Earliest 2007 UHECR anisotropy findings and ICRC AUGER updated maps and clustering confirms our understanding of CenA as the main nearby UHECR source. Those events are mostly lightest nuclei, as He. The events are spread by galactic fields. We argue that the main UHECR event bending, along CenA, is spreading vertically (respect to horizontal spiral galactic fields) by random (and a final coherent) Lorentz force. The He-nuclei dominance is also well probed by detailed AUGER composition data. The Lightest nuclei are still compatible with most recent Hires composition results. Such lightest UHECR nuclei are fragile and opaque even to nearest Universe. Offering a very narrow local (ten Mpc) view. This opacity explain the otherwise puzzling Virgo persistent absence. The He photo-disruption in flight should lead to halves energy tail clustering (along the same CenA group), events made by deuterium, He3 and protons (or unstable neutrons). This tail anisotropy should be revaled. The consequent foreseen UHE neutrino by UHECR Lightest nuclei dissociation, at tens-a hundred PeV, may rise soon in AUGER and TA telescopes. Such neutrino signal are quite inclined upward fluorescent Tau air-showers at nearest (2 - 4 km) horizons, at middle-low telescope view zenith angles. Their air-showers will be opening and extending in widest azimuth angle and fastest angular velocity spread. Contrary to far EeV tau expected by popular GZK neutrinos. Even hard to observe these Tau Air-showers at tens and hundred PeVs may soon shine (in a peculiar way) at near telescope views and within a short (years) time, both in AUGER, HEAT and TA sky.
Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, UHECR, maybe protons, as most still believe and claim, or nuclei; in particular lightest nuclei as we advocated recently. The first (Auger Collaboration) nucleon proposal (2007)[2] foresaw to trace clearly the UHECR GZK Universe reaching far (up to 100 Mpc) Super-Galactic-Plane, with little angular dispersion. On the contrary Lightest Nuclei model (2008)[3], inspired by observed composition and by nearest CenA clustering (almost a quarter of the AUGER events) explains a modest and narrow (few Mpc) Universe view, as well as the puzzling Virgo absence: lightest nuc…
UHECR may be either nucleons or nuclei; in the latter case the Lightest Nuclei, as He, Li, Be, explains at best the absence of Virgo signals and the crowding of events around Cen-A bent by galactic magnetic fields. This model fit the observed nuclear mass composition discovered in AUGER. However UHECR nucleons above GZK produce EeV neutrinos while Heavy Nuclei, as Fe UHECR do not produce much. UHECR He nuclei at few tens EeV suffer nuclear fragmentation (producing low energetic neutrino at tens PeVs) but it suffer anyway photo-pion GZK suppression (leading to EeV neutrinos) once above one-few …
The rise of nucleon UHECR above GZK astronomy made by protons is puzzled by three main mysteries: an unexpected nearby Virgo UHECR suppression, a rich crowded clustering frozen vertically (north-south) along Cen A, a composition suggesting nuclei and not nucleons. The UHECR map, initially consistent with GZK volumes, to day seem to be not much correlated with expected Super Galactic Plane. Moreover slant depth data of UHECR from AUGER airshower shape do not favor the proton but points to a nuclei, while HIRES, on the contrary favors mostly nucleons. We tried to solve the contradictions assumin…
The origin and composition of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Events (UHECRs) are under debate. Here we improve constraints on the source population(s) and compositions of UHECRs by accounting for UHECR deflections within existing Galactic magnetic field models (GMFs). We used Monte Carlo simulations for UHECRs detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory and AGASA in order to determine their outside-the-Galaxy arrival directions, and compared these with Galactic and extragalactic sources. The simulations, which used UHECR compositions from protons to Iron and seven models of the ordered GMF, include…
Here we point out that an observation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) photons, "GZK photons", could provide an upper limit on the level of the Extra-Galactic Radio Background, depending on the level of UHECR proton primaries (to be determined after a few years of data taking by the Pierre Auger Observatory upgrade AugerPrime). We also update our 2005 prediction of the range of GZK photon fluxes expected from proton primaries.
UHECR mystery survived first Auger claims of AGN connection within a GZK (100 Mpc size) Universe. Last 2010 UHECR maps and compositions do show a much lower correlation with AGN SuperGalactic maps and with protons (the two main ingredient of that claim). The three main AUGER results that survived are: an embarrassing absence of Virgo cluster UHECR, somehow an expected signal; a steady presence of Cen-A clustering and a remarkable signature of nuclei (not nucleon) composition. We claim that the He-like lightest nuclei may solve most of the puzzle: He UHECR cannot arrive from Virgo because light…
We studied how the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) affects the propagation of super-GZK protons that originate from extragalactic sources within the local GZK sphere. Toward this end, we set up hypothetical sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (UHECRs), virtual observers, and the magnetized cosmic web in a model universe constructed from cosmological structure formation simulations. We then arranged a set of reference objects mimicking active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local universe, with which correlations of simulated UHECR events are analyzed. With our model IGMF, the deflection…
Recent evidence from the Pierre Auger Observatory suggests a transition, at 5 EeV-10EeV in the composition of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), from protons to heavier nuclei such as iron. I consider here the implications of the heavier composition on the sources of UHECRs. The smaller magnetic rigidity implies that nuclei UHECRs are: (i) More easily accelerated (ii) Local, as they can diffuse only a few Mpc from their sources before disintegrating (iii) Isotropic, because large deflections in the extra galactic and the galactic magnetic fields erase the directional information. Uncertai…
The most distant AGN, within the allowed GZK cut-off radius, have been recently candidate by many authors as the best location for observed UHECR origination. Indeed, the apparent homogeneity and isotropy of recent UHECR signals seems to require a far cosmic isotropic and homogeneous scenario involving a proton UHECR courier: our galaxy or nearest local group or super galactic plane (ruled by Virgo cluster) are too much near and apparently too much anisotropic in disagreement with PAO and TA almost homogeneous sample data. However, the few and mild observed UHECR clustering, the North and Sout…
In this letter, we present an update of a method for analysing arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above the Greisen--Zatsepin--Kuz'min cut-off with a deep convolutional neural network developed originally in Kalashev, Pshirkov, Zotov (2020). Namely, we introduce energy as another variable employed in the analysis. This allows us to take into account the intrinsic uncertainties in energy of primary cosmic rays present in any experiment, which were not taken into account in the previous study, without any loss of quality of the classifier. We present the architecture of…
Based on a newly proposed mirror-matter model of neutron-mirror neutron ($n-n'$) oscillations, the puzzles related to ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are explained. In particular, the phenomena around the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff for UHECRs can be well understood under the new mirror matter model assuming a mirror-to-ordinary temperature ratio of $T'/T \sim 0.3$. The suppression factor of the GZK effect due to the opacity of cosmic microwave background is calculated and agrees with the observations well. Most of the super-GZK events (i.e., above the GZK cutoff), as predicted …

We consider the recent results on UHECR (Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray) composition and their distribution in the sky from ten EeV energy (the dipole anisotropy) up to the highest UHECR energies and their clustering maps: UHECR have been found mostly made by light and lightest nuclei. We summarized the arguments that favor a few localized nearby extragalactic sources for most UHECR as CenA, NG 253, M82. We comment also on the possible partial role of a few remarkable galactic UHECR sources. Finally we revive the eventual role of a relic neutrino eV mass in dark hot halo (hit by ZeV neutrinos) t…
UHECR (Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays) were expected to be protons, to fly straight and to suffer from a GZK (opacity on CMB radiation) cut off. AUGER suggested in 2007 that such early UHECR anisotropy was compatible with the foreseen Super-Galactic plane, while both HIRES and AUGER confirmed this apparent GZK cut-off in the spectra. However, the same AUGER composition since 2007 had favored nuclei (and not nucleons). The recent absence of narrow angle clustering in UHECR maps, as it should be expected for protons, the missing of events along the nearest Cluster Virgo, the wide spread (nearly 1…
We consider the recent results on UHECR (Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray), clustering, composition, distribution in the sky, from the energy of several EeV with the dipole anisotropy up to the highest ones. We have suggested since 2008 and we reconfirm here that UHECR at 40 up to 70 EeV are mostly made by light and lightest nuclei. The remarkable Virgo absence and the few localized nearby extragalactic sources as CenA, NG 253, M82 may be well understood by the lightest nuclei fragility and opacity within Mpc distances. We comment also on the role of a few galactic UHECR sources at ten EeV that ma…
We report on Chandra X-ray observations of possible-AGNs which have been correlated with Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) observed by the Pierre Auger Collaboration. Combining our X-ray observations with optical observations, we conclude that one-third of the 21 Veron-Cetty Veron (VCV) galaxies correlating with UHECRs in the first Auger data-release are actually not AGNs. We review existing optical observations of the 20 VCV galaxies correlating with UHECRs in the second Auger data-release and determine that three of them are not AGNs and two are uncertain. Overall, of the 57 published U…
Four UHECRs in the combined HiRes and AGASA datasets are backtracked in the Galactic magnetic field. They point to a common source which is localized to within 1 degree, if they are protons as is shown to be the most probable charge assignment. A Swift-BAT hard X-ray AGN in the galaxy CGCG 291-028 is the only notable source candidate within the source locus and within the GZK distance horizon. The spectrum of the four events is consistent with production in a transient event such as a stellar tidal disruption flare. Under the assumption the UHECRs were produced in CGCG 291-028, the total energ…
Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) at GZK cut off energy (E \geq 55 EeV eV) may keep sharp or diffused directionality wherever their composition is made by nucleon or light nuclei. AUGER UHECR (2007-2010) did show a mild clustering mainly around Cen A. Two over three of the recent discovered AUGER multiplet (a dozen of events each) tail clustering at twenty EeV are pointing to primary sources very near the same UHECR crowded Cen A region. The Tens EeV tail is aligned with the same UHECR events. We foresaw such possibility as fragment tails of lightest UHECR nuclei. We discuss the relevance …
The last few years, 2013-2016, the high energy neutrino events in ICECUBE and the last rich UHECR maps by AUGER and TA were hopefully opening a new High Energy astronomy age. Unfortunately the foreseen correlation between neutrino with best gamma X sources has not (yet) been found. The most celebrated GRB gamma sources do not correlate to any neutrino events. The expected Local Group anisotropy in UHECR within the nuleon GZK cut off, has just fade away. UHECR events from Virgo are almost absent. Above two hundred TeV energy tau neutrino might shine by double bang in detectable way in ICECUBE. …
We propose a new method for the estimation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) mass composition from a distribution of their arrival directions. The method employs a test statistic (TS) based on a characteristic deflection of UHECR events with respect to the distribution of luminous matter in the local Universe. Making realistic simulations of the mock UHECR sets, we show that this TS is robust to the presence of galactic and non-extreme extra-galactic magnetic fields and sensitive to the mass composition of events in a set. This allows one to constrain the UHECR mass composition by compar…
At highest energy edges Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray, (UHECR) and PeVs neutrino (UHE neutrino), should soon offer new exciting astronomy. The fast and somehow contradictory growth of hundred of antagonist models shows the explosive vitality of those new astronomy frontiers. No conclusive understanding on the UHECR and UHE neutrino source are at hand. The earliest expectation of GRBs (as a one shoot Fireball model) as the main (UHE neutrino) sources has been rejected. The source of UHECR as the expected GZK ones within our Super-Galactic Plane (within few tens Mpc) it has been quite disproved. …
Ultra High Cosmic Rays (UHECR) should be tracing their sources, making a new astronomy. Their events counting are finally growing, by Auger experiment, into cosmic sky. Their map should follow the mass distribution in a narrow cosmic volume (the GZK cut off region, correlated with Super Galactic Plane (SPG) or Local Group) if they were protons, as most expected. Recently the last 69 UHECR did not longer follow the SGP map, opening the way to very different correlations, and extreme bending connection; we reconfirm here our Lightest Nuclei interpretation, while showing here the last event over …
Earliest AUGER UHECR anisotropy correlated with AGN within a GZK Universe almost fade away. Recent UHECR mass compositions did show a negligible nucleon composition and an UHECR nuclei (light or heavy) signature. The absence of UHECR events toward the Virgo cluster, an unique spread clustering of events around Cen-A, our nearest AGN, suggested a He-like nuclei as the main extragalactic UHECR component from Cen A, coexisting with Auger and HIRES composition. Because the light nuclei fragility such He UHECR cannot arrive from Virgo. Multiplet at twenty EeV along Cen A recently discovered by Auge…
I review what is known and surmised about magnetic fields in space, from our Milky Way environment to the distant Universe beyond the GZK horizon. This includes our gradually improving specification of the CR propagation environment within the Milky Way, the nearby universe within ~ 10 Mpc, and out to the GZK "horizon" near 100Mpc. Within these modest intergalactic distances we hope for some pointing capability for CR energies above ~ 1019eV, and for different species, as the observed event numbers accumulate in this range over the near future. The wider intergalactic propagation environment b…
The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is one of the most mystifying issues in astroparticle physics. It has been suggested that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are excellent acceleration sites for cosmic rays. The propagation of UHECRs from the GRB host galaxy to the Earth should generate delayed secondary photons and neutrinos. Here we present a dedicated search for delayed UHECR and neutrino emission centered around the position of nearby GRB 980425/SN 1998bw. Located at a distance of 36.9 Mpc, GRB 980425/SN 1998bw is well within the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) distance horizon. We …
Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are atomic nuclei from space with vastly higher energies than any other particles ever observed. Their origin and chemical composition remain a mystery. As we show here, the large- and intermediate-angular-scale anisotropies observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory are a powerful tool for understanding the origin of UHECRs. Without specifying any particular production mechanism, but only postulating that the source distribution follows the matter distribution of the local Universe, a good accounting of the magnitude, direction and energy dependence of the…
We consider the possibility that tidal disruption events (TDEs) caused by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in nearby galaxies can account for the ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) hotspot reported recently by the Telescope Array (TA) and the warm spot by Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO). We describe the expected cosmic-ray signal from a TDE and derive the constraints set by the timescale for dispersion due to intergalactic magnetic fields and the accretion time of the SMBH. We find that TDEs in M82 can explain the hotspot detected by the TA regardless of whether the UHECRs are composed of pro…
We revisit the neutrino and ultra high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) production from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time-dependent simulations for the proton-induced cascades. This method can generate self-consistent photon, neutrino and escaped neutron spectra. To obtain the integrated background spectra, we take into account the distributions of the burst luminosity and pulse duration timescale. A benchmark case with standard GRB luminosity function, a bulk Lorentz factor $Γ=300$ and a proton to gamma-ray luminosity fraction $f_{\rm p}=10$, is consistent with both the neutrino upper-limits and the…

The study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) at Earth cannot prescind from the study of their propagation in the Universe. In this paper, we present HERMES, the \emph{ad hoc} Monte Carlo code we have developed for the realistic simulation of UHECR propagation. We discuss the modeling adopted to simulate the cosmology, the magnetic fields, the interactions with relic photons and the production of secondary particles. In order to show the potential applications of HERMES for astroparticle studies, we provide an estimation of the surviving probability of UHE protons, the GZK horizons of nuc…
The origin of the highest energy cosmic rays remains an enigma. They offer a window to new physics, including tests of physical laws relevant to their propagation and interactions, at energies unattainable by terrestrial accelerators. They must be accelerated locally, as otherwise background radiations would severely suppress the flux of protons and nuclei, at energies above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) limit. Nearby Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), Hypernovae, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and their flares, have all been suggested and debated as possible sources. A local sub-population of type I…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are considered to be one of the most appropriate sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, $E \gtrsim 10^{18} \mathrm{~eV}$). Radiogalaxy Virgo A (M87) in the centre of a cluster of galaxies Virgo Cluster (VC) can be a prominent source of UHECRs. We investigate the possible contribution of Virgo A and the VC to the flux of events with trans-GZK energies - extremely high energy cosmic rays (EHECRs) - from the recent Auger and Telescope Array (TA) data sets ($E > 52 \mathrm{~EeV}$ and $E > 57 \mathrm{~EeV}$, respectively). We simulate EHECR propagation from …
We develop a model for explaining the data of Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger) for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR), in particular, the mass composition being steadily heavier with increasing energy from 3 EeV to 35 EeV. The model is based on the proton-dominated composition in the energy range (1 - 3) EeV observed in both Auger and HiRes experiments. Assuming extragalactic origin of this component, we argue that it must disappear at higher energies due to a low maximum energy of acceleration, E_p^{\max} \sim (4 - 10) EeV. Under an assumption of rigidity acceleration mechanism, the maximu…
