We consider the proton and neutron quasiparticle orbits around the closed-shell 56Ni and 48Ca isotopes. It is found that large model spaces (beyond the capability of shell-model applications) are necessary for predicting the quenchings of spectroscopic factors.
The particle-vibration coupling is identified as the principal mechanism. Additional correlations--due to configuration with several particle-hole excitations--are estimated using shell-model calculations and generate an extra reduction which is < ~4% for most quasiparticle states. The theoretical calculations nicely agree with (e,e'p) and heavy ion knock-out experiments. These results open a new path for a microscopic understanding of the shell-model.
We present microscopic coupled-cluster calculations of the spectroscopic factors for proton removal from the closed-shell oxygen isotopes $^{14,16,22,24,28}$O with the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. We include coupling-to-continuum degrees of freedom by using a Hartree-Fock basis built from a Woods-Saxon single-particle basis. This basis treats bound and continuum states on an equal footing. We find a significant quenching of spectroscopic factors in the neutron-rich oxygen isotopes, pointing to enhanced many-body correlations induced by strong cou…
In this review article we discuss the present status of direct nuclear reactions and the nuclear structure aspects one can study with them. We discuss the spectroscopic information we can assess in experiments involving transfer reactions, heavy-ion-induced knockout reactions and quasifree scattering with (p,2p), (p,pn), and (e,e'p) reactions. In particular, we focus on the proton-to-neutron asymmetry of the quenching of the spectroscopic strength.
The nucleon self-energies of $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca are determined using a nonlocal dispersive optical model (DOM). By enforcing the dispersion relation connecting the real and imaginary part of the self-energy, scattering and structure data are used to constrain these self-energies. The ability to calculate both bound and scattering states simultaneously puts these self-energies in a unique position to consistently describe exclusive knockout reactions such as $(e,e'p)$. The present analysis reveals the importance of high-energy proton reaction cross-section data in constraining spectroscopi…
We propose a phenomenological approach to examine the role of short- and long-range nucleon-nucleon correlations in the quenching of single-particle strength in atomic nuclei and their evolution in asymmetric nuclei and neutron matter. These correlations are thought to be the reason for the quenching of spectroscopic factors observed in $\rm (e,e'p)$, $\rm (p,2p)$ and transfer reactions. We show that the recently observed increase of the high-momentum component of the protons in neutron-rich nuclei is consistent with the reduced proton spectroscopic factors. Our approach connects recent result…
Cross sections for proton knockout observed in (e,e'p) reactions are apparently quenched by a factor of ~0.5, an effect attributed to short-range correlations between nucleons. Here we demonstrate that such quenching is not restricted to proton knockout, but a more general phenomenon associated with any nucleon transfer. Measurements of absolute cross sections on a number of targets between 16O and 208Pb were analyzed in a consistent way, with the cross sections reduced to spectroscopic factors through the distorted-wave Born approximation with global optical potentials. Across the 124 cases a…
The issue of Gamow-Teller sum rule in atomic nuclei is reexamined in the framework of a relativistic description of nuclei. It is shown that the total Gamow-Teller strength in the nucleon sector is reduced by about 12% as compared to the prediction of a non-relativistic description. This reduction is due to the antinucleon degrees of freedom.
A campaign of intermediate energy (300-450 MeV/u) proton-induced nucleon knockout measurements in inverse kinematics has been recently undertaken at the R 3 B/LAND setup at GSI. We present a systematic theoretical analysis of these data with the aim of studying the quenching of the single-particle strengths and its binding-energy dependence. For that, the measured semi-inclusive (p, 2p) and (p, pn) cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions based on single-particle cross sections derived from a novel coupled-channels formalism and shell-model spectroscopic factors. A systematic r…
Role of the Landau-Migdal parameters with the pseudovector ($g_a$) and the tensor coupling ($g_t$) is examined for the giant Gamow-Teller (GT) states in the relativistic random phase approximation (RPA). The excitation energy is dominated by both $g_a$ and $g_t$ in a similar way, while the GT strength is independent of $g_a$ and $g_t$ in the RPA of the nucleon space, and is quenched, compared with that in non-relativistic one. The coupling of the particle-hole states with nucleon-antinucleon states is expected to quench the GT strength further through $g_a$.
Within an advanced Langevin-hydrodynamics framework coupled to a hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization model, we study heavy flavor quenching and flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We investigate how the initial heavy quark spectrum, the energy loss and hadronization mechanisms of heavy quarks in medium, the evolution profile of pre-equilibrium stage, the flow of medium and the temperature dependence of heavy quark diffusion coefficient influence the suppression and elliptic flow of heavy mesons at RHIC and the LHC. Our result shows that different modeling of initial condition…
The relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pn-RQRPA) is applied in the calculation of the L=0 strength in charge-exchange reactions on $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{208}$Pb and nuclei in the Sn isotopic chain. The microscopic theoretical framework is based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model for the nuclear ground state. The calculation is fully self-consistent, i.e. the same interaction is used both in the RHB equations that determine the quasiparticle basis, and in the matrix equations of the pn-RQRPA. The inclusion of the higher-order terms that incl…
Preliminary PHENIX data on $Au+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}= 130$ AGeV suggest that $\bar{p}$ yields may exceed $π^-$ at high $p_{\rm T} > 2$ GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central $A+A$ reactions, thereby exposing a novel non-perturbative component of baryon dynamics. We suggest that baryon junctions provide a possible explanation of the anomalous component. We predict that the $\bar{p} \geq π^-$ anomaly is limited to a finite $p_{\rm T}$ window and decreases with increasing impact parameter.
The observation of large azimuthal anisotropy or $v_2$ for hadrons above $p_T>5$ GeV/$c$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm nn}}=200$ GeV has been a longstanding challenge for jet quenching models based on perturbative QCD (pQCD). Using a simple jet absorption model, we seek to clarify the situation by exploring in detail how the calculated $v_2$ varies with choices of the collision geometry as well as choices of the path length dependence and thermalization time $τ_0$ in the energy loss formula. Besides the change of eccentricity due to distortion from gluon saturation or event-by-event flu…
QCD monopoles are magnetically charged quasiparticles whose Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at $T<T_c$ creates electric confinement and flux tubes. The "magnetic scenario" of QCD proposes that scattering on the non-condensed component of the monopole ensemble at $T>T_c$ is responsible for the unusual kinetic properties of QGP. In this paper, we study the contribution of the monopoles to jet quenching phenomenon, using the BDMPS framework and hydrodynamic backgrounds. In the lowest order for cross sections, we calculate the nuclear modification factor, $R_\text{AA},$ and azimuthal anisotropy, …
I discuss how the axial current coupling constant $g_A$ renormalized in scale symmetric chiral EFT defined at a chiral matching scale impacts on the axial current matrix elements on beta decays in nuclei with and without neutrinos. The "quenched" $g_A$ observed in nuclear superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions, a long-standing puzzle in nuclear physics, is shown to encode the emergence of chiral-scale symmetry hidden in QCD in the vacuum. This enables one to explore how trace-anomaly-induced scale symmetry breaking enters in the renormalized $g_A$ in nuclei applicable to certain non-unique forb…
In standard potential-model descriptions of the Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction the Be7+p spectroscopic factors S appear in the cross section. We argue that the microscopic substructure effects which are represented by S are short-ranged and cannot affect the asymptotic normalization of the wave function. We believe that the standard way of describing reactions in a potential model may be incorrect and the low-energy cross section should not depend on S in the case of external capture reactions, like Be7(p,gamma)B8
We investigate the role of jet and shower parton broadening by the strong colour field in the $Δη$-$Δϕ$ correlation of high $p_T$ particles. When anisotropic momentum broadening ($Δp_z > Δp_T$) is given to jet and shower partons in the initial stage, a ridge-like structure is found to appear in the two hadron correlation. The ratio of the peak to the pedestal yield is overestimated.
We investigate the low-lying 2$^+$ states of $N=28$ isotones ($^{48}$Ca, $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si) with using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory in which the pairing is taken into account self-consistently. The quadrupole mode with very small excitation energies emerges in $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si due to the strong quadrupole correlations triggered by the quenching of the $N=28$ shell gap. The importance of the quadrupole correlations between the protons and neutrons, and the role of the pairing correlation to reinforce the lowest 2$^+$ mode are…
The quadrupole vibrational modes of neutron-rich $N$=28 isotones ($^{48}$Ca, $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si) are investigated using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with several choice of energy density functionals, including nuclear pairing correlation. It is found that the quenching of $N$=28 shell gap and the proton holes in the $sd$-shell trigger quadrupole correlation and increase the collectivity of the low-lying 2$^+$ state in $^{46}$Ar. It is also found that the pairing correlation plays an important role to increase the collectivity. We also demonst…
Jet quenching in heavy ion collisions and in particular the sub-structure of quenched jets are promising tools for investigating the microscopic processes underlying jet quenching and the background medium's response to energy and momentum depositions. A quantitative understanding of the data can, however, be complicated by the presence of initial state radiation in reconstructed jets. Using an extended version of JEWEL the effect of initial state radiation on different jet observables is studied in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions. It is shown that, depending on the observable and the j…
The spectroscopic factor has long played a central role in nuclear reaction theory. However, it is not an observable. Consequently it is of minimal use as a meeting point between theory and experiment. In this paper the nature of the problem is explored. At the many-body level, unitary transformations are constructed that vary the spectroscopic factors over the full range of allowed values. At the phenomenological level, field redefinitions play a similar role and the spectroscopic factor extracted from experiment depend more on the assumed energy dependence of the potentials than on the measu…
