Price's Law states that linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole fall off as $t^{-2\ell-3}$ for $t \to \infty$ provided the initial data decay sufficiently fast at spatial infinity. Moreover, if the perturbations are initially static (i.e., their time derivative is zero), then the decay is predicted to be $t^{-2\ell-4}$. We give a proof of $t^{-2\ell-2}$ decay for general data in the form of weighted $L^1$ to $L^\infty$ bounds for solutions of the Regge--Wheeler equation. For initially static perturbations we obtain $t^{-2\ell-3}$. The proof is based on an integral representation of the solution which follows from self--adjoint spectral theory. We apply two different perturbative arguments in order to construct the corresponding spectral measure and the decay bounds are obtained by appropriate oscillatory integral estimates.
We consider in this work the asymptotics of a Maxwell field in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. In any subextremal Kerr spacetime, we show energy and pointwise decay estimates for all components under an assumption of a basic energy and Morawetz estimate for spin $\pm 1$ components. If restricted to slowly rotating Kerr, we utilize the basic energy and Morawetz estimates proven in an earlier work to further improve these decay estimates such that the total power of decay for all components of Maxwell field is $-7/2$. In the end, depending on if the Newman--Penrose constant vanishes or not, w…
An L-pole perturbation in Schwarzschild spacetime generally falls off at late times t as t^{-2L-3}. It has recently been pointed out by Karkowski, Swierczynski and Malec, that for initial data that is of compact support, and is initially momentarily static, the late-time behavior is different, going as t^{-2L-4}. By considering the Laplace transforms of the fields, we show here why the momentarily stationary case is exceptional. We also explain, using a time-domain description, the special features of the time development in this exceptional case.
We argue that it is possible to assign Bondi as well as ADM four-momentum to the ultrarelativistic limit of the Schwarzschild black hole in agreement to what is expected on physical grounds: The Bondi-momentum is lightlike and equal to the ADM-momentum up to the retarded time when particle and radiation escape to infinity and drops to zero thereafter, leaving flat space behind.
For the radial motion of massive particles with large angular momenta in Schwarzschild geometry and that of massive charged particles with large angular momenta or energy in a particular range in Reissner--Nordström geometry, there exist classically forbidden regions on the outside of the respective event horizons which scatter certain infalling geodesics or screen some of the black holes' evaporation by reflecting the emitted particles back into the black holes. Quantum tunneling across this forbidden regions is studied.
We study quasinormal modes for massive scalar fields in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes. When the mass-squared is above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound we show that for large angular momenta, $\ell$, there exist quasinormal modes with imaginary parts of size $\exp(-\ell/C)$. We provide an asymptotic expansion for the real parts of the modes closest to the real axis and identify the vanishing of certain coefficients depending on the dimension.
We discuss the asymptotic structure of the ultrarelativistic Schwarzschild black hole. An explicit construction for a conformal boundary both at spatial and null infinity is given together with the corresponding expressions for the ADM and Bondi four-momenta.
We consider the explicit asymptotic profile of massless Dirac fields on a Schwarzschild background. First, we prove for the spin $s=\pm \frac{1}{2}$ components of the Dirac field a uniform bound of a positive definite energy and an integrated local energy decay estimate from a symmetric hyperbolic wave system. Based on these estimates, we further show that these components have globally pointwise decay $fv^{-3/2-s}τ^{-5/2+s}$ as both an upper and a lower bound outside the black hole, with function $f$ finite and explicitly expressed in terms of the initial data and the coordinates. This establ…
We study the behavior of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless and massive linear waves on Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes as the black hole mass tends to 0. Via uniform estimates for a degenerating family of ODEs, we show that in bounded subsets of the complex plane and for fixed angular momenta, the QNMs converge to those of the static model of de Sitter space. Detailed numerics illustrate our results and suggest a number of open problems.
We study the motion of a spinning particle with gravimagnetic moment in Schwarzschild-like spacetimes with a metric $ds^2=-f(r) dt^2 + f^{-1}(r) dr^2 + r^2 dΩ^2$, specifically we deal with Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom black holes as well as Ayon-Beato-Garcia and Bardeen regular spacetimes. First, we introduce the Hamiltonian system of equations which describes such kind of particles. In the case of null gravimagnetic moment, the equations are equivalent to the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew-Dixon (MPTD) equations. Working in the equatorial plane, using the constants of motion generated by…
An analysis of the energy-momentum localization for a four-dimensional\break Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence is presented in order to provide expressions for the distributions of energy and momentum. The calculations are performed by using the Landau-Lifshitz and Weinberg energy-momentum complexes. It is shown that all the momenta vanish, while the expression for the energy depends on the mass $M$ of the black hole, the state parameter $w_{q}$ and the normalization factor $c$. The special case of $w_{q}=-2/3$ is also studied, and two limiting cases are examined.
We study a Hamiltonian quantum formalism of a spherically symmetric space-time which can be identified with the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. The phase space of this model is spanned by two dynamical variables and their conjugate momenta. It is shown that the classical Lagrangian of the model gives rise the interior metric of a Schwarzschild black hole. We also show that the the mass of such a system is a Dirac observable and then by quantization of the model by Wheeler-DeWitt approach and constructing suitable wave packets we get the mass spectrum of the black hole.
We study the wave equation on the real line with a potential that falls off like $|x|^{-α}$ for $|x| \to \infty$ where $2 < α\leq 4$. We prove that the solution decays pointwise like $t^{-α}$ as $t \to \infty$ provided that there are no resonances at zero energy and no bound states. As an application we consider the $\ell=0$ Price Law for Schwarzschild black holes. This paper is part of our investigations into decay of linear waves on a Schwarzschild background.
We derive a transformation from the usual ADM metric-extrinsic curvature variables on the phase space of Schwarzschild black holes, to new canonical variables which have the interpretation of Kruskal coordinates. We explicitly show that this transformation is non-singular, even at the horizon. The constraints of the theory simplify in terms of the new canonical variables and are equivalent to the vanishing of the canonical momenta. Our work is based on earlier seminal work by Kuchar in which he reconstructed curvature coordinates and a mass function from spherically symmetric canonical data. T…
The Newman-Janis (NJ) method is a prescription to derive the Kerr space-time from the Schwarzschild metric. The BTZ, Kerr and five-dimensional Myers-Perry (MP) black hole solutions have already been generated by different versions of the NJ method. However, it is not known how to generate the metric of higher-dimensional (d > 6) rotating black holes by this method. In this paper, we propose the simplest algorithm for generation of the five-dimensional MP metric with two arbitrary angular momenta by using the Kerr-Schild form of the metric and quaternions. Then, we present another new two-step …
It has been revealed that the first order symmetry operator for the linearized Einstein equation on a vacuum spacetime can be constructed from a Killing-Yano 3-form. This might be used to construct all or part of solutions to the field equation. In this paper, we perform a mode decomposition of a metric perturbation on the Schwarzschild spacetime and the Myers-Perry spacetime with equal angular momenta in 5 dimensions, and investigate the action of the symmetry operator on specific modes concretely. We show that on such spacetimes, there is no transition between the modes of a metric perturbat…
Waves propagating in the relativistic electron-positron or ions plasma are investigated in a frame of two-fluid equations using the 3+1 formalism of general relativity developed by Thorne, Price and Macdonald (TPM). The plasma is assumed to be freefalling in the radial direction toward the event horizon due to the strong gravitational field of a Schwarzschild black hole. The local dispersion relations for transverse and longitudinal waves have been derived, in analogy with the special relativistic formulation as explained in an earlier paper, to take account of relativistic effects due to the …
The curvature coordinates $T,R$ of a Schwarz\-schild spacetime are turned into canonical coordinates $T(r), {\sf R}(r)$ on the phase space of spherically symmetric black holes. The entire dynamical content of the Hamiltonian theory is reduced to the constraints requiring that the momenta $P_{T}(r), P_{\sf R}(r)$ vanish. What remains is a conjugate pair of canonical variables $m$ and $p$ whose values are the same on every embedding. The coordinate $m$ is the Schwarzschild mass, and the momentum $p$ the difference of parametrization times at right and left infinities. The Dirac constraint quanti…
The 3+1 formalism of Thorne, Price and Macdonald has been used to derive the linear two-fluid equations describing transverse and longitudinal waves propagating in the two-fluid ideal collisionless plasmas surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole. The plasma is assumed to be falling in radial direction toward the event horizon. The relativistic two-fluid equations have been reformulate, in analogy with the special relativistic formulation as explained in an earlier paper, to take account of relativistic effects due to the event horizon. Here a WKB approximation is used to derive the local disper…
We consider an observer who moves under the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and absorbs a photon. There are two different situations when (i) a photon comes from infinity, (ii) it is emitted by another observer under the horizon (say, by a surface of a collapsing star). We analyze the frequency change for absorption near the event horizon, in an intermediate region and near the singularity and compare the results for both scenarios. Near the singularity, in both scenarios infinite redshift (in the pure radial case) or infinite blueshift are possible, depending on angular momenta of a p…
We describe a pseudo-Newtonian potential which, to within 1% error at all angular momenta, reproduces the precession due to general relativity of particles whose specific orbital energy is small compared to c^2 in the Schwarzschild metric. For bound orbits the constraint of low energy is equivalent to requiring the apoapsis of a particle to be large compared to the Schwarzschild radius. Such low energy orbits are ubiquitous close to supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei, but the potential is relevant in any context containing particles on low energy orbits. Like the more complex post-New…
We consider solutions to the linear wave equation $\Box_gϕ=0$ on a non-extremal maximally extended Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime arising from arbitrary smooth initial data prescribed on an arbitrary Cauchy hypersurface. (In particular, no symmetry is assumed on initial data, and the support of the solutions may contain the sphere of bifurcation of the black/white hole horizons and the cosmological horizons.) We prove that in the region bounded by a set of black/white hole horizons and cosmological horizons, solutions $ϕ$ converge pointwise to a constant faster than any given polynomial rat…
We review, as well as provide some new results regarding the study of the structure of spacetime and the singularity in the interior of the Schwarzschild black hole in both loop quantum gravity and generalized uncertainty principle approaches, using congruences and their associated expansion scalar and the Raychaudhuri equation. We reaffirm previous results that in loop quantum gravity, in all three major schemes of polymer quantization, the expansion scalar, Raychaudhuri equation and the Kretschmann scalar remain finite everywhere in the interior. In the context of the eneralized uncertainty …
We formulate a spherical harmonically decomposed 1+1 scheme to self-consistently evolve the trajectory of a point particle and its gravitational metric perturbation to a Schwarzschild background spacetime. Following the work of Moncrief, we write down an action for perturbations in space-time geometry, combine that with the action for a point-particle, and then obtain Hamiltonian equations of motion for metric perturbations, the particle's coordinates, as well as their canonical momenta. Hamiltonian equations for the metric-perturbation and their conjugate momenta reduce to Zerilli-Moncrief an…
We present a formalism to study the metric perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime. The formalism is gauge invariant, and it is also covariant under two-dimensional coordinate transformations that leave the angular coordinates unchanged. The formalism is applied to the typical problem of calculating the gravitational waves produced by material sources moving in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We examine the radiation escaping to future null infinity as well as the radiation crossing the event horizon. The waveforms, the energy radiated, and the angular-momentum radiated can all be expressed …
We study the canonical description of the axisymmetric vacuum in 2+1 dimensional gravity, treating Einstein's gravity as a Chern Simons gauge theory on a manifold with the restriction that the dreibein is invertible. Our treatment is in the spirit of Kucha\v r's description of the Schwarzschild black hole in 3+1 dimensions, where the mass and angular momentum are expressed in terms of the canonical variables and a series of canonical transformations are performed that turn the curvature coordinates and their conjugate momenta into new canonical variables. In their final form, the constraints a…
We study various mathematical aspects of the charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta in five dimensions. We introduce a coordinate system that is regular on the horizon and in which Einstein-Maxwell equations reduce to an autonomous system of ODEs. Employing Bondi and Kruskal-like coordinates, we analyze the geometric regularity of the black hole metric at infinity and the horizon, respectively, and the well-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problem. We also study the algebraic types of the electromagnetic and curvature tensors. While outside the horizo…
We prove Price's law with an explicit leading order term for solutions $ϕ(t,x)$ of the scalar wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes including subextremal Kerr black holes. Our precise asymptotics in the full forward causal cone imply in particular that $ϕ(t,x)=c t^{-3}+\mathcal O(t^{-4+})$ for bounded $|x|$, where $c\in\mathbb C$ is an explicit constant. This decay also holds along the event horizon on Kerr spacetimes and thus renders a result by Luk-Sbierski on the linear scalar instability of the Cauchy horizon unconditional. We moreover pr…
We study perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole in Chern-Simons modified gravity. We begin by showing that Birkhoff's theorem holds for a wide family of Chern-Simons coupling functions, a scalar field present in the theory that controls the strength of the Chern-Simons correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action. After decomposing the perturbations in spherical harmonics, we study the linearized modified field equations and find that axial and polar modes are coupled, in contrast to general relativity. The divergence of the modified equations leads to the Pontryagin constraint, which forces…
In this paper, we study solutions to the linearized vacuum Einstein equations centered at higher-dimensional Schwarzschild met- rics. We employ Hodge decomposition to split solutions into scalar, co-vector, and two-tensor pieces; the first two portions respectively cor- respond to the closed and co-closed, or polar and axial, solutions in the case of four spacetime dimensions, while the two-tensor portion is a new feature in the higher-dimensional setting. Rephrasing earlier work of Kodama-Ishibashi-Seto in the language of our Hodge decomposition, we produce decoupled gauge-invariant master qu…

A generalisation of Price's theorem is given for application to Inflationary Cosmologies. Namely, we show that on a Schwarzschild--de Sitter background there are no static solutions to the wave or gravitational perturbation equations for modes with angular momentum greater than their intrinsic spin.
Gravitational perturbations due to a point particle moving on a static black hole background are naturally described in Regge-Wheeler gauge. The first-order field equations reduce to a single master wave equation for each radiative mode. The master function satisfying this wave equation is a linear combination of the metric perturbation amplitudes with a source term arising from the stress-energy tensor of the point particle. The original master functions were found by Regge and Wheeler (odd parity) and Zerilli (even parity). Subsequent work by Moncrief and then Cunningham, Price and Moncrief …
We study the stability of quasinormal modes (QNM) in asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes by means of a pseudospectrum analysis. The construction of the Schwarzschild QNM pseudospectrum reveals the following: (i) the stability of the slowest-decaying QNM under perturbations respecting the asymptotic structure, reassessing the instability of the fundamental QNM discussed by Nollert [H. P. Nollert, About the Significance of Quasinormal Modes of Black Holes, Phys. Rev. D 53, 4397 (1996)] as an "infrared" effect; (ii) the instability of all overtones under small-scale ("ultraviolet") perturba…
We study the gravitational radiation emitted by a massive point particle plunging from slightly below the innermost stable circular orbit into a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider both even- and odd-parity perturbations and describe them using the two gauge-invariant master functions of Cunningham, Price, and Moncrief. We obtain, for arbitrary directions of observation and, in particular, outside the orbital plane of the plunging particle, the regularized multipolar waveforms, i.e., the waveforms constructed by summing over of a large number of modes, and their unregularized counterparts co…
We study the stability of the noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole interior by analysing the propagation of a massless scalar field between the two horizons. We show that the spacetime fuzziness triggered by the field higher momenta can cure the classical exponential blue shift divergence, suppressing the emergence of infinite energy density in a region nearby the Cauchy horizon.
Motivated by the brane-world scenarios, we study the absorption problem when the spacetime background is $(4+n)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. We compute the low-energy absorption cross sections for the brane-localized massive scalar, brane-localized massive Dirac fermion, and massive bulk scalar. For the case of brane-localized massive Dirac fermion we introduce the particle's spin in the traditional Dirac form without invoking the Newman-Penrose method. Our direct introduction of spin enables us to compute contributions to the $j$th-level partial absorption cross section from orbital…
We consider semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the real line of the form $$H(\hbar)=-\hbar^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V(\cdot;\hbar)$$ with $\hbar>0$ small. The potential $V$ is assumed to be smooth, positive and exponentially decaying towards infinity. We establish semiclassical global representations of Jost solutions $f_\pm(\cdot,E;\hbar)$ with error terms that are uniformly controlled for small $E$ and $\hbar$, and construct the scattering matrix as well as the semiclassical spectral measure associated to $H(\hbar)$. This is crucial in order to obtain decay bounds for the corresponding wave an…
We provide a rigorous derivation of the precise late-time asymptotics for solutions to the scalar wave equation on subextremal Kerr backgrounds, including the asymptotics for projections to angular frequencies $\ell\geq 1$ and $\ell\geq 2$. The $\ell$-dependent asymptotics on Kerr spacetimes differ significantly from the non-rotating Schwarzschild setting ("Price's law"). The main differences with Schwarzschild are slower decay rates for higher angular frequencies and oscillations along the null generators of the event horizon. We introduce a physical space-based method that resolves the follo…
The most promising way to compute the gravitational waves emitted by binary black holes (BBHs) in their last dozen orbits, where post-Newtonian techniques fail, is a quasistationary approximation introduced by Detweiler and being pursued by Price and others. In this approximation the outgoing gravitational waves at infinity and downgoing gravitational waves at the holes' horizons are replaced by standing waves so as to guarantee that the spacetime has a helical Killing vector field. Because the horizon generators will not, in general, be tidally locked to the holes' orbital motion, the standin…
We consider a cosmological model based upon a non-canonical noncommutative extension of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra to address the thermodynamical stability and the singularity problem of both the Schwarzschild and the Kantowski-Sachs black holes. The interior of the black hole is modelled by a noncommutative extension of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We compute the temperature and entropy of a Kantowski-Sachs black hole and compare our results with the Hawking values. Again, the noncommutativity in the momenta sector allows us to have a minimum in the potential, which is relevant in order to a…
In recent work of Allen at. al., heuristic and numerical arguments were put forth to suggest that boundary value problems for black hole evolution, where an appropriate Sommerfeld radiation condition is imposed, would fail to produce Price law tails. The interest in this issue lies in its possible implications for numerical relativity, where black hole evolution is typically studied in terms of such boundary formulations. In this note, it is shown rigorously that indeed, Price law tails do not arise in this case, i.e. that Sommerfeld (and more general) radiation conditions lead to decay faster…
We study the main properties of general linear perturbations of rotating black holes in asymptotically flat higher-dimensional spacetimes. In particular, we determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of singly spinning and equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes (MP BHs). Emphasis is also given to the timescale of the ultraspinning and bar-mode instabilities in these two families of MP BHs. For the bar-mode instabilities in the singly spinning MP BH, we find excellent agreement with our linear analysis and the non-linear time evolution of Shibata and Yoshino for d=6,7 spacetime dimens…

We extend a recently derived higher-dimensional Cardy formula to include angular momenta, which we use to obtain the Bekensten-Hawking entropy of AdS black branes, compactified rotating branes, and large Schwarzschild/Kerr black holes. This is the natural generalization of Strominger's microscopic derivation of the BTZ black hole entropy to higher dimensions. We propose an extension to include $U(1)$ charge, which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Reissner-Nordstrom/Kerr-Newman black holes at high temperature. We extend the results to arbitrary hyperscaling violation exponent…
We construct approximate analytical solutions to the constraint equations of general relativity for binary black holes of arbitrary mass ratio in quasicircular orbit. We adopt the puncture method to solve the constraint equations in the transverse-traceless decomposition and consider perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes caused by boosts and the presence of a binary companion. A superposition of these two perturbations then yields approximate, but fully analytic binary black hole initial data that are accurate to first order in the inverse of the binary separation and the square of the bl…
