Protecting against link failures in communication networks is essential to increase robustness, accessibility, and reliability of data transmission. Recently, network coding has been proposed as a solution to provide agile and cost efficient network protection against link failures, which does not require data rerouting, or packet retransmission. To achieve this, separate paths have to be provisioned to carry encoded packets, hence requiring either the addition of extra links, or reserving some of the resources for this purpose. In this paper, we propose network protection codes against a single link failure using network coding, where a separate path using reserved links is not needed. In this case portions of the link capacities are used to carry the encoded packets.
The scheme is extended to protect against multiple link failures and can be implemented at an overlay layer. Although this leads to reducing the network capacity, the network capacity reduction is asymptotically small in most cases of practical interest. We demonstrate that such network protection codes are equivalent to error correcting codes for erasure channels. Finally, we study the encoding and decoding operations of such codes over the binary field.
Link and node failures are two common fundamental problems that affect operational networks. Protection of communication networks against such failures is essential for maintaining network reliability and performance. Network protection codes (NPC) are proposed to protect operational networks against link and node failures. Furthermore, encoding and decoding operations of such codes are well developed over binary and finite fields. Finding network topologies, practical scenarios, and limits on graphs applicable for NPC are of interest. In this paper, we establish limits on network protection d…
In this paper we develop network protection strategies against a single link failure in optical networks. The motivation behind this work is the fact that $%70$ of all available links in an optical network suffers from a single link failure. In the proposed protection strategies, denoted NPS-I and NPS-II, we deploy network coding and reduced capacity on the working paths to provide a backup protection path that will carry encoded data from all sources. In addition, we provide implementation aspects and how to deploy the proposed strategies in case of an optical network with $n$ disjoint workin…
In this paper we develop network protection schemes against two link failures in optical networks. The motivation behind this work is the fact that the majority of all available links in an optical network suffer from single and double link failures. In the proposed network protection schemes, NPS2-I and NPS2-II, we deploy network coding and reduced capacity on the working paths to provide backup protection paths. In addition, we demonstrate the encoding and decoding aspects of the proposed schemes.
The enormous increase in the usage of communication networks has made protection against node and link failures essential in the deployment of reliable networks. To prevent loss of data due to node failures, a network protection strategy is proposed that aims to withstand such failures. Particularly, a protection strategy against any single node failure is designed for a given network with a set of $n$ disjoint paths between senders and receivers. Network coding and reduced capacity are deployed in this strategy without adding extra working paths to the readily available connection paths. This…
We propose a network-coding based scheme to protect multiple bidirectional unicast connections against adversarial errors and failures in a network. The network consists of a set of bidirectional primary path connections that carry the uncoded traffic. The end nodes of the bidirectional connections are connected by a set of shared protection paths that provide the redundancy required for protection. Such protection strategies are employed in the domain of optical networks for recovery from failures. In this work we consider the problem of simultaneous protection against adversarial errors and …
Agile recovery from link failures in autonomic communication networks is essential to increase robustness, accessibility, and reliability of data transmission. However, this must be done with the least amount of protection resources, while using simple management plane functionality. Recently, network coding has been proposed as a solution to provide agile and cost efficient network self-healing against link failures, in a manner that does not require data rerouting, packet retransmission, or failure localization, hence leading to simple control and management planes. To achieve this, separate…
In this work we explore possibilities for coding when information worlds have different (semantic) values. We introduce a loss function that expresses the overall performance of a coding scheme for discrete channels and exchange the usual goal of minimizing the error probability to that of minimizing the expected loss. In this environment we explore the possibilities of using poset-decoders to make a message-wise unequal error protection (UEP), where the most valuable information is protected by placing in its proximity information words that differ by small valued information. Similar definit…
This paper introduces a network coding-based protection scheme against single and multiple link failures. The proposed strategy ensures that in a connection, each node receives two copies of the same data unit: one copy on the working circuit, and a second copy that can be extracted from linear combinations of data units transmitted on a shared protection path. This guarantees instantaneous recovery of data units upon the failure of a working circuit. The strategy can be implemented at an overlay layer, which makes its deployment simple and scalable. While the proposed strategy is similar in s…
Link and node failures are common two fundamental problems that affect operational networks. Hence, protection of communication networks is essential to increase their reliability, performance, and operations. Much research work has been done to protect against link and node failures, and to provide reliable solutions based on pre-defined provision or dynamic restoration of the domain. In this paper we develop network protection strategies against multiple link failures using network coding and joint capacities. In these strategies, the source nodes apply network coding for their transmitted d…
Taking into account of both the huge computing power of intruders and untrusted cloud servers, we develop an enhanced secure pseudonym scheme to protect the privacy of mobile cloud data. To face the huge computing power challenge, we develop an unconditionally secure lightweight network coding pseudonym scheme. For the privacy issue of untrusted cloud server, we further design a two tier network coding to decouple the stored mobile cloud data from the owner pseudonyms. Therefore, our proposed network coding based pseudonym scheme can simultaneously defend against attackers from both outside an…
From currency to cloud storage systems, the continuous rise of the blockchain technology is moving various information systems towards decentralization. Blockchain-based decentralized storage networks (DSNs) offer significantly higher privacy and lower costs to customers compared with centralized cloud storage associated with specific vendors. Coding is required in order to retrieve data stored on failing components. While coding solutions for centralized storage have been intensely studied, topology-aware coding for heterogeneous DSNs have not yet been discussed. In this paper, we propose a j…
In this paper, we propose an open-loop unequal-error-protection querying policy based on superposition coding for the noisy 20 questions problem. In this problem, a player wishes to successively refine an estimate of the value of a continuous random variable by posing binary queries and receiving noisy responses. When the queries are designed non-adaptively as a single block and the noisy responses are modeled as the output of a binary symmetric channel the 20 questions problem can be mapped to an equivalent problem of channel coding with unequal error protection (UEP). A new non-adaptive quer…
Coding and testing schemes for binary hypothesis testing over noisy networks are proposed and their corresponding type-II error exponents are derived. When communication is over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC), our scheme combines Shimokawa-Han-Amari's hypothesis testing scheme with Borade's unequal error protection (UEP) for channel coding. A separate source channel coding architecture is employed. The resulting exponent is optimal for the newly introduced class of \emph{generalized testing against conditional independence}. When communication is over a MAC or a BC, our scheme combines hy…
Linear network coding transmits information in terms of a basis of a vector space and the information is received as a basis of a possible altered vectorspace. Ralf Koetter and Frank R. Kschischang in Coding for errors and erasures in random network coding (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol.54, no.8, pp. 3579-3591,2008) introduced a metric on the set af vector-spaces and showed that a minimal distance decoder for this metric achieves correct decoding if the dimension of the intersection of the transmitted and received vector-space is sufficiently large. From the Veronese varieties w…
In practice, since many communication networks are huge in scale or complicated in structure even dynamic, the predesigned network codes based on the network topology is impossible even if the topological structure is known. Therefore, random linear network coding was proposed as an acceptable coding technique. In this paper, we further study the performance of random linear network coding by analyzing the failure probabilities at sink node for different knowledge of network topology and get some tight and asymptotically tight upper bounds of the failure probabilities. In particular, the worst…
Random linear network coding is a feasible encoding tool for network coding, specially for the non-coherent network, and its performance is important in theory and application. In this letter, we study the performance of random linear network coding for the well-known butterfly network by analyzing the failure probabilities. We determine the failure probabilities of random linear network coding for the well-known butterfly network and the butterfly network with channel failure probability p.
This paper considers a multi-source multi-relay network, in which relay nodes employ a coding scheme based on random linear network coding on source packets and generate coded packets. If a destination node collects enough coded packets, it can recover the packets of all source nodes. The links between source-to-relay nodes and relay-to-destination nodes are modeled as packet erasure channels. Improved bounds on the probability of decoding failure are presented, which are markedly close to simulation results and notably better than previous bounds. Examples demonstrate the tightness and useful…
Multipath interference is an ubiquitous phenomenon in modern communication systems. The conventional way to compensate for this effect is to equalize the channel by estimating its impulse response by transmitting a set of training symbols. The primary drawback to this type of approach is that it can be unreliable if the channel is changing rapidly. In this paper, we show that randomly encoding the signal can protect it against channel uncertainty when the channel is sparse. Before transmission, the signal is mapped into a slightly longer codeword using a random matrix. From the received signal…
In practice, since many communication networks are huge in scale, or complicated in structure, or even dynamic, the predesigned linear network codes based on the network topology is impossible even if the topological structure is known. Therefore, random linear network coding has been proposed as an acceptable coding technique for the case that the network topology cannot be utilized completely. Motivated by the fact that different network topological information can be obtained for different practical applications, we study the performance analysis of random linear network coding by analyzing…
In this paper we close the gap between end-to-end diversity coding and intra-session network coding for unicast connections resilient against single link failures. In particular, we show that coding operations are sufficient to perform at the source and receiver if the user data can be split into at most two parts over the filed GF(2). Our proof is purely combinatorial and based on standard graph and network flow techniques. It is a linear time construction that defines the route of subflows A, B and A+B between the source and destination nodes. The proposed resilient flow decomposition method…
In this paper, an integer programming approach is introduced to construct Unequal Error Protection (UEP) codes for multiuser broadcast channels. We show that the optimal codes can be constructed that satisfy the integer programming bound. Based on the bound, we compute asymptotic code rate and perform throughput analysis for the degraded broadcast channel.
In large scale distributed storage systems (DSS) deployed in cloud computing, correlated failures resulting in simultaneous failure (or, unavailability) of blocks of nodes are common. In such scenarios, the stored data or a content of a failed node can only be reconstructed from the available live nodes belonging to the available blocks. To analyze the resilience of the system against such block failures, this work introduces the framework of Block Failure Resilient (BFR) codes, wherein the data (e.g., a file in DSS) can be decoded by reading out from a same number of codeword symbols (nodes) …
We consider communication over a noisy network under randomized linear network coding. Possible error mechanism include node- or link- failures, Byzantine behavior of nodes, or an over-estimate of the network min-cut. Building on the work of Koetter and Kschischang, we introduce a probabilistic model for errors. We compute the capacity of this channel and we define an error-correction scheme based on random sparse graphs and a low-complexity decoding algorithm. By optimizing over the code degree profile, we show that this construction achieves the channel capacity in complexity which is jointl…
Data storage systems are more reliable than their individual components. In order to build highly reliable systems out of less reliable parts, systems introduce redundancy. In replicated systems, objects are simply copied several times with each copy residing on a different physical device. While such an approach is simple and direct, more elaborate approaches such as erasure coding can achieve equivalent levels of data protection while using less redundancy. This report examines the trade-offs in cost and performance between replicated and erasure encoded storage systems.
Because of their capacity-approaching performance, graph-based codes have a wide range of applications, including communications and storage. In these codes, unequal error protection (UEP) can offer performance gains with limited rate loss. Recent empirical results in magnetic recording (MR) systems show that extra protection for the parity bits of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code via constrained coding results in significant density gains. In particular, when UEP is applied via more reliable parity bits, higher fidelity messages of parity bits are spread to all bits by message passing a…
Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) provides a theoretically efficient method for coding. Some of its practical drawbacks are the complexity of decoding and the overhead due to the coding vectors. For computationally weak and battery-driven platforms, these challenges are particular important. In this work, we consider the coding variant Perpetual codes which are sparse, non-uniform and the coding vectors have a compact representation. The sparsity allows for fast encoding and decoding, and the non-uniform protection of symbols enables recoding where the produced symbols are indistinguishable …
MDS codes are elegant constructions in coding theory and have mode important applications in cryptography, network coding, distributed data storage, communication systems et. In this study, a method is given which MDS codes are lifted to a higher finite field. The presented method satisfies the protection of the distance and creating the MDS code over the $F_q$ by using MDS code over $F_p.$
Large-scale machine learning and data mining methods routinely distribute computations across multiple agents to parallelize processing. The time required for computation at the agents is affected by the availability of local resources giving rise to the "straggler problem" in which the computation results are held back by unresponsive agents. For this problem, linear coding of the matrix sub-blocks can be used to introduce resilience toward straggling. The Parameter Server (PS) utilizes a channel code and distributes the matrices to the workers for multiplication. It then produces an approxim…
Traditional network security protocols depend mainly on developing cryptographic schemes and on using biometric methods. These have led to several network security protocols that are unbreakable based on difficulty of solving untractable mathematical problems such as factoring large integers. In this paper, Security of Networks Employing Encoding and Decoding (SNEED) is developed to mitigate single and multiple link attacks. Network coding and shared capacity among the working paths are used to provide data protection and data integrity against network attackers and eavesdroppers. SNEED can be…
We propose a source/channel duality in the exponential regime, where success/failure in source coding parallels error/correctness in channel coding, and a distortion constraint becomes a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) threshold. We establish this duality by first deriving exact exponents for lossy coding of a memoryless source P, at distortion D, for a general i.i.d. codebook distribution Q, for both encoding success (R < R(P,Q,D)) and failure (R > R(P,Q,D)). We then turn to maximum likelihood (ML) decoding over a memoryless channel P with an i.i.d. input Q, and show that if we substitute P=QP, Q=…
We investigate the privacy of two approaches to (biometric) template protection: Helper Data Systems and Sparse Ternary Coding with Ambiguization. In particular, we focus on a privacy property that is often overlooked, namely how much leakage exists about one specific binary property of one component of the feature vector. This property is e.g. the sign or an indicator that a threshold is exceeded. We provide evidence that both approaches are able to protect such sensitive binary variables, and discuss how system parameters need to be set.
In this work, we present a concatenated repetition-polar coding scheme that is aimed at applications requiring highly unbalanced unequal bit-error protection, such as the Beam Interlock System of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Even though this concatenation scheme is simple, it reveals significant challenges that may be encountered when designing a concatenated scheme that uses a polar code as an inner code, such as error correlation and unusual decision log-likelihood ratio distributions. We explain and analyze these challenges and we propose two ways to overcome them.
Concurrent coding is an unconventional encoding technique that simultaneously provides protection against noise, burst errors and interference. This simple-to-understand concept is investigated by distinguishing 2 types of code, open and closed, with the majority of the investigation concentrating on closed codes. Concurrent coding is shown to possess an inherent method of synchronisation thus requiring no additional synchronisation signals to be added. This enables an isolated codeword transmission to be synchronised and decoded in the presence of noise and burst errors. Comparisons are made …
A message composed of packets is transmitted using erasure and channel coding over a fading channel with no feedback. For this scenario, the paper explores the trade-off between the redundancies allocated to the packet-level erasure code and the channel code, along with an objective of a low probability of failure to recover the message. To this end, we consider a fading model that we term proportional-diversity block fading (PD block fading). For a fixed overall code rate and transmit power, we formulate an optimization problem to numerically find the optimal channel-coding rate (and thus the…
In this paper, we introduce a model of a single-failure locally recoverable distributed storage system. This model appears to give rise to a problem seemingly dual of the well-studied index coding problem. The relation between the dimensions of an optimal index code and optimal distributed storage code of our model has been established in this paper. We also show some extensions to vector codes.
A joint scheme for the channel coding and spectrum spreading communication system is proposed in this paper. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the joint proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the case of channel coding scheme without spectrum spreading. We employ a single Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) code for the both channel coding and direct sequence spectrum spreading. We show that the BER performance is significantly improved while the complexity does not increase too. The philosophy behind this achievement is that the spectrum spreading techniques provide the ability of c…
In this paper, we consider designing low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded modulation systems to achieve unequal error protection (UEP). We propose a new UEP approach by partial superposition transmission called UEP-by-PST. In the UEP-by-PST system, the information sequence is distinguished as two parts, the more important data (MID) and the less important data (LID), both of which are coded with LDPC codes. The codeword that corresponds to the MID is superimposed on the codeword that corresponds to the LID. The system performance can be analyzed by using discretized density evolution. Also pr…
This paper studies the problem of transmitting multiple independent layered video streams over single-hop wireless networks using network coding (NC). We combine feedback-free random linear NC (RLNC) with unequal error protection (UEP) and our goal is to investigate the benefits of coding across streams, i.e. inter session NC. To this end, we present a transmission scheme that in addition to mixing packets of different layers of each stream (intra-session NC), mixes packets of different streams as well. Then, we propose the analytical formulation of the layer decoding probabilities for each us…
A novel fountain coding scheme has been introduced. The scheme consists of a parallel concatenation of a MDS block code with a LRFC code, both constructed over the same field, $F_q$. The performance of the concatenated fountain coding scheme has been analyzed through derivation of tight bounds on the probability of decoding failure as a function of the overhead. It has been shown how the concatenated scheme performs as well as LRFC codes in channels characterized by high erasure probabilities, whereas they provide failure probabilities lower by several orders of magnitude at moderate/low erasu…
This paper deals with superposition coding for cooperative broadcasting in the case of two coordinated source nodes, as introduced in the seminal work of Bergmans and Cover in 1974. A scheme is introduced for two classes of destination (or relay) nodes: Close nodes and far nodes, as ranked by their spatial distances to the pair of transmitting nodes. Two linear codes are combined using the (u,u+v)-construction devised by Plotkin to construct two-level linear unequal error protection (LUEP) codes. However, instead of binary addition of subcode codewords in the source encoder, here modulated sub…
In order to accommodate the ever-growing data from various, possibly independent, sources and the dynamic nature of data usage rates in practical applications, modern cloud data storage systems are required to be scalable, flexible, and heterogeneous. The recent rise of the blockchain technology is also moving various information systems towards decentralization to achieve high privacy at low costs. While codes with hierarchical locality have been intensively studied in the context of centralized cloud storage due to their effectiveness in reducing the average reading time, those for decentral…
Erasure codes are widely used in today's storage systems to cope with failures. Most of them use the finite field arithmetic. In this paper, we propose an implementation and a coding speed evaluation of an original method called PYRIT (PolYnomial RIng Transform) to perform operations between elements of a finite field into a bigger ring by using fast transforms between these two structures. Working in such a ring is much easier than working in a finite field. Firstly, it reduces the coding complexity by design. Secondly, it allows simple but efficient \texttt{xor}-based implementations by unro…
