It is proven that the eigenvalue process of Dyson's random matrix process of size two becomes non-Markov if the common coefficient $1/\sqrt{2}$ in the non-diagonal entries is replaced by a different positive number.
We study the spectrum of the kinetic Brownian motion in the space of $d\times d$ Hermitian matrices, $d\geq2$. We show that the eigenvalues stay distinct for all times, and that the process $Λ$ of eigenvalues is a kinetic diffusion (i.e. the pair $(Λ,\dotΛ)$ of $Λ$ and its derivative is Markovian) if and only if $d=2$. In the large scale and large time limit, we show that $Λ$ converges to the usual (Markovian) Dyson Brownian motion under suitable normalisation, regardless of the dimension.
Extensions of Kemeny's constant, as derived for irreducible finite Markov chains in discrete time, to Markov renewal processes and Markov chains in continuous time are discussed. Three alternative Kemeny's functions and their variants are considered. Typically, they lead to a constant if and only if the mean holding times between the states in the Markov renewal process are constant. However one particular variant leads to a constant, analogous to the discrete time Markov chain result. Specifically, if the state space is finite, the weighted sum of the mean first passage times (omitting the me…
The aim of this note is to show, by providing an elementary way to construct counter-examples, that the strong Feller and the joint (space-time) continuity for a semigroup of Markov kernels on a Polish space are not enough to ensure the existence of an associated càdlàg Markov process on the same space. One such simple counter-example is the Brownian semigroup on $\mathbb{R}$ restricted to $\mathbb{R}\setminus \{0\}$, for which it is shown that there is no associated càdlàg Markov process. Using the same idea and results from potential theory we then prove that the analogous result with càdlàg…
The aim of this article is to prove that diffusion processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a drift can be approximated by suitable Markov chains on $n^{-1}\mathbb{Z}^d$. Moreover, we investigate sufficient conditions on the conductances which guarantee convergence of the associated Markov chains to such Markov processes. Analogous questions are answered for a large class of nonsymmetric jump processes. The proofs of our results rely on regularity estimates for weak solutions to the corresponding nonsymmetric parabolic equations and Dirichlet form techniques.
Let $X$ be a standard Markov process. We prove that a space inversion property of $X$ implies the existence of a Kelvin transform of $X$-harmonic, excessive and operator-harmonic functions and that the inversion property is inherited by Doob $h$-transforms. We determine new classes of processes having space inversion properties amongst transient processes {satisfying the} time inversion property. {For these processes, some explicit inversions, which are often not the spherical ones, and excessive functions are given explicitly.} We treat in details the examples of free scaled power Bessel proc…
It is well known that a regular diffusion on an interval $I$ without killing inside is uniquely determined by a canonical scale function $s$ and a canonical speed measure $m$. Note that $s$ is a strictly increasing and continuous function and $m$ is a fully supported Radon measure on $I$. In this paper we will associate a general triple $(I,s,m)$, where $s$ is only assumed to be increasing and $m$ is not necessarily fully supported, to certain Markov processes by way of Dirichlet forms. Using two transformations, called scale completion and darning respectively, to rebuild the topology of $I$,…
We prove one-to-one correspondences between certain decreasing Loewner chains in the upper half-plane, a special class of real-valued Markov processes, and quantum stochastic processes with monotonically independent additive increments. This leads us to a detailed investigation of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}$ with univalent Cauchy transform. We discuss several subclasses of such measures and obtain characterizations in terms of analytic and geometric properties of the corresponding Cauchy transforms. Furthermore, we obtain analogous results for the setting of decreasing Loewner chains …
