We study $S=1/2$ dimer excitation in a coupled chain and dimer compound Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13} by inelastic neutron scattering technique. The Zeeman split of the dimer triplet by a staggered field is observed at low temperature. With the increase of temperature the effect of random field is detected by a drastic broadening of the triplet excitation. Basic dynamics of dimer in the staggered and random fields are experimentally identified in Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}.
We study a generalized honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic 2-spin exchange, and competing 4-spin interactions which serve to stabilize a staggered dimer state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo numerics, spin wave theory, and bond operator theory, we show that this model undergoes a strong first-order transition between a Neel state and a staggered dimer state upon increasing the strength of the 4-spin interactions. We attribute the strong first order character of this transition to the spinless n…
We have studied the excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$ quantum spin ladder with staggered dimerization by dimer series expansions, diagrammatic analysis of an effective interacting Bose gas of local triplets, and exact diagonalization of small clusters. We find that the model has two massive phases, with predominant inter-chain (rung) or intra-chain correlations. The transition from the rung dimer into the intra-chain dimer phase is characterized by softening of the triplet spectrum at $k=π$. The excitation spectrum as well as the spin correlations away from and close to the critical line are …
We investigate the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and an external field in spin 1/2 dimers. For isolated dimers and at low field, we derive simple expressions for the staggered and uniform magnetizations which show that the orientation of the uniform magnetization can deviate significantly from that of the external field. In fact, in the limit where the ${\bf D}$ vector of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is parallel to the external field, the uniform magnetization actually becomes {\it perpendicular} to the field. For larger fields, we show that the staggered magnetizati…
In the weak-coupling regime of the continuous theories, two sets of one-loop renormalization group equations are derived and solved to disclose the phase diagrams of the antiferromagnetic generalized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder under the effect of (I) a staggered external magnetic field and (II) an explicit dimerization. In model (I), the splitting of the SU(2)$_2$ critical line into U(1) and Z$_2$ critical surfaces is observed; while in model (II), two critical surfaces arising from their underlying critical lines with SU(2)$_2$ and Z$_2$ characteristics merge into an SU(2)$_1$ critical surface o…
Inspired by the recently theoretical development relevant to the experimental data of TlCuCl$_3$, particularly those associated with the universal scaling between the Néel temperature $T_N$ and the staggered magnetization density $M_s$, we carry a detailed investigation of 3-dimensional (3D) dimerized quantum antiferromagnets using the first principles quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The motivation behind our study is to better understand the microscopic effects on these scaling relations of $T_N$ and $M_s$, hence to shed some light on some of the observed inconsistency between the theoretic…
We compute the $K$ and $L_{3}$ -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum of the columnar and the staggered quantum dimer states accessible to the square lattice Heisenberg magnet. Utilizing a bond operator representation mean field theory we investigate the RIXS features of the one- and two-triplon excitation spectrum supported by the quantum dimer model in the background of condensed singlet excitation. We find that the two-triplon excitation boundary lies within a 124 (78) meV to (414) 345 meV energy range for the columnar (staggered) phase. We estimated the two-triplon gap t…
We investigate the scaling properties of the excitation energies and transition amplitudes of the one-dimensional spin-$1\over 2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model exposed to an external perturbation. Two types of perturbations are discussed in detail: a staggered field and a dimerized field.
We study the S=1/2 quantum spin ladder system with the four-spin exchange, using density matrix renormalization group method and an exact diagonalization method. Recently, the phase transition in this system and its universality class are studied. But there remain controversies whether the phase transition is second order type or the other type and the nature of order parameter. There are arguments that the massless phase appears. But this does not agree with our previous result. Analyzing DMRG data, we try a new approach in order to determine a phase which appears after the phase transition. …
We investigate ground state properties of the half-filled staggered-flux Hubbard model on a square lattice. Energy gaps to charge and spin excitations and magnetic as well as dimer orders are calculated as a function of interaction strength $U/t$ by means of constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the system is a semi-metal at $U/t\lesssim 5.6$ and a Mott insulator with long-range antiferromagnetic order at $U/t \gtrsim 6.6$. In the range $5.6\lesssim U/t\lesssim 6.6$, the ground state is an correlated insulator where both magnetic and dimer orders are absent. Furthermore…
A ferrimagnetic spin model composed of $S=1/2$ spin-dimers and $S=5/2$ spin-chains is studied by combining the bond-operator representation (for $S=1/2$ spin-dimers) and Holstein-Primakoff transformation (for $S=5/2$ spins). A finite interaction $J_{\rm DF}$ between the spin-dimer and the spin chain makes the spin chains ordered antiferromagnetically and the spin dimers polarized. The effective interaction between the spin chains, mediated by the spin dimers, is calculated up to the third order. The staggered magnetization in the spin dimer is shown proportional to $J_{\rm DF}$. It presents an…
We study a frustrated spin-$S$ staggered-dimer Heisenberg model on square lattice by using the bond-operator representation for quantum spins, and investigate the emergence of classical magnetic order from the quantum mechanical (staggered-dimer singlet) ground state for increasing $S$. Using triplon analysis, we find the critical couplings for this quantum phase transition to scale as $1/S(S+1)$. We extend the triplon analysis to include the effect of quintet dimer-states, which proves to be essential for establishing the classical order (Néel or collinear in the present study) for large $S$,…
We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descrip…
We study the critical properties in cubic systems of antiferromagnetically coupled spin dimers near magnetic-field induced quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points in the zero-temperature phase diagrams are determined from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, scaling properties of the uniform magnetization and the staggered transverse magnetization across the quantum phase transition in magnetic fields are calculated. The critical exponents are derived from Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find excellent agreement between the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the analytical …
We study two-leg Heisenberg ladder with four-spin cyclic interaction using the (dynamical) density-matrix renormalization group method. We demonstrate the dependence of the low-lying excitations in the spin wave, staggered dimer order, and scalar-chirality order structure factors on the four-spin cyclic interaction. We find that the cyclic interaction enhances spin-spin correlations with wave vector around momentum $(q_x,q_y)=(\fracπ{2},0)$. Also, the presence of long-range order in the staggered dimer and scalar-chirality phases is confirmed by a $δ$-function peak contribution of the structur…
The mineral malachite, Cu2(OD)2CO3, has a quantum spin-liquid ground state and no long-range magnetic order down to at least T=0.4 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements show that the excitation spectrum consists of dispersive gapped singlet-triplet excitations, characteristic of spin-1/2 dimer-forming Heisenberg antiferromagnets. We identify a new two-dimensional dimerized coupling scheme with strong interdimer coupling J'/J1~0.3 that places malachite between strongly coupled alternating chains, square lattice antiferromagnets, and infinite-legged ladders. The geometry of the interactio…
The Néel temperature, staggered magnetization density, as well as the spinwave velocity of a three-dimensional (3D) quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic disorder (randomness) are calculated using first principles non-perturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we examine the validity of universal scaling relations that are related to these three studied physical quantities. These relations are relevant to experimental data and are firmly established for clean (regular) 3D dimerized spin-1/2 Heisenberg models. Remarkably, our numerical results show that the considere…
The spin-1/2 J1-J2 antiferromagnet is a prototypical model for frustrated magnetism and one possible candidate for a realization of a spin liquid phase. The generalization of this system on the anisotropic square lattice is given by the J1-J2-J1'-J2' Heisenberg model, which can be treated by a renormalization group (RG) analysis of coupled frustrated chains. The J1-J2-J1'-J2'-model shows an interesting interplay of Néel order, dimerization, and spin liquid behavior. The analytical findings supported by numerical results indicate that for the isotropic model the phase at intermediate coupling s…
We present a $^2$D NMR investigation of the gapped spin-1/2 compound $Cu_2 (C_5 H_{12} N_2)_2 Cl_4$. Our measurements reveal the presence of a magnetic field induced transverse staggered magnetization (TSM) which persists well below and above the field-induced 3D long-range magnetically ordered (FIMO) phase. The symmetry of this TSM is different from that of the TSM induced by the order parameter of the FIMO phase. Its origin, field dependence and symmetry can be explained by an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as shown by DMRG calculations on a spin-1/2 ladder. This leads us to …
We consider the spin-1/2 hamiltonians proposed by Cano and Fendley [J. Cano and P. Fendley, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 067205 (2010)] which were built to promote the well-known Rokshar-Kivelson (RK) point of quantum dimer models to spin-1/2 wavefunctions. We first show that these models, besides the exact degeneracy of RK point, support gapless spinless excitations as well as a spin gap in the thermodynamic limit, signatures of an unusual spin liquid. We then extend the original construction to create a continuous family of SU(2) invariant spin models that reproduces the phase diagram of the quantu…
The magnetic properties of the interacting dimer system TlCuCl3 are investigated within a bond-operator formulation. The observed field-induced staggered magnetic order perpendicular to the field is described as a Bose condensation of magnons which are linear combinations of dimer singlet and triplet modes. This technique accounts for the magnetization curve and for the field dependence of the magnon dispersion curves observed by high-field neutron scattering measurements.
We present the phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the two leg ladder with cyclic four spin exchange, determined by a combination of Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. We find six different phases and regimes: the rung singlet phase, a ferromagnetic phase, two symmetry broken phases with staggered dimers and staggered scalar chiralities, and a gapped region with dominant vector chirality or collinear spin correlations. We localize the phase transitions and investigate their nature.
The ground states of the $S=\frac12$ Heisenberg chain with the nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings are numerically investigated in a staggered magnetic field. While the staggered magnetic field may induce the Néel-type excitation gap, and it is characterized by the Gaussian fixed point in the spin-fluid region, the crossover to the behavior controlled by the Ising fixed point is expected to be observed for the spontaneously dimerized state at finite field. Treating a low-lying excitation gap by the phenomenological renormalization-group method, we numeric…
We revisit bulk FeSe through the systematic first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find that there are a series of staggered $n$-mer antiferromagnetic (AFM) states with corresponding energies below that of the collinear AFM state which is the ground state for the parent compounds of most iron-based superconductors. Here the staggered $n$-mer ($n$ any integer $>1$) means that a set of $n$ adjacent spins parallel on a line along $b$-axis with spins in antiparallel between $n$-mers and along $a$-axis. Among them, the lowest energy states are quasi-degenerate staggered dimer and st…
Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken…
Field-induced excitation gaps in quantum spin chains are an interesting phenomenon related to confinements of topological excitations. In this paper, I present a novel type of this phenomenon. I show that an effective magnetic field with a fourfold screw symmetry induces the excitation gap accompanied by dimer orders. The gap and dimer orders induced so exhibit characteristic power-law dependence on the fourfold screw-symmetric field. Moreover, the field-induced dimer order and the field-induced Néel order coexist when the external uniform magnetic field, the fourfold screw-symmetric field, an…
We present a quantum Monte Carlo investigation of the finite-temperature phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the square lattice. We use the sweeping cluster algorithm, which allows to implement exactly the dimer constraint, supplemented with a equal-time directed loop move that allows to sample winding sectors. We find a high-temperature critical phase with power-law correlations that extend down to the Rokshar-Kivelson point, in the vicinity of which a re-entrance effect in the lines of constant exponent is found. For small values of the kinetic energy strength, we find finite-tempera…
A frustrated spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain model comprising a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling with the bond alternation, $J_1(1\pmδ)<0$, and an antiferromagnetic second-neighbor exchange coupling $J_2>0$ is studied at zero and weak magnetic fields by means of density matrix renormalization group calculations of order parameters, correlation functions and the entanglement entropy as well as an Abelian bosonization analysis. At zero magnetic field, the bond alternation $δ>0$ suppresses the gapless phase characterized by a vector-chiral (VC) long-range order (LRO) and a quasi-LRO of an incommensur…
Motivated by recent experiments on Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$, we propose a theory describing low-temperature properties in magnetic field $h$ of dimer spin-$\frac12$ systems on a stacked triangular lattice with spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. Considering the interdimer interaction as a perturbation we derive in the second order the elementary excitations (triplon) spectrum and the effective interaction between triplons at the quantum critical point $h=h_c$ separating the paramagnetic phase ($h<h_c$) and a magnetically ordered one ($h_c<h<h_s$, where $h_s$ is the saturation field). Express…
We investigate quantum phase transitions among the spin-gap phases and the magnetically ordered phases in a two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnetic spin system, which interpolates several important models such as the orthogonal-dimer model as well as the model on the 1/5-depleted square lattice. By computing the ground state energy, the staggered susceptibility and the spin gap by means of the series expansion method, we determine the ground-state phase diagram and discuss the role of geometrical frustration. In particular, it is found that a RVB-type spin-gap phase proposed recently for …
We apply the infinite time-evolving-block-decimation algorithm to calculate the dynamical spin-structure factors of the quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) S=1 antiferromagnetic spin system with the single-ion anisotropy and the bond alternation. We find that excitation continuum originating from magnons is quantized, when the staggered field induced by the weak inter-chain interaction is taken into account. The excitation energies of the quantized excitation spectra are well explained by negative zeros of the Airy functions, when the easy-axis anisotropy is strong and the ground state is located deep…
We study the effect of spin-Peierls instability on the phase-diagram of a frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder, with weak transverse and diagonal rung coupling. Our analysis focuses on a one-dimensional version of the model (i.e. a single two-leg ladder) where we consider two forms of spin-Peierls (SP) instabilities on the legs: columnar dimers (CD) and staggered dimers (SD). We particularly examine the regime of parameters (corresponding to an intermediate XXZ anisotropy) where the SP and rung coupling terms are equally relevant. In both the CD and SD cases we find that the effective …
We consider the exchange Hamiltonian H_ST = -J Sum_{<rr'>} (2 S_r S_r' - 1/2) (2 T_r T_r' - 1/2) describing two isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets coupled by a quartic term on equivalent bonds. The model is relevant for systems with orbital degeneracy and strong electron-vibron coupling in the large Hubbard repulsion limit. To investigate the ground state properties we use a Green's Function Monte Carlo, calculating energy gaps and correlation functions, the latter through the forward walking technique. In one dimension we find that the ground state is a ``crystal'' of valence bond…
Puzzled by the indication of a new critical theory for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with a spatially staggered anisotropy on the square lattice as suggested in \cite{Wenzel08}, we study a similar anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. The critical point where the phase transition occurs due to the dimerization as well as the critical exponent $ν$ are analyzed in great detail. Remarkly, using most of the available data points in conjunction with the expected finite-size scaling ansatz with a sub-leading correction indeed leads to a consistent $ν= 0.691(2)$ with that ca…
Motivated by the unexpected Monte Carlo results as well as the theoretical proposal of a large correction to scaling for the critical theory of the 2-d staggered-dimer spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we study the phase transitions induced by dimerization of several dimerized quantum Heisenberg models with spatial anisotropy using first principles Monte Carlo method. Remarkably, while our Monte Carlo data for all the models considered here, including the herringbone- and ladder-dimer models on the square lattice, are compatible with the recently proposed scenario of an enhanced…
We simulate the three-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with a spatially anisotropic ladder pattern using the first principles Monte Carlo method. Our motivation is to investigate quantitatively the newly established universal relation $T_N/\sqrt{c^3}$ $\propto$ ${\cal M}_s$ near the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with dimerization. Here $T_N$, $c$, and ${\cal M}_s$ are the Néel temperature, the spinwave velocity, and the staggered magnetization density, respectively. For all the physical quantities considered here, such as $T_N$ and ${\cal M}_s$, our Monte Carlo results agree nice…
The spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices are investigated via the finite projected entangled pair states (PEPS) method. Using the recently developed gradient optimization method combining with Monte Carlo sampling techniques, we are able to obtain the ground states energies that are competitive to the best results. The calculations show that there is no Néel order, dimer order and plaquette order in the region of 0.42 $\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim$ 0.6, suggesting a single spin liquid phase in the intermediate region. Furthermore, the calculated staggered spin, dimer and plaque…
Using the matrix product formalism, we define a multi-parameter family of spin models on one dimensional chains, with nearest and next-nearest neighbor anti-ferromagnetic interaction for which exact analytical expressions can be found for its doubly degenerate ground states. The family of Hamiltonians which we define, depend on 5 continuous parameters and the Majumdar-Ghosh model is a particular point in this parameter space. Like the Majumdar-Ghosh model, the doubly degenerate ground states of our models have a very simple structure, they are the product of entangled states on adjacent sites.…
We analyse several thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Kondo necklace using finite-temperature stochastic series expansion. In agreement with previous zero-temperature findings the model is shown to exhibit a quantum critical point (QCP), separating an antiferromagnetic from a paramagnetic dimerized state at a critical Kondo exchange-coupling strength $J_{c}\approx 1.4$. We evaluate the temperature dependent uniform and staggered structure factors as well as the uniform and staggered susceptibilities and the local 'impurity' susceptibility close to the QCP as well as in the ordered…
We study the phase transition between the high temperature Coulomb phase and the low temperature staggered crystal phase in three dimensional classical O(N) spin-ice model. Compared with the previously proposed CP(1) formalism on the Coulomb-crystal transition of the classical dimer model, our description based on constrained order parameter is more conventional, due to a fundamental difference between the O(N) and the dimer model. A systematic epsilon and 1/N expansion are used to study the universality class of the phase transition, and a stable fixed point is found based on our calculations…
We use perturbative series expansions about a staggered dimerized ground state to compute the ground state energy, triplet excitation spectra and spectral weight for a one-dimensional model in which each site has an $S=\case 1/2$ spin ${\bf S}_i$ and a pseudospin ${\bf T}_i$, representing a doubly degenerate orbital. An explicit dimerization is introduced to allow study of the confinement of spinon excitations. The elementary triplet represents a bound state of two spinons, and is stable over much of the Brillouine zone. A special line is found in the gapped spin-liquid phase, on which the tri…
The exact factorized ground state of a heterogeneous (ferrimagnetic) spin model which is composed of two spins ($ρ, σ$) has been presented in detail. The Hamiltonian is not necessarily translational invariant and the exchange couplings can be competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic arbitrarily between different sub-lattices to build many practical models such as dimerized and tetramerized materials and ladder compounds. The condition to get a factorized ground state is investigated for non-frustrated spin models in the presence of a uniform and a staggered magnetic field. According to th…
We observed a field-induced staggered magnetization in the 2D frustrated dimer-singlet spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 by 11B NMR, from which the magnitudes of the intradimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the staggered g-tensor were determined. These anisotropic interactions cause singlet-triplet mixing and eliminate a quantum phase transition at the expected critical field Hc for gap closing. They also provide a quantitative account for some puzzling phenomena such as the onset of a uniform magnetization below the and the persistence of the excitation gap above Hc. The gap was accurately deter…
The effect of dimerization on the random antiferomagnetic Heisenberg chain with spin 1/2 is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state energy, the energy gap distribution and the string order parameter are calculated. Using the finite size scaling analysis, the dimerization dependence of the these quantities are obtained. The ground state energy gain due to dimerization behaves as $u^a$ with $a > 2$ where $u$ denotes the degree of dimerization, suggesting the absence of spin-Peierls instability. It is explicitly shown that the string long range order survives …

Puzzled by the indication of a new critical theory for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with a spatially staggered anisotropy on the square lattice as suggested in \cite{Wenzel08}, we re-investigate the phase transition of this model induced by dimerization. We focus on studying the finite-size scaling of the observables $ρ_{s1} L$ and $ρ_{s2} L$, where $L$ stands for the spatial box sizes used in the simulations and $ρ_{si}$ with $i \in \{1,2\}$ is the spin-stiffness in $i$-direction. We find by performing finite-size scaling using the observable $ρ_{s2} L$, which corresponds to the spatial dire…
The one dimensional dimer model is investigated and the localization length calculated exactly. The presence of delocalized states at $E_c = ε_{a,b}$ of two possible values of the chemical potential in case of $\midε_a-ε_b\mid \leq 2 $ is confirmed and the corresponding indices of the localization length were calculated. The singular integral equation connecting the density of states with the inverse localization length is solved and the analytic expression for the density of states compared with the numerical calculations.
