The use of open-loop coding can be easily extended to a closed-loop concatenated code if the channel has access to feedback. This can be done by introducing a feedback transmission scheme as an inner code. In this paper, this process is investigated for the case when a linear feedback scheme is implemented as an inner code and, in particular, over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with noisy feedback. To begin, we look to derive an optimal linear feedback scheme by optimizing over the received signal-to-noise ratio. From this optimization, an asymptotically optimal linear feedback scheme is produced and compared to other well-known schemes. Then, the linear feedback scheme is implemented as an inner code to a concatenated code over the AWGN channel with noisy feedback. This code shows improvements not only in error exponent bounds, but also in bit-error-rate and frame-error-rate. It is also shown that the if the concatenated code has total blocklength L and the inner code has blocklength, N, the inner code blocklength should scale as N = O(C/R), where C is the capacity of the channel and R is the rate of the concatenated code. Simulations with low density parity check (LDPC) and turbo codes are provided to display practical applications and their error rate benefits.
Linear coding schemes have been the main choice of coding for the additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel (AWGN-BC) with noiseless feedback in the literature. The achievable rate regions of these schemes go well beyond the capacity region of the AWGN-BC without feedback. In this paper, a concatenating coding design for the $K$-user AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is proposed that relies on linear feedback schemes to achieve rate tuples outside the no-feedback capacity region. Specifically, a linear feedback code for the AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is used as an inner code that creates an e…

This paper considers the achievability and converse bounds on the maximal channel coding rate at a given blocklength and error probability over AWGN channels. The problem stems from covert communication with Gaussian codewords. By re-visiting [18], we first present new and more general achievability bounds for random coding schemes under maximal or average probability of error requirements. Such general bounds are then applied to covert communication in AWGN channels where codewords are generated from Gaussian distribution while meeting the maximal power constraint. Further comparison is made …
We consider the problem of communication over a two-user Additive White Gaussian Noise Broadcast Channel (AWGN-BC) with an AWGN Multiple Access (MAC) active feedback. We describe a constructive reduction from this setup to the well-studied setup of linear-feedback coding over the AWGN-BC with noiseless feedback (and different parameters). This reduction facilitates the design of linear-feedback coding schemes in the (passive) noiseless feedback regime, which can then be easily and constructively transformed into coding schemes in the MAC feedback regime that attain the exact same rates. Our co…
We propose a new coding scheme using only one lattice that achieves the $\frac{1}{2}\log(1+\SNR)$ capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with lattice decoding, when the signal-to-noise ratio $\SNR>e-1$. The scheme applies a discrete Gaussian distribution over an AWGN-good lattice, but otherwise does not require a shaping lattice or dither. Thus, it significantly simplifies the default lattice coding scheme of Erez and Zamir which involves a quantization-good lattice as well as an AWGN-good lattice. Using the flatness factor, we show that the error probability of the propo…
It is well known that orthogonal coding can be used to approach the Shannon capacity of the power-constrained AWGN channel without a bandwidth constraint. This correspondence describes a semi-orthogonal variation of pulse position modulation that is sequential in nature -- bits can be ``streamed across'' without having to buffer up blocks of bits at the transmitter. ML decoding results in an exponentially small probability of error as a function of tolerated receiver delay and thus eventually a zero probability of error on every transmitted bit. In the high-rate regime, a matching upper bound …
This paper extends linear-complexity concatenated coding schemes to fountain communication over the discrete-time memoryless channel. Achievable fountain error exponents for one-level and multi-level concatenated fountain codes are derived. It is also shown that concatenated coding schemes possess interesting properties in several multi-user fountain communication scenarios.
A tight converse bound to channel coding rate in the finite block-length regime and under AWGN conditions was recently proposed by Polyanskiy, Poor, and Verdu (PPV). The bound is a generalization of a number of other classical results, and it was also claimed to be equivalent to Shannon's 1959 cone packing bound. Unfortunately, its numerical evaluation is troublesome even for not too large values of the block-length n. In this paper we tackle the numerical evaluation by compactly expressing the PPV converse bound in terms of non-central chi-squared distributions, and by evaluating those throug…
Two concatenated coding schemes incorporating algebraic Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes are proposed. Simulation results show that at a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$, a concatenated scheme using RS and PAC codes has more than $0.25$ dB coding gain over the NASA standard concatenation scheme, which uses RS and convolutional codes.
Concatenation is a method of building long codes out of shorter ones, it attempts to meet the problem of decoding complexity by breaking the required computation into manageable segments. Concatenated Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) facilitates powerful error correction. CPFSK also has the advantage of being bandwidth efficient and compatible with nonlinear amplifiers. Bandwidth efficient concatenated coded modulation schemes were designed for communication over Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN), and Rayleigh fading channels. An analytical bounds on the performance of serial…
This paper considers the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. For this setup, all possible side information configurations have been recently classified into eight groups and the capacity of the channel has been established for six groups (Asadi et al., ISIT 2014). We propose inner and outer bounds for the two remaining groups, groups 4 and 7. A distinguishing feature of these two groups is that the weakest receiver knows the requested message of the stron…
A concatenated coding scheme over binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels using a polarization transformation followed by outer sub-codes is analyzed. Achievable error exponents and upper bounds on the error rate are derived. The first bound is obtained using outer codes which are typical linear codes from the ensemble of parity check matrices whose elements are chosen independently and uniformly. As a byproduct of this bound, it determines the required rate split of the total rate to the rates of the outer codes. A lower bound on the error exponent that holds for all BMS channels with a gi…
In this paper we provide a detailed description of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, the most important algorithms for decoding them, and their use in concatenated coding systems for space applications. In the current literature there is scattered information regarding the bit-level implementation of such codes for either space systems or any other type of application. Consequently, we start with a general overview of the channel coding systems used in space communications and then we focus in the finest details. We first present a detailed description of the required algebra of RS codes with detailed …
We address the error floor problem of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes on the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, by constructing a serially concatenated code consisting of two systematic irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) component codes connected by an interleaver. The interleaver is designed to prevent stopping-set error events in one of the IRA codes from propagating into stopping set events of the other code. Simulations with two 128-bit rate 0.707 IRA component codes show that the proposed architecture achieves a much lower error floor at higher SNRs, compared …
We study the problem of communication over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an AWGN feedback channel. When the feedback channel is noiseless, the classic Schalkwijk-Kailath (S-K) scheme is known to achieve capacity in a simple sequential fashion, while attaining reliability superior to non-feedback schemes. In this work, we show how simplicity and reliability can be attained even when the feedback is noisy, provided that the feedback channel is sufficiently better than the feedforward channel. Specifically, we introduce a low-complexity low-delay interactive scheme that ope…
This paper investigates the capacity region of the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) may know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. We first classify all 64 possible side information configurations into eight groups, each consisting of eight members. We next construct transmission schemes, and derive new inner and outer bounds for the groups. This establishes the capacity region for 52 out of 64 possible side information configurations. For six groups (i.e., groups 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 in our te…
In this paper we provide new compact integral expressions and associated simple asymptotic approximations for converse and achievability bounds in the finite blocklength regime. The chosen converse and random coding union bounds were taken from the recent work of Polyanskyi-Poor-Verdu, and are investigated under parallel AWGN channels, the AWGN channels, the BI-AWGN channel, and the BSC. The technique we use, which is a generalization of some recent results available from the literature, is to map the probabilities of interest into a Laplace integral, and then solve (or approximate) the integr…
Physical Unclonable Functions can be used for secure key generation in cryptographic applications. It is explained how methods from coding theory must be applied in order to ensure reliable key regeneration. Based on previous work, we show ways how to obtain better results with respect to error probability and codeword length. Also, an example based on Generalized Concatenated codes is given, which improves upon used coding schemes for PUFs.
This paper presents and analyzes a novel concatenated coding scheme for enabling error resilience in two distributed storage settings: one being storage using existing regenerating codes and the second being storage using locally repairable codes. The concatenated coding scheme brings together a maximum rank distance (MRD) code as an outer code and either a globally regenerating or a locally repairable code as an inner code. Also, error resilience for combination of locally repairable codes with regenerating codes is considered. This concatenated coding system is designed to handle two differe…
We consider compressive sensing as a source coding method for signal transmission. We concatenate a convolutional coding system with 1-bit compressive sensing to obtain a serial concatenated system model for sparse signal transmission over an AWGN channel. The proposed source/channel decoder, which we refer to as turbo CS, is robust against channel noise and its signal reconstruction performance at the receiver increases considerably through iterations. We show 12 dB improvement with six turbo CS iterations compared to a non-iterative concatenated source/channel decoder.
This work proposes a tractable estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of various families of sparse-graph code ensembles, by using an approximation for the extended belief propagation generalized extrinsic information transfer (EBP-GEXIT) function, first proposed by Measson et al. We consider the transmission over non-binary complex-input additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend the existing results to obtain an expression for the GEXIT function. We estimate the MAP threshold by applying the Maxwell construction to the obtained approximate EBP-GEXIT charts for various f…
The optimal coding scheme for communicating a Gaussian message over an Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with AWGN output feedback, with a limited number of transmissions is unknown. Even if we restrict the scope of the coding scheme to linear schemes, still, deriving the optimal coding scheme is a challenging task. The state-of-the-art linear scheme for channels with noisy feedback is by Chance and Love, where the coefficients of the linear scheme are numerically optimized based on unique observations [1]. In this paper, we introduce a new class of sequential linear schemes for thi…
In this work we develop the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) algorithm for noncoherent amplitude shift keying (NCASK) systems in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The developed algorithm was used to investigate the performance of the NCASK system with convolutional coding and soft-decision Viterbi decoding. Tight and simple upper bounds have been derived to describe the system performance; simulation results have shown that the derived upper bounds are within 0.1 dB of the simulated points.
This work provides an algebraic framework for source coding with decoder side information and its dual problem, channel coding with encoder side information, showing that nested concatenated codes can achieve the corresponding rate-distortion and capacity-noise bounds. We show that code concatenation preserves the nested properties of codes and that only one of the concatenated codes needs to be nested, which opens up a wide range of possible new code combinations for these side information based problems. In particular, the practically important binary version of these problems can be address…
This study examines the use of nonsystematic channel codes to obtain secure transmissions over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) wire-tap channel. Unlike the previous approaches, we propose to implement nonsystematic coded transmission by scrambling the information bits, and characterize the bit error rate of scrambled transmissions through theoretical arguments and numerical simulations. We have focused on some examples of Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to estimate the security gap, which we have used as a measure of physical layer security, …
In this paper, we study achievable rates of concatenated coding schemes over a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) storage channel. Our channel model incorporates the main features of DNA-based data storage. First, information is stored on many, short DNA strands. Second, the strands are stored in an unordered fashion inside the storage medium and each strand is replicated many times. Third, the data is accessed in an uncontrollable manner, i.e., random strands are drawn from the medium and received, possibly with errors. As one of our results, we show that there is a significant gap between the chann…
This paper investigates the additive white Gaussian noise two-way relay channel, where two users exchange messages through a relay. Asymmetrical channels are considered where the users can transmit data at different rates and at different power levels. We modify and improve existing coding schemes to obtain three new achievable rate regions. Comparing four downlink-optimal coding schemes, we show that the scheme that gives the best sum-rate performance is (i) complete-decode-forward, when both users transmit at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); (ii) functional-decode-forward with nested lattice…
Polar codes have attracted much recent attention as the first codes with low computational complexity that provably achieve optimal rate-regions for a large class of information-theoretic problems. One significant drawback, however, is that for current constructions the probability of error decays sub-exponentially in the block-length (more detailed designs improve the probability of error at the cost of significantly increased computational complexity \cite{KorUS09}). In this work we show how the the classical idea of code concatenation -- using "short" polar codes as inner codes and a "high-…
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multi-way relay channel is considered, where multiple users exchange information through a single relay at a common rate. Existing coding strategies, i.e., complete-decode-forward and compress-forward are shown to be bounded away from the cut-set upper bound at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). It is known that the gap between the compress-forward rate and the capacity upper bound is a constant at high SNR, and that between the complete-decode-forward rate and the upper bound increases with SNR at high SNR. In this paper, a functional-decode-forward co…
This paper investigates the maximal channel coding rate achievable at a given blocklength $n$ and error probability $ε$, when the codewords are subject to a long-term (i.e., averaged-over-all-codeword) power constraint. The second-order term in the large-$n$ expansion of the maximal channel coding rate is characterized both for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and for quasi-static fading channels with perfect channel state information available at both the transmitter and the receiver. It is shown that in both cases the second-order term is proportional to $\sqrt{n^{-1}\ln n}$. Fo…
DNA Data storage has recently attracted much attention due to its durable preservation and extremely high information density (bits per gram) properties. In this work, we propose a hybrid coding strategy comprising of generalized constrained codes to tackle homopolymer (run-length) limit and a protograph based low-density parity-check (LDPC) code to correct asymmetric nucleotide level (i.e., A/T/C/G) substitution errors that may occur in the process of DNA sequencing. Two sequencing techniques namely, Nanopore sequencer and Illumina sequencer with their equivalent channel models and capacities…
Lattice coding and decoding have been shown to achieve the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. This was accomplished using a minimum mean-square error scaling and randomization to transform the AWGN channel into a modulo-lattice additive noise channel of the same capacity. It has been further shown that when operating at rates below capacity but above the critical rate of the channel, there exists a rate-dependent scaling such that the associated modulo-lattice channel attains the error exponent of the AWGN channel. A geometric explanation for this result is developed…
We describe a novel extension of subspace codes for noncoherent networks, suitable for use when the network is viewed as a communication system that introduces both dimension and symbol errors. We show that when symbol erasures occur in a significantly large number of different basis vectors transmitted through the network and when the min-cut of the networks is much smaller then the length of the transmitted codewords, the new family of codes outperforms their subspace code counterparts. For the proposed coding scheme, termed hybrid network coding, we derive two upper bounds on the size of th…
Polar lattices, which are constructed from polar codes, are provably good for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this work, we propose a new polar lattice construction that achieves the secrecy capacity under the strong secrecy criterion over the mod-$Λ$ Gaussian wiretap channel. This construction leads to an AWGN-good lattice and a secrecy-good lattice simultaneously. The design methodology is mainly based on the equivalence in terms of polarization between the $Λ/Λ'$ channel in lattice coding and the equivalent channel derived from the chain rule of mutual information in mu…
This paper investigates properties of polar codes that can be potentially useful in real-world applications. We start with analyzing the performance of finite-length polar codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC), while assuming belief propagation as the decoding method. We provide a stopping set analysis for the factor graph of polar codes, where we find the size of the minimum stopping set. We also find the girth of the graph for polar codes. Our analysis along with bit error rate (BER) simulations demonstrate that finite-length polar codes show superior error floor performance compared t…
Modulo-wrapping receivers have attracted interest in several areas of digital communications, including precoding and lattice coding. The asymptotic capacity and error performance of the modulo AWGN channel have been well established. However, due to underlying assumptions of the asymptotic analyses, these findings might not always be realistic in physical world applications, which are often dimension- or delay-limited. In this work, the optimum ways to achieve minimum probability of error for binary signaling through a scalar modulo AWGN channel is examined under different scenarios where the…
Decoding sequences that stem from multiple transmissions of a codeword over an insertion, deletion, and substitution channel is a critical component of efficient deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) data storage systems. In this paper, we consider a concatenated coding scheme with an outer nonbinary low-density parity-check code or a polar code and either an inner convolutional code or a time-varying block code. We propose two novel decoding algorithms for inference from multiple received sequences, both combining the inner code and channel to a joint hidden Markov model to infer symbolwise a posterior…
In this work, we present a concatenated repetition-polar coding scheme that is aimed at applications requiring highly unbalanced unequal bit-error protection, such as the Beam Interlock System of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Even though this concatenation scheme is simple, it reveals significant challenges that may be encountered when designing a concatenated scheme that uses a polar code as an inner code, such as error correlation and unusual decision log-likelihood ratio distributions. We explain and analyze these challenges and we propose two ways to overcome them.
In this paper, we propose a new approach to proving results regarding channel coding schemes based on construction-A lattices for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel that yields new characterizations of the code construction parameters, i.e., the primes and dimensions of the codes, as functions of the block-length. The approach we take introduces an averaging argument that explicitly involves the considered parameters. This averaging argument is applied to a generalized Loeliger ensemble to provide a more practical proof of the existence of AWGN-good lattices, and to characterize …
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multiway relay channel is investigated, where L users exchange information at the same rate through a single relay. A new achievable rate region, based on the functional-decode-forward coding strategy, is derived. For the case where there are three or more users, and all nodes transmit at the same power, the capacity is obtained. For the case where the relay power scales with the number of users, it is shown that both compress-forward and functional-decode-forward achieve rates within a constant number of bits of the capacity at all SNR levels; in addit…
Starting from Shannon's celebrated 1948 channel coding theorem, we trace the evolution of channel coding from Hamming codes to capacity-approaching codes. We focus on the contributions that have led to the most significant improvements in performance vs. complexity for practical applications, particularly on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. We discuss algebraic block codes, and why they did not prove to be the way to get to the Shannon limit. We trace the antecedents of today's capacity-approaching codes: convolutional codes, concatenated codes, and other probabilistic coding …
We develop the proposal of non-systematic channel codes on the AWGN wire-tap channel. Such coding technique, based on scrambling, achieves high transmission security with a small degradation of the eavesdropper's channel with respect to the legitimate receiver's channel. In this paper, we show that, by implementing scrambling and descrambling on blocks of concatenated frames, rather than on single frames, the channel degradation needed is further reduced. The usage of concatenated scrambling allows to achieve security also when both receivers experience the same channel quality. However, in th…
In this paper, we investigate the joint design of channel and network coding in bi-directional relaying systems and propose a combined low complexity physical network coding and LDPC decoding scheme. For the same LDPC codes employed at both source nodes, we show that the relay can decodes the network coded codewords from the superimposed signal received from the BPSK-modulated multiple-access channel. Simulation results shown that this novel joint physical network coding and LDPC decoding method outperforms the existing MMSE network coding and LDPC decoding method over AWGN and complex MAC cha…
A framework is proposed that allows for a joint description and optimization of both binary polar coding and the multilevel coding (MLC) approach for $2^m$-ary digital pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM). The conceptual equivalence of polar coding and multilevel coding is pointed out in detail. Based on a novel characterization of the channel polarization phenomenon, rules for the optimal choice of the bit labeling in this coded modulation scheme employing polar codes are developed. Simulation results for the AWGN channel are included.
In this paper we prove the separation of source-network coding and channel coding in wireline networks. For the purposes of this work, a wireline network is any network of independent, memoryless, point-to-point, finite-alphabet channels used to transmit dependent sources either losslessly or subject to a distortion constraint. In deriving this result, we also prove that in a general memoryless network with dependent sources, lossless and zero-distortion reconstruction are equivalent provided that the conditional entropy of each source given the other sources is non-zero. Furthermore, we exten…
This letter investigates the role of index coding in the capacity of AWGN broadcast channels with receiver message side information. We first show that index coding is unnecessary where there are two receivers; multiplexing coding and superposition coding are sufficient to achieve the capacity region. We next show that, for more than two receivers, multiplexing coding and superposition coding alone can be suboptimal. We give an example where these two coding schemes alone cannot achieve the capacity region, but adding index coding can. This demonstrates that, in contrast to the two-receiver ca…
A novel fountain coding scheme has been introduced. The scheme consists of a parallel concatenation of a MDS block code with a LRFC code, both constructed over the same field, $F_q$. The performance of the concatenated fountain coding scheme has been analyzed through derivation of tight bounds on the probability of decoding failure as a function of the overhead. It has been shown how the concatenated scheme performs as well as LRFC codes in channels characterized by high erasure probabilities, whereas they provide failure probabilities lower by several orders of magnitude at moderate/low erasu…

The conceptual equivalence of polar coding and multilevel coding is pointed out in detail. Based on a novel characterization of the channel polarization phenomenon, rules for the optimal choice of the labeling in coded modulation schemes employing polar codes are developed.
