The dynamic generalization of the Peierls-Nabarro equation for dislocations cores in an isotropic elastic medium is derived for screw, and edge dislocations of the `glide' and `climb' type, by means of Mura's eigenstrains method. These equations are of the integro-differential type and feature a non-local kernel in space and time. The equation for the screw differs by an instantaneous term from a previous attempt by Eshelby. Those for both types of edges involve in addition an unusual convolution with the second spatial derivative of the displacement jump. As a check, it is shown that these equations correctly reduce, in the stationary limit and for all three types of dislocations, to Weertman's equations that extend the static Peierls-Nabarro model to finite constant velocities.
The Comment by Markenscoff that criticizes a recent dynamic extension of the Peierls-Nabarro equation [Y.-P. Pellegrini, Phys. Rev. B 81, 024101 (2010)] is refuted by means of simple examples that illustrate the interest of using an approach based on generalized functions to compute dynamic stress fields.
We reexamine two essential issues within the Peierls-Nabarro model which are critical in obtaining accurate values for the Peierls stress. The first issue is related to the sampling scheme of the misfit energy across the glide plane and the second one is the effect of relaxation on the Peierls stress. It is shown that most of the current applications of the Peierls-Nabarro model do not treat properly the two issues and therefore are not able to predict reliable values for the Peierls stress. We argue that the double counting scheme for the misfit energy at both sides of the glide plane is phys…
Non-singular dislocation continuum theories are studied. A comparison between Peierls-Nabarro dislocations and straight dislocations in strain gradient elasticity is given. The non-singular displacement fields, non-singular stresses, plastic distortions and dislocation core shapes are analyzed and compared for the two models. The main conclusion of this study is that due to their characteristic properties, the non-singular displacement fields, non-singular stresses and dislocation core shape of screw and edge dislocations obtained in the framework of strain gradient elasticity are more realist…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are single phase crystals that consist of random solid solutions of multiple elements in approximately equal proportions. This class of novel materials have exhibited superb mechanical properties, such as high strength combined with other desired features. The strength of crystalline materials is associated with the motion of dislocations. In this paper, we derive a stochastic continuum model based on the Peierls-Nabarro framework for inter-layer dislocations in a bilayer HEA from an atomistic model that incorporates the atomic level randomness. We use asymptotic ana…
We have employed the improved Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) equation to study the properties of 1/2<110> edge dislocation in {111} plane in FCC metals Al, Cu, Ir, Pd, and Pt. The generalized-stacking-fault energy (GSFE) surface entering the equation is calculated by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). The accuracy of the method has been tested by calculating values for various stacking fault energies which favorably compare with the previous theoretical and experimental results. The core structures, including the core widths both of the edge and screw components, dissociation behav…
A new semi-analytical iterative scheme is proposed in this work for solving the generalized Peierls-Nabarro model. The numerical method developed here exploits certain basic properties of the Hilbert transform to achieve the desired reduction of the non-local and non-linear equations characterizing the generalized Peierls-Nabarro model to a local fixed point iteration scheme. The method is validated with simple examples involving the 1D Peierls-Nabarro model corresponding to a sinusoidal stacking fault energy, and with calculations of the core structure of both edge and screw dislocations on t…
Dislocation is one of the most critical and fundamental crystal defects that dominate the mechanical behavior of crystalline solids, however, a quantitative determination of its character and property in experiments is quite challenging and limited so far. In this paper, a fully automated Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) analyzer named PNADIS is presented; a complete set of the character and property of dislocation can be automatically derived, including the dislocation core structure, Peierls energy and stress, pressure field around dislocation core, solute/dislocation interaction energy, as well as the…
A novel semidiscrete Peierls-Nabarro model is introduced which can be used to study dislocation spreading at more than one slip planes, such as dislocation cross-slip and junctions. The strength of the model, when combined with ab initio calculations for the energetics, is that it produces essentiallyan atomistic simulation for dislocation core properties without suffering from the uncertainties associated with empirical potentials. Therefore, this method is particularly useful in providing insight into alloy design when empirical potentials are not available or not reliable for such multi-ele…
We investigate the diffusion of a grain boundary in a crystalline material. We consider in particular the case of a regularly spaced low-angle grain boundary schematized as an array of dislocations that interact with each other through long-range stress fields and with the crystalline Peierls-Nabarro potential. The methodology employed to analyze the dynamics of the center of mass of the grain boundary and its spatio-temporal fluctuations is based on over-damped Langevin equations. The generality and the efficiency of this technique is proved by the agreement with molecular dynamics simulation…
Crystals and other condensed matter systems described by density waves often exhibit dislocations. Here we show, by considering the topology of the ground state manifolds (GSMs) of such systems, that dislocations in the density phase field always split into disclinations, and that the disclinations themselves are constrained to sit at particular points in the GSM. Consequently, the topology of the GSM forbids zero-energy dislocation glide, giving rise to a Peirels-Nabarro barrier.
This paper evaluates qualitatively as well as quantitatively the accuracy of a recently proposed Peierls--Nabarro Finite Element (PN-FE) model for dislocations by a direct comparison with an equivalent molecular statics simulation. To this end, a two-dimensional microstructural specimen subjected to simple shear is considered, consisting of a central soft phase flanked by two hard-phase regions. A hexagonal atomic structure with equal lattice spacing is adopted, the interactions of which are described by the Lennard--Jones potential with phase specific depths of its energy well. During loading…
The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within…
A new formulation for the equation of motion of interacting dislocations is derived. From this solution it is shown that additional coupling forces, of kinetic and inertial origin, should be considered in Dislocation Dynamics (DD) simulations at high strain rates. A heuristic modification of this general equation of motion enables one to introduce retardation into inertial and elastic forces, in accordance with a progressive rearrangement of fields through wave propagation. The influence of the corresponding coupling terms and retardation effects are then illustrated in the case of dislocation…
Cohesive zone models provide an illuminating and tractable way to include constitutive nonlinearity into continuum models of defects. Powerful insights have been gained by studying both dislocations and cracks using such analyses. Recent work has shown that as a result of the locality assumption present in such cohesive zone models, significant errors can be made in the treatment of defect energies. This paper aims to construct a non-local version of the Peierls-Nabarro model in which the atomic level stresses induced at the slip plane depend in a non-local way on the slip degrees of freedom. …
Atomistic computations of the Peierls stress in fcc metals are relatively scarce. By way of contrast, there are many more atomistic computations for bcc metals, as well as mixed discrete-continuum computations of the Peierls-Nabarro type for fcc metals. One of the reasons for this is the low Peierls stresses in fcc metals. Because atomistic computations of the Peierls stress take place in finite simulation cells, image forces caused by boundaries must either be relaxed or corrected for if system size independent results are to be obtained. One of the approaches that has been developed for trea…
We have employed the semidiscrete variational generalized Peierls-Nabarro model to study the dislocation core properties of aluminum. The generalized stacking fault energy surfaces entering the model are calculated by using first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) with pseudopotentials and the embedded atom method (EAM). Various core properties, including the core width, splitting behavior, energetics and Peierls stress for different dislocations have been investigated. The correlation between the core energetics and dislocation character has been explored. Our results reveal a simple …
Dislocation core properties of tin (β-Sn) were investigated using the semi-discrete variational Peierls-Nabarro model (SVPN). The SVPN model, which connects the continuum elasticity treatment of the long-range strain field around a dislocation with an approximate treatment of the dislocation core, was employed to calculate various core properties, including the core energetics, widths, and Peierls stresses for different dislocation structures. The role of core energetics and properties on dislocation character and subsequent slip behavior in β-Sn was investigated. For instance, this work shows…
Metals with fcc structure may exhibit deformation twinning under specific conditions, which is an interesting but somewhat elusive aspect of their deformation behavior. It is well acknowledged that the phenomenon occurs through the activities of twinning partial dislocations. However, the lack of a comprehensive understanding of their fundamental properties obstructs the development of detailed multiscale models of crystal plasticity in the fcc metals. Here we explore the core-structures and lattice friction of twinning partials through atomistically informed numerical modeling. To this end, w…
We study the coherent propagation and incoherent diffusion of in-plane elastic waves in a two dimensional continuum populated by many, randomly placed and oriented, edge dislocations. Because of the Peierls-Nabarro force the dislocations can oscillate around an equilibrium position with frequency $ω_0$. The coupling between waves and dislocations is given by the Peach-Koehler force. This leads to a wave equation with an inhomogeneous term that involves a differential operator. In the coherent case, a Dyson equation for a mass operator is set up and solved to all orders in perturbation theory i…
A theoretical framework is proposed to derive a dynamic equation motion for rectilinear dislocations within isotropic continuum elastodynamics. The theory relies on a recent dynamic extension of the Peierls-Nabarro equation, so as to account for core-width generalized stacking-fault energy effects. The degrees of freedom of the solution of the latter equation are reduced by means of the collective-variable method, well known in soliton theory, which we reformulate in a way suitable to the problem at hand. Through these means, two coupled governing equations for the dislocation position and cor…
