examine optical and mid-IR spectroscopic diagnostics that probe the amount of star formation and relative energetic contributions from star formation and an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Overall we find good agreement between optical and mid-IR diagnostics. Misclassifications of galaxies based on the SDSS spectra are rare despite the presence of dust obscuration. The luminosity of the [NeII] 12.8 μm em…
We present the AGN, star-forming, and morphological properties of a sample of 13 MIR-luminous (f(24) > 700uJy) IR-bright/optically-faint galaxies (IRBGs, f(24)/f(R) > 1000). While these z~2 sources were drawn from deep Chandra fields with >200 ks X-ray coverage, only 7 are formally detected in the X-ray and four lack X-ray emission at even the 2 sigma level. Spitzer IRS spectra, however, confirm that all of the sources are AGN-dominated in the mid-IR, although half have detectable PAH emission responsible for ~25% of their mid-infrared flux density. When combined with other samples, this indic…
We present the results of recent studies on the co-evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using Herschel far-infrared and Chandra X-ray observations in the Boötes survey region. For a sample of star-forming (SF) galaxies, we find a strong correlation between galactic star formation rate and the average SMBH accretion rate in SF galaxies. Recent studies have shown that star formation and AGN accretion are only weakly correlated for individual AGN, but this may be due to the short variability timescale of AGN relative to star formation. Averaging over the full AGN populat…
We use new near-infrared spectroscopic observations to investigate the nature and evolution of the most luminous Hα(Ha) emitters at z~0.8-2.23, which evolve strongly in number density over this period, and compare them to more typical Ha emitters. We study 59 luminous Ha emitters with $L_{Hα}>L_{Hα}^*$, roughly equally split per redshift slice at z~0.8, 1.47 and 2.23 from the HiZELS and CF-HiZELS surveys. We find that, overall, 30$\pm$8% are AGN (80$\pm$30% of these AGN are broad-line AGN, BL-AGN), and we find little to no evolution in the AGN fraction with redshift, within the errors. However…
Spitzer IRAC selection is a powerful tool for identifying luminous AGN. For deep IRAC data, however, the AGN selection wedges currently in use are heavily contaminated by star-forming galaxies, especially at high redshift. Using the large samples of luminous AGN and high-redshift star-forming galaxies in COSMOS, we redefine the AGN selection criteria for use in deep IRAC surveys. The new IRAC criteria are designed to be both highly complete and reliable, and incorporate the best aspects of the current AGN selection wedges and of infrared power-law selection while excluding high redshift star-f…
We investigate the effect of active galactic nucleus (AGN) variability on the observed connection between star formation and black hole accretion in extragalactic surveys. Recent studies have reported relatively weak correlations between observed AGN luminosities and the properties of AGN hosts, which has been interpreted to imply that there is no direct connection between AGN activity and star formation. However, AGNs may be expected to vary significantly on a wide range of timescales (from hours to Myr) that are far shorter than the typical timescale for star formation (>~100 Myr). This vari…
We use deep 70, 100 and 160 um observations taken with PACS, the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer on board of Herschel, as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) guaranteed time, to study the relation between star formation rate and environment at redshift ~ 1 in the GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields. We use the SDSS spectroscopic catalog to build the local analog and study the evolution of the star formation activity dependence on the environment. At z ~ 1 we observe a reversal of the relation between star formation rate and local density, confirming the results based on Spitzer 24 um …
We present the clustering properties of a complete sample of 968 radio sources detected at 1.4 GHz by the VLA-COSMOS survey with radio fluxes brighter than 0.15 mJy. 92% have redshift determinations from the Laigle et al. (2016) catalogue. Based on their radio-luminosity, these objects have been divided into two populations of 644 AGN and 247 star-forming galaxies. By fixing the slope of the auto-correlation function to gamma=2, we find r_0=11.7^{+1.0}_{-1.1} Mpc for the clustering length of the whole sample, while r_0=11.2^{+2.5}_{-3.3} Mpc and r_0=7.8^{+1.6}_{-2.1} Mpc (r_0=6.8^{+1.4}_{-1.8}…
Despite their relative sparseness, during the recent years it has become more and more clear that extragalactic radio sources (both AGN and star-forming galaxies) constitute an extremely interesting mix of populations, not only because of their intrinsic value, but also for their fundamental role in shaping our Universe the way we see it today. Indeed, radio-active AGN are now thought to be the main players involved in the evolution of massive galaxies and clusters. At the same time, thanks to the possibility of being observed up to very high redshifts, radio galaxies can also provide crucial …
We report the detection of ubiquitous powerful nuclear outflows in massive (> 10^11 Msun) z~2 star-forming galaxies (SFGs), which are plausibly driven by an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The sample consists of the eight most massive SFGs from our SINS/zC-SINF survey of galaxy kinematics with the imaging spectrometer SINFONI, six of which have sensitive high-resolution adaptive optics (AO) assisted observations. All of the objects are disks hosting a significant stellar bulge. The spectra in their central regions exhibit a broad component in Halpha and forbidden [NII] and [SII] line emission, …
VLA 1.4 GHz (rms noise ~0.012 mJy) and MIPS 24 and 70 micron (rms noise ~0.02 and ~1.7 mJy, respectively) observations covering the 2 square degree COSMOS field are combined with an extensive multi-wavelength data set to study the evolution of the IR-radio relation at intermediate and high redshift. With ~4500 sources -- of which ~30% have spectroscopic redshifts -- the current sample is significantly larger than previous ones used for the same purpose. Both monochromatic IR/radio flux ratios (q24 & q70), as well as the ratio of the total IR and the 1.4 GHz luminosity (qTIR) are used as indica…
We study the properties of a sample of 211 heavily-obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) candidates in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South selecting objects with f_24/f_R>1000 and R-K>4.5. Of these, 18 were detected in X-rays and found to be obscured AGN with neutral hydrogen column densities of ~10^23 cm^-2. In the X-ray undetected sample, the following evidence suggests a large fraction of heavily-obscured (Compton Thick) AGN: (i) The stacked X-ray signal of the sample is strong, with an observed ratio of soft to hard X-ray counts consistent with a population of ~90% heavily obscured AGN …
We compare the average star formation (SF) activity in X-ray selected AGN hosts with mass-matched control inactive galaxies, including star forming and quiescent sources, at 0.5<z<2.5. Recent observations carried out by PACS, the 60-210um Herschel photometric camera, in GOODS-S, GOODS-N and COSMOS allow us to unbiasedly estimate the far-IR luminosity, and hence the SF properties, of the two samples. Accurate AGN host stellar masses are measured by decomposing their total emission into the stellar and nuclear components. We find a higher average SF activity in AGN hosts with respect to non-AGNs.…
We analyze a sample of galaxies chosen to have F24>0.5 mJy and satisfy a certain IRAC color criterion. IRS spectra yield redshifts, spectral types, and PAH luminosities, to which we add multi-wavelength broadband photometry. Stellar population modeling and IRS spectra together demonstrate that the double criteria used to select this sample have efficiently isolated massive star-forming galaxies at z~1.9. This is the first starburst-dominated ULIRG sample at high redshift with total infrared luminosity measured directly from FIR and millimeter photometry, and as such gives us the first accurate…
Fast and energetic winds are invoked by galaxy formation models as essential processes in the evolution of galaxies. These outflows can be powered either by star-formation and/or AGN activity, but the relative dominance of the two mechanisms is still under debate. We use spectroscopic stacking analysis to study the properties of the low-ionization phase of the outflow in a sample of 1330 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and 79 X-ray detected (42<log(L_X)<45 erg/s) Type 2 AGN at 1.7<z<4.6 selected from a compilation of deep optical spectroscopic surveys, mostly zCOSMOS-Deep and VUDS. We measure mea…
Recent observations of AGN activity in massive galaxies (log Mstar / Msun > 10.4) show that: 1) at z < 1, AGN-hosting galaxies do not show enhanced merger signatures compared to normal galaxies, 2) also at z < 1, most AGNs are hosted by quiescent galaxies; and 3) at z > 1, percentage of AGNs in star forming galaxies increases and becomes comparable to AGN percentage in quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2. How can major mergers explain AGN activity in massive quiescent galaxies which have no merger features and no star formation to indicate recent galaxy merger? By matching merger events in a cosmologi…
Dark matter haloes in which galaxies reside are likely to have a significant impact on their evolution. We investigate the link between dark matter haloes and their constituent galaxies by measuring the angular two-point correlation function of radio sources, using recently released 3 GHz imaging over $\sim 2 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ of the COSMOS field. We split the radio source population into Star Forming Galaxies (SFGs) and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), and further separate the AGN into radiatively efficient and inefficient accreters. Restricting our analysis to $z<1$, we find SFGs have a bias, $…
We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical size measurements of AGN hosts and star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS field, enabled by high-resolution ALMA/1 mm (0.1 arcsec - 0.4 arcsec) and HST/F814W imaging (~ 0.1 arcsec). Our sample includes 27 galaxies at z<2.5, classified as infrared-selected AGN (3 sources), X-ray selected AGN (4 sources), and non-AGN star-forming galaxies (20 sources), for which high-resolution Band 6/7 ALMA images are available at 1 mm from our own observing program as well as archival observations. The sizes and SFR surface densities measured from both ALMA/1 m…
We present [OIII 5007A] observations of the star forming galaxy HDF-BMZ1299 (z=1.598) using Keck Observatory's Adaptive Optics system with the near-infrared integral field spectrograph OSIRIS. Using previous Halpha and [NII] measurements of the same source, we are able for the first time to use spatially resolved observations to place a high-redshift galaxy's substructure on a traditional HII diagnostic diagram. We find that HDF-BMZ1299's spatially concentrated nebular ratios in the central ~1.5 kiloparsec (0."2) are best explained by the presence of an AGN: log([NII]/Halpha)=-0.22+/-0.05 and …
We characterize the incidence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is 0.3 < z < 1 star-forming galaxies by applying multi-wavelength AGN diagnostics (X-ray, optical, mid-infrared, radio) to a sample of galaxies selected at 70-micron from the Far-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy survey (FIDEL). Given the depth of FIDEL, we detect "normal" galaxies on the specific star formation rate (sSFR) sequence as well as starbursting systems with elevated sSFR. We find an overall high occurrence of AGN of 37+/-3%, more than twice as high as in previous studies of galaxies with comparable infrared luminositie…
We use $\sim 1800$ X-ray Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), that span over two orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity, $\rm L_{X,2-10keV} \approx 10^{43-45}\,ergs^{-1}$, and compare their star-formation rate (SFR) relative to that of non-AGN star-forming systems, at $\rm 0.5<z<1.5$. For that purpose, we compile a reference galaxy catalogue with $\sim 17000$ sources. Both samples have the same photometric coverage, from optical to far-infrared. We construct the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all sources and fit them using the CIGALE code…
We investigate the relationship between the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass ($M_*$) and molecular gas mass ($M_{H_2}$) for local star-forming galaxies. We further investigate these relationships for high-z (z=1-3) galaxies and for the hosts of a local sample of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We explore which of these dependencies are intrinsic and which are an indirect by-product by employing partial correlation coefficients and random forest regression. We find that for local star-forming galaxies, high-z galaxies, and AGN host galaxies, the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation (SK, between $M_{…
In this paper we follow up on our previous detection of nuclear ionized outflows in the most massive (log(M*/Msun) >= 10.9) z~1-3 star-forming galaxies (Forster Schreiber et al.), by increasing the sample size by a factor of six (to 44 galaxies above log(M*/Msun) >= 10.9) from a combination of the SINS/zC-SINF, LUCI, GNIRS, and KMOS^3D spectroscopic surveys. We find a fairly sharp onset of the incidence of broad nuclear emission (FWHM in the Ha, [NII], and [SII] lines ~ 450-5300 km/s), with large [NII]/Ha ratios, above log(M*/Msun) ~ 10.9, with about two thirds of the galaxies in this mass ran…
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 4 (DR 4), we investigate the spatial distribution of low and high surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs and HSBGs, respectively). In particular, we focus our attention on the influence of interactions between galaxies on the star formation strength in the redshift range $0.01 < z < 0.1$. With cylinder counts and projected distance to the first and fifth-nearest neighbor as environment tracers, we find that LSBGs tend to have a lack of companions compared to HSBGs at small scales ($<2$ Mpc). Regarding the interactions, we have evidence that th…
The cosmic evolution of bias of different source populations with underlying dark matter density field in post reionization era can shed light on large scale structures. Studying the angular and spatial distribution of different compact sources using deep radio catalogue at low-frequency is essential to understand the matter distribution of the present Universe. Here, we investigate the relationship of luminous matter with their host dark matter haloes by measuring the angular and spatial clustering of sources (two-point statistics), using deep radio observation of ELAIS N1 (EN1) field with up…
We present a structural study of 182 obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) at z<=1.5, selected in the COSMOS field from their extreme infrared to X-ray luminosity ratio and their negligible emission at optical wavelengths. We fit optical to far-infrared spectral energy distributions and analyze deep HST imaging to derive the physical and morphological properties of their host galaxies. We find that such galaxies are more compact than normal star-forming sources at similar redshift and stellar mass, and we show that it is not an observational bias related to the emission of the AGN. Based on t…
We present a measurement of the average supermassive black hole accretion rate (BHAR) as a function of star formation rate (SFR) for galaxies in the redshift range 0.25<z<0.8. We study a sample of 1,767 far-IR selected star-forming galaxies in the 9 deg^2 Boötes multiwavelength survey field. The SFR is estimated using 250 micron observations from the Herschel Space Observatory, for which the contribution from the AGN is minimal. In this sample, 121 AGNs are directly identified using X-ray or mid-IR selection criteria. We combined these detected AGNs and an X-ray stacking analysis for undetecte…
A two-parameter semi-empirical model is presented for the spectral energy distributions of galaxies with contributions to their infrared-submillimeter-radio emission from both star formation and accretion disk-powered activity. This model builds upon a previous one-parameter family of models for star-forming galaxies, and includes an update to the mid-infrared emission using an average template obtained from Spitzer Space Telescope observations of normal galaxies. Star-forming/AGN diagnostics based on PAH equivalent widths and broadband infrared colors are presented, and example mid-infrared A…
We use the new catalogue by Laigle et al. (2016) to provide a full census of VLA-COSMOS radio sources. We identify 90% of such sources and sub-divide them into AGN and star-forming galaxies on the basis of their radio luminosity. The AGN sample is COMPLETE with respect to radio selection at all z<3.5. Out of 704 AGN, 272 have a counterpart in the Herschel maps. By exploiting the better statistics of the new sample, we confirm the results of Magliocchetti et al. (2014): the probability for a radio-selected AGN to be detected at FIR wavelengths is both a function of radio luminosity and redshift…
Cluster mergers may play a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies. Stroe et al. (2014) revealed unexpected over-densities of candidate H$α$ emitters near the ~1 Mpc-wide shock fronts of the massive (~2x10$^{15}$M$_{\odot}$) "Sausage" merging cluster, CIZA J2242.8+5301. We used Keck/DEIMOS and WHT/AF2 to confirm 83 H$α$ emitters in and around the merging cluster. We find that cluster star-forming galaxies in the hottest X-ray gas and/or in the cluster sub-cores (away from the shock fronts) show high [SII]6716/[SII]6761 and high [SII]6716/H$α$, implying very low elec…
By exploiting the VLA-COSMOS and the Herschel-PEP surveys, we investigate the Far Infrared (FIR) properties of radio-selected AGN. To this purpose, from VLA-COSMOS we considered the 1537, F[1.4 GHz]>0.06 mJy sources with a reliable redshift estimate, and sub-divided them into star-forming galaxies and AGN solely on the basis of their radio luminosity. The AGN sample is complete with respect to radio selection at all z<~3.5. 832 radio sources have a counterpart in the PEP catalogue. 175 are AGN. Their redshift distribution closely resembles that of the total radio-selected AGN population, and e…
Proximity zone fossils (PZFs) are ionization signatures around recently active galactic nuclei (AGN) where metal species in the circumgalactic medium remain over-ionized after the AGN has shut-off due to their long recombination timescales. We explore cosmological zoom hydrodynamic simulations using the EAGLE model paired with a non-equilibrium ionization and cooling module including time-variable AGN radiation to model PZFs around star-forming, disk galaxies in the z~0.2 Universe. Previous simulations typically under-estimated the O VI content of galactic haloes, but we show that plausible PZ…
We present the results from our narrow-band imaging surveys of HAEs at z=2.2 and z=2.5 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep survey Field with near-infrared camera MOIRCS on Subaru Telescope. We have constructed a clean sample of 63 star-forming galaxies at z=2.2 and 46 at z=2.5. For 12 (or ~92%) out of 13 Hαemitters (HAEs) at z=2.2, their Hαemission lines have been successfully detected by the spectroscopy. While about 42% of the red, massive HAEs with M_*>10^{10.8} M_\odot contain AGNs, most of the blue, less massive ones are likely to be star-forming galaxies. This suggests that the AGN may play an…
(Abridged) In the last decade several massive molecular gas reservoirs were found <100 kpc distance from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), residing in gas-rich companion galaxies. The study of AGN-gas-rich companion systems opens the opportunity to determine whether the stellar mass of massive local galaxies was formed in their host after a merger event or outside of their host galaxy in a close starbursting companion and later incorporated via mergers. We study the quasar-companion galaxy system of SMM J04135+10277 (z=2.84) and investigate the expected frequency of quasar-starburst galaxy pairs …
We investigate the presence of ionised gas outflows in a sample of 141 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $1.2<z<2.6$ from the KLEVER (KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review) survey. Our sample covers an exceptionally wide range of stellar masses, $8.1<\log(M_\star/M_{\odot})<11.3$, pushing outflow studies into the dwarf regime thanks to gravitationally lensed objects. We stack optical rest-frame emission lines (H$β$, [OIII], H$α$ and [NII]) in different mass bins and seek for tracers of gas outflows by using a novel, physically motivated method that improves over the widely used, …
We present our very recent results on the sub-mJy radio source populations at 1.4 GHz based on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South VLA survey, which reaches ~ 30 μJy, with details on their number counts, evolution, and luminosity functions. The sub-mJy radio sky turns out to be a complex mix of star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN evolving at a similar, strong rate and declining radio-loud AGN. While the well-known flattening of the radio number counts below 1 mJy is mostly due to star-forming galaxies, these sources and AGN make up an approximately equal fraction of the sub-mJy sky. Ou…
The combination of the SDSS and the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) currently offers the largest and most homogeneously selected sample of nearby galaxies for investigating the relation between X-ray nuclear emission, nebular line-emission, black hole masses, and properties of the associated stellar populations. We present here novel constraints that both X-ray luminosity Lx and X-ray spectral energy distribution bring to the galaxy evolutionary sequence H II -> Seyfert/Transition Object -> LINER -> Passive suggested by optical data. In particular, we show that both Lx and Gamma, the s…
We present the evolutionary properties and luminosity functions of the radio sources belonging to the Chandra Deep Field South VLA survey, which reaches a flux density limit at 1.4 GHz of 43 microJy at the field center and redshift ~5, and which includes the first radio-selected complete sample of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN). We use a new, comprehensive classification scheme based on radio, far- and near-IR, optical, and X-ray data to disentangle star-forming galaxies from AGN and radio-quiet from radio-loud AGN. We confirm our previous result that star-forming galaxies become dom…
