We prove several generic existence results for infinitely many periodic orbits of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms or Reeb flows. For instance, we show that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a complex projective space or Grassmannian generically has infinitely many periodic orbits. We also consider symplectomorphisms of the two-torus with irrational flux. We show that such a symplectomorphism necessarily has infinitely many periodic orbits whenever it has one and all periodic points are non-degenerate.
We show that the presence of one non-degenerate, non-contractible periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian on the standard symplectic torus implies the existence of infinitely many simple non-contractible periodic orbits.
In this paper, we show the existence of non contractible periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems defined on $T^*\T^n$ separating two Lagrangian tori under certain cone assumption. Our result answers a question of Polterovich in \cite{P} in a sharp way. As an application, we find periodic orbits of almost all the homotopy types on a dense set of energy level in Lorentzian type mechanical Hamiltonian systems defined on $T^*\T^2$. This solves a problem of Arnold in \cite{A}.
We prove that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed symplectic manifold equipped with an atoroidal symplectic form has simple non-contractible periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period, provided that the diffeomorphism has a non-degenerate (or even isolated and homologically non-trivial) periodic orbit with non-zero homology class and the set of one-periodic orbits in that class is finite.
We describe a variational approach to a notion of Hamiltonian delay equations. Our delay Hamiltonians are of product form. We consider several examples. For closed symplectically aspherical symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ we prove that for generic delay Hamiltonians the number of 1-periodic solutions of the Hamiltonian delay equation is at least the sum of the Betti numbers of $M$, extending the proof of the Arnold conjecture to the case with delay.
Inspired by the techniques of Givental and Théret, we provide a proof with generating functions of a recent result of Ginzburg-Gürel concerning the periodic points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}\text{P}^d$. For instance, we are able to prove that fixed points of pseudo-rotations are isolated as invariant sets or that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point has infinitely many periodic points.
According to the Arnold conjectures and Floer's proofs, there are non-trivial lower bounds for the number of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian differential equations on a closed symplectic manifold whose symplectic form vanishes on spheres. We use an iterated graph construction and Lagrangian Floer homology to show that these lower bounds also hold for certain Hamiltonian delay equations.
We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the Euclidean space, generated by compactly supported time-dependent perturbations of hyperbolic quadratic forms. We prove that, under some natural assumptions, such a diffeomorphism must have simple periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period when it has fixed points which are not necessary from a homological perspective.
The main theme of this paper is the connection between the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits for a Hamiltonian system and the behavior of its action or index spectrum under iterations. We use the action and index spectra to show that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed, rational manifold with zero first Chern class has infinitely many periodic orbits and that, for a general rational manifold, the number of geometrically distinct periodic orbits is bounded from below by the ratio of the minimal Chern number and half of the dimension. These generalizations of the Conley conject…
For many classes of symplectic manifolds, the Hamiltonian flow of a function with sufficiently large variation must have a fast periodic orbit. This principle is the base of the notion of Hofer-Zehnder capacity and some other symplectic invariants and leads to numerous results concerning existence of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian flows. Along these lines, we show that given a negatively curved manifold M, a neigbhourhood U of M in the cotangent bundle, a sufficiently small magnetic field and a non-trivial free homotopy class of loops, then the magnetic flow of a Hamiltonian with big enough va…
The first author introduced a relative symplectic capacity $C$ for a symplectic manifold $(N,ω_N)$ and its subset $X$ which measures the existence of non-contractible periodic trajectories of Hamiltonian isotopies on the product of $N$ with the annulus $A_R=(R,R)\times\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$. In the present paper, we give an exact computation of the capacity $C$ of the $2n$-torus $\mathbb{T}^{2n}$ relative to a Lagrangian submanifold $\mathbb{T}^n$ which implies the existence of non-contractible Hamiltonian periodic trajectories on $A_R\times\mathbb{T}^{2n}$. Moreover, we give a lower bound on …
We study Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds with non-contractible periodic orbits. In a variety of settings, we show that the presence of one non-contractible periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed toroidally monotone or toroidally negative monotone symplectic manifold implies the existence of infinitely many non-contractible periodic orbits in a specific collection of free homotopy classes. The main new ingredient in the proofs of these results is a filtration of Floer homology by the so-called augmented action. This action is independent of capping…
For Hamiltonian flows we establish the existence of periodic orbits on a sequence of level sets approaching a Bott-nondegenerate symplectic extremum of the Hamiltonian. As a consequence, we show that a charge on a compact manifold with a nondegenerate (i.e. symplectic) magnetic field has periodic orbits on a sequence of energy levels converging to zero.
We prove that either there exists at least one hamilton periodic orbit in a given energy close smooth hypersurface or there exist at least two hamilton periodic orbits in a near-by energy close smooth hypersurface. More general results also hold.
The present paper is a review of counterexamples to the ``Hamiltonian Seifert conjecture'' or, more generally, of examples of Hamiltonian systems having no periodic orbits on a compact energy level. We begin with the discussion of the ``classical'' and volume--preserving Seifert conjectures. Then a construction of counterexamples to the Hamiltonian Seifert conjecture in dimensions greater than or equal to six is outlined, mainly following the method introduced by the author of the paper. The Hamiltonian version of Seifert's theorem is also stated. A list of all known at this moment examples an…
Hamiltonian dynamical systems tend to have infinitely many periodic orbits. For example, for a broad class of symplectic manifolds almost all levels of a proper smooth Hamiltonian carry periodic orbits. The Hamiltonian Seifert conjecture is the existence problem for regular compact energy levels without periodic orbits. Very little is known about how large the set of regular energy values without periodic orbits can be. For instance, in all known examples of Hamiltonian flows on linear spaces such energy values form a discrete set, whereas ``almost existence theorems'' only require this set to…
We study absolutely periodic points and trajectories of Hamiltonian systems. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient for a Hamiltonian system to have the following property: if there exists one absolutely periodic trajectory then all trajectories are periodic with the same period.
We prove an index theorem for families of linear periodic Hamiltonian systems, which is reminiscent of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for selfadjoint elliptic operators. For the special case of one-parameter families, we compare our theorem with a classical result of Salamon and Zehnder. Finally, we use the index theorem to study bifurcation of branches of periodic solutions for families of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.
We prove the existence of infinitely many periodic points of symplectomorphisms isotopic to the identity if they admit at least one (non-contractible) hyperbolic periodic orbit and satisfy some condition on its flux. The obtained periodic points correspond to periodic orbits whose free homotopy classes are formed by iterations of the hyperbolic periodic orbit. Our result is proved for a certain class of closed symplectic manifolds and the main tool we use is a variation of Floer theory for non-contractible periodic orbits and symplectomorphisms, the Floer-Novikov theory. For a certain class of…
Let C be the class of compact 2n-dimensional symplectic manifolds M for which the first or (n-1) Chern class vanish. We point out an integer optimization problem to find a lower bound B(n) on the number of equilibrium points of non-Hamiltonian symplectic periodic flows on manifolds M in C. As a consequence, we confirm in dimensions 2n in {8,10,12,14,18,20, 22} a conjecture for unitary manifolds made by Kosniowski in 1979 for the subclass C.
In this paper we produce a lower bound for the number of periodic orbits of certain Hamiltonian vector fields near Bott-nondegenerate symplectic critical submanifolds. This result is then related to the problem of finding closed orbits of the motion of a charged low energy particle on a Riemannian manifold under the influence of a magnetic field
In this paper we prove a lower bound for the least number of one-periodic solutions of nondegenerate locally Hamiltonian equations on compact symplectic manifolds in terms of the Betti numbers of the Novikov homology associated to the Calabi invariant of the locally Hamiltonian equations. Our result improves lower bounds obtained by Lê-Ono and Ono for the least number of nondegenerate locally Hamiltonian symplectic fixed points. Our result also generalizes the homological Arnold conjecture proved by Fukaya-Ono and Liu-Tian.
A symmetric periodic orbit is a special kind of periodic orbit that can also be regarded as a Lagrangian intersection point. Therefore it has two Maslov indices whose difference is the Hormander index. In this paper we provide a formula for the Hormander index of a symmetric periodic orbit and its iterates in terms of Chebyshev polynomials.
We calculate the Riemann-Roch number of some of the pentagon spaces defined in [Klyachko,Kapovich-Millson,HK1]. Using this, we show that while the regular pentagon space is diffeomorphic to a toric variety, even symplectomorphic to one under arbitrarily small perturbations of its symplectic structure, it does not admit a symplectic circle action. In particular, within the cohomology classes of symplectic structures, the subset admitting a circle action is not closed.
All principal orbits of the standard Hamiltonian $T^n$-action on the complex projective space ${\mathbb C}P^n$ are Lagrangian tori.In this article, we prove that most of them are not volume minimizing under Hamiltonian isotopies of ${\mathbb C}P^n$ if the complex dimension $n$ is greater than two, although they are Hamiltonian minimal and Hamiltonian stable.
We consider a natural class of time-periodic infinite-dimensional nonlinear Hamiltonian systems modelling the interaction of a classical mechanical system of particles with a scalar wave field. When the field is defined on a space torus $\mathbb{T}^d=\mathbb{R}^d/(2π\mathbb{Z})^d$ and the coordinates of the particles are constrained to a submanifold $Q\subset\mathbb{T}^d$, we prove that the number of $T$-periodic solutions of the coupled Hamiltonian particle-field system is bounded from below by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cuplength of the space of contractible loops in $Q$, provided that the square of…
