We investigate the time-dependent, coherent, and dissipative dynamics of bound particles in single multilevel quantum dots in the presence of sequential tunnelling transport. We focus on the nonequilibrium regime where several channels are available for transport. Through a fully microscopic and non-Markovian density matrix formalism we investigate transport-induced decoherence and relaxation of the system. We validate our methodology by also investigating the Markov limit on our model. We confirm that not only does this limit neglect the coherent oscillations between system states as expected, but also the rate at which the steady state is reached under this limit significantly differs from the non-Markovian results. By a systematic analysis of the decay constants and frequencies of coherent oscillations for the off-diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix under various realistic tunneling rate anisotropies and energy configurations, we outline a criteria for extended decoherence times.
Despite a rich choice of two-dimensional materials, which exists these days, heterostructures, both vertical (van der Waals) and in-plane, offer an unprecedented control over the properties and functionalities of the resulted structures. Thus, planar heterostructures allow p-n junctions between different two-dimensional semiconductors and graphene nanoribbons with well-defined edges; and vertical heterostructures resulted in the observation of superconductivity in purely carbon-based systems and realisation of vertical tunnelling transistors. Here we demonstrate simultaneous use of in-plane an…
Generating and detecting radiation in the technologically relevant range of the so-called terahertz gap ($0.1 - 10$ THz) is challenging because of a lack of efficient sources and detectors. Quantum dots in carbon nanotubes have shown great potential to build sensitive terahertz detectors usually based on photon-assisted tunnelling. A recently reported mechanism combining resonant quantum dot transitions and tunnelling barriers asymmetries results in a narrow linewidth photocurrent response with a large signal-to-noise ratio under weak THz radiation. That device was sensitive to one frequency, …
Coulomb blockade of tunnelling through compressible rings formed around an antidot: an explanation for $h/2e$ Aharonov-Bohm oscillations
With the ever-growing interest in quantum computing, understanding the behaviour of excitons in monolayer quantum dots has become a topic of great relevance. In this paper, we consider a Wannier exciton confined in a triangular quantum dot of hexagonal Boron Nitride. We begin by outlining the adequate basis functions to describe a particle in a triangular enclosure, analyzing their degeneracy and symmetries. Afterwards, we discuss the excitonic hamiltonian inside the quantum dot and study the influence of the quantum dot dimensions on the excitonic states.

Quantum dots are arguably the best interface between matter spin qubits and flying photonic qubits. Using quantum dot devices to produce joint spin-photonic states requires the electronic spin qubits to be stored for extended times. Therefore, the study of the coherence of spins of various quantum dot confined charge carriers is important both scientifically and technologically. In this study we report on spin relaxation measurements performed on five different forms of electronic spin qubits confined in the very same quantum dot. In particular, we use all optical techniques to measure the spi…
The electron kinetics in nanowire-based hot-carrier solar cells is studied, where both relaxation and extraction are considered concurrently. Our kinetics is formulated in the many-particle basis of the interacting system. Detailed comparison with simplified calculations based on product states shows that this includes the Coulomb interaction both in lowest and higher orders. While relaxation rates of 1 ps are obtained, if lowest order processes are available, timescales of tens of ps arise if these are not allowed for particular designs and initial conditions. Based on these calculations we q…
We present here results of atomistic theory of electrons confined by metallic gates in a single layer of transition metal dichalcogenides. The electronic states are described by the tight-binding model and computed using a computational box including up to million atoms with periodic boundary conditions and parabolic confining potential due to external gates embedded in it. With this methodology applied to MoS2, we find a twofold degenerate energy spectrum of electrons confined in the two non-equivalent K-valleys by the metallic gates as well as six-fold degenerate spectrum associated with Q-v…
Coupling to phonon modes is a primary mechanism of excitonic dephasing and energy loss in semiconductors. However, low-energy phonons in colloidal quantum dots and their coupling to excitons are poorly understood, since their experimental signatures are weak and usually obscured by unavoidable inhomogeneous broadening of colloidal dot ensembles. We use multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures to extract the homogeneous nonlinear optical response of excitons in a CdSe/CdZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dot ensemble. Comparison to simulation provides evidence that the ob…
Increasing the number of electrons in electrostatically confined quantum dots can enable faster qubit gates. Although this has been experimentally demonstrated, a detailed quantitative understanding has been missing. Here we study one- and three-electron quantum dots in silicon/silicon-germanium heterostructures within the context of electrically-driven spin resonance (EDSR) using full configuration interaction and tight binding approaches. Our calculations show that anharmonicity of the confinement potential plays an important role: while the EDSR Rabi frequency of electrons in a harmonic pot…
We show that quantum confinement in the valence and conduction bands of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes can be engineered by means of artificial defects. This ability holds potential for designing future nanotube-based quantum devices such as electrically driven room-temperature single-photon sources emitting at telecom-wavelength. Using Ar$^{+}$ and N$^{+}$ ion-induced defects, intrananotube quantum dots with sub-10 nm lateral sizes are created, giving rise to quantized electronic bound states with level spacings of the order of 100 meV and larger. Using low-temperature scanning…
