The physical and chemical conditions in young protoplanetary disks set the boundary conditions for planet formation. Although the dust in disks is relatively easily detected as a far-IR photometric ``excess'' over the expected photospheric emission, much less is known about the gas phase. It seems clear that an abrupt transition from massive optically thick disks (gas-rich structures where only ~1% of the total mass is in the form of dust) to tenuous debris disks almost devoid of gas occurs at ~10^7 years, by which time the majority of at least the giant planets must have formed. Indeed, these planets are largely gaseous and thus they must assemble before the gas disk dissipates. Spectroscopic studies of the disk gas content at different evolutive stages are thus critical. Far-IR water vapor lines and atomic fine structure lines from abundant gas reservoirs (e.g., [OI]63um, [SI]56um, [SiII]34um) are robust tracers of the gas in disks. Spectrometers on board Herschel will detect some of these lines toward the closest, youngest and more massive protoplanetary disks. However, according to models, Herschel will not reach the required sensitivity to (1) detect the gas residual in more evolved and tenuous transational disks that are potentially forming planets and (2) detect the gas emission from less massive protoplanetary disks around the most numerous stars in the Galaxy (M-type and cooler dwarfs). Both are unique goals for SPICA/SAFARI. Besides, SAFARI will be able to detect the far-IR modes of water ice at ~44 and ~62um, and thus allow water ice to be observed in many protoplanetary systems and fully explore its impact on planetary formation and evolution.
We present high resolution spectroscopy of mid-infrared molecular emission from two very active T Tauri stars, AS 205 N and DR Tau. In addition to measuring high signal-to-noise line profiles of water, we report the first spectrally resolved mid-infrared line profiles of HCN emission from protoplanetary disks. The similar line profiles and temperatures of the HCN and water emission indicate that they arise in the same volume of the disk atmosphere, within 1-2AU of the star. The results support the earlier suggestion that the observed trend of increasing HCN/water emission with disk mass is a c…
It is generally assumed that magnetic fields play an important role in the formation and evolution of protoplanetary disks. One way of observationally constraining magnetic fields is to measure polarized emission and absorption produced by magnetically aligned elongated dust grains. The fact that radiation also becomes linearly polarized by light scattering at optical to millimeter wavelengths complicates magnetic field studies. We characterize the linear polarization of mid-infrared radiation due to scattering of the stellar radiation and dust thermal re-emission radiation (self-scattering). …
Far-infrared and (sub)millimeter fluxes can be used to study dust in protoplanetary disks, the building blocks of planets. Here, we combine observations from the Herschel Space Observatory with ancillary data of 284 protoplanetary disks in the Taurus, Chamaeleon I, and Ophiuchus star-forming regions, covering from the optical to mm/cm wavelengths. We analyze their spectral indices as a function of wavelength and determine their (sub)millimeter slopes when possible. Most disks display observational evidence of grain growth, in agreement with previous studies. No correlation is found between oth…
Protoplanetary disk around a just born young star contains a lot of cosmic dust. especially polycyclic-aromatic-hydrocarbon (PAH), which would become basic component to create biological organics. This study classified many astronomically observed infrared spectra of protoplanetary disks to three typical spectra. Type-A show well known astronomical bands of 6.2, 7.8, 8.6 and 11.3 micrometer. Whereas Type-B included unknown complex bands. Type-(A+B) was their mixed type. We tried to find specific molecule by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation. We found that Type-A could be explained by…
We present the results from a large 850 micron survey of the sigma Orionis cluster using the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The 0.5-degree diameter circular region we surveyed contains 297 young stellar objects with an age estimated at about 3Myr. We detect 9 of these objects, 8 of which have infrared excesses from an inner disc. We also serendipitously detect 3 non-stellar sources at > 5sigma that are likely background submillimetre galaxies. The 9 detected stars have inferred disc masses ranging from 5 to about 17MJup, assuming similar dust properties as Taurus discs an…

To understand how the circumstellar environments of post-AGB stars develop into planetary nebulae, we initiate a systematic study of 2D axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations of protoplanetary nebula (pPN) with a modified ZEUS code. The aim of this first work is to compare the structure of prolate ellipsoidal winds into a stationary ambient medium where both media can be either atomic or molecular. We specifically model the early twin-shock phase which generates a decelerating shell. A thick deformed and turbulent shell grows when an atomic wind expands into an atomic medium. In all other cases…
Tidal encounters in star clusters perturb discs around young protostars. In Cuello et al. (2019a, Paper I) we detailed the dynamical signatures of a stellar flyby in both gas and dust. Flybys produce warped discs, spirals with evolving pitch angles, increasing accretion rates, and disc truncation. Here we present the corresponding observational signatures of these features in optical/near-infrared scattered light and (sub-) millimeter continuum and CO line emission. Using representative prograde and retrograde encounters for direct comparison, we post-process hydrodynamical simulations with ra…
Lifetimes of protoplanetary disks (PPDs) are believed to be severely constrained by material depleting mechanisms, including photoevaporative winds due to the host star radiation or external radiation sources. Most previous studies focused on exploring the role of the winds in the exposed PPDs with a single star; however, exploring the evolution of the circumbinary disks with the photoevaporative winds driven by the host star radiation and external radiation sources deserves further investigation. In this study, we investigate the evolution of the circumbinary PPDs with the photoevaporative wi…
The timescales on which astronomical dust grows remain poorly understood, with important consequences for our understanding of processes like circumstellar disk evolution and planet formation.A number of post-asymptotic giant branch stars are found to host optically thick, dust- and gas-rich circumstellar discs in Keplerian orbits. These discs exhibit evidence of dust evolution, similar to protoplanetary discs; however since post-AGB discs have substantially shorter lifetimes than protoplanetary discs they may provide new insights on the grain-growth process. We examine a sample of post-AGB st…
Protoplanetary disks around young stars are the sites of planet formation. While the dust mass can be estimated using standard methods, determining the gas mass - and thus the amount of material available to form giant planets - has proven to be very difficult. Hydrogen deuteride (HD) is a promising alternative to the commonly-used gas mass tracer, CO. We aim to examine the robustness of HD as tracer of the disk gas mass, specifically the effect of gas mass on the HD FIR emission and its sensitivity to the vertical structure. Deuterium chemistry reactions relevant for HD were implemented in th…
We use two-dimensional Fourier transformation to measure the pitch angle ($φ$) of the dominant spiral Fourier mode of well-defined spiral arms in 13 protoplanetary disks, making use of near-infrared scattered-light images of AB Aur, SAO 206462, MWC 758, V1247 Ori, HD 142527, DZ Cha, LkH$α$ 330, and HD 100453, and ALMA millimeter continuum images of Elias 2-27, IM Lup, AS 205, and HT Lup. We find that the measured pitch angle correlates strongly with disk mass ($M_{D}$), such that more massive protoplanetary disks have smaller pitch angles, following $|φ| = -(7.8\pm1.7)\log(M_{D}/M_{\odot})+(2.…
The first stages of planet formation usually occur when the host star is still in a (relatively) dense star-forming region, where the effects of the external environment may be important for understanding the outcome of the planet formation process. In particular, star-forming regions that contain massive stars have strong far ultraviolet (FUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation fields, which can induce mass-loss from protoplanetary discs due to photoevaporation. In this paper we present a parameter-space study of the expected FUV and EUV fields in N-body simulations of star-forming regio…
We present the largest survey of spectrally resolved mid-infrared water emission to date, with spectra for 11 disks obtained with the Michelle and TEXES spectrographs on Gemini North. Water emission is detected in 6 of 8 disks around classical T Tauri stars. Water emission is not detected in the transitional disks SR 24 N and SR 24 S, in spite of SR 24 S having pre-transitional disk properties like DoAr 44, which does show water emission (Salyk et al. 2015). With R~100,000, the TEXES water spectra have the highest spectral resolution possible at this time, and allow for detailed lineshape anal…
The investigation of polarized light of protoplanetary disks is key for constraining the dust properties, disk morphology and embedded magnetic fields. However, different polarization mechanisms and the diversity of dust grain shapes and compositions lead to ambiguities in the polarization pattern. The so-called "self-scattering" of thermal, re-emitted radiation in the infrared and mm/submm is discussed as a major polarization mechanism. If the net flux of the radiation field is in radial direction, it is commonly assumed that the polarization pattern produced by scattering in a protoplanetary…
DR Tau has been noted for its unusually high variability in comparison with other T Tauri stars. Although it is one of the most extensively studied pre-main sequence stars, observations with millimeter interferometry have so far been relatively limited. We present NOEMA images of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, SO, DCO$^+$, and H$_2$CO toward DR Tau at a resolution of $\sim0.5''$ ($\sim100$ au). In addition to the protoplanetary disk, CO emission reveals an envelope, a faint asymmetric outflow, and a spiral arm with a clump. The $\sim1200$ au extent of the CO arm far exceeds that of the spira…
CO is an important component of a protoplanetary disc as it is one of the most abundant gas phase species. Furthermore, observations of the CO transitions can be used as a diagnostic of the gas, tracing conditions in both the inner and outer disc. We present Herschel/PACS spectroscopy of a sample of 22 Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBEs) and 8 T Tauri stars (TTS), covering the pure rotational CO transitions from J = 14-13 up to J = 49-48. CO is detected in only 5 HAEBEs, AB Aur, HD 36112, HD 97048, HD 100546 and IRS 48, and in 4 TTS, AS 205, S CrA, RU Lup, and DG Tau. The highest transition seen is J = 36-3…
This study presents sensitive MIR photometry obtained with the Spitzer/IRAC for a young cluster in Sh 2-208 (S208) located in one of the lowest-metallicity HII regions in the Galaxy, ${\rm [O/H]} = -0.8$ dex. Previous studies suggested that the cluster is $\sim$0.5-Myr old and has a distance of $D = 4$ kpc, which is consistent with the astrometric distance from Gaia EDR3. In $\sim$$3.5 \times 4$-arcmin field, 96 sources were detected in at least one MIR band at $\ge$10$σ$, covering intermediate-mass stars with $\sim$1.0-$M_\odot$ mass detection limit. Total 41 probable cluster members were ide…
We present our investigation of 319 Class II objects in Orion A observed by $Spitzer$/IRS. We also present the follow-up observation of 120 of these Class II objects in Orion A from IRTF/SpeX. We measure continuum spectral indices, equivalent widths, and integrated fluxes that pertain to disk structure and dust composition from IRS spectra of Class II objects in Orion A. We estimate mass accretion rates using hydrogen recombination lines in the SpeX spectra of our targets. Utilizing these properties, we compare the distributions of the disk and dust properties of Orion A disks to those of Taur…
Protoplanetary disks are thought to have lifetimes of several million years in the solar neighborhood, but recent observations suggest that the disk lifetimes are shorter in a low metallicity environment. We perform a suite of radiation hydrodynamics simulations of photoevaporation of protoplanetary disks to study the disk structure and its long-term evolution of $\sim 10000$ years, and the metallicity dependence of mass-loss rate. Our simulations follow hydrodynamics, extreme and far ultra-violet radiative transfer, and non-equilibrium chemistry in a self-consistent manner. Dust grain tempera…
The Herschel Space Observatory was used to observe ~ 120 pre-main-sequence stars in Taurus as part of the GASPS Open Time Key project. PACS was used to measure the continuum as well as several gas tracers such as [OI] 63 μm, [OI] 145 μm, [CII] 158 μm, OH, H2O and CO. The strongest line seen is [OI] at 63 μm. We find a clear correlation between the strength of the [OI] 63 μm line and the 63 μm continuum for disk sources. In outflow sources, the line emission can be up to 20 times stronger than in disk sources, suggesting that the line emission is dominated by the outflow. The tight correlation …
The presence of crystalline silicates has been detected in the circumstellar environment of several young stars in the recent past and there is evidence of silicon carbide (SiC) detection in the envelope of pre-main sequence star SVS13. In this work, we have attempted to probe the presence of SiC in the dust around protoplanetary disks in a sample of young stars. We have modelled the linear polarization of composite dust grains in the mid-infrared (MIR: 8--13 $μ$m) using silicates as the host with various inclusions of SiC and graphites using the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) and the Eff…
We report our SMA observations of the Class \RN{1}-\RN{2} protostar HL Tau in the $^{13}$CO (2--1), C$^{18}$O (2--1), SO(5$_6$--4$_5$), and the 1.3 mm dust-continuum emission and our analyses of the ALMA long baseline data of the HCO$^{+}$ (1--0) emission. The 1.3 mm continuum emission observed with the SMA shows compact ($\sim$0$\farcs$8 $\times$ 0$\farcs$5) and extended ($\sim$6$\farcs$5 $\times$ 4$\farcs$3) components, tracing the protoplanetary disk and the protostellar envelope, respectively. The $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and HCO$^+$ show a compact ($\sim$ 200 AU) component at velocities high…
We present new deep UBVRI images and high-resolution multi-object optical spectroscopy of the young (~ 6 - 10 Myr old), relatively nearby (800 pc) open cluster IC 2395. We identify nearly 300 cluster members and use the photometry to estimate their spectral types, which extend from early B to middle M. We also present an infrared imaging survey of the central region using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, covering the wavelength range from 3.6 to 24 microns. Our infrared observations allow us to detect dust in circumstellar disks originating over a typical ran…
We present the Spitzer Archival Far-InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (SAFIRES). This program produces refined mosaics and source lists for all far-infrared extragalactic data taken during the more than six years of the cryogenic operation of the Spitzer Space Telescope. The SAFIRES products consist of far-infrared data in two wavelength bands (70 um and 160 um) across approximately 180 square degrees of sky, with source lists containing far-infrared fluxes for almost 40,000 extragalactic point sources. Thus, SAFIRES provides a large, robust archival far-infrared data set suitable for many scienti…
At early stages of stellar evolution young stars show powerful jets and/or outflows that interact with protoplanetary discs and their surroundings. Despite the scarce knowledge about the interaction of jets and/or outflows with discs, spectroscopic studies based on Herschel and ISO data suggests that gas shocked by jets and/or outflows can be traced by far-IR (FIR) emission in certain sources. We want to provide a consistent catalogue of selected atomic ([OI] and [CII]) and molecular (CO, OH, and H$_{2}$O) line fluxes observed in the FIR, separate and characterize the contribution from the jet…
