We analyze the relationship between the bound and the free waves in the noncollinear SHG scheme, along with the vectorial conservation law for the different components arising when there are two pump beams impinging on the sample with two different incidence angles. The generated power is systematically investigated, by varying the polarization state of both fundamental beams, while absorption is included via the Herman and Hayden correction terms. The theoretical simulations, obtained for samples which are some coherence length thick show that the resulting polarization mapping is an useful tool to put in evidence the interference between bound and free waves, as well as the effect of absorption on the interference pattern
We outline an approach for improving the temporal contrast of a high-intensity laser system by $>$8 orders of magnitude using non-collinear sum-frequency generation with the signal and idler of an optical parametric amplifier. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by cleaning pulses from a millijoule-level chirped-pulse amplification system to provide $>$10$^{12}$ intensity contrast relative to all pre-pulses and amplified spontaneous emission $>$5~ps prior to the main pulse. The output maintains percent-level energy stability on the time scales of a typical user experiment at our…
In chiral sum frequency generation (C-SFG), the chiral nature of $χ^{(2)}$ requires the three involved electric fields to be pairwise non-parallel, leading to the traditional non-collinear configuration which is a hindrance for achieving diffraction limited resolution while utilizing it as a label-free imaging contrast mechanism . Here we propose a collinear C-SFG (CC-SFG) microscopy modality by using longitudinal z-polarized vectorial field. Label-free chiral imaging with enhanced spatial resolution (~1.4 times improvement in one lateral and the longitudinal directions over the traditional no…
We study theoretically and experimentally High Harmonic Generation (HHG) using two non collinear driving fields focused in gases. We show that these two fields form a non stationary blazed active grating in the generation medium. The intensity and phase structure of this grating rule the far field properties of the emission, such as the relative amplitude of the diffraction orders. Full macroscopic calculations and experiments support this general analysis. This insight into the HHG process allows us to envision new structuration schemes to convert femtosecond lasers to attosecond pulses with …
We generate high-order harmonics in gaseous medium with tunable photon energy using time domain interferometry of double pulses in a non-collinear generation geometry. The method is based on the fact that the generated harmonics inherit certain spectral properties of the driving laser. The two temporally delayed ultrashort laser pulses, identical in all parameters, are produced by a custom-made split-and-delay unit utilizing wave front splitting without a significant energy loss. The arrangement is easy to implement in any attosecond pulse generation beamline, and is suitable for the productio…
Because of the importance of second harmonic generation in some nonlinear media, in this paper, we investigated induced second harmonic generation in diamond where there is no intrinsic second order susceptibility, X(2). The electric field is proposed to introduce moving susceptibility of the second order and induce second harmonic generation. Then, spatiotemporal (QPM) is applied to optimize the induced second harmonic generation. Numerical results reveals that in this way, the induced second harmonic is found at the frequency of omega (2) = 2 omega(0) + or - Delta omega rather than omega (0)…
We study cascaded harmonic generation of hybrid surface plasmons in integrated planar waveguides composed of a graphene layer and a doped-semiconductor slab. We derive a comprehensive model of cascaded third harmonic generation through phase-matched nonlinear interaction of fundamental, second harmonic and third harmonic plasmonic modes supported by the structure. We show that hybrid graphene-semiconductor waveguides can simultaneously phase-match these three interacting harmonics, increasing the total third-harmonic output by a factor of 5 compared to the non-cascaded regime.
Integrated, monolithic nonlinear cavities are of high interest in both classical and quantum optics experiments for their high efficiency and stability. However, a general, analytic theory of classical three wave mixing in such systems that encompasses multiple monolithic designs, including both linear and nonlinear regions, as well as any three-wave mixing process has not yet been fully developed. In this paper, we present the analytic theory for a general, classical three wave mixing process in a cavity with arbitrary finesse and non-zero propagation losses, encompassing second harmonic, sum…
Third-harmonic generation can be realized via both $χ^{(3)}$ and cascaded $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear processes in a triply-resonant microcavity. It is still unknown how these processes interfere with each other and the optimization of the conversion efficiency still remains as a question. In this work, the interplay between the direct third-harmonic generation and the cascaded process combining of the second-harmonic generation and the sum-frequency generation are investigated. It is found that the interference effect between these two processes can be used to improve the conversion efficiency. By op…
In this paper, we investigate the role of the current loop in the generation of second and third harmonic signals from magnetic metamaterials. We will show that the fact that the current loop in the magnetic resonance acts as a source for nonlinear effects and it consists of two orthogonal parts, leads to the generation of two harmonic signals in two orthogonal polarizations.
In this work, we study second-harmonic generation a monocrystalline nanoparticle with a non-centrosymmetric crystalline lattice. It was shown that breaking the symmetry of the nanoparticle's shape can significantly affect the second harmonic radiation pattern. We propose a method for explaining and predicting the generated field for arbitrary nanoparticles and provide selection rules for nanoparticles with several different symmetries.
We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of second and third harmonic signals from a telecom wavelength pump in a gallium phosphide (GaP) microdisk. Using analysis of the power scaling of both the second and third harmonic outputs and calculations of nonlinear cavity mode coupling factors, we study contributions to the third harmonic signal from direct and cascaded sum frequency generation processes. We find that despite the relatively high material absorption in gallium phosphide at the third harmonic wavelength, both of these processes can be significant, with relative magnitudes that depe…
Organic semiconductors have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent optical and electronic properties. Here, we present an experimental and theoretical study of Brunel harmonic generation in two types of porphyrin thin films: tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and its organometallic complex derivative Zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP). Our results show that the $π$-$π^\ast$ excitation of the porphyrin ringsystem plays a major role in the harmonic generation process. We uncovered the contribution of an interband process to Brunel harmonic generation. In particular, the resonant ($S_0 \righ…
The high harmonic generation in periodically corrugated submicrometer waveguides is studied numerically. Plasmonic field enhancement in the vicinity of the corrugations allows to use low pump intensities. Simultaneously, periodic placement of the corrugations leads to quasi-phase-matching and corresponding increase of the high harmonic efficiency. The optimization of waveguide geometry is performed, and the resulting spectra are analyzed by the means of (1+1)D numerical model.
The first high harmonic spectrum, containing only the odd orders, was observed in experiments 30 years ago (1987). However, a spectrum containing pure even harmonics has never been observed. We investigate the generation of pure even harmonics from oriented CO molecules in linearly polarized laser fields employing the time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that the even harmonics, with no odd orders, are generated with the polarization perpendicular to the laser polarization, when the molecular axis of CO is perpendicular to the laser polarization. Generation of pure even harmonics …
We establish how the intensities of the higher harmonics that arise when a photoelectron recombines with a parent ion depend functionally on the parameters of the laser wave and atomic medium, and estimate the limiting values of these parameters that are needed to observe the phase synchronization effect.
Type II second-harmonic generation was performed in a 15.8-mm-long KTiOPO4 micrometric ridge waveguide with an average transversal section of 38 micrometer^2. Theoretical predictions are compared with experiments. Strong agreements are obtained for both phase-matching wavelengths and second-harmonic intensity. This work opens wide perspectives for integrated parametric optics.
High harmonic generation in solids is becoming an important method for strong field solid state physics research. The power scale relationship between high harmonics and the driving laser is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Results of the power scale dependence clearly divided the interaction into two regimes. The modification of the bandgap by intense laser proved to be very important for theoretically reproducing the experimental result. Combining with the Keldysh theory analysis, the harmonic generation process is found to be transitioned from multiphoton excitations to t…
We demonstrate second harmonic generation of blue light on an integrated thin-film lithium niobate waveguide and observe a conversion efficiency of $η_0= 33000\%/\text{W-cm}^2$, significantly exceeding previous demonstrations.
We report generation of high harmonics in a gas-jet pumped by pulses self-compressed in a He-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber through the soliton effect. The gas-jet is placed directly at the fiber output. As the energy increases the ionization-induced soliton blue-shift is transferred to the high harmonics, leading to a emission bands that are continuously tunable from 17 to 45 eV.
We show that second harmonic generation can be enhanced by Fano resonant coupling of asymmetric plasmonic metal nanostructures. We develop a theoretical model examining the effects of electromagnetic interaction between two metal nanostructures on the second harmonic generation. We compare the second harmonic generation efficiency of a single plasmonic metal nanostructure with that of two coupled ones. We show that second harmonic generation from a single metal nanostructure can be enhanced about 30 times by attaching a second metal nanostructure with a 10 times higher quality factor than that…
Second and third harmonic signals have been usually generated by using nonlinear crystals, but that method suffers from the low efficiency in small thicknesses. Metamaterials can be used to generate harmonic signals in small thicknesses. Here, we introduce a new method for amplifying second and third harmonic generation from magnetic metamaterials. We show that by using a grating structure under the metamaterial, the grating and the metamaterial form a resonator, and amplify the resonant behavior of the metamaterial. Therefore, we can generate second and third harmonic signals with high effici…
We present a theoretical study of second-harmonic generation from a singular metasurface. The singular metasurfaces strongly interact with the incident light, where the large field enhancement forms an intense surface polarization that generates the second-harmonic field. By using transformation optics, the calculation of nonlinear optical response is converted from the metasurface frame to that of a simple slab geometry, largely reducing the complexity of the problem. In addition, the singular metasurface exhibits a weak dependence on the incident angle of light, which can be potentially used…
We report a theoretical investigation of quadratic frequency combs in a dispersive second-harmonic generation cavity system. We identify different dynamical regimes and demonstrate that the same system can exhibit both bright and dark localized cavity solitons in the absence of a temporal walk-off.
We model second harmonic generation in subwavelength III-V-on-insulator waveguides. The large index contrast induces strong longitudinal electric field components that play an important role in the nonlinear conversion. We show that many different waveguide dimensions are suitable for efficient conversion of a fundamental quasi-TE pump mode around the 1550 nm telecommunication wavelength to a higher-order second harmonic mode.
A simple and flexible technique for achieving quasi-phase-matching in integrated photonic waveguides without periodic poling is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, referred to as mode-shape-modulation (MSM). It employs a periodic variation of waveguide width to modulate the intensity of the pump wave, effectively suppressing out-of-phase light generation. This technique is applied to the case of second-harmonic generation in thin-film lithium niobate ridge waveguides. MSM waveguides are fabricated and characterized with pulsed-pumping in the near-infrared, showing harmonic generation at …
We report the first observation of nonlinear harmonic generation and sum frequency generation (SFG) coupled with stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) via the second-order (χ^{(2)}) and the third-order (χ^{(3)}) nonlinearities in a silica microbottle resonator. The visible light emission due to third harmonic generation (THG) was observed in both the output of a tapered fiber and the optical microscope images, which can be used to identify the axial mode profiles. SFG enabled by three- and four-wave mixing processes between the pump light and the light generated via SRS was also observed. Second H…
We present a theoretical study of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and propagation driven by an infrared field carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). Our calculations unveil the following relevant phenomena: extreme-ultraviolet harmonic vortices are generated and survive to the propagation effects, vortices transport high-OAM multiple of the corresponding OAM of the driving field and, finally, the different harmonic vortices are emitted with similar divergence. We also show the possibility of combining OAM and HHG phase-locking to produce attosecond pulses with helical pulse structure.
The strong ellipticity dependence of high-harmonic generation in gases enables numerous experimental techniques that are nowadays routinely used, for instance, to create isolated attosecond pulses. Extending such techniques to high-harmonic generation in solids requires a fundamental understanding of the microscopic mechanism of the high-harmonic generation. Here, using extensive first-principles simulations within a time-dependent density-functional framework, we show how intraband and interband mechanisms are strongly and differently affected by the ellipticity of the driving laser field. Th…
We derive a time-domain mean-field equation to model the full temporal and spectral dynamics of light in singly resonant cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation systems. We show that the temporal walk-off between the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields plays a decisive role under realistic conditions, giving rise to rich, previously unidentified nonlinear behaviour. Through linear stability analysis and numerical simulations, we discover a new kind of quadratic modulation instability which leads to the formation of optical frequency combs and associated time-domain dissipative struct…
Comparative analysis of second harmonic generation in ordinary and backward-wave settings is presented. Extraordinary properties of frequency doubling nonlinear optical reflectivity and pulse shaping through phase matching of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in the nanowaveguides with mixed negative/positive spatial dispersion is demonstrated with numerical simulations.
We employ structured light for the second-harmonic generation from subwavelength AlGaAs nanoparticles that support both electric and magnetic multipolar Mie resonances. The vectorial structure of the pump beam allows addressing selectively Mie-resonant modes and control the strength of the generated nonlinear fields. We observe experimentally the enhancement of the second-harmonic generation for the azimuthally polarized vector beams near magnetic dipole resonance, and match our observations with the numerical decomposion of the Mie-type multipoles for the fundamental and generated second-harm…
High-harmonic generation by a highly non-linear interaction of infrared laser fields with matter allows for the generation of attosecond pulses in the XUV spectral regime. This process, well established for atoms, has been recently extended to the condensed phase. Remarkably well pronounced harmonics up to order ~30 have been observed for dielectrics. We present the first ab-initio multi-scale simulation of solid-state high-harmonic generation. We find that mesoscopic effects of the extended system, in particular the realistic sampling of the entire Brillouin zone, the pulse propagation in the…
