Spectral properties of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, which emulates ultracold gases of atoms confined in optical lattices, are investigated by means of the variational cluster approach. The phase boundary of the quantum phase transition from Mott phase to superfluid phase is calculated and compared to recent work. Moreover the single-particle spectral functions in both the first and the second Mott lobe are presented and the corresponding densities of states and momentum distributions are evaluated. A qualitatively similar intensity distribution of the spectral weight can be observed for spectral functions in the first and the second Mott lobe.
We use the Bose-Hubbard model with an effective infinite-range interaction to describe the correlated lattice bosons in an optical cavity. We study both static and spectral properties of such system within the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (B-DMFT), which is the state of the art method for strongly correlated bosonic systems. Both similarities and differences are found and discussed between our results and these obtained within different theoretical methods and experiment.
Experiments on ultracold atomic gases have begun to explore lattice effects and thermal fluctuations for two-component bosons with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Motivated by this, we study a $tJ$ model of strongly correlated lattice bosons, with equal Rashba-Dresselhaus SOC and a uniform magnetic field. At zero temperature, a Gutzwiller ansatz is shown to capture lattice variants of stripe superfluid (SF) ground states. We formulate a finite temperature generalization of the Gutzwiller approach and show that thermal fluctuations in the doped Mott insulator drive a two-step melting of the stripe S…
We introduce a density functional formalism to study the ground-state properties of strongly-correlated dipolar and ionic ultracold bosonic and fermionic gases, based on the self-consistent combination of the weak and the strong coupling limits. Contrary to conventional density functional approaches, our formalism does not require a previous calculation of the interacting homogeneous gas, and it is thus very suitable to treat systems with tunable long-range interactions. Due to its asymptotic exactness in the regime of strong correlation, the formalism works for systems in which standard mean-…
We study finite-temperature properties of the strongly interacting bosons in three-dimensional lattices by employing the combined Bogoliubov method and the quantum rotor approach. Based on the mapping of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian of strongly interacting bosons onto U(1) phase action, we study their thermodynamic phase diagrams for several lattice geometries including; simple cubic, body- as well as face-centered lattices. The quantitative values for the phase boundaries obtained here may be used as a reference for emulation of the Bose-Hubbard model on a variety of optical lattice structure…
We investigate the effect of the trapping potential on the quantum phases of strongly correlated ultracold bosons in one-dimensional periodic and quasiperiodic optical lattices. By means of a decoupling meanfield approach, we characterize the ground state of the system and its behavior under variation of the harmonic trapping, as a function of the total number of atoms. For a small atom number the system shows an incompressible Mott-insulating phase, as the size of the cloud remains unaffected when the trapping potential is varied. When the quasiperiodic potential is added the system develops …
The quantum dynamics of a few bosons in a double well potential is studied using a Bose Hubbard model. We consider both signs for the on-site interparticle interaction and also investigated the situations where they are large and small. Interesting distinctive features are noted for the tunneling oscillations of these bosons corresponding to the above scenarios. Further, the sensitivity of the particle dynamics to the initial conditions has been studied. It is found that corresponding to an odd number of particles, such as three (or five), an initial condition of having unequal number of parti…
We numerically simulate strongly correlated ultracold bosons coupled to a high-finesse cavity field, pumped by a laser beam in the transverse direction. Assuming a weak classical optical lattice added in the cavity direction, we model this system by a generalized Bose-Hubbard model, which is solved by means of bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. The complete phase diagram is established, which contains two novel self-organized quantum phases, lattice supersolid and checkerboard solid, in addition to conventional phases such as superfluid and Mott insulator. At finite but low temperature, ther…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice with a time dependent hopping amplitude J(t)=J_0 +δJ \cos(ωt) which takes the system from a superfluid phase near the Mott-superfluid transition (J= J_0+δJ) to a Mott phase (J=J_0-δJ) and back through a quantum critical point (J=J_c) and demonstrate dynamic freezing of the boson wavefunction at specific values of ω. At these values, the wavefunction overlap F (defect density P=1-F) approaches unity (zero). We provide a qualitative explanation of the freezing phenomenon, show it's robustness against quantum fluctuat…
We explore the tunneling dynamics of strongly correlated bosonic mixtures in a one-dimensional double-well. The role of the inter- and intra-species interactions and their interplay is investigated using the numerically exact Multi-Configuration Time dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The dynamics is studied for three initial configurations: complete and partial population imbalance and a phase separated state. Increasing the inter-species interaction leads to a strong increase of the tunneling time period analogous to the quantum self-trapping for condensates. The intra-species repulsion can s…
Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the finite-temperature phase diagram of hard-core bosons (XY model) in two- and three-dimensional lattices. To determine the phase boundaries, we perform a finite-size-scaling analysis of the condensate fraction and/or the superfluid stiffness. We then discuss how these phase diagrams can be measured in experiments with trapped ultracold gases, where the systems are inhomogeneous. For that, we introduce a method based on the measurement of the zero-momentum occupation, which is adequate for experiments dealing with both homogeneous and trap…
We study the ground state of a bosonic ring ladder under a gauge flux in the vortex phase, corresponding to the case where the single-particle dispersion relation has two degenerate minima. By combining exact diagonalization and an approximate fermionization approach we show that the ground state of the system evolves from a fragmented state of two single-particle states at weak interparticle interactions to a fragmented state of two Fermi seas at large interactions. Fragmentation is inferred from the study of the eigenvalues of the reduced single-particle density matrix as well as from the ca…
We study Josephson oscillations of two strongly correlated one-dimensional bosonic clouds separated by a localized barrier. Using a quantum-Langevin approach and the exact Tonks-Girardeau solution in the impenetrable-boson limit, we determine the dynamical evolution of the particle-number imbalance, displaying an effective damping of the Josephson oscillations which depends on barrier height, interaction strength and temperature. We show that the damping originates from the quantum and thermal fluctuations intrinsically present in the strongly correlated gas. Thanks to the density-phase dualit…
We investigate the ground state properties and the nonequilibrium dynamics of a lattice trapped bosonic mixture consisting of an impurity species and a finite-sized medium. For the case of one as well as two impurities we observe that, depending on the lattice depth and the interspecies interaction strength, a transition from a strongly delocalized to a localized impurity distribution occurs. In the latter regime the two species phase separate, thereby forming a particle-hole pair. For two impurities we find that below a critical lattice depth they are delocalized among two neighboring outer l…
These lectures are an introduction to the physics of strongly correlated fermions and bosons. They are specially targeted for the experimental realizations that have been provided by cold atomic gases in optical lattices.
We study a one-dimensional system of strongly correlated bosons on a dynamical lattice. To this end, we extend the standard Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to include extra degrees of freedom on the bonds of the lattice. We show that this minimal model exhibits phenomena reminiscent of fermion-phonon models. In particular, we discover a bosonic analog of the Peierls transition, where the translational symmetry of the underlying lattice is spontaneously broken. This provides a dynamical mechanism to obtain a topological insulator in the presence of interactions, analogous to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger m…
We investigate features in the single-particle spectral function beyond the Hubbard bands in the strongly correlated normal phase of the Bose-Hubbard model. There are two distinct classes of additional peaks generated by the bosonic statistics. The first type is thermally activated Hubbard "sidebands", with the same physical origin as the zero-temperature Hubbard bands, but generated by excitations from thermally activated local occupation number states. The second class are two-particle fluctuation resonances driven by the lattice dynamics. In the unity filling Mott insulator, this takes the …
We study the `tilting' of Mott insulators of bosons into metastable states. These are described by Hamiltonians acting on resonant subspaces, and have rich possibilities for correlated phases with non-trivial entanglement of pseudospin degrees of freedom encoded in the boson density. We extend a previous study (arXiv:cond-mat/0205169) of cubic lattices to a variety of lattices and tilt directions in 2 dimensions: square, decorated square, triangular, and kagome. For certain configurations three-body interactions are necessary to ensure that the energy of the effective resonant subspace is boun…
We analyze the superfluid phase transition of harmonically confined bosons with long-range interaction in both two and three dimensions in a broad parameter range from weak to strong coupling. We observe that the onset of superfluidity occurs in $3D$ at significantly lower temperatures compared to $2D$. This is demonstrated to be a quantum degeneracy effect. In addition, the spatial distribution of superfluidity across the shells of the clusters is investigated. It is found that superfluidity is substantially reduced in the outer layers due to increased correlation effects.
We develop an analytical many-body wave function to accurately describe the crossover of a one-dimensional bosonic system from weak to strong interactions in a harmonic trap. The explicit wave function, which is based on the exact two-body states, consists of symmetric multiple products of the corresponding parabolic cylinder functions, and respects the analytically known limits of zero and infinite repulsion for arbitrary number of particles. For intermediate interaction strengths we demonstrate, that the energies, as well as the reduced densities of first and second order, are in excellent a…
We investigate theoretically soliton excitations and dynamics of their formation in strongly correlated systems of ultracold bosonic atoms in two and three dimensional optical lattices. We derive equations of nonlinear hydrodynamics in the regime of strong interactions and incommensurate fillings, when atoms can be treated as hard core bosons. When parameters change in one direction only we obtain Korteweg-de Vries type equation away from half-filling and modified KdV equation at half-filling. We apply this general analysis to a problem of the decay of the density step. We consider stability o…
A correlated many-body calculation is presented to characterize the Shannon information entropy of trapped interacting bosons. We reformulate the one-body Shannon information entropy in terms of the one-body probability density. The minimum limit of the entropy uncertainty relation (EUR) is approached by making $N$ very small in our numerical work. We examine the effect of correlations in the calculation of information entropy. Comparison with the mean-field result shows that the correlated basis function is indeed required to characterize the important features of the information entropies. W…
We derive the scattering length of composite bosons (cobosons) within the framework of the composite boson many-body formalism that uses correlated-pair states as a basis, instead of free fermion states. The integral equation constructed from this physically relevant basis makes transparent the role of fermion exchange in the coboson-coboson effective scattering. Three potentials used for Cooper pairs, fermionic-atom dimers, and semiconductor excitons are considered. While the s-wave scattering length for the BCS-like potential is just equal to its Born value, the other two are substantially s…
We study the dipole oscillations of strongly correlated 1D bosons, in the hard-core limit, on a lattice, by an exact numerical approach. We show that far from the regime where a Mott insulator appears in the system, damping is always present and increases for larger initial displacements of the trap, causing dramatic changes in the momentum distribution, $n_k$. When a Mott insulator sets in the middle of the trap, the center of mass barely moves after an initial displacement, and $n_k$ remains very similar to the one in the ground state. We also study changes introduced by the damping in the n…
We analyze by means of Matrix-Product-State simulations the correlation dynamics of strongly-correlated superfluid Bose gases in one-dimensional time-dependent optical lattices. We show that, as for the case of abrupt quenches, a quasi-adiabatic modulation of the lattice is characterized by a relatively long transient regime for which quasi-local single-particle correlation functions have already converged to a new equilibrium, whereas long-range correlations and particularly the quasi-condensate fraction may still present a very significant dynamics well after the end of the lattice modificat…
In the present paper, we study finite-temperature phase structure of two-component hard-core bosons in a cubic optical lattice. The system that we study in the present paper is an effective model for the Bose-Hubbard model with strong on-site repulsions and is called bosonic t-J model. This model is a bosonic counterpart of the t-J model for the strongly-correlated electron systems like the high-temperature superconducting materials. We study the model by means of path-integral methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. We found that this system has a very rich phase structure including checkerboard…
We derive a dynamical mean-field theory for mixtures of interacting bosons and fermions on a lattice (BF-DMFT). The BF-DMFT is a comprehensive, thermodynamically consistent framework for the theoretical investigation of Bose-Fermi mixtures and is applicable for arbitrary values of the coupling parameters and temperatures. It becomes exact in the limit of high spatial dimensions d or coordination number Z of the lattice. In particular, the BF-DMFT treats normal and condensed bosons on equal footing and thus includes the effects caused by their dynamic coupling. Using the BF-DMFT we investigate …
We study the crossover of a finite one-dimensional (1D) bosonic ensemble from weak to strong interactions in harmonic traps and multi-well potentials. Although these systems are very common in experimental setups and have been studied theoretically, an analytical description is lacking. We perform Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo calculations which we show to be in good agreement with results from analytical functions that we construct to describe these systems. For the harmonic trap we use the correlated-pair wave function which we introduced in [1] considering here much larger atom numbers, goi…
We extend the variational cluster approach to deal with strongly correlated lattice bosons in the superfluid phase. To this end, we reformulate the approach within a pseudoparticle formalism, whereby cluster excitations are described by particlelike excitations. The approximation amounts to solving a multicomponent noninteracting bosonic system by means of a multimode Bogoliubov approximation. A source-and-drain term is introduced in order to break U(1) symmetry at the cluster level. We provide an expression for the grand potential, the single-particle normal and anomalous Green's functions, t…
We discuss how multichannel Kondo physics can arise in the setting of a localized level coupled to several bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid leads. We propose one physical realization involving ultracold bosonic atoms coupled to an atomic quantum dot, and a second, based on superconducting nanowires coupled to a Cooper-pair box. The corresponding zero-temperature phase diagram is determined via an interplay between Kondo-type phenomena arising from the dot and the consequences of direct inter-lead hopping, which can suppress the Kondo effect. We demonstrate that the multichannel Kondo state is…
Thouless pumping, not only achieving quantized transport but also immune to moderate disorder, has attracted growing attention in both experiments and theories. Here, we explore how particle-particle interactions affect topological transport in a periodically-modulated and tilted optical lattice. Not limited to wannier states, our scheme ensures a dispersionless quantized transport even for initial Gaussian-like wave packets of interacting bosons which do not uniformly occupy a given band. This is because the tilting potential leads to Bloch oscillations uniformly sampling the Berry curvatures…
We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons" at finite temperatures. This model describes a system of cold bosonic atoms with two species in an optical lattice. The model is derived from the Hubbard model for very large on-site repulsive interaction between bosons of same species (hard-core nature) and also strong correlations between different species. The operator B_{xσ} for an atom at the site x with a two-component (pseudo-) spin σ(=1,2) is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a spinon …
We study correlated phases occurring in the flat lowest band of the dice lattice model at flux density one half. We discuss how to realize the dice lattice model, also referred to as the T_3 lattice, in cold atomic gases. We construct the projection of the model to the lowest dice band, which yields a Hubbard-Hamiltonian with interaction-assisted hopping processes. We solve this model for bosons in two limits. In the limit of large density, we use Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory to reveal time-reversal symmetry breaking vortex lattice phases. At low density, we use exact diagonalization to …
