Multipath interference is an ubiquitous phenomenon in modern communication systems. The conventional way to compensate for this effect is to equalize the channel by estimating its impulse response by transmitting a set of training symbols. The primary drawback to this type of approach is that it can be unreliable if the channel is changing rapidly. In this paper, we show that randomly encoding the signal can protect it against channel uncertainty when the channel is sparse. Before transmission, the signal is mapped into a slightly longer codeword using a random matrix. From the received signal, we are able to simultaneously estimate the channel and recover the transmitted signal. We discuss two schemes for the recovery. Both of them exploit the sparsity of the underlying channel. We show that if the channel impulse response is sufficiently sparse, the transmitted signal can be recovered reliably.
In this work we explore possibilities for coding when information worlds have different (semantic) values. We introduce a loss function that expresses the overall performance of a coding scheme for discrete channels and exchange the usual goal of minimizing the error probability to that of minimizing the expected loss. In this environment we explore the possibilities of using poset-decoders to make a message-wise unequal error protection (UEP), where the most valuable information is protected by placing in its proximity information words that differ by small valued information. Similar definit…
Link and node failures are two common fundamental problems that affect operational networks. Protection of communication networks against such failures is essential for maintaining network reliability and performance. Network protection codes (NPC) are proposed to protect operational networks against link and node failures. Furthermore, encoding and decoding operations of such codes are well developed over binary and finite fields. Finding network topologies, practical scenarios, and limits on graphs applicable for NPC are of interest. In this paper, we establish limits on network protection d…
In this paper we develop network protection strategies against a single link failure in optical networks. The motivation behind this work is the fact that $%70$ of all available links in an optical network suffers from a single link failure. In the proposed protection strategies, denoted NPS-I and NPS-II, we deploy network coding and reduced capacity on the working paths to provide a backup protection path that will carry encoded data from all sources. In addition, we provide implementation aspects and how to deploy the proposed strategies in case of an optical network with $n$ disjoint workin…
The enormous increase in the usage of communication networks has made protection against node and link failures essential in the deployment of reliable networks. To prevent loss of data due to node failures, a network protection strategy is proposed that aims to withstand such failures. Particularly, a protection strategy against any single node failure is designed for a given network with a set of $n$ disjoint paths between senders and receivers. Network coding and reduced capacity are deployed in this strategy without adding extra working paths to the readily available connection paths. This…
This paper introduces a network coding-based protection scheme against single and multiple link failures. The proposed strategy ensures that in a connection, each node receives two copies of the same data unit: one copy on the working circuit, and a second copy that can be extracted from linear combinations of data units transmitted on a shared protection path. This guarantees instantaneous recovery of data units upon the failure of a working circuit. The strategy can be implemented at an overlay layer, which makes its deployment simple and scalable. While the proposed strategy is similar in s…
We propose a network-coding based scheme to protect multiple bidirectional unicast connections against adversarial errors and failures in a network. The network consists of a set of bidirectional primary path connections that carry the uncoded traffic. The end nodes of the bidirectional connections are connected by a set of shared protection paths that provide the redundancy required for protection. Such protection strategies are employed in the domain of optical networks for recovery from failures. In this work we consider the problem of simultaneous protection against adversarial errors and …
We develop and analyze new cooperative strategies for ad hoc networks that are more spectrally efficient than classical DF cooperative protocols. Using analog network coding, our strategies preserve the practical half-duplex assumption but relax the orthogonality constraint. The introduction of interference due to non-orthogonality is mitigated thanks to precoding, in particular Dirty Paper coding. Combined with smart power allocation, our cooperation strategies allow to save time and lead to more efficient use of bandwidth and to improved network throughput with respect to classical RDF/PDF.
Protecting against link failures in communication networks is essential to increase robustness, accessibility, and reliability of data transmission. Recently, network coding has been proposed as a solution to provide agile and cost efficient network protection against link failures, which does not require data rerouting, or packet retransmission. To achieve this, separate paths have to be provisioned to carry encoded packets, hence requiring either the addition of extra links, or reserving some of the resources for this purpose. In this paper, we propose network protection codes against a sing…
Taking into account of both the huge computing power of intruders and untrusted cloud servers, we develop an enhanced secure pseudonym scheme to protect the privacy of mobile cloud data. To face the huge computing power challenge, we develop an unconditionally secure lightweight network coding pseudonym scheme. For the privacy issue of untrusted cloud server, we further design a two tier network coding to decouple the stored mobile cloud data from the owner pseudonyms. Therefore, our proposed network coding based pseudonym scheme can simultaneously defend against attackers from both outside an…
From currency to cloud storage systems, the continuous rise of the blockchain technology is moving various information systems towards decentralization. Blockchain-based decentralized storage networks (DSNs) offer significantly higher privacy and lower costs to customers compared with centralized cloud storage associated with specific vendors. Coding is required in order to retrieve data stored on failing components. While coding solutions for centralized storage have been intensely studied, topology-aware coding for heterogeneous DSNs have not yet been discussed. In this paper, we propose a j…
In this paper, we propose an open-loop unequal-error-protection querying policy based on superposition coding for the noisy 20 questions problem. In this problem, a player wishes to successively refine an estimate of the value of a continuous random variable by posing binary queries and receiving noisy responses. When the queries are designed non-adaptively as a single block and the noisy responses are modeled as the output of a binary symmetric channel the 20 questions problem can be mapped to an equivalent problem of channel coding with unequal error protection (UEP). A new non-adaptive quer…
We take a unified view of network coding and decentralized control. Precisely speaking, we consider both as linear time-invariant systems by appropriately restricting channels and coding schemes of network coding to be linear time-invariant, and the plant and controllers of decentralized control to be linear time-invariant as well. First, we apply linear system theory to network coding. This gives a novel way of converting an arbitrary relay network to an equivalent acyclic single-hop relay network, which we call Network Linearization. Based on network linearization, we prove that the fundamen…
Agile recovery from link failures in autonomic communication networks is essential to increase robustness, accessibility, and reliability of data transmission. However, this must be done with the least amount of protection resources, while using simple management plane functionality. Recently, network coding has been proposed as a solution to provide agile and cost efficient network self-healing against link failures, in a manner that does not require data rerouting, packet retransmission, or failure localization, hence leading to simple control and management planes. To achieve this, separate…
Coding and testing schemes for binary hypothesis testing over noisy networks are proposed and their corresponding type-II error exponents are derived. When communication is over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC), our scheme combines Shimokawa-Han-Amari's hypothesis testing scheme with Borade's unequal error protection (UEP) for channel coding. A separate source channel coding architecture is employed. The resulting exponent is optimal for the newly introduced class of \emph{generalized testing against conditional independence}. When communication is over a MAC or a BC, our scheme combines hy…
Linear network coding transmits information in terms of a basis of a vector space and the information is received as a basis of a possible altered vectorspace. Ralf Koetter and Frank R. Kschischang in Coding for errors and erasures in random network coding (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol.54, no.8, pp. 3579-3591,2008) introduced a metric on the set af vector-spaces and showed that a minimal distance decoder for this metric achieves correct decoding if the dimension of the intersection of the transmitted and received vector-space is sufficiently large. From the Veronese varieties w…
Utilizing device-to-device (D2D) connections among mobile devices is promising to meet the increasing throughput demand over cellular links. In particular, when mobile devices are in close proximity of each other and are interested in the same content, D2D connections such as Wi-Fi Direct can be opportunistically used to construct a cooperative (and jointly operating) cellular and D2D networking system. However, it is crucial to understand, quantify, and exploit the potential of network coding for cooperating mobile devices in the joint cellular and D2D setup. In this paper, we consider this p…
This is a tale of two linear programming decoders, namely channel coding linear programming decoding (CC-LPD) and compressed sensing linear programming decoding (CS-LPD). So far, they have evolved quite independently. The aim of the present paper is to show that there is a tight connection between, on the one hand, CS-LPD based on a zero-one measurement matrix over the reals and, on the other hand, CC-LPD of the binary linear code that is obtained by viewing this measurement matrix as a binary parity-check matrix. This connection allows one to translate performance guarantees from one setup to…
In this paper we close the gap between end-to-end diversity coding and intra-session network coding for unicast connections resilient against single link failures. In particular, we show that coding operations are sufficient to perform at the source and receiver if the user data can be split into at most two parts over the filed GF(2). Our proof is purely combinatorial and based on standard graph and network flow techniques. It is a linear time construction that defines the route of subflows A, B and A+B between the source and destination nodes. The proposed resilient flow decomposition method…
Adaptive coding faces the following problem: given a collection of source classes such that each class in the collection has non-trivial minimax redundancy rate, can we design a single code which is asymptotically minimax over each class in the collection? In particular, adaptive coding makes sense when there is no universal code on the union of classes in the collection. In this paper, we deal with classes of sources over an infinite alphabet, that are characterized by a dominating envelope. We provide asymptotic equivalents for the redundancy of envelope classes enjoying a regular variation …
For data streaming applications, existing solutions are not yet able to close the gap between high data rates and low delay. This work considers the problem of data streaming under mixed delay constraints over a single communication channel with delayed feedback. We propose a novel layered adaptive causal random linear network coding (LAC-RLNC) approach with forward error correction. LAC-RLNC is a variable-to-variable coding scheme, i.e., variable recovered information data at the receiver over variable short block length and rate is proposed. Specifically, for data streaming with base and enh…
In this work we study the problem of misbehavior detection in wireless networks. A commonly adopted approach is to utilize the broadcasting nature of the wireless medium and have nodes monitor their neighborhood. We call such nodes the Watchdogs. In this paper, we first show that even if a watchdog can overhear all packet transmissions of a flow, any linear operation of the overheard packets can not eliminate miss-detection and is inefficient in terms of bandwidth. We propose a light-weigh misbehavior detection scheme which integrates the idea of watchdogs and error detection coding. We show t…
In this paper, an integer programming approach is introduced to construct Unequal Error Protection (UEP) codes for multiuser broadcast channels. We show that the optimal codes can be constructed that satisfy the integer programming bound. Based on the bound, we compute asymptotic code rate and perform throughput analysis for the degraded broadcast channel.
We propose a mechanism that incorporates network coding into TCP with only minor changes to the protocol stack, thereby allowing incremental deployment. In our scheme, the source transmits random linear combinations of packets currently in the congestion window. At the heart of our scheme is a new interpretation of ACKs - the sink acknowledges every degree of freedom (i.e., a linear combination that reveals one unit of new information) even if it does not reveal an original packet immediately. Such ACKs enable a TCP-like sliding-window approach to network coding. Our scheme has the nice proper…
Because of their capacity-approaching performance, graph-based codes have a wide range of applications, including communications and storage. In these codes, unequal error protection (UEP) can offer performance gains with limited rate loss. Recent empirical results in magnetic recording (MR) systems show that extra protection for the parity bits of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code via constrained coding results in significant density gains. In particular, when UEP is applied via more reliable parity bits, higher fidelity messages of parity bits are spread to all bits by message passing a…
In this work we investigate the behavior of the distortion threshold that can be guaranteed in joint source-channel coding, to within a prescribed excess-distortion probability. We show that the gap between this threshold and the optimal average distortion is governed by a constant that we call the joint source-channel dispersion. This constant can be easily computed, since it is the sum of the source and channel dispersions, previously derived. The resulting performance is shown to be better than that of any separation-based scheme. For the proof, we use unequal error protection channel codin…
We investigate the privacy of two approaches to (biometric) template protection: Helper Data Systems and Sparse Ternary Coding with Ambiguization. In particular, we focus on a privacy property that is often overlooked, namely how much leakage exists about one specific binary property of one component of the feature vector. This property is e.g. the sign or an indicator that a threshold is exceeded. We provide evidence that both approaches are able to protect such sensitive binary variables, and discuss how system parameters need to be set.
This paper considers the achievability and converse bounds on the maximal channel coding rate at a given blocklength and error probability over AWGN channels. The problem stems from covert communication with Gaussian codewords. By re-visiting [18], we first present new and more general achievability bounds for random coding schemes under maximal or average probability of error requirements. Such general bounds are then applied to covert communication in AWGN channels where codewords are generated from Gaussian distribution while meeting the maximal power constraint. Further comparison is made …
A joint scheme for the channel coding and spectrum spreading communication system is proposed in this paper. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the joint proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the case of channel coding scheme without spectrum spreading. We employ a single Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) code for the both channel coding and direct sequence spectrum spreading. We show that the BER performance is significantly improved while the complexity does not increase too. The philosophy behind this achievement is that the spectrum spreading techniques provide the ability of c…
Non-malleable codes protect against an adversary who can tamper with the coded message by using a tampering function in a specified function family, guaranteeing that the tampering result will only depend on the chosen function and not the coded message. The codes have been motivated for providing protection against tampering with hardware that stores the secret cryptographic keys, and have found significant attention in cryptography. Traditional Shannon model of communication systems assumes the communication channel is perfectly known to the transmitter and the receiver. Arbitrary Varying Ch…
We consider a joint source channel coding (JSCC) problem in which we desire to transmit an arbitrary memoryless source over an arbitrary additive channel. We propose a mismatched coding architecture that consists of Gaussian codebooks for both the source reproduction sequences and channel codewords. The natural nearest neighbor encoder and decoder, however, need to be judiciously modified to obtain the highest communication rates at finite blocklength. In particular, we consider a unequal error protection (UEP) scheme in which all sources are partitioned into disjoint power type classes. We al…
Let $W$ be a binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel with Shannon capacity $I(W)$ and fix any $α> 0$. We construct, for any sufficiently small $δ> 0$, binary linear codes of block length $O(1/δ^{2+α})$ and rate $I(W)-δ$ that enable reliable communication on $W$ with quasi-linear time encoding and decoding. Shannon's noisy coding theorem established the \emph{existence} of such codes (without efficient constructions or decoding) with block length $O(1/δ^2)$. This quadratic dependence on the gap $δ$ to capacity is known to be best possible. Our result thus yields a constructive version o…
In this short paper we bridge two seemingly unrelated sparse approximation topics: continuous sparse coding and low-rank approximations. We show that for a specific choice of continuous dictionary, linear systems with nuclear-norm regularization have the same solutions as a BLasso problem. Although this fact was already partially understood in the matrix case, we further show that for tensor data, using BLasso solvers for the low-rank approximation problem leads to a new branch of optimization methods yet vastly unexplored. In particular, the proposed Frank-Wolfe algorithm is showcased on an a…
Motivated by streaming applications with stringent delay constraints, we consider the design of online network coding algorithms with timely delivery guarantees. Assuming that the sender is providing the same data to multiple receivers over independent packet erasure channels, we focus on the case of perfect feedback and heterogeneous erasure probabilities. Based on a general analytical framework for evaluating the decoding delay, we show that existing ARQ schemes fail to ensure that receivers with weak channels are able to recover from packet losses within reasonable time. To overcome this pr…

In practice, since many communication networks are huge in scale, or complicated in structure, or even dynamic, the predesigned linear network codes based on the network topology is impossible even if the topological structure is known. Therefore, random linear network coding has been proposed as an acceptable coding technique for the case that the network topology cannot be utilized completely. Motivated by the fact that different network topological information can be obtained for different practical applications, we study the performance analysis of random linear network coding by analyzing…
In this paper, we study the problem of reducing the delay of downloading data from cloud storage systems by leveraging multiple parallel threads, assuming that the data has been encoded and stored in the clouds using fixed rate forward error correction (FEC) codes with parameters (n, k). That is, each file is divided into k equal-sized chunks, which are then expanded into n chunks such that any k chunks out of the n are sufficient to successfully restore the original file. The model can be depicted as a multiple-server queue with arrivals of data retrieving requests and a server corresponding …
Increasing data traffic demands over wireless spectrum have necessitated spectrum sharing and coexistence between heterogeneous systems such as radar and cellular communications systems. In this context, we specifically investigate the co-channel coexistence between an air traffic control (ATC) radar and a wide area cellular communication (comms) system. We present a comprehensive characterization and analysis of interference caused by the comms system on the ATC radar with respect to multiple parameters such as radar range, protection radius around the radar, and radar antenna elevation angle…
The introduction of 5G has changed the wireless communication industry. Whereas previous generations of cellular technology are mainly based on communication for people, the wireless industry is discovering that 5G may be an era of communications that is mainly focused on machine-to-machine communication. The application of Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication in factory automation is an area of great interest as it unlocks potential applications that traditional wired communications did not allow. In particular, the decrease in the inter-device distance has led to the discussion of coding…
To fully support vertical industries, 5G and its corresponding channel coding are expected to meet requirements of different applications. However, for applications of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) such as URLLC, the transmission latency is required to be much shorter than that in eMBB. Therefore, the resulting channel code length reduces drastically. In this case, the traditional 1-D channel coding suffers a lot from the performance degradation and fails to deliver strong reliability with very low latency. To remove this bottleneck, new channel coding scheme beyond the existing 1-D one is in urgent …

The accumulation of litter and plastic debris at the seafloor and the bottom of rivers are extremely harmful for the aquatic life. We propose a solution for this problem using a team of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to exchange the recorded video in order to reconstruct the seafloor regions of interest. However, underwater video transmission is a challen…
