In order to measure the mass of the eta meson with high accuracy using the d+p -> 3He+eta reaction, the momentum of the circulating deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Juelich has to be determined with unprecedented precision. This has been achieved by studying the spin dynamics of the polarized deuteron beam. By depolarizing the beam through the use of an artificially induced spin resonance, it was possible to evaluate its momentum p with a precision of dp/p < 10-4 for a momentum of roughly 3 GeV/c. Different possible sources of error in the application of the spin resonance method are discussed in detail and its possible use during a standard experiment is considered.
Below we summarize presentations, discussions and general conclusions of the Workshop session on "Beam Dynamics Issues". Major subjects include effects due to synchrotron radiation (SR), cryogenic loads, electron cloud, impedances, intra-beam scattering (IBS) and beam-beam interactions.
The possible use of open-cell conductive foams in high synchrotron radiation particle accelerator beam liners is considered. Available materials and modeling tools are reviewed, potential pros and cons are discussed, and preliminary conclusions are drawn.
With respect to a "hot", non-crystallized beam the synchrotron radiation of a cold crystallized beam is considerably modified. We predict suppression of synchrotron radiation emitted by a crystallized beam in a storage ring. We also propose experiments to detect this effect.
The proposed High-Energy LHC project presents an unusual combination of strong synchrotron radiation (SR) damping and intrabeam scattering (IBS), which is not seen in present-day hadron colliders. The subject of investigation reported in this paper was the simulation of beam-beam effect for the HE-LHC parameters. Parameters of SR and IBS are calculated, and the luminosity evolution is simulated in the absence of beambeam interaction. Then, a weak-strong numerical simulation is used to predict the effect of beam-beam interaction on particle losses and emittance evolution.
An interferometer system and an imaging system using visible synchrotron radiation (SR) have been installed in HLS II storage ring. Simulations of these two systems are given using Synchrotron Radiation Workshop(SRW) code. With these two systems, the beam energy spread and the beam emittance can be measured. A detailed description of these two systems and the measurement method is given in this paper. The measurement results of beam size, emittance and energy spread are given at the end.
In DAΦNE, the Frascati e+/e- collider, the crab waist collision scheme has been successfully implemented in 2008 and 2009. During the collision operations for Siddharta experiment, an unusual synchrotron damping effect has been observed. Indeed, with the longitudinal feedback switched off, the positron beam becomes unstable with beam currents in the order of 200-300 mA. The longitudinal instability is damped by bringing the positron beam in collision with a high current electron beam (~2A). Besides, we have observed a shift of \approx 600Hz in the residual synchrotron sidebands. Precise measur…
For booster synchrotrons, like the SIS at GSI, space charge is one of the main intensity limitations. At injection energy the space charge induced tune spreads in booster synchrotrons are large, reaching up to 0.5 and the ramping times are typically short. We study the effect of several localized electron lenses distributed equally around the circumference in order to compensate for the transverse space charge force.
Beam quality preservation during transport of high-brightness electron beams is of general concern in the design of modern accelerators. Methods to manage incoherent synchrotron radiation (ISR) have been in place for decades; as beam brightness has improved coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and the microbunching instability (uBI) have emerged as performance limitations. We apply the compensation analysis of diMitri, Cornacchia, and Spampinati - as previously used by Borland - to the design of transport systems for use with low-emittance beams, and find that appropriately configured second o…
Crossing a horizontal nonlinear resonance is the approach that can be used to split a beam in several beamlets with the goal to perform multi-turn extraction from a circular particle accelerator. Such an approach has been successfully implemented in the CERN Proton Synchrotron and is used routinely for the production of high-intensity proton beams for fixed-target physics at the Super Proton Synchrotron. Recently, thanks to the deployment of diamond detectors, originally installed to monitor the beam losses at extraction, it has been possible to measure the horizontal beam emittance of the spl…
It is important to have experimental methods to estimate the maximum beam intensity for the Fermilab Booster as objective input into long term program commitments. An important existing limit is set by the available rf power. This limit is difficult to set a priori because the real longitudinal impedance is not well known. The synchrotron phase at transition crossing was measured using both the mountain range plot and the direct phase measurement of the RF accelerating voltage relative to the beam, and results were consistent. They were applied to predict 6E12 maximum Booster beam intensity wi…
Some high-energy experiments have suffered from synchrotron-radiation background. As a measure, we have developed a new calculation method of synchrotron radiation based on a real beam orbit, aiming at quantitative estimations and the construction of a possible alarm system for the background. An explanation and a demonstration of our method are given.
The low-level RF system (LLRF) generates the drive sent to the high-power equipment. In synchrotrons, it uses signals from beam pick-ups (radial and longitudinal) to minimize the beam losses and provide a beam with reproducible parameters (intensity, bunch length, average momentum and momentum spread) for either the next accelerator or the physicists. This presentation is the first of three: it considers synchrotrons in the lowintensity regime where the voltage in the RF cavity is not influenced by the beam. As the author is in charge of the LHC LLRF and currently commissioning it, much materi…
We investigate influence on the storage ring beam dynamics of the coherent Synchrotron Radiation (SR) self fields produced by an electron bunch. We show that the maximum energy gain in the RF cavity must far exceed the energy loss of electrons due to the coherent SR.

Theory and measurement of spatial coherence of synchrotron radiation beams are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to simple relationships between electron beam characteristics and far field properties of the light beam.
Slow extraction of bunched beams is widely used for mitigating the formation of micro structures due to ripples of the accelerator magnets power supplies on the extracted beam which is also referred to as spill. That helps, in particular, experiments with slow detectors or with low extraction rates. Furthermore, this technique is widely used for avoiding long gaps in the spill measured in ionisation chambers which in turn would trigger interlocks. On the other hand, the bunches create spill structures on time scales defined by the rf frequency. In addition, macroscopic spill structures of dura…
Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction meth…
A novel polarimeter based on the asymmetry in the spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will make for a fine addition to the existing Møller and Compton polarimeters. The spin light polarimeter consists of a set of wiggler magnet along the beam that generate synchrotron radiation. The spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will be measured by ionization chambers. The up-down (below and above the wiggle) spacial asymmetry in the transverse plain is used to quantify the polarization of the beam. As a part of the design process, effects of a realistic wiggler magnetic field and an …
A longitudinal beam properties, data acquisition system has been commissioned to operate in the Fermilab booster ring. This system captures real time information including beam synchronous phase, bunch length, and coupled bunch instability amplitudes as the beam is accelerated from 400 MeV to 8 GeV in 33 ms. The system uses an off-the-shelf Tektronix oscilloscope running Labview software and a synchronous pulse generator. This paper describes the hardware configuration and the software configuration used to optimize the data processing rate.
Detrimental beam dynamics effects limit performance of high intensity rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) such as the 8 GeV proton Fermilab Booster. Here we report the results of comprehensive experimental studies of various beam intensity dependent effects in the Booster. In the first part, we report the dependencies of the Booster beam intensity losses on the total number of protons per pulse and on key operational parameters such as the machine tunes and chromaticities. Then we cross-check two methods of the beam emittance measurements (the multi-wires proportional chambers and the ionization …
A beam profile monitor utilizing visible synchrotron radiation (SR) from a bending magnet has been designed and installed in Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring (CESR). The monitor employs a double-slit interferometer to measure both the horizontal and vertical beam sizes over a wide range of beam currents. By varying the separation of the slits, beam sizes ranging from 50 to 500 um can be measured with a resolution of approximately 5 um. To measure larger beam size (> 500 um), direct imaging can be employed by rotating the double slits away from SR beam path. By imaging the pi-polarized co…
We study the modifications of synchrotron radiation of charges in a storage ring as they are cooled. The pair correlation lengths between the charges are manifest in the synchrotron radiation and coherence effects exist for wavelengths longer than the coherence lengths between the charges. Therefore the synchrotron radiation can be used as a diagnostic tool to determine the state (gas, liquid, crystal) of the charged plasma in the storage ring. We show also that the total power of the synchrotron radiation is enormously reduced for crystallized beams. This opens the possibility of accelerating…
The self-consistent nonlinear dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam interacting with its complete self-fields is a fundamental problem underpinning many of the accelerator design issues in high brightness beam applications, as well as the development of advanced accelerators. Particularly, synchrotron radiation induced effects in a magnetic dispersive beamline element can lead to collective beam instabilities and emittance growth. A novel beam dynamic code is developed based on a Lagrangian method for the calculation of the particles' radiation near-fields using wavefront/wavelet me…
A novel method for generating GigaGauss solenoidal field in laser-plasma bubble, using screw-shaped laser pulses, has been recently presented in arXiv:1604.01259 [physics.plasm-ph]. Such magnetic fields enable fast synchrotron radiation cooling of the beam emittance of laser-plasma accelerated leptons. This recent finding opens a novel approach for design of laser-plasma FELs or colliders, where the acceleration stages are interleaved with laser-plasma emittance cooling stages. In this concept paper we present an outline of how a staged plasma-acceleration FEL could look like and discuss furth…
We outline the design of beam experiments for the electron linac at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility and for the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), based on synchrotron light emitted by the electrons in bend dipoles, detected with gated microchannel-plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs). The system can be used both for beam diagnostics (e.g., beam intensity with full dynamic range, turn-by-turn beam vibrations, etc.) and for scientific experiments, such as the direct observation of the time structure of the radiation emitted by single electrons in a storage r…
Investigation of neutrino oscillations and rare meson decays are main physics goals of Project X. The successful physics outcome relies on the feasibility of high-intensity neutrino and meson (K+ and μ) beams. In order to meet this goal we propose accelerator system dominated by the synchrotrons (Option A) as a technologically easier and significantly more cost-effective alternative to the accelerator system dominated by the linear accelerators (Option B). The synchrotron-based accelerator system and its main components are outlined and the expected proton beam power for the neutrino and meson…
Longitudinal oscillations of bunched beams in synchrotrons have been analyzed by accelerator physicists for decades, and a closed theory is well-known [1]. The first modes of oscillation are the coherent dipole mode, quadrupole mode, and sextupole mode. Of course, these modes of oscillation are included in the general theory, but for developing RF control systems, it is useful to work with simplified models. Therefore, several specific models are analyzed in the paper at hand. They are useful for the design of closed-loop control systems in order to reach an optimum performance with respect to…
The dipole mode synchrotron frequency is a basic beam parameter; it and a few similarly basic quantities measured at small time intervals serve to characterize the longitudinal beam dynamics throughout the acceleration cycle. The effective accelerating voltage, in conjunction with the amount of rf voltage required for the acceleration, is important for the estimate of the beam energy loss per turn. The dipole mode frequency can be used to obtain the effective accelerating rf voltage, providing that it can be measured precisely. The synchrotron frequency measured from the synchrotron phase dete…
The paper gives an overview of the particle dynamics in synchrotrons and storage rings. Both, transverse as well as the longitudinal plane are described in linear approximation. The main emphasis is to give an introduction into the basic concepts and to allow the reader to deduce the main parameters of the machine, based on some simple scaling laws.
Electron beam stabilization in a synchrotron is a disturbance rejection problem, with hundreds of inputs and outputs, that is sampled at frequencies higher than $10$ kHz. In this feasibility study, we focus on the practical issues of an efficient implementation of model predictive control (MPC) for the heavily ill-conditioned plant of the electron beam stabilization problem. To obtain a tractable control problem that can be solved using only a few iterations of the fast gradient method, we investigate different methods for preconditioning the resulting optimization problem and relate our findi…
The possibilities of the extraction and collimation of a circulating beam by a new method due to the reflection of particles in crystals with axial orientation were experimentally investigated in the Fall-2010 run at the U_70 synchrotron. Such crystals have positive features, because the axial potential is five times larger than the planar potential. It has been shown that the collimation efficiency can reach 90% due to axial effects in the crystal. Losses of the circulating beam on a collimator have been reduced by several times; this makes it possible to suppress the muon jet near the steel …
In any hadron synchrotron, the half-integer resonance is among the strongest effects limiting the achievable maximum beam intensity. The heavy-ion superconducting synchrotron SIS100, currently under construction at GSI, should provide intense beams for the future FAIR experiments. Using SIS100 as an example, this paper develops a quantitative framework for characterizing the half-integer stop band for realistic, Gaussian-like distributed bunched beams. This study identifies the tune areas affected by the gradient-error-induced half-integer resonance for varying space charge strengths. A key in…
The timing system of SPring-8 booster synchrotron generates various timing signals concerning beam injection, acceleration from 1 GeV to 8 GeV and ejection. We have improved the timing system of the synchrotron giving it better stability and flexibility. This improvement results the other merits of advanced operations, for example, storing electron beam in the synchrotron, changing the injection cycle from 1 Hz to the slower frequency to increase the RF knock-out (RF-KO) operation period and ejecting the low energy beam during ramping up.
In the rapid cycling synchrotron of the China Spallation Neutron Source, the anti-correlated painting was adopted for the design scheme of the injection system. In the beam commissioning, with the optimization of the anti-correlated painting, the injection beam loss has been well controlled and the injection efficiency has exceeded 99%. Combined with other aspects of adjustments, the beam power on the target has reached 50 kW smoothly. In this paper, we have studied the injection optimization in the beam commissioning. Compared to the simulation results of the design scheme, the transverse beam…
The performance of synchrotron light facilities are strongly influenced by the photon beam bright- ness, that can be further increased by reducing the beam emittance. A Robinson Wiggler can be installed in a non-zero dispersion straight section to reduce the horizontal beam emittance. It is composed of an array of magnets of alternated polarities, whose both magnetic field and gradient are of opposite signs. It provides a compact solution to reduce by 50% the horizontal emittance. How- ever, it increases the energy spread by 40%. The concept of the Robinson Wiggler (RW) is described here, the …
A research complex for aerospace radiation effects research has been proposed in Harbin Institute of Technology. Its core part is a proton accelerator complex, which consists of a 10 MeV injector, a 300 MeV synchrotron and beam transport lines. The proton beam extracted from the synchrotron is utilized for the radiation effects research. Based on the conceptual design [1], the design study for optimizing the synchrotron has been done. A new lattice design was worked out, and the multi-turn injection and slow extraction system were optimized with the new lattice design. In order to improve the …
Tune identification - i.e. attribution of the spectral peak to a particular normal mode of oscillations - can present a significant difficulty in the presence of strong transverse coupling when the normal mode with a lower damping rate dominates spectra of Turn-by-Turn oscillations in both planes. The introduced earlier phased sum algorithm helped to recover the weaker normal mode signal from the noise, but by itself proved to be insufficient for automatic peak identification in the case of close phase advance distribution in both planes. To resolve this difficulty we modified the algorithm by…
Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) can play an important role by not only increasing the energy spread and emittance of a beam, but also leading to a potential instability. Previous studies of the CSR induced longitudinal instability were carried out for the CSR impedance due to dipole magnets. However, many storage rings include long wigglers where a large fraction of the synchrotron radiation is emitted. This includes high-luminosity factories such as DAPHNE, PEP-II, KEK-B, and CESR-C as well as the damping rings of future linear colliders. In this paper, the instability due to the CSR imp…
In this Letter, I report on a novel scheme for beam stacking without any beam emittance dilution using a barrier rf system in synchrotrons. The general principle of the scheme called longitudinal phase-space coating, validation of the concept via multi-particle beam dynamics simulations applied to the Fermilab Recycler, and its experimental demonstration are presented. In addition, it has been shown and illustrated that the rf gymnastics involved in this scheme can be used in measuring the incoherent synchrotron tune spectrum of the beam in barrier buckets and in producing a clean hollow beam …
The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) contains a 3.5-GeV storage ring serving as a national X-ray synchrotron radiation user facility characterized by a low emittance and a low coupling. The stability and quality of the electron beams are monitored continuously by an array of diagnostics. In particular, an X-ray pinhole camera is employed in the diagnostics beamline of the ring to characterize the position, size, and emittance of the beam. The performance of the measurement of the transverse electron beam size is given by the width of the point spread function (PSF) of the X-ray p…
A recent "beam splitting" experiment at LCLS apparently demonstrated that after a microbunched electron beam is kicked on a large angle compared to the divergence of the FEL radiation, the microbunching wave front is readjusted along the new direction of motion of the kicked beam. Therefore, coherent radiation from an undulator placed after the kicker is emitted along the kicked direction without suppression. This strong emission of coherent undulator radiation in the kicked direction cannot be explained in the framework of conventional synchrotron radiation theory. In a previous paper we expl…
Slow extraction of beam from synchrotrons or storage rings as required by many fixed target experiments is performed by controlled excitation and feeding of a structural lattice resonance. Due to the sensitive nature of this resonant extraction process, the temporal structure of the extracted beam is modulated by the minuscule current fluctuations present on the quadrupole magnet power supplies. Such a modulation lead to pile-ups in detectors and a significant reduction in accumulated event statistics. This contribution proposes and experimentally demonstrates that by an introduction of furthe…
A new beam dump has been designed, built, installed and operated to withstand the future proton beam extracted from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) in the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) Project at CERN, consisting of up to 1E14 protons per pulse at 2 GeV, foreseen after the machine upgrades planned for CERN's Long Shutdown 2 (2019-2020). In order to be able to efficiently dissipate the heat deposited by the primary beam, the new dump was designed as a cylindrical block assembly, made out of a copper alloy and cooled by forced airflow. In order to determine the energy density …
For heavy-ion synchrotrons an efficient Multi-Turn Injection (MTI) from the injector linac is crucial in order to reach the specified currents using the available machine acceptance. The beam loss during the MTI must not exceed the limits determined by machine protection and by the vacuum requirements. Especially for low energy and intermediate charge state ions, the beam loss at the injection septum can cause a degradation of the vacuum and a corresponding reduction of the beam lifetime. In order to optimize the injection of intense beams a very detailed simulation model was developed. Beside…
Synchrotron radiation has been used for many years as a beam diagnostic at electron accelerators. It is not normally associated with proton accelerators as the intensity of the radiation is too weak to make detection practical. However, if one utilizes the radiation originating near the edge of a bending magnet, or from a short magnet, the rapidly changing magnetic field serves to enhance the wavelengths shorter than the cutoff wavelength, which for more recent high energy proton accelerators such as Fermilab's Tevatron, tends to be visible light. This paper discusses the implementation at the…
Integrable optics is an innovation in particle accelerator design that enables strong nonlinear focusing without generating parametric resonances. We use the Synergia tracking code to investigate the application of integrable optics to high-intensity hadron rings. We consider an integrable rapid-cycling synchrotron (iRCS) designed to replace the Fermilab Booster. We find that incorporating integrability into the design suppresses the beam halo generated by a mismatched KV beam. Our iRCS design includes other features of modern ring design such as low momentum compaction factor and harmonically…
Space charge is typically one of the performance limitations for the operation of high intensity and high brightness beams in circular accelerators. In the Proton Synchrotron (PS) at CERN, losses are observed for vertical tunes above $Q_y=6.25$, especially for beams with large space charge tune shift. The work presented here shows that this behaviour is associated to structure resonances excited by space charge due to the highly symmetric accelerator lattice of the PS, typical for first generation alternating gradient synchrotrons. Experimental studies demonstrate the dependency of the losses …
Barrier rf buckets have brought about new challenges in longitudinal beam dynamics of charged particle beams in synchrotrons and at the same time led to many new remarkable prospects in beam handling. In this paper, I describe a novel beam stacking scheme for synchrotrons using barrier buckets without any emittance dilution to the beam. First I discuss the general principle of the method, called longitudinal phase-space coating. Multi-particle beam dynamics simulations of the scheme applied to the Recycler, convincingly validates the concepts and feasibility of the method. Then I demonstrate t…
A proof-of-principle experimental setup for the extraction of 6 GeV electrons from the DESY II Booster Synchrotron using the channeling effect in a bent crystal is elaborated. Various aspects of the experimental setup were investigated in detail, such as the particle beam dynamics during the extraction process, the manufacturing and characterization of bent crystals, and the detection of the extracted beam. In order to optimize the crystal geometry, the overall process of beam extraction was simulated, taking into account the influence of radiation energy losses. As result it is concluded that…
In KEKB, synchrotron radiation interferometers (SRMs) are used for measuring the transverse beam sizes. There is also a tool for enlarging the vertical beam size intentionally by making an asymmetric bump, called an ``iSize'' bump, at one of the strongest non-interleaved sextupole magnets in each KEKB ring. The calibrations of the SRMs were checked by comparing the measured vertical beam sizes with those calculated using the computer code ``SAD''. The obtained correction factors are 1.000$\pm$0.045 for HER and 0.971$\pm$0.060 for LER, which are consistent with the calibration factors of SRMs\c…
