We study the finite temperature nature of a quantum phase transition between an Abelian and a non-Abelian topological phase in an exactly solvable model of a chiral spin liquid. By virtue of the exact solvability, this model can serve as a testbed for developing better measures for describing topological quantum phase transitions. We characterize this phase transition in terms of the global flux and entanglement entropy, and discuss to what extent the existence of a topologically ordered ground state with non-Abelian excitations is revealed at finite temperature.
We established a large class of exactly soluble spin liquids and chiral spin liquids on three dimensional helix lattices by introducing Kitaev-type's spin coupling. In the chiral spin liquids, exact stable ground states with spontaneous breaking of the time reversal symmetry are found. The fractionalized loop excitations in both the spin and chiral spin liquids obey non-abelian statistics. We characterize this kind of statistics by non-abelian Berry phase and quantum algebra relation. The topological correlation of loops is independent of local order parameter and it measures the intrinsic glo…
The breaking of chiral and time-reversal symmetries provides a pathway to exotic quantum phenomena and topological phases. In particular, the breaking of chiral (mirror) symmetry in quantum materials has been shown to have important technological applications. Recent work has extensively explored the resulting emergence of chiral charge orders and chiral spin liquids on the kagomé lattice. Such chiral spin liquids are closely tied to bosonic fractional quantum Hall states and host anyonic quasiparticles; however, their connection to nearby magnetically ordered states has remained a mystery. He…
We present a method for constructing parent Hamiltonians for the chiral spin liquid. We find two distinct Hamiltonians for which the chiral spin liquid on a square lattice is an exact zero-energy ground state. We diagonalize both Hamiltonians numerically for 16-site lattices, and find that the chiral spin liquid, modulo its two-fold topological degeneracy, is indeed the unique ground state for one Hamiltonian, while it is not unique for the other.
In this work we study the crystal symmetry fractionalization in chiral spin liquids with the chiral-semion topological order. We show that if such a chiral spin liquid is realized in a two-dimensional lattice model with odd number of spin-$\frac12$ per unit cell and the state preserves spin rotation symmetry and translation symmetries, the semion excitation must carry both half-integer spin and fractional crystal quantum numbers. As a result, only a unique symmetry enriched topological phase can be realized in chiral spin liquids in a spin-$\frac12$ kagome lattice model. These fractional symme…
In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model - the spinful Haldane model with on-site interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin rotation symmetry by using slave-rotor approach and find that chiral spin liquid exists in such a correlated electron system of the intermediate coupling region. By considering the anyon nature of excitations, chiral spin liquid may be the ground state of the topological Hubbard model. The low energy physics is basically determined by its Chern-Simons gauge theory.
Using a perturbative renormalization group approach, we show that the extended ($J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$) Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with a staggered chiral interaction ($J_χ$) can exhibit a gapless chiral quantum spin liquid phase. Within a coupled-chains construction, this phase can be understood as a chiral sliding Luttinger liquid with algebraic decay of spin correlations along the chain directions. We calculate the low-energy properties of this gapless chiral spin liquid using the effective field theory and show that they are compatible with the predictions from parton mean-field the…
We investigate the stability and the nature of the chiral spin liquids which were recently uncovered in extended Heisenberg models on the kagome lattice. Using a Gutzwiller projected wave function approach -- i.e. a parton construction -- we obtain large overlaps with ground states of these extended Heisenberg models. We further suggest that the appearance of the chiral spin liquid in the time-reversal invariant case is linked to a classical transition line between two magnetically ordered phases.
We have developed a fermionic boot-strap method to solve a class of chiral one dimensional fermion model which cannot be tackled by bosonization. Using this scheme, we show that Luttinger liquid behavior in a gas of four interacting chiral Majorana fermions is highly sensitive to the velocity degeneracy. Upon changing the velocity of a one chiral fermion, a sharp bound (or anti-bound) state splits off from the original Luttinger liquid continuum, cutting off the X-ray singularity to form a broad incoherent excitation with a lifetime that grows linearly with frequency.
We study an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice. We find a rich phase diagram which includes a topological (gapped) chiral spin liquid with gapless chiral edge states, and a gapless chiral spin liquid phase with a spin Fermi surface. The ground state of the current model contains an odd number of electrons per unit cell which qualitatively distinguishes it from previously studied exactly solvable models with a spin Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the spin Fermi surface is stable against weak perturbations.
We describe a coupled-chain construction for chiral spin liquids in two-dimensional spin systems. Starting from a one-dimensional zigzag spin chain and imposing SU(2) symmetry in the framework of non-Abelian bosonization, we first show that our approach faithfully describes the low-energy physics of an exactly solvable model with a three-spin interaction. Generalizing the construction to the two-dimensional case, we obtain a theory that incorporates the universal properties of the chiral spin liquid predicted by Kalmeyer and Laughlin: charge-neutral edge states, gapped spin-1/2 bulk excitation…
The existence of a gapped chiral spin liquid has been recently suggested in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, by intensive density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations [A. Szasz, J. Motruk, M.P. Zaletel, and J.E. Moore, Phys. Rev. X {\bf 10}, 021042 (2020)]. Here, we report the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo technique based upon Jastrow-Slater wave functions, implemented with backflow correlations. As in DMRG calculations, we consider $N$-leg cylinders. For $N=4$ and in the presence of a next-nearest n…
We propose in this work an effective field theory description of the chiral spin liquid state in Heisenberg spin system on kagomé lattice. To this end, we derive the low-energy effective theory of kagomé (isotropic) Heisenberg antiferromagnet around its ordered ground states found numerically and show that quantum fluctuations induced by further neighbor spin exchanges are equally strong as those from first neighbor. We use a chiral order parameter theory to argue for the occurrence of finite temperature chiral symmetry breaking transition into chiral ordered state in kagomé antiferromagnet with…
Mott insulators under sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling can display quantum spin liquid phases with topological order and fractional excitations. Quantum magnets with pure Kitaev spin exchange interactions can host a gapped quantum spin liquid with a single Majorana edge mode propagating in the counter-clockwise direction when a small positive magnetic field is applied. Here, we show how under a sufficiently strong positive magnetic field a topological transition into a gapped quantum spin liquid with two Majorana edge modes propagating in the clockwise direction occurs. The Dzyaloshinsk…
We consider a SU(3) model with antiferromagnetic three-site ring exchanges, in addition to two-site exchanges, on the triangular lattice. We first present numerical site-factorized state studies on the magnetic ordered states, which shows two different three-sublattice-ordered states, the antiferro-quadrupolar phase and the standard 120^o anti-ferromagnetic phase, along the axis of the strength of the three-site ring exchanges. We further study the model using slave-fermion mean field approaches in which we rewrite the exchange operators in terms of three flavors of fermions. At the mean-field…
Recent years have seen the discovery of a chiral spin liquid state - a bosonic analogue of a fractional Quantum Hall state first put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 - in several deformations of the Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice. Here, we apply state-of-the-art numerical techniques to one such model, where breaking of the time-reversal symmetry drives the system into the chiral phase. Our methods allow us to obtain explicit matrix-product state representations of the low-lying excitations of the chiral spin liquid state, including the topologically non-trivial semionic excitat…
We extend the scope of Kitaev spin liquids to non-Archimedean lattices. For the pentaheptite lattice, which results from the proliferation of Stone-Wales defects on the honeycomb lattice, we find an exactly solvable non-Abelian chiral spin liquid with spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking due to lattice loops of odd length. Our findings call for potential extensions of exact results for Kitaev models which are based on reflection positivity, which is not fulfilled by the pentaheptite lattice. We further elaborate on potential realizations of our chiral spin liquid proposal in strained $α…
We investigate the extended Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice by using Gutzwiller projected fermionic states and the variational Monte Carlo technique. In particular, when both second- and third-neighbor super-exchanges are considered, we find that a gapped spin liquid described by non-trivial magnetic fluxes and long-range chiral-chiral correlations is energetically favored compared to the gapless U(1) Dirac state. Furthermore, the topological Chern number, obtained by integrating the Berry curvature, and the degeneracy of the ground state, by constructing linearly independent states, le…
Recent numerical simulations find a possible chiral spin liquid state in the intermediate coupling regime of the triangular lattice Hubbard model. Here we provide a simple picture for its origin in terms of a Bosonic RVB description. More specifically, we show that such a chiral spin liquid state can be understood as a quantum disordered tetrahedral spin state stabilized by the four spin ring exchange coupling, which suppresses the order-by-disorder effect toward a stripy spin state. Such a chiral spin liquid state features a spin Berry phase of $\fracπ{2}$ per triangle. However, we show that …
The infinite projected entangled simplex state (iPESS), a type of tensor network (TN) state, has been used successfully for simulating and characterizing {\it non-chiral} spin liquids on the kagome lattice. Here, we demonstrate that iPESS also provides a faithful representation of a {\it chiral} spin liquid (CSL) on the same lattice, namely the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a scalar chirality. By classifying local tensors according to SU$(2)$ and point group symmetries, we construct a chiral ansatz breaking reflection $P$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries…
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with an additional scalar chirality term and show that a chiral spin liquid is stabilized in a sizeable region of the phase diagram. This topological phase is situated in between a coplanar $120^\circ$ Néel ordered and a non-coplanar tetrahedrally ordered phase. Furthermore we discuss the nature of the spin-disordered intermediate phase in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model. We compare the groundstates from Exact Diagonalization with a Dirac spin liquid wavefunction and propose a scenario where this wavefunction describes the quantum…
We study the nearest neighbor $XXZ$ Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Here we consider the effects of several perturbations: a) a chirality term, b) a Dzyaloshinski-Moriya term, and c) a ring-exchange type term on the bowties of the kagome lattice, and inquire if they can suppport chiral spin liquids as ground states. The method used to study these Hamiltonians is a flux attachment transformation that maps the spins on the lattice to fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field on the kagome lattice. This transformation requires us to consistently define a Chern-Simon…
We show that a honeycomb lattice of Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chains with three-spin junction interactions allows for controlled analytical studies of chiral spin liquids (CSLs). Tuning these interactions to a chiral fixed point, we find a Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL phase which here is connected to the critical point of a boundary conformal field theory. Our construction directly yields a quantized spin Hall conductance and localized spinons with semionic statistics as elementary excitations. We also outline the phase diagram away from the chiral point where spinons may condense. Generalizations of our…
We study $S=1$ spin liquid states on the kagome lattice constructed by Gutzwiller-projected $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors. We show that the obtained spin liquids are either non-Abelian or Abelian topological phases, depending on the topology of the fermionic mean-field state. By calculating the modular matrices $S$ and $T$, we confirm that projected topological superconductors are non-Abelian chiral spin liquid (NACSL). The chiral central charge and the spin Hall conductance we obtained agree very well with the $SO(3)_1$ (or, equivalently, $SU(2)_2$) field theory predictions. We propose a local H…
We introduce a novel kind of spin liquid, the spin 1 chirality liquid, which provides a generic paradigm for a disordered spin 1 antiferromagnet in two dimensions. It supports spinon and holon excitations, which carry a chirality quantum number. These excitations obey half-fermi statistics. The sign of the statistical parameter is determined by the chirality. The spin 1 chirality liquid is the first example of a two dimensional quantum state which supports excitations with fractional statistics but does not violate P or T.
The theoretical description of non-Fermi liquids is among the most challenging questions in strongly correlated quantum matter. While there are many experimental candidates for such phases, few examples can be studied using controlled theoretical approaches. Here we introduce a novel conceptual perspective to analytically describe the non-Fermi liquid physics of gapless spin liquids arising in a family of two- and three-dimensional Kagome models. We first discuss a symmetry-protection mechanism that is responsible for the stability of the gapless phase. We then re-cast the two-dimensional Kago…
Strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise for realizing topological phases with fractionalized excitations. Here we propose a chiral spin-orbital liquid as a stable phase of a realistic model for heavy-element double perovskites. This spin liquid state has Majorana fermion excitations with a gapless spectrum characterized by nodal lines along the edges of the Brillouin zone. We show that the nodal lines are topological defects of a non-Abelian Berry connection and that the system exhibits dispersing surface states. We discuss some experimental signatures of thi…
In frustrated systems, some or many states are competed due to frustration of exchange interactions, and this competition often results in exotic states, such as spin liquid and chiral orders. We consider a pyrochlore oxide, a three-dimensional frustrated system, and study its $S=\frac{1}{2}$ effective model, consisting of the Heisenberg-type and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya-type superexchange interactions between the nearest-neighbor transition-metal ions. We show that by using new multiorbital effects of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals on coefficients of those interactions, we can change the effective dimensi…
We present a general review of the projective symmetry group classification of fermionic quantum spin liquids for lattice models of spin $S=1/2$. We then introduce a systematic generalization of the approach for symmetric $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids to the one of chiral phases (i.e., singlet states that break time reversal and lattice reflection, but conserve their product). We apply this framework to classify and discuss possible chiral spin liquids on triangular and kagome lattices. We give a detailed prescription on how to construct quadratic spinon Hamiltonians and microscopic wave…
The large thermal Hall conductivity recently detected in Mott insulating cuprates has been attributed to chiral neutral spin excitations. A quantum spin liquid with Majorana excitations, Chern number +/-4 and large thermal Hall conductivity is found to be an excited state of a frustrated Heisenberg model on the square lattice. Using a Majorana mean-field theory and exact diagonalizations, we explore two possible routes to achieve this chiral quantum spin liquid, an orbital effect of an applied magnetic field and spin orbit couplings as present in cuprates. In particular, we show how only the o…
Topological chiral phases are ubiquitous in the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. Non-chiral topological spin liquids are also well known. Here, using the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS), we construct a family of chiral spin liquids on the square lattice which are generalized spin-1/2 Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states obtained from deformed local tensors with $d+i\, d$ symmetry. On a cylinder, we construct four topological sectors with even or odd number of spinons on the boundary and even or odd number of ($\mathbb{Z}_2$) fluxes penetrating the cylinder whi…
We study a chiral spin liquid wave function defined as a Gutwziller projected BCS state with a complex pairing function. After projection, spontaneous dimerization is found for any odd but finite number of chains, thus satisfying the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, whereas for even number of chains there is no dimerization. The two-dimensional thermodynamic limit is consistently reached for large number of chains since the dimer order parameter vanishes in this limit. This property clearly supports the possibility of a spin liquid ground state in two dimensions with a gap to all {\em physical} ex…
We identify a non Fermi Liquid (NFL) class of fixed points describing the infrared behaviour of interacting chiral fermions in one dimension. The thermodynamic properties and asymptotic correlation functions are characterized by universal exponents, which we determine by means of conformal and Bethe-Ansatz techniques. The mechanism leading to the breakdown of Fermi-Liquid theory is quite general and can be expected to be realized in systems with broken T-invariance. As an example we study the edge states of interacting QHE systems. We calculate the universal frequency dependence of the spin co…
Chiral three-spin interactions can suppress long-range magnetic order and stabilize quantum spin liquid states in frustrated lattices. We study a spin-1/2 model on the kagome lattice involving a staggered three-spin interaction $J_χ$ in addition to Heisenberg exchange couplings $J_1$ on nearest-neighbor bonds and $J_d$ across the diagonals of the hexagons. We explore the phase diagram using a combination of a classical approach, parton mean-field theory, and variational Monte Carlo methods. We obtain a variety of noncoplanar magnetic orders, including a phase that interpolates between cuboc-1 …
By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor ($J_1$), second-neighbor ($J_2$), and additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ on the triangular lattice. In the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model with $0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 140403 (2015)] find a p…
Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by Exact Diagonalisation of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreemen…
We suggest a class of two-dimensional lattice spin Hamiltonians describing non-Abelian SU(2) chiral spin liquids - spin-analogues of fractional non-Abelian quantum Hall states- with gapped bulk and gapless chiral edge excitations described by the SU(2)$_n$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory. The models are constructed from an array of a generalized spin-$n/2$ ladders with multi-spin exchange interaction which are coupled by isolated spins. Such models allow a controllable analytic treatment starting from the one-dimensional limit and are characterized by a bulk gap and non-Abeli…
We study a frustrated two-dimensional lattice spin model with Kitaev type interaction. The lattice is obtained from the honeycomb lattice by replacing half of its sites with triangles. Using the SO(3) Majorana representation of spin, the model is exactly mapped into a $Z_{2}$ lattice gauge theory of complex fermions with standard Gauss law constraint. We show that the ground state of the model is a chiral spin liquid, and it has gapless excitations. The Chern number of the ground state is $\pm 1$, implying the existence of chiral edge mode. The vortex excitation of the model is bound with a Ma…
Doubts have been raised on the representation of chiral spin liquids exhibiting topological order in terms of projected entangled pair states (PEPSs). Here, starting from a simple spin-1/2 chiral frustrated Heisenberg model, we show that a faithful representation of the chiral spin liquid phase is in fact possible in terms of a generic PEPS upon variational optimization. We find a perfectly chiral gapless edge mode and a rapid decay of correlation functions at short distances consistent with a bulk gap, concomitant with a gossamer long-range tail originating from a PEPS bulk-edge correspondenc…
We calculate dynamical spin structure factors for gapped chiral spin liquid states in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice using Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. In contrast to static (equal-time) structure factors, the dynamical structure factor shows clear signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking for chiral spin liquid states. In particular, momentum inversion $\bm{k} \to -\bm{k}$ symmetry as well as the six-fold rotation symmetry around the $Γ$-point are lost. We highlight other interesting features, such as a relatively flat onset of the two-spinon continuum…
The search for quantum spin liquids in frustrated quantum magnets recently has enjoyed a surge of interest, with various candidate materials under intense scrutiny. However, an experimental confirmation of a gapped topological spin liquid remains an open question. Here, we show that circularly-polarized light can provide a novel knob to drive frustrated Mott insulators into a chiral spin liquid (CSL), realizing an elusive quantum spin liquid with topological order. We find that the dynamics of a driven Kagome Mott insulator is well-captured by an effective Floquet spin model, with heating stro…
We argue that a relatively simple model containing only SU(2)-invariant chiral three-spin interactions on a Kagome lattice of S=1/2 spins can give rise to both a gapped and a gapless quantum spin liquid. Our arguments are rooted in a formulation in terms of network models of edge states and are backed up by a careful numerical analysis. For a uniform choice of chirality on the lattice, we realize the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state, i.e. a gapped spin liquid which is identified as the nu=1/2 bosonic Laughlin state. For staggered chiralities, a gapless spin liquid emerges which exhibits gapless spin ex…
We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first-, second-, and third-neighbor interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ by means of density matrix renormalization group. For small $J_2$ and $J_3$, this model sustains a time-reversal invariant quantum spin liquid phase. With increasing $J_2$ and $J_3$, we find in addition a $q=(0,0)$ Néel phase, a chiral spin liquid phase, a valence-bond crystal phase, and a complex non-coplanar magnetically ordered state with spins forming the vertices of a cuboctahedron known as a cuboc1 phase. Both the chiral…
The frustrated XY model on the honeycomb lattice has drawn lots of attentions because of the potential emergence of chiral spin liquid (CSL) with the increasing of frustrations or competing interactions. In this work, we study the extended spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XY model with nearest-neighbor ($J_1$), and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions in the presence of a three-spins chiral ($J_χ$) term using density matrix renormalization group methods. We obtain a quantum phase diagram with both conventionally ordered and topologically ordered phases. In particular, the long-sought Kalmeyer-Laughlin…
In the framework of Hofstadter`s approach we provide a detailed analysis of a realization of exotic topological states such as the Chern insulator with large Chern numbers. In a transverse homogeneous magnetic field a one-particle spectrum of fermions transforms to an intricate spectrum with a fine topological structure of the subbands. In a weak magnetic field $H$ for a rational magnetic flux, a topological phase with a large Chern number is realized near the half filling. There is an abnormal behavior of the Hall conductance ${σ_{xy}\simeq \frac{e}{2 H}}$. At half-filling, the number of chir…
We study the temperature (T) dependence of the dynamical structure factor of the chiral spin liquid phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model. We find, using a recently developed analytical approach, direct signatures of the Majorana modes associated with the non-Abelian Z_2 vortices (visons). In particular, a characteristic multiplet of discrete peaks at low but nonzero-T and its field dependence reflect the existence of thermally activated visons whose varying separation yields different splittings of the Majorana `zero' modes. The resonant processes involved are specific to the Majorana modes, and …
We point out that there are two different chiral spin liquid states on the triangular lattice and discuss the conducting states that are expected on doping them. These states labeled CS1 and CS2 are associated with two distinct topological orders with different edge states, although they both spontaneously break time reversal symmetry and exhibit the same quantized spin Hall conductance. While CSL1 is related to the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state, CSL2 is the $ν=4$ member of Kitaev's 16 fold way classification. Both states are described within the Abrikosov fermion representation of spins, and the ef…
We propose resonating valence bond wave functions for a spin-1 system on the torus that realize a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. The wave functions take the form of infinite dimensional matrix product states constructed from conformal blocks of the $\mathrm{SO}(3)_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This means that they are lattice analogues of the bosonic Moore-Read state introduced in fractional quantum Hall systems. The topological order of this system is revealed by explicit construction of three-fold degenerate ground states and analytical computation of the modular S and T matrices.
We study excitations in weakly interacting pairs of quantum spin ladders coupled through geometrically frustrated bonds. The ground state is a disordered spin liquid, that at high fields is replaced by an ordered chiral helimagnetic phase. The spectra observed by high-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the prototype compound Sul-Cu2Cl4 are qualitatively different from those in the previously studied frustration-free spin liquids. Beyond the critical field Hc=3.7 T, the soft mode that drives the quantum phase transition spawns two separate excitations: a gapless Goldstone mode an…
We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further …
Topological phases in frustrated quantum spin systems have fascinated researchers for decades. One of the earliest proposals for such a phase was the chiral spin liquid put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 as the bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Elusive for many years, recent times have finally seen a number of models that realize this phase. However, these models are somewhat artificial and unlikely to be found in realistic materials. Here, we take an important step towards the goal of finding a chiral spin liquid in nature by examining a physically motivated mo…
The Raman scattering with local optical excitation from the Majorana edge modes of Kitaev spin liquids and topological superconductors is studied theoretically. Although the effective one-dimensional model is common between these two cases, the coupling to the electromagnetic field is different. It is found that the Raman spectrum at low energy scales with $ω^3$ in Kitaev spin liquids while it shows the gap in topological superconductors. This is in sharp contrast to the infrared absorption, where the spectrum shows the gap in Kitaev spin liquids, while it behaves as $\sim ω^2$ in topological …
