A new effort to explore the diffractive regime in polarized $p+p$ collisions in a broad high energy range ($\sqrt{s}$ = 200 - 500 GeV) has been initiated with the STAR detector at RHIC. Staged implementation of multiple Roman Pot stations for tagging the forward proton in the diffractive processes will enable searches for the centrally produced for the possible gluon bound state via double Pomeron exchange process and the theoretically expected Odderon state in QCD by studying spin-dependent elastic scattering in a wide $t$-range with polarized $p+p$.
The first result of the pp2pp experiment at RHIC on elastic scattering of polarized protons at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV is reported here. The exponential slope parameter b of the diffractive peak of the elastic cross section in the t range 0.010 <= |t| <= 0.019 (GeV/c)^2 was measured to be b = 16.3 +- 1.6 (stat.) +- 0.9 (syst.) (GeV/c)^{-2} .
We report the energy and centrality dependence of dynamical kurtosis for Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV at RHIC. The dynamical kurtosis of net-proton is compared to that of total-proton. The results are also compared with AMPT model calculations.
We present the inclusive and identified particle (pion, proton and their antiparticle) production in Single Diffraction Dissociation and Central Diffraction processes with the STAR detector at RHIC. The forward-scattered proton(s) are tagged in the STAR Roman Pot system while the charged particle tracks are reconstructed in the STAR Time Projection Chamber. Ionization energy loss and time of flight of charged particles are used for particle identification. In addition, the proton-antiproton production asymmetry as a function of rapidity is measured and used to study the baryon number transfer …
We describe a physics program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with tagged forward protons. The program started with the proton-proton elastic scattering experiment (PP2PP), for which a set of Roman Pot stations was build. The PP2PP experiment took data at RHIC as a dedicated experiment at the beginning of RHIC operations. To expand the physics program to include non-elastic channels with forward protons, like Central Exclusive Production (CEP), Central Production (CP) and Single Diffraction Dissociation (SD), the experiment with its equipment was merged with the STAR experiment a…
We describe different physics topics which can be performed at the LHC using tagged intact protons, namely a better understanding of the Pomeron structure in terms of quarks and gluons, and the serach for quartic anomalous couplings.
We report on the first measurement of the single spin analyzing power (A_N) at sqrt(s)=200GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Data points were measured in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01 < |t| < 0.03 (GeV/c)^2. Our result, averaged over the whole t-interval is about one standard deviation above the calculation, which uses interference between electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude and hadronic non-flip amplitude, the source of A_N. The difference could be explained by an additional contribution of a hadronic spi…
Polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provide unique opportunities to study the spin structure of the nucleon. We will highlight recent results on the nucleon spin structure from the STAR and PHENIX experiments at RHIC: (1) A sizable gluon polarization in the proton is measured with longitudinal double spin asymmetries of jet and hadron production; (2) Longitudinal single spin asymmetries in W boson production improve constraints on the sea quark polarization. The new spin asymmetry results for W boson confirmed the SU(2) flavor asymmetry of the light…
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is carrying out a spin physics program colliding transversely or longitudinally polarized proton beams at = 200-500 GeV to gain deeper insigh t into the spin structure and dynamics of the proton. These studies provide fundamental insight into Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One of the main objectives is the determination of the polarized gluon distribution function, g, through the measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, for various processes. Inclusive hadron and jet prod…
Search for heavy particles in the $b$-tagged dijet mass distribution with additional $b$-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment
该研究利用 ATLAS 的 103 fb⁻¹ 数据,通过额外低 p_T b 标记喷注和正交函数数据驱动本底方法,在双 b 喷注不变质量谱中寻找重共振粒子并给出 95% 置信水平截面上限。
The measurement of the central exclusive production of charged hadron pairs $h^{+}h^{-}$ ($h = π, K, p$) by the STAR experiment at RHIC is reported. The data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV were used in this study. The pairs of charged hadrons produced in the reaction $pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime$ were reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons were measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections were measured in the fiducial region determined by the geometrical acceptance of the experimental setup. They…
In 2017, ATLAS has been equipped with a new, dedicated detector system allowing measurements of forward protons scattered at small angles in diffractive and electromagnetic processes. These ATLAS Forward Proton detectors (AFP) can operate during the standard high-luminosity LHC runs and collect large amounts of integrated luminosity. This gives a possibility to study rare interactions, in particular, the two-photon processes. The physics programme includes measurements of photon-photon interactions present in the Standard Model, as well as using searches for new physics. In this paper, the AFP…
In these proceedings, we present the higher-order cumulants of proton multiplicity distributions of the fixed-target (FXT) run in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 3.0 GeV. The cumulant ratios are presented as a function of centrality and collision energy. The proton cumulant ratio C4/C2 is consistent with fluctuations driven by baryon number conservation and indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions. These data imply that the QCD critical point could exist at energies higher than 3 GeV if created in heavy-ion collisions.
We perform a study of $W$-boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. This calculation is required to extend the extraction of polarized parton distribution functions to NNLO accuracy. We present differential distributions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, relevant for comparison to measurements from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The NNLO QCD corrections significantly reduce the scale dependence of the cross section. We compare the longitudinal single-spin asymmetries as a function of lepton pseudorapidity to RHIC …
A search for a narrow scalar resonance decaying into an opposite-sign muon pair produced in events with and without $b$-tagged jets is presented in this paper. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. No significant excess of events above the expected Standard Model background is observed in the investigated mass range of 0.2 to 1.0 TeV. The observed upper limits at 95$\%$ confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio for $b$-quark associated production and gluon-gluon fusion are between 1.9 and…
We report the first results on differential, total and elastic cross sections in proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. The data lwere obtained with the Roman Pot Detector subsystem of the STAR experiment. The data used for this analysis cover the four-momentum transfer squared ~($t$) range $ 0.045 \le |t| \le 0.135$ (GeV/c)$^2$. The Roman Pot system was placed downstream of the STAR detector. During the data taking the Roman Pots were moved to ~8$σ_{y}$, the vertical distance of from the beam center. They were operated during standard dat…
In the search of QCD phase boundary and critical point, higher-order cumulants of conserved quantities are proposed as promising observables and have been studied extensively both experimentally and theoretically. In this paper we present cumulant ratios up to $6^{th}$-order of net-proton number distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{\mathrm{s_{NN}}}$ = 7.7 - 200 GeV from STAR Beam Energy Scan program phase I and $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ = 200 GeV $p+p$ collisions. The results are compared with various models and Lattice QCD calculations.
Measurement of cross-sections for production of a $Z$ boson in association with a flavor-inclusive or doubly $b$-tagged large-radius jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory is carrying out a spin physics program in high-energy polarized $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200-500\,$GeV to gain a deeper insight into the spin structure and dynamics of the proton. One of the main objectives of the spin physics program at RHIC is the extraction of the polarized gluon distribution function based on measurements of gluon initiated processes, such as hadron and jet production. The STAR detector is well suited for the reconstruction of various final states involving jets, $…
At RHIC, the hydrogen jet target polarimeter (HJET) is used to measure proton beam polarization with accuracy $σ_P^\text{syst}/P\lesssim0.5\%$ by counting low energy (1--10 MeV) recoil protons in left-right symmetric detectors. The HJET performance also allowed us to precisely measure $pp$ and $p$A (where A is any ion stored at RHIC) analyzing powers in the CNI region. The results of the measurements are discussed.
We report systematic measurements of bulk properties of the system created in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum spectra of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p$($\bar{p}$) are studied at mid-rapidity $(\lvert y \rvert < 0.1)$ for different centrality classes. We also present mid-rapidity measurement of particle yields $(dN/dy)$ and particle ratios in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV. The kinetic freeze-out parameters ($T_{kin}$ and $\langle β\rangle$) are extracted from parti…
We study inclusive heavy quarkonium production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions using the non-relativistic QCD color-octet mechanism. We present results for rapidity distributions of cross sections and spin asymmetries for the production of J/psi and psi' with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at the RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range.
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory is carrying out a spin physics program in high-energy polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200\,$GeV and $\sqrt{s}=500\,$GeV to gain a deeper insight into the spin structure and dynamics of the proton. One of the main objectives of the spin physics program at RHIC is the precise determination of the polarized gluon distribution function. The STAR detector is well suited for the reconstruction of various final states involving jets, $π^{0}$, $π^{\pm}$, e$^{\pm}$ and $γ$, which allows to measure seve…
We study inclusive $χ_{cJ}$ production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at RHIC by using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) color-octet mechanism. We present results of rapidity distribution of $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range. We also present the corresponding results for the spin asymmetries.
Recent experimental advances at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the large center-of-mass energies available to the heavy-ion program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will enable strongly interacting matter at high temperatures and densities, that is, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), to be probed in unprecedented ways. Among these exciting new probes are fully-reconstructed inclusive jets and the away-side hadron showers associated with a weakly or electromagnetically interacting boson, or, tagged jets. Full jet reconstruction provides an experimental window into the mechanisms of…
We present preliminary differential fiducial cross sections on Central Exclusive Production (CEP, $pp\to pXp$) of two opposite-charge mesons ($X=π^{+}π^{-}$, $K^{+}K^{-}$) in midrapidity region with small squared four-momentum transferred from forward protons, $0.03<|t_{1}|,|t_{2}|<0.2~\textrm{GeV}^{2}$. The process was measured in the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}~=~200~\textrm{GeV}$.
The process pp$\to\ell^+\ell^-$p$^{(*)}$, with $\ell^+\ell^-$ a muon or an electron pair produced at midrapidity with mass larger than 110 GeV, has been observed for the first time at the LHC in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. One of the two scattered protons is measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (CT-PPS), which operated for the first time in 2016. The second proton either remains intact or is excited and then dissociates into a low-mass state p$^{*}$, which is undetected. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected during standard…
A search for narrow resonances decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs is presented, using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{-1}$. The search is extended to masses lower than those reached in typical searches for resonances decaying into jet pairs at the LHC, by taking advantage of triggers that identify jets originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of events is observed above the background predictions. Limits are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction to bottom quarks for sp…
We briefly review the existing psi(2S) data taken at RHIC, the Tevatron and the LHC. We systematically compare them with colour-singlet-model predictions as a function of the center-of-mass energy, of the quarkonium rapidity and of the quarkonium transverse momentum. The overall agreement is good except for large transverse momenta. This points at the existence of large NNLO corrections or points at colour-octet dominance.
RHIC is the only spin-polarized proton collider ever built. With a special optics run of $β^\star \approx 22$ m STAR detector system is suitable for an investigation of the spin dependence of elastic proton-proton scattering. This is a brief summary of measurements of spin asymmetries at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV and in the four-momentum transfer squared $-t$ range $0.003 < -t < 0.035$ GeV$^2$ by the STAR experiment at RHIC.
Two measurements related to the proton and anti-proton production near midrapidity in center of mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are discussed. At intermediate impact parameters the slope parameter of the directed flow versus rapidity (dv1/dy) for the net-protons shows a non-monotonic variation as a function of the beam energy. This non-monotonic variation is characterized by the presence of a minimum in dv1/dy between 11.5 and 19.6 GeV and a change in the sign of dv1/dy twice betwe…
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) performs studies of diffractive processes with the focus on the exclusive production of particles in central range of rapidity. In 2015 STAR collected 18 pb$^{-1}$ of data in polarized proton+proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV to measure Central Exclusive Production (CEP) process $pp\to pXp$ through Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) mechanism. The intact protons moving inside the RHIC beampipe after the collision were measured in silicon strip detectors (SSD), which were placed in the Roman Pot vessels. This enables full contro…
This report presents double helicity asymmetry in inclusive $π^0$ production in polarized proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 200 GeV. The data were collected with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) during the 2004 run. The data are compared to a next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculation.
The STAR experiment at RHIC is carrying out a comprehensive high-energy spin physics program to understand the internal structure and dynamics of the proton in polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s} = 500/510$ GeV. STAR has the capability, with nearly full azimuthal coverage, to reconstruct leptons, hadrons and jets in the mid-rapidity region ($|η|<1$). The results for inclusive jet longitudinal double spin asymmetries taken during the 2009 RHIC run indicate the first non-zero gluon contribution ($Δg(x,Q^{2}) / g(x,Q^{2})$) to the proton spin for $0.05<x<1$ (B…
Photon induced processes can be used as a sensitive probe of new physics searches and can be studied using exclusive processes. These processes lead to unprecedented sensitivities on quartic anomalous couplings between photons and W and Z bosons, and new physics searches. By tagging the leading proton from the hard interaction, the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) provides an increased sensitivity to select exclusive processes. PPS is designed to operate in standard high-luminosity runs at the LHC to perform measurements of e.g. the quartic gauge couplings and search for rare exclusive proc…
Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV
A search for exclusive two-photon production via photon exchange in proton-proton collisions, pp $\to$ p$γγ$p with intact protons, is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM detectors at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Events are selected with a diphoton invariant mass above 350 GeV and with both protons intact in the final state, to reduce backgrounds from strong interactions. The events of interest are those where the invariant mass and rapidity calculated from the momentum losses of the forward-movin…
Measurements are presented of the cross section for the production of at least four jets, of which at least two originate from b quarks, in proton-proton collisions. Data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 inverse picobarns. The cross section is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum for pt > 20 GeV, and of the jet pseudorapidity for abs(eta) < 2.4 (b jets), 4.7 (untagged jets). The correlations in azimuthal angle and pt between the jets are also studied. The inclusive cross sect…
A search is performed for narrow resonances decaying into $WW$, $WZ$, or $ZZ$ boson pairs using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Diboson resonances with masses in the range from 1.3 to 3.0 TeV are sought after using the invariant mass distribution of dijets where both jets are tagged as a boson jet, compatible with a highly boosted $W$ or $Z$ boson decaying to quarks, using jet mass and substructure properties. The largest deviation from a smoothly falling background in…
The first run of transverse polarized protons at RHIC was recently completed which opened a new era exploring the spin structure of the proton. A first measurement of the single transverse spin asymmetry, $A_{N}$, for leading $π_{0}$ production from transverse colliding polarized protons at $\sqrt(s)=200 $GeV, $X_{F}>0.25$ and $p_{T}\simeq 1-4 $GeV was a focus of the STAR collaboration during the first polarized proton run at RHIC. Two new subcomponents have been added to the STAR experiment to carry out such a measurement in polarized proton collisions: a forward $π_{0}$ detector system at ap…
We report on the measurement of the central exclusive production process $pp \ \rightarrow \ pXp$ in proton-proton collisions at RHIC with the STAR detector at $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}} = 510$ GeV. At this energy, this process is dominated by a double Pomeron exchange mechanism. The tracks of the centrally produced system $X$ were reconstructed in the central detector of STAR, the Time Projection Chamber and the Time of Flight systems, and were identified using the ionization energy loss and the time of flight method. The diffractively scattered protons, moving intact inside the RHIC beam pipe after …
We discuss hadron production in the forward rapidity region in ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions at the LHC and proton-gold collisions at RHIC. Our discussion is based on the Monte Carlo simulations of the interactions of virtual photons emitted by a fast moving nucleus with a proton beam. We simulate the virtual photon flux with the STARLIGHT event generator and then particle production with the SOPHIA, DPMJET, and PYTHIA event generators. We show the rapidity distributions of charged and neutral particles, and the momentum distributions of neutral pions and neutrons at forward rapiditie…
This talk reports on progress from the first two years of polarized proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). STAR is one of the two large experiments at RHIC. It features large acceptance spanning a broad range of rapidity. The long-term goals of the STAR spin program are to measure the gluon contribution to the proton's spin; determine the contribution of specific quark flavors to the spin of the proton through the study of spin observables for vector boson production, and to determine the transversity structure function. The stu…
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is the first accelerator facility that can accelerate, store and collide spin polarized proton beams. This development enables a physics program aimed at understanding how the spin of the proton results from its quark and gluon substructures. Spin states that are either parallel (longitudinal) or perpendicular (transverse) to the proton momentum reveal important insight into the structure of the proton. This talk outlines future plans for further studies of transverse spin physics at RHIC.
A search is presented for an excess of events with large missing transverse momentum in association with at least one highly energetic jet, in a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The results are interpreted using a set of simplified models for the production of dark matter via a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial vector mediator. Additional sensitivity is achieved by tagging events consistent with the jets originating from a hadro…
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory delivers the world's highest energy polarized proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy up to 500 GeV and provides a unique opportunity to study the quark and gluon spin structure of the proton and QCD dynamics at high energy scale. RHIC has produced many exiting physics results in recent years. The latest data from RHIC significantly constrain the gluon spin contribution to the proton spin, and the parity violating single spin asymmetry are observed for the first time in W production by both the PHENIX and …
PHENIX has a well defined program for measuring the polarized gluon distribution in the nucleon. We measure the gluon polarization in the proton with polarized $p$-$p$ collisions at PHENIX. The measurements of gluon polarization $via$ the direct-photon production and the heavy-flavor production can be significantly improved by the silicon vertex tracker upgrade. We have studied the possible improvements of the gluon polarization measurements using Monte Carlo simulation and they are shown and discussed in this paper.
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is carrying out a spin physics program colliding transverse or longitudinal polarized proton beams at $\sqrt{s}=200-500 $GeV to gain a deeper insight into the spin structure and dynamics of the proton. These studies provide fundamental tests of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One of the main objectives of the STAR spin physics program is the determination of the polarized gluon distribution function through a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, for various proces…
The STAR collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is using polarized proton beams at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV to study the spin structure of the proton. The first results for the double spin helicity dependence of inclusive jet production are presented along with projections for additional data taken in 2005 and 2006. When fully analyzed these data sets should place strong constraints on the possible contribution of gluonic spin to the proton spin as expressed by Delta G. Future studies using 2-jet or photon-jet coincidences to map out the gluon spin distribution vs. the gluon's momentum …
We calculate the inclusive production of a polarized $Λ$ or $\barΛ$ hyperon from the single longitudinally polarized proton and proton ($pp$) collision at RHIC. By comparing the data reported by the STAR Collaboration, we find that this process is sensitive to the polarization of strange and antistrange quarks of the proton in the experimental range. By introducing asymmetric coefficients with the minimization of $χ^2$, we further identify the asymmetry of the polarized strange-antistrange quarks in the proton sea and find that the first moment is $Δs \approx -0.025\pm 0.019$ for strange quark…
The physics goals that will be addressed by colliding polarized protons at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are described. The RHIC spin program provides a new generation of experiments that will unfold the quark, anti-quark and gluon contributions to the proton's spin. In addition to these longer term goals, this paper describes what was learned from the first polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. These collisions took place in a five-week run during the second year of RHIC operation.
