We show that Rabi oscillations of a degenerate fermionic or bosonic gas trapped in a double-well potential can be exploited for the interferometric measurement of external forces at micrometer length scales. The Rabi interferometer is less sensitive, but easier to implement, than the Mach-Zehnder since it does not require dynamical beam-splitting/recombination processes. As an application we propose a measurement of the Casimir-Polder force acting between the atoms and a dielectric surface. We find that even if the interferometer is fed with a coherent state of relatively small number of atoms, and in the presence of realistic experimental noise, the force can be measured with a sensitivity sufficient to discriminate between thermal and zero-temperature regimes of the Casimir-Polder potential. Higher sensitivities can be reached with spin squeezed states.
We propose a new method to measure Casimir-Polder force in an optical cavity by means of atomic excitations. We utilize a framework in which Unruh-DeWitt Hamiltonian mimics the full matter-field interaction and find a connection between the excitation rate of the two-level atom and the Casimir-Polder energy, allowing to map one onto the other. We argue that such a realization opens a route to study Casimir-Polder potentials through measurement of excited state's population in large, spatially compact ensembles of atoms.
Thermal and nonthermal scaling of the Casimir-Polder interaction in a black hole spacetime
We find the low-temperature behavior of the Casimir-Polder free energy for a polarizable and magnetizable atom interacting with a plate made of ferromagnetic dielectric material. It is shown that the corresponding Casimir-Polder entropy goes to zero with vanishing temperature, i.e., the Nernst heat theorem is satisfied, if the dc conductivity of the plate material is disregarded in calculations. If the dc conductivity is taken into account, the Nernst theorem is violated. These results are discussed in light of recent experiments.
We investigate theoretically the Casimir-Polder potential of an atom which is driven by a laser field close to a surface. This problem is addressed in the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics using the Green's tensor formalism and we distinguish between two different approaches, a perturbative ansatz and a method based on Bloch equations. We apply our results to a concrete example, namely an atom close to a perfectly conducting mirror, and create a scenario where the tunable Casimir-Polder potential becomes similar to the respective potential of an undriven atom due to fluctuating …
Atom-surface forces using excited states have a host of compelling applications, including repulsive and lateral forces. However, such states can be fragile and difficult to prepare. Here we report an explicit normal-mode based calculation of the Casimir-Polder potential between a ground-state atom and a non-dispersive surface in the presence of an external quantised field. The potential we derive shares some features with that of excited-state Casimir-Polder forces even though we consider a ground-state atom. Our work provides a physically transparent and intuitive picture of driven Casimir-P…
We consider the out-of-thermal-equilibrium Casimir-Polder interaction between atoms of He$^*$, Na, Cs, and Rb and a cavity wall made of sapphire coated with a vanadium dioxide film which undergoes the dielectric-to-metal phase transition with increasing wall temperature. Numerical computations of the Casimir-Polder force and its gradient as the functions of atom-wall separation and wall temperature are made when the latter exceeds the temperature of the environment. The obtained results are compared with those in experiment on measuring the gradient of the Casimir-Polder force between $^{87}$R…

An atom irradiated by an off-resonant laser field near a surface is expected to experience the sum of two fundamental potentials, the optical potential of the laser field and the Casimir--Polder potential of the surface. Here, we report a new non-additive potential, namely the laser-induced Casimir--Polder potential, which arises from a correlated coupling of the atom with both the laser and the quantum vacuum. We apply this result to an experimentally realizable scenario of an atomic mirror with an evanescent laser beam leaking out of a surface. We show that the non-additive term is significa…
We study the effective range expansion of scattering on a real Casimir-Polder potential. We use Liouville transformations which transform the potential landscape while preserving the reflection and transmission amplitudes. We decompose the scattering calculation in two more elementary problems, one for the homogeneous 1/z^4 potential and the other one for the correction to this idealization. We use the symmetries of the transformed problem and the properties of the scattering matrices to derive an improved effective range expansion leading to a more accurate expansion of scattering amplitudes …
We consider Casimir-Polder and Casimir forces with finite dissipation by coupling heat baths to the dipoles introducing, this way, dissipation from 'first principles'. We derive a representation of the free energy as an integral over real frequencies, which can be viewd as an generalization of the 'remarkable formula' introduced by Ford et. al. 1985. For instance, we obtain a nonperturbative representation for the atom-atom and atom-wall interactions. We investigate several limiting cases. From the limit $T\to0$ we show that the third law of thermodynamics cannot be violated within the given a…
An exactly solvable model of two three-dimensional harmonic oscillators interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field: the Casimir-Polder potential
We propose a method to separate enantiomers using parity violation in the Casimir-Polder potential between chiral mirrors and chiral molecules. The proposed setup involves a molecular beam composed of chiral molecules passing through a planar cavity consisting of two chiral mirrors. Enantiomers of opposite handedness are deflected differently due to a chiral dependence of the Casimir-Polder potential resulting in the separation of the enantiomers. Our setup provides an alternative experimental tool for enantiomer separation, as well as shedding light on the fundamental properties of the Casimi…
