Neutrinos and Lepton Flavour Violation

Supersymmetric Lepton Flavour Violation

In supersymmetric models new sources of lepton flavour violation (LFV) may enhance the rates of charged lepton flavour violating processes, like mu to e gamma, and generate distinct final states at future colliders, e.g. tau mu + jets + missing energy. We discuss the role of chargino pair production for the LFV signals at e+e- colliders.

Patterns of Flavour Violation in the RSc Model, the LHT Model and Supersymmetric Flavour Models

We summarize the results on patterns of flavour violation in a Randall-Sundrum model with custodial protection (RSc) and compare them with those identified in the Littlest Higgs Model with T--parity (LHT) and in a number of SUSY Flavour Models. While K decays play in this presentation a prominent role, the inclusion of B physics and lepton flavour violation is crucial in the distinction between these three popular extensions of the Standard Model (SM) by means of flavour physics.

Lepton Number and Lepton Flavour Violation in Left-Right Symmetric Models

The sources of lepton flavour and lepton number violation in the left-right symmetric models are reviewed and the most sensitive processes to these violations are discussed. Both the non-SUSY and SUSY versions of the theories are considered. Present and future experimental constraints at low as well as at high energies are discussed. Some emphasis has been put on the doubly charged particle production at future colliders.

Charged Lepton Flavour Violation in Littlest Higgs model with T-parity

The Little Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) belongs to the non-minimal flavour violating model. This model has new sources of flavour and CP violation both in quark and leptonic sectors. These new sources of flavour violation originates by the interaction of Standard Model (SM) fermions with heavy gauge bosons and heavy (or mirror) fermions. In this work we will present the impact of the new flavour structure of T-parity models on flavour violations in leptonic sector.

CP Violation in Supersymmetry with Effective Minimal Flavour Violation

We analyze CP violation in supersymmetry with Effective Minimal Flavour Violation, as recently proposed in arXiv:1011.0730. Unlike the case of standard Minimal Flavour Violation, we show that all the phases allowed by the flavour symmetry can be sizable without violating existing Electric Dipole Moment constraints, thus solving the SUSY CP problem. The EDMs at one and two loops are precisely analyzed as well as their correlations with the expected CP asymmetries in B physics.

Neutrino Physics, Lepton Flavour Violation and the LHC

We present new physics models and discuss the rôle of the latter in disentangling them. In particular, we show how the interplay of different observables allows to derive important information on the underlying mechanism of lepton flavour violation. As an example, we discuss the impact of a type-I SUSY seesaw concerning lepton flavour violation at low energies and at colliders (LHC and a …

Violations of lepton-flavour universality in P -> l nu decays: a model-independent analysis

We analyse the violations of lepton-flavour universality in the ratios B(P -> l nu)/B(P -> l' nu) using a general effective theory approach, discussing various flavour-symmetry breaking patterns of physics beyond the SM. We find that in models with Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation the effects are too small to be observed in the next generations of experiments in all relevant meson systems (P = Pi, K, B). In a Grand Unified framework with a minimal breaking of the flavour symmetry, the effects remain small in Pi and K decays while large violations of lepton-flavour universality are possible in …

We take into account the most recent bounds on flavour violating rare lepton decays. Taking the SPS1a' scenario as an example, we show that some of the lepton flavour violating branching ratios of neutralinos and sleptons can be sizable (~ 5-10%). We study the impact of the lepton flavour violating neutralino and slepton decays on the di-lepton mass distributions measured at LHC. We find that they can result in n…

Gauging Lepton Flavour

The flavour lepton symmetry is gauged for both the Standard Model flavor group and its extension with three degenerate right-handed neutrinos. As a consequence of anomaly cancellation, exotic leptons are introduced which induce a see-saw mechanism that generates the masses of the SM leptons. The model is compared with Minimal Flavour Violation, the difference between the low-energy effective operators resulting is identified, as well as the distinctive experimental signals, particularly promising in the $μ-τ$ sector.

Leptogenesis in the E$_6$SSM: Flavour Dependent Lepton Asymmetries

Leptogenesis with exclusively low-energy CP Violation in the Context of Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation

We analyze lepton flavour violation (LFV) and the generation of the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) within a generalized minimal lepton flavour violation framework with three quasi-degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos. The BAU which is obtained through radiative resonant leptogenesis can successfully be generated widely independent of the Majorana scale in this scenario and flavour effects are found to be relevant. Neutrino-Mass Hierarchies and Non-linear Representation of Lepton-Flavour Symmetry

Lepton-flavour symmetry in the Standard Model is broken by small masses for charged leptons and neutrinos. Introducing neutrino masses via dimension-5 operators associated to lepton-number violation at a very high scale, the corresponding coupling matrix may still have entries of order 1, resembling the situation in the quark sector with large top Yukawa coupling. As we have shown recently, in such a situation one may introduce the coupling matrices between lepton and Higgs fields as non-linear representations of lepton-flavour symmetry within an effective-theory framework. This allows us to s…

Lepton Flavour Eigenstates do not Exist if Neutrinos are Massive: `Neutrino Oscillations' Reconsidered

If neutrinos are massive, `lepton flavour eigenstates' are absent from the amplitudes of all Standard Model processes. Measurements of $Γ(π\to e ν)/Γ(π\to μν)$ and of the MNS matrix are shown to exclude the existence of such states. Incoherent production of neutrinos of different flavour modifies the usual oscillation phase derived assuming production of a lepton flavour eigenstate. The new prediction can be tested in long line-base experiments by comparison of `$ν_μ$ disappearance' of neutrinos from pion and kaon decay.

On the Impact of Flavour Oscillations in Leptogenesis

When lepton flavour effects in thermal leptogenesis are active, they introduce important differences with respect to the case in which they are neglected, the so-called one-flavour approximation. We investigate analytically and numerically the transition from the one-flavour to the two-flavour case when the $τ$-lepton flavour becomes distinguishable from the other two flavours. We study the impact of the oscillations of the asymmetries in lepton flavour space on the final lepton asymmetries, for the hierarchical right-handed neutrino mass spectrum. Flavour oscillations project the lepton state…

Charged lepton flavour violation in supersymmetric and holographic composite Higgs models with flavour symmetries

We discuss charged lepton flavour violating processes such as mu -> e gamma in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model and in models with gauge-Higgs unification and a warped extra dimension. In both classes of models the processes turn out to be compatible with present experimental bounds, but can be detected by future experiments, thanks to the presence of a flavour symmetry G_f which constrains the form of the relevant couplings. The symmetry G_f is chosen to be finite, discrete and non-abelian and also helps to predict the peculiar lepton mixing pattern.

Lepton mixing induced by flavour symmetry and Leptogenesis constraints

Flavour models may display a relation between the CP-violating asymmetry for leptogenesis and low-energy parameters. We present a model displaying the link between deviations from the mixing scheme and leptogenesis.

Majorana Neutrino Masses in the RGEs for Lepton Flavour Violation

We suppose that the observed neutrino masses can be parametrised by a lepton number violating dimension-five operator, and calculate the mixing of double insertions of this operator into lepton flavour changing dimension-six operators of the standard model effective theory. This allows to predict the log-enhanced, but $m_ν^2$-suppressed lepton flavour violation that is generic to high-scale Majorana neutrino mass models. We also consider the Two Higgs Doublet Model, where the second Higgs allows the construction of three additional dimension-five operators, and evaluate the corresponding anoma…

Quark masses, CKM angles and Lepton Flavour Universality violation

A properly defined and suitably broken $U(2)$ flavour symmetry leads to successful quantitative relations between quark mass ratios and CKM angles. At the same time the intrinsic distinction introduced by $U(2)$ between the third and the first two families of quarks and leptons may support anomalies in charged and neutral current semi-leptonic $B$-decays of the kind tentatively observed in current flavour experiments. We show how this is possible by the exchange of the $(3,1)_{2/3}$ vector leptoquark in two $U(2)$-models with significantly different values of Lepton Flavour Universality violat…

Electric dipole moments from spontaneous CP violation in SU(3)-flavoured SUSY

The SUSY flavour problem is deeply related to the origin of flavour and hence to the origin of the SM Yukawa couplings themselves. Since all CP-violation in the SM is restricted to the flavour sector, it is possible that the SUSY CP problem is related to the origin of flavour as well. In this work, we present three variations of an SU(3) flavour model with spontaneous CP violation. Such models explain the hierarchy in the fermion masses and mixings, and predict the structure of the flavoured soft SUSY breaking terms. In such a situation, both SUSY flavour and CP problems do not exist. We use e…

$R$-Parity Violation and Flavour Violation

The MSSM with $R$-Parity violation allows flavour changing neutral currents through two mechanisms, directly through one loop diagrams, and indirectly through the generation of flavour violation in the sparticle sector. We discuss the use of these mechanisms for constraining $R$-Parity violation, and show that the indirect mechanism parametrised in terms of the running of the soft masses from the unification or Planck scale typically dominates previously calculated effects. We discuss neutrino mass generation, $μ\to eγ$, $b\to sγ$, and $K^0-\bar K^0$ mixing as examples.

Two-Higgs-doublet models with Minimal Flavour Violation

The tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents in the two-Higgs-doublet models can be suppressed by protecting the breaking of either flavour or flavour-blind symmetries, but only the first choice, implemented by the application of the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, is stable under quantum corrections. Moreover, a two-Higgs-doublet model with Minimal Flavour Violation enriched with flavour-blind phases can explain the anomalies recently found in the Delta F = 2 transitions, namely the large CP-violating phase in B_s mixing and the tension between epsilon_K and S_ψ_K.

Various definitions of Minimal Flavour Violation for Leptons

Neutrino masses imply the violation of lepton flavour and new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, flavour change has only been observed in oscillations. In analogy with the quark sector, we could deduce the existence of a principle of Minimal Flavour Violation also for Leptons. Such an extension is not straightforward, since the mechanisms generating neutrino masses are unknown and many scenarios can be envisaged. Thus, we explore some possible definitions of MFVL and propose a notion that can include many models. We build an R-parity violating neutrino mass model in agreement with our…

B-anomalies related to leptons and lepton flavour violation: new directions in model building

B-decays mediated by both charged currents and neutral currents have provided hints of violation of lepton flavour universality. By assuming an explanation of these anomalies in terms of new physics at the TeV scale affecting the third fermion generation, we review the relevant constraints. In particular we illustrate the effects of electroweak radiative corrections and their impact on a consistent interpretation of the data. Neutrino Masses and Lepton Flavour Violation in Thick Brane Scenarios

We address the issue of lepton flavour violation and neutrino masses in the ``fat-brane'' paradigm, where flavour changing processes are suppressed by localising different fermion field wave-functions at different positions (in the extra dimensions) in a thick brane. We study the consequences of suppressing lepton number violating charged lepton decays within this scenario for lepton masses and mixing angles. Lepton flavour violation from right-handed neutrino thresholds

Charged lepton flavour violation is reappraised in the context of supersymmetric see-saw mechanism. Leptogenesis constraints from flavour symmetry induced lepton mixing

In models with flavour symmetries added to the gauge group of the Standard Model the CP-violating asymmetry necessary for leptogenesis may be related with low-energy parameters.
