A new strategy to select candidate blazars for VHE observations, that gives an inherently complete sample from an all-sky compilation (excluding a narrow region around the galactic plane) of GeV-bright blazars is presented.
The strategy is based on selecting candidate VHE blazars from a GeV-detected blazar sample, namely the LAT-bright-AGN-sample (LBAS) of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). The intrinsic spectra in the VHE regime is estimated based on the extrapolation of the GeV spectra measured with FGST. This is corrected for the unavoidable extinction due to the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) in the UV to mid-IR. The resulting observable spectra ranked by the integrated flux is used to extract candidates for observations in the VHE regime with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The predictions are cross-checked using the sample of known VHE blazars.
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes is used in an intensive observation program focused on the discovery of VHE (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray-emitting blazars. Since VERITAS began full-scale operation in 2007, more than 1000 hours of observation, on ~90 targets, have been devoted to the VHE blazar discovery effort and to timely follow-up in multi-wavelength (MWL) observation campaigns. These data have resulted in the discovery of VHE emission from 10 blazars (6 HBLs and 4 IBLs). A summary of these VHE discoveries is presented.
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are known to show significant variability over a wide frequency range. We review observational results on the variability characteristics of blazars in the very high energy (VHE) domain, focusing on recent findings of rapid VHE variability and evidence for an underlying multiplicative driving process in PKS 2155-304. We explore a physical scenario where the variability is assumed to arise due to accretion disk fluctuations transmitted to the jet, and discuss its implications for the central powerhouse.
Our goal is to limit the redshifts of three blazars PG 1553+113, 3C 66A and PKS 1424+240, through the investigation of their Fermi and VHE (very high energy) $γ$-ray observations. We assume that the intrinsic spectra of PG 1553+113, 3C 66A, and PKS 1424+240 have not any cutoff across the Fermi and VHE $γ$-ray energy ranges. The intrinsic spectra of VHE $γ$-rays are obtained through the extrapolation of Fermi spectra. Comparing the measured and intrinsic VHE spectra due to extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption, we give the redshift upper limits of three blazars assuming a specific EBL…
The VERITAS array of four 12-m diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona is used to study very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from astrophysical objects. VERITAS is currently the most sensitive VHE gamma-ray observatory in the world and one of the VERITAS collaboration's Key Science Projects (KSP) is the study of blazars. These active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the most numerous class of identified VHE sources, with ~30 known to emit VHE photons. More than 70 AGN, almost all of which are blazars, have been observed with the VERITAS array since 2007, …
We present long-term observations of several VHE (E > 100 GeV) blazars with VERITAS, together with contemporaneous Swift and RXTE X-ray data. The observed targets include Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 2344+514. Strong flux and spectral variability is seen in Mrk 421 on nightly time-scales between January and June 2008, revealing a highly correlated X-ray to GeV/TeV connection. Modest X-ray variability is evident in Mrk 501. Observations of 1ES 2344+514 in December 2007 show VHE gamma-ray and X-ray flux doubling on nightly time-scales.
MAGIC has been performing optically triggered Target of Opportunity observations of flaring blazars since the beginning of its scientific operations. The alerts of flaring blazars originate from Tuorla Blazar Monitoring Programme, which started the optical monitoring of candidtate TeV blazars in 2002 and has now collected up to eight years of data on more than 60 blazars. These ToO observations have resulted in the discovery of five new VHE gamma-ray emitting blazars (S5 0716+714, 1ES 1011+496, Mrk 180, ON 325 and B3 2247+381). In addition part of the discovery of BL Lac and the discovery of 3…
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona began full-scale operations in 2007, and it is one of the world's most sensitive detectors of astrophysical VHE (E > 100 GeV) gamma rays. Forty-one blazars are known to emit VHE photons, and observations of blazars are one of the VERITAS Collaboration's Key Science Projects (KSPs). More than 400 hours per year are devoted to this program, and ~100 blazars have already been observed with the array, in most cases with the deepest-ever VHE exposure. These observations have resulted in 20 detections, including 10 new VH…
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona began full-scale operations in 2007, and is one of the world's most-sensitive detectors of astrophysical VHE (E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Approximately 50 blazars are known to emit VHE photons, and observations of blazars are a major focus of the VERITAS Collaboration. Nearly 2000 hours have been devoted to this program and ~130 blazars have already been observed with the array, in most cases with the deepest-ever VHE exposure. These observations have resulted in 21 detections, including 10 VHE discoveries. Recent highli…
Recent blazar detections by HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS suggest that very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays may be produced in most, if not all, types of blazars, including those that possess intense circumnuclear radiation fields. In this paper, we investigate the interaction of nuclear VHE gamma-rays with the circumnuclear radiation fields through gamma-gamma absorption and pair production, and the subsequent Compton-supported pair cascades. We have developed a Monte-Carlo code to follow the spatial development of the cascade in full 3-dimensional geometry, and calculate the radiative o…
The high energy peaked BL Lac (HBL) object 1ES 0414+009 (z=0.287) is a distant very high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) blazars with well-determined redshift. This source was detected with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) between October 2005 and September 2009. It was also detected with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in 21 months of data. The combined high energy (HE) and VHE spectra, once corrected for gamma-gamma absorption on the extragalactic background light (EBL), indicate a Compton peak located above few TeV, among the highest in the BL Lac class.
Several models have been suggested to explain the fast gamma-ray variability observed in blazars, but its origin is still debated. One scenario is magnetic reconnection, a process that can efficiently convert magnetic energy to energy of relativistic particles accelerated in the reconnection layer. In our study, we compare results from state-of-the-art particle-in-cell simulations with observations of blazars at Very High Energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays. Our goal is to test our model predictions on fast gamma-ray variability with data and to constrain the parameter space of the model, suc…
Most of the recent research on extragalactic $γ$-ray propagation focused on the study of the $γγ\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ absorption process ("absorption-only model"). Starting from a possible anomaly at very high energies (VHE, E >100 GeV), we briefly review several existing deviations from this model. The exotic interpretation of the VHE anomaly is not supported by the recent works. On the other hand, the process of intergalactic electromagnetic cascade development naturally explains these effects. We discuss phenomenology of intergalactic cascades and the main spectral signatures of the elect…
Fermi-LAT spectra at high energies (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) are often extrapolated to very high energies (VHE, >100 GeV) and considered either a good estimate or an upper limit for the blazars intrinsic VHE spectrum. This assumption seems not well justified, neither theoretically nor observationally. Besides being often softer, observations do indicate that spectra at VHE could be also harder than at HE, even when adopting the limit of Gamma=1.5. Results based on such straightforward GeV-TeV extrapolations are in general not reliable, and should be considered with caution.
Very high energy (VHE) $γ$-rays above 10$'$s of GeV energy, emitted from distant blazars, are attenuated by photons from the extragalactic background light (EBL). Unfortunately, neither the EBL nor the intrinsic blazar spectrum is accurately known to derive one quantity from the other. In this work we use a homogeneous one zone model involving synchrotron, synchrotron self Compton (SSC) and external Compton (EC) emission mechanisms to estimate the intrinsic VHE spectra of blazars. The model is applied on three VHE blazars, namely PKS2155-304, RGB J0710+591 and 3C279, for which simultaneous mul…
The VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes was used to observe ~130 blazars from 2007 to 2012. Of these, 25 were detected as very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) sources. We present here the results of the analysis of 65 VERITAS non-detected blazars, including upper limits on their VHE flux. Results from a stacked analysis of the entire data set and of smaller sub-sets (defined as a function of the redshift and the blazar class) are presented and discussed.
We present the redshift lower limit of z>0.6035 for the very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) emitting blazar PKS 1424+240 (PG 1424+240). This limit is inferred from Lyman beta and gamma absorption observed in the far-ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. No VHE-detected blazar has shown solid spectroscopic evidence of being more distant. At this distance, VHE observations by VERITAS are shown to sample historically large gamma-ray opacity values at 500 GeV, extending beyond tau=4 for low-level models of the extragalactic background light (EBL) and beyond…
The very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray spectral indices of blazars show strong correlation with the source redshift. Absence of any such correlation in low energy gamma rays and X-rays indicate the presence of Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) induced absorption of VHE gamma rays. By employing a linear regression analysis, this observational feature of blazars is used to constrain the redshift of BL Lac objects which was unknown/uncertain earlier. Additionally, we also compare the observed VHE spectral index-redshift correlation with the ones predicted from commonly adopted EBL models. Our st…
AGNs are believed to be the source of very energetic cosmic rays which, in turn, produce gamma rays throughout the interactions with matter. Therefore, the study of their very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray spectra is fundamental to understand the cosmic-ray acceleration mechanisms in these objects. Blazars are the most common type of AGNs populating gamma-ray catalogs, among these sources BL-Lacs present featureless or very weak emission/absorption lines spectra. Given that the extragalactic VHE gamma-ray catalog is poorly populated (about 70 blazars), having a redshift estimation of every singl…
Aims. High Synchrotron Peaked blazars (HSPs) dominate the -ray sky at energies larger than a few GeV; however, only a few hundred blazars of this type have been catalogued so far. In this paper we present the 2WHSP sample, the largest and most complete list of HSP blazars available to date, which is an expansion of the 1WHSP catalog of gamma-ray source candidates off the Galactic plane. Methods. We cross-matched a number of multi-wavelength surveys (in the radio, infrared and X-ray bands) and applied selection criteria based on the radio to IR and IR to X-ray spectral slopes. To ensure the sel…
The prospects for future blazar surveys by next-generation very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray telescopes, such as Advanced Gamma-ray Imaging System (AGIS) and Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), are investigated using the latest model of blazar luminosity function and its evolution which is in good agreement with the flux and redshift distribution of observed blazars as well as the extragalactic gamma-ray background. We extend and improve the template of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) based on the blazar SED sequence paradigm, to make it reliable also in the VHE bands (above 100 GeV) by compa…
Context: The $γ$-ray blazar PKS 2155-304 has attracted considerable attention because of its extreme TeV variability characteristics during an exceptional flaring period in 2006. Among the observed key findings are (i) a minimum variability timescale as short as $\sim 200$ sec and (ii) highly variable TeV emission, which in the frequency interval [$10^{-4}$ Hz, $10^{-2}$ Hz] can be described by a log-normal distribution and suggests an underlying multiplicative (and not additive) process. Aims: Simultaneously accounting for these findings appears difficult within conventional approaches. Follo…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory recently began full-scale operations, surveying 2/3 of the entire sky at very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV). This new view of the sky offers the opportunity to detect flares from blazars, facilitating studies of the mechanisms powering their central engines and providing an avenue to constrain the properties of particles and fields in intergalactic space. The HAWC Collaboration has implemented an online flare monitor to search for rapid and extreme transient activity from a set of blazars either known or suspected to produce VHE emission. T…
We present an analysis of the intrinsic (unattenuated by the extragalactic background light, EBL) power-law spectral indices of 128 extragalactic sources detected up to z~2 with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) at very high energies (VHEs, E>50 GeV). The median of the intrinsic index distribution is 2.20 (versus 2.54 for the observed distribution). We also analyze the observed spectral breaks (i.e., the difference between the VHE and high energy, HE, 100 MeV<E<300 GeV, spectral indices). The LAT has now provided a large sample of sources detected both at VHE and HE with comparable exposure…
We present results of observations in the UV to near-IR range for eight blazars, three of which have been recently discovered at Very High Energies (VHE) and five appearing as interesting candidates for VHE γ-ray detection. We focus in this paper on the search for their redshifts, which are unknown or considered as uncertain.
A detailed multi-epoch study of the broadband spectral behaviour of the very high energy (VHE) source, 1ES\,1011+496, provides us with valuable information regarding the underlying particle distribution. Simultaneous observations of the source at optical/ UV/ X-ray/ $γ$-ray during three different epochs, as obtained from Swift-UVOT/ Swift-XRT/ Fermi-LAT, are supplemented with the information available from the VHE telescope array, HAGAR. The longterm flux variability at the Fermi-LAT energies is clearly found to be lognormal. It is seen that the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of …
The oscillation of photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) in the astrophysical magnetic fields could modify the measured very high energy (VHE; $\mathcal{E}\gtrsim 100\, \rm GeV$) $γ$-ray spectra of the blazar sources. In this paper, we use the VHE $γ$-ray observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) measured by MAGIC and Fermi-LAT in 2017 with four phases to constrain the ALP. We give the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these phases under the null and ALP hypotheses. We also test the effects of the $γ$-ray blazar intrinsic spectra models on the ALP constraints. No significant r…

High synchrotron peaked blazars (HSPs or HBLs) play a central role in very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, and likely in neutrino astronomy. Currently, the largest compilation of HSP blazars, the 2WHSP sample, includes 1691 sources, but it is not complete neither in the radio nor in the X-ray band. In order to provide a more sizable and more accurate set of HSP blazars that is useful for future statistical studies and to plan for VHE/TeV observations, we present the largest sample of extreme and high synchrotron peaked (EHSP;HSP) blazars and blazar candidates: the 3HSP catalogue. The 3H…
Intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects (IBLs) are a class of blazars characterized by a spectral energy distribution (SED) with a lower-energy synchrotron peak than the majority of extragalactic sources detected by ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Consequently, the peak gamma-ray flux falls outside the very-high-energy regime (VHE, >100 GeV) covered by IACTs such as VERITAS, making IBLs difficult to detect except during infrequent episodes of elevated flux. However, the study of these sources in a low-flux state is essential for developing a complete un…
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detection of two very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray photons from the directional vicinity of the distant (redshift, z = 1.1) blazar PKS 0426-380. The null hypothesis that both the 134 and 122 GeV photons originate from unrelated sources can be rejected at the 5.5 sigma confidence level. We therefore claim that at least one of the two VHE photons is securely associated with the blazar, making PKS 0426-380 the most distant VHE emitter known to date. The results are in agreement with the most recent Fermi-LAT constraints on the Extragalactic…
The very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) sky is dominated by blazars, radio-loud active galactic nuclei whose relativistic jet is closely aligned with the line of sight. Blazars are characterized by rapid variability at all wavelengths and thus an important part of the H.E.S.S. blazar program is devoted to target of opportunity (ToO) observations. H.E.S.S. triggers blazar ToOs on the basis of publicly available blazar observations at longer wavelengths (optical, X-rays, and $γ$-rays), from private optical observations with the ATOM telescope, and from private communications by $γ$-ray partners …

PKS 2155-304 is a blazar located in the Southern Hemisphere, monitored with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) at very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) $γ$ rays every year since 2002. Thanks to the large data set collected in the VHE range and simultaneous coverage in optical, ultraviolet (UV), X-ray and high energy $γ$-ray ranges, this object is an excellent laboratory to study spectral and temporal variability in blazars. However, despite many years of dense monitoring, the nature of the variability observed in PKS 2155-304 remains puzzling. In this paper, we discuss the complex spec…
Recently, a new method to constrain the distances of blazars with unknown redshift using combined observations in the GeV and TeV regimes has been developed. The underlying assumption is that the Very High Energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) spectrum corrected for the absorption of TeV photons by the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) via photon-photon interaction should still be softer than the gamma-ray spectrum observed by Fermi/LAT. The constraints found are related to the real redshifts by a simple linear relation, that has been used to infer the unknown or uncertain distance of blazars. The samp…
1ES 1218+304 is a moderate-redshift (z = 0.182) high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object (HBL). Detected by both the MAGIC and VERITAS gamma-ray observatories, 1ES 1218+304 is frequently monitored by VERITAS as part of its long-term blazar monitoring program. On the 3rd of January 2019, during a regularly scheduled blazar snapshot, VERITAS observed 1ES 1218+304 to have an elevated VHE flux state which continued through January 5 (ATEL #12360). In addition to VERITAS observations, MAGIC also detected elevated VHE emission (ATEL #12354) and Swift-BAT/XRT and Tuorla observations, in X-ray and optical …
With the installation of a new 28-m diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope in the middle of the array, the H.E.S.S. instrument has entered since 2012 into its Phase II. The fifth large-size telescope is particularly important to lower the threshold energy of the array, and is thus a unique instrument to observe low-frequency-peaked blazars, such as flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs), which remain rare in the very-high- energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) $γ$-ray domain. In this contribution, we report on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. telescopes of VHE $γ$-ray emission from the FSRQ PKS 07…
Astrophysical sources of very high energy (VHE; $>100$ GeV) $γ$ rays are rare, since GeV and TeV photons can be only emitted in extreme circumstances involving interactions of relativistic particles with local radiation and magnetic fields. In the context of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), only a few sources are known to be VHE emitters, where the largest fraction belongs to the rarest class of active galactic nuclei: the blazars. In this work, we explore Fermi-LAT data for energies $>100$ GeV and Galactic latitudes $b > |50^{\circ}|$ in order to probe the origin of the extragalactic iso…
Misaligned blazars have been the subject of some of the most successful radio and gamma-ray multiwavelength campaigns. These campaigns have included many of the major ground and space based gamma-ray telescopes and span decades of energy. Even though misaligned blazars account for only a small number of the total AGN detected at VHE, they provide a unique view on the AGN population. By viewing blazars at larger angles to our line of sight, they become a unique laboratory for the study of AGN jet substructure and the morphology of non-thermal emission processes. This contribution will discuss o…
The growing number of extragalactic high-energy (HE, E > 100 MeV) and very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray sources that do not belong to the blazar class suggests that VHE gamma-ray production may be a common property of most radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In a previous paper, we have investigated the signatures of Compton-supported pair cascades initiated by VHE gamma-ray absorption in monochromatic radiation fields, dominated by Ly-alpha line emission from the Broad Line Region. In this paper, we investigate the interaction of nuclear VHE gamma-rays with the thermal infrar…
Blazars are the dominant type of extragalactic sources at microwave and at $γ$-ray energies. In the most energetic part of the electromagnetic spectrum (E>100GeV) a large fraction of high Galactic latitude sources are blazars of the High Synchrotron Peaked (HSP) type, that is BL Lac objects with synchrotron power peaking in the UV or in the X-ray band. HSP blazars are remarkably rare, with only a few hundreds of them expected to be above the sensitivity limits of currently available surveys. To find these very uncommon objects, we have devised a method that combines ALLWISE survey data with mu…
This thesis presents the study of four aspects of high energy astronomy. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to an aspect of instrument development for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, namely the Level 2 trigger system of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). I am providing the motivation and principle of the operation of the Level 2 trigger, I am describing hardware implementation of the system and then I am evaluating expected performances. The second part of my thesis deals with the data analysis and modeling of broad-band emission of particular blazar PKS 1510-089.…
Extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (EHBLs) are blazars whose synchrotron emission peaks at exceptionally high energies, above few keV, in the hard X-ray regime. So far, only a handful of those objects has been detected at very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Very remarkably, VHE observations of some of these blazars (like 1ES 0229+200) have provided evidence of a VHE gamma-ray emission extending to several TeV, which is difficult to explain with standard, one-zone synchrotron self-Compton models usually applied to BL Lac objects. Th…
The search for detection of gamma-rays from distant AGNs by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) is challenging at high redshifts, not only because of lower flux due to the distance of the source, but also due to the consequent absorption of gamma-rays by the extragalactic background light (EBL). Before the MAGIC discoveries reported in this work, the farthest source ever detected in the VHE domain was the blazar PKS 1424+240, at z>0.6. MAGIC, a system of two 17 m of diameter IACTs located in the Canary island of La Palma, has been able to go beyond that limit and push the boundari…

The very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) extragalactic sky is dominated by blazars, a class of active galactic nuclei which show rapid variability at all wavelengths. Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations triggered by flaring activity detected at longer wavelengths are, thus, an important part of the blazar observing strategy of H.E.S.S., an array of five imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes sensitive to VHE photons. In this contribution we detail the H.E.S.S. extragalactic ToO program, describing the specific procedures currently in place to follow up on multi-wavelength alerts. The progr…
The MAGIC telescopes discovered very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission coming from the distant Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1222+21 (4C +21.35, z=0.432). It is the second most distant VHE gamma-ray source, with well measured redshift, detected until now. The observation was performed on 2010 June 17 (MJD 55364.9) using the two 17 m diameter imaging Cherenkov telescopes on La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). The MAGIC detection coincides with high energy MeV/GeV gamma-ray activity measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi satellite. The averaged integral…
Recent data from the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope have revealed about a dozen distant hard-spectrum blazars that have very-high-energy (VHE; $\gtrsim 100$ GeV) photons associated with them, but most of them have not yet been detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Most of these high-energy gamma-ray spectra, like those of other extreme high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects, can be well explained either by gamma rays emitted at the source or by cascades induced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, as we show specifically for KUV 00311$-$1938. We consider the prospects for detecti…
The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is the integrated light from all the stars that have ever formed, and spans the IR-UV range. The interaction of very-high-energy (VHE: E>100 GeV) gamma-rays, emitted by sources located at cosmological distances, with the intervening EBL results in electron-positron pair production that leads to energy-dependent attenuation of the observed VHE flux. This introduces a fundamental ambiguity in the interpretation of the measured VHE blazar spectra: neither the intrinsic spectra, nor the EBL, are separately known - only their combination is. In this paper we…
We have searched for very high energy (VHE) gamma rays from four blazars using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. We report the results of the observations of H 2356-309, PKS 2155-304, PKS 0537-441, and 3C 279, performed from 2005 to 2009, applying a new analysis to suppress the effects of the position dependence of Cherenkov images in the field of view. No significant VHE gamma ray emission was detected from any of the four blazars. The GeV gamma-ray spectra of these objects were obtained by analyzing Fermi/LAT archival data. Non-simultaneous wide range (radio to VHE ga…
The VERITAS array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes has collected nearly 6000 hours of observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). It has detected 39 very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) AGNs at redshifts up to z = 0.9, of which 24 are classified as high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs). VERITAS has obtained an extensive dataset of HBL, including extreme HBL (xHBL), observations, with lightcurves spanning up to 11 years, allowing the characterization of their long-term and short-term variability. A study of various xHBLs/HBLs in the VERITAS dataset is presented, and the cor…
