Fully differential cross sections are calculated for the ionization of H$_2$ by fast charged projectiles using a semiclassical model developed previously for the ionization of atoms. The method is tested in case of 4 keV electron and 6 MeV proton projectiles. The obtained results show good agreement with the available experimental data. Interference effects due to the two-center character of the target are also observed and analyzed.
We review the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization. The semiclassical two-step model describes quantum interference and accounts for the ionic potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory. We discuss formulation and implementation of this model, its further developments, as well as some of the applications. The reviewed applications of the model include strong-field holography with photoelectrons, multielectron polarization effects in ionization by an intense laser pulse, and strong-field ionization of the hydrogen molecule.
We present a mixed quantum-classical approach to strong-field ionization - a semiclassical two-step model with quantum input. In this model the initial conditions for classical trajectories that simulate electron wave packet after ionization are determined by the exact quantum dynamics. As a result, the model allows to overcome deficiencies of standard semiclassical approaches in describing the ionization step. The comparison with the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation shows that for ionization of a one-dimensional atom the model yields quantitative agreement w…
We extend the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that describes quantum interference and accounts for the Coulomb potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory to the hydrogen molecule. In the simplest case of the molecule oriented along the polarization direction of a linearly polarized laser field, we predict significant deviations of the two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra from the case of atomic hydrogen. Specifically, for the hydrogen molecule the electron energy spectrum falls off slower with increasing energy, and th…
Quasi-static models of barrier suppression have played a major role in our understanding of the ionization of atoms and molecules in strong laser fields. Despite their success, in the case of diatomic molecules these studies have so far been restricted to fields aligned with the molecular axis. In this paper we investigate the locations and heights of the potential barriers in the hydrogen molecular ion in an electric field of arbitrary orientation. We find that the barriers undergo bifurcations as the external field strength and direction are varied. This phenomenon represents an unexpected l…
We present a semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that accounts for path interferences of tunnel-ionized electrons in the ionic potential beyond perturbation theory. Within the framework of a classical trajectory Monte-Carlo representation of the phase-space dynamics, the model employs the semiclassical approximation to the phase of the full quantum propagator in the exit channel. By comparison with the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for strong-field ionization of hydrogen, we show that for suitable choices of the momentum distribution a…
In the semiclassical picture of photoionization process in intense laser fields, the ionization rate solely depends on the amplitude of the electric field and the final photoelectron momentum corresponds to the instant of ionization of the photoelectron, however, this picture has never been checked rigorously. Recently an attosecond angular streaking technique based on this semiclassical perspective has been widely applied to temporal measurement of the atomic and molecular dynamics in intense laser fields. We use a Wigner-distribution-like function to calculate the time-emission angle distrib…
We present both full quantum mechanical and semiclassical calculations of above threshold ionization (ATI) of a hydrogen atom in the tunneling regime by a few-cycle linearly polarized infrared laser pulse. As a quantum treatment, we applied the direct integration of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). In the semiclassical approximation (SCA), it is assumed that wavepacket propagation in the post-tunneling process can be well described within the classical framework. With these two methods, we analyze the similarities and deviations for ionization of the hydrogen atom. We found that…
We study the formation of highly excited neutral atoms during the break-up of strongly-driven molecules. Past work on this significant phenomenon has shown that during the formation of highly excited neutral atoms ($\mathrm{H^{*}}$) during the break-up of H$_{2}$ in a linear laser field the electron that escapes does so either very quickly or after remaining bound for a few periods of the laser field. Here, we address the electron-nuclear dynamics in $\mathrm{H^{*}}$ formation in elliptical laser fields, through Coulomb explosion. We show that with increasing ellipticity two-electron effects a…
Nonlinear relativistic ionization phenomena induced by a strong laser radiation with elliptically polarization are considered. The starting point is the classical relativistic action for a free electron moving in the electromagnetic field created by a strong laser beam. The application of the relativistic action to the classical barrier-suppression ionization is briefly discussed. Further the relativistic version of the Landau-Dykhne formula is employed to consider the semiclassical sub-barrier ionization. Simple analytical expressions have been found for: (i) the rates of the strong-field non…
A three-dimensional semiclassical model is used to study double ionization of Ar when driven by a near-infrared and near-single-cycle laser pulse for intensities ranging from 0.85$\times$10$^{14}$ W/cm$^{2}$ to 5$\times$10$^{14}$ W/cm$^{2}$. Asymmetry parameters, distributions of the sum of the two electron momentum components along the direction of the polarization of the laser field and correlated momenta are computed as a function of intensity and of the carrier envelope phase. A very good agreement is found with recently obtained results in kinematically complete experiments employing near…
Phase and time delays of atomic above-threshold ionization were recently experimentally explored in an $ω-2ω$ setting [Zipp et al, Optica 1, 361 (2014)]. The phases of wavepackets ejected from argon by a strong $2ω$ pulse were probed as a function of the relative phase of a weaker $ω$ probe pulse. Numerical simulations solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) displayed a sensitive dependence of the doubly differential momentum distribution on the relative phase between the $ω$ and $2ω$ fields. Moreover, a surprisingly strong variation of the extracted phase delays on the intensit…
Based on the semiclassical, impact parameter method a theoretical model is constructed to calculate totally differential cross sections for single ionization of helium by impact with fast C$^{6+}$ ions. Good agreement with the experiment is achieved in the scattering plane, while in the perpendicular plane a similar structure to that observed experimentally is obtained. The contribution of different partial waves to the cross section is also investigated.
A theoretical study of ionization of the hydrogen atom due to an XUV pulse in the presence of an IR laser is presented. Well-established theories are usually used to describe the problem of laser assisted photoelectron effect. However, the well-known soft-photon approximation firstly posed by Maquet et al in Journal of Modern Optics 54, 1847 (2007) and Kazansky's theory in Phys. Rev. A 82, 033420 (2010) completely fails to predict the electron emission prependicularly to the polarization direction. Making use of a simple semiclassical model, we study the angle-resolved energy distribution of p…
A theoretical study of the interference pattern imprinted on the doubly differential momentum distribution of the photoelectron due to atomic ionization induced by a short laser pulse is developed from a semiclassical standpoint. We use the semiclassical two-step model of Shvetsov-Shilovski et al. (Phys. Rev. A 94, 013415) to elucidate the nature of the holographic structure. Three different types of trajectories are characterized during the ionization process by a single cycle pulse with three different types of interferences. We show that the holographic interference arises from the ionizati…
We present here triple differential cross sections for ionization of hydrogen atoms by electron impact at 1eV, 0.5eV and 0.3eV energy above threshold, calculated in the hyperspherical partial wave theory. The results are in very good agreement with the available semiclassical results of Deb and Crothers \cite{DC02} for these energies. With this, we are able to demonstrate that the hyperspherical partial wave theory yields good cross sections from 30 eV \cite{DPC03} down to near threshold for equal energy sharing kinematics.
In this work our previous fully differential ionization cross section calculations using the semiclassical, impact parameter method are improved by a new method suitable to calculate impact parameter values corresponding to different momentum transfers. This goal is achieved by two successive steps. First, using the transverse momentum balance different projectile scattering angles are calculated for the binary and recoil peak regions as a function of the transferred momentum. Then, by treating the projectile scattering as a classical potential scattering problem, impact parameters are assigne…
A new relativistic method based on the Dirac equation for calculating fully differential cross sections for ionization in ion-atom collisions is developed. The method is applied to ionization of the atomic hydrogen by antiproton impact, as a non-relativistic benchmark. The fully differential, as well as various doubly and singly differential cross sections for ionization are presented. The role of the interaction between the projectile and the target nucleus is discussed. Several discrepancies in available theoretical predictions are resolved. The relativistic effects are studied for ionizatio…
We present a theoretical method for calculating multiphoton ionization amplitudes and cross sections of few-electron atoms. The present approach is based on an extraction of partial wave amplitudes from a scattering wave function, which is calculated by solving a system of driven Schroedinger equations. The extraction relies on a description of partial waves in terms of a small number of Coulomb waves with fixed wave numbers. The method can be used for photon energies below and above the ionization threshold and to treat resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. We use it to calculate two-, t…
We revisit recent developments in the theoretical foundations of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). TDDFT is then applied to the calculation of total cross sections for ionization processes in the antiproton-Helium collision system. The Kohn-Sham potential is approximated as the sum of the Hartree-exchange potential and a correlation potential that was proposed in the context of laser-induced ionization. Furthermore, some approaches to the problem of calculating the ionization probabilities from the density are discussed. Small projectile energies below 5keV are considered as we…
A general model and toolkit for the ionization of three or more electrons in strongly driven molecules using an effective Coulomb potential for the interaction between bound electrons
Strong-field photoelectron momentum imaging of the prototypical biomolecule indole was disentangled in a combined experimental and computational approach. Experimentally, strong control over the molecules enabled the acquisition of photoelectron momentum distributions in the molecular frame for a well-defined, narrow range of incident intensities. A novel, highly efficient semiclassical simulation setup based on the adiabatic tunneling theory quantitatively reproduced these results. Jointly, experiment and computations revealed holographic structures in the asymptotic momentum distributions, w…
A semiclassical impact parameter version of the continuum distorted wave-Eikonal initial state theory is developed to study the differential ionization of $Li$ atoms in collisions with $Li^{2+}$ ions. Both post and prior forms of the transition amplitude are considered. The fully differential cross sections are calculated for the lithium targets in their ground and their first excited states and for the projectile ions at 16~MeV impact energy. The role of the internuclear interaction as well as the significance of the post-prior discrepancy in the ejected electron spectra are investigated. The…
We demonstrate significant enhancement of frustrated double ionization (FDI) in the two-electron triatomic molecule D$_{3}^{+}$ when driven by counter-rotating two-color circular (CRTC) laser fields. We employ a three-dimensional semiclassical model that fully accounts for electron and nuclear motion in strong fields. For different pairs of wavelengths, we compute the probabilities of the FDI pathways as a function of the ratio of the two field-strengths. We identify a pathway of frustrated double ionization that is not present in strongly-driven molecules with linear fields. In this pathway t…
Within a semiclassical description of above-threshold ionization (ATI) we identify the interplay between intracycle and intercycle interferences. The former is imprinted as a modulation envelope on the discrete multiphoton peaks formed by the latter. This allows to unravel the complex interference pattern observed for the full solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) in terms of diffraction at a grating in the time domain. These modulations can be clearly seen in the dependence of the ATI spectra on the laser wavelength. Shifts in energy modulation result from the effect of t…
A review of some recently developed methods of calculating multiple differential cross-sections of photoionization and electron impactionization of atoms and molecules having two active electrons is presented. The methods imply original approaches to calculating three-particle Coulomb wave functions. The external complex scaling method and the formalism of the Schroedinger equation with a source in the right-hand side are considered. Efficiency of the time-dependent approaches to the scattering problem, such as the paraxial approximation and the time-dependent scaling, is demonstrated. An orig…
Using a combination of semiclassical and recently developed wave packet propagation techniques we find the quantum self-ionization process of highly excited ions moving in magnetic fields which has its origin in the energy transfer from the center of mass to the electronic motion. It obeys a time scale by orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding classical process. Importantly a quantum coherence phenomenon leading to the intermittent behaviour of the ionization signal is found and analyzed. Universal properties of the ionization process are established.
The use of semiclassical models based on the Strong Field Approximation (SFA) is ubiquitous in strong field multi-photon ionization and underlies many key developments in attosecond science, including the description of High Harmonic Generation (HHG). However, such models are notably lacking in streaking experiments, which use an attosecond pulse to initiate single-photon ionization and a lower frequency infrared pulse to provide timing information. Here, we introduce a classical Wigner propagation (CWP) method, which analogously to semiclassical models in strong field ionization, treats the i…
We present a practical numerical technique for calculating tunneling ionization rates from arbitrary 1-D potential wells in the presence of a linear external potential by determining the widths of the resonances in the spectral density, rho(E), adiabatically connected to the field-free bound states. While this technique applies to more general external potentials, we focus on the ionization of electrons from atoms and molecules by DC electric fields, as this has an important and immediate impact on the understanding of the multiphoton ionization of molecules in strong laser fields.
The delta function gauge of the electromagnetic potential allows semiclassical formulas to be obtained for the probability of exciting a single electron out of the ground state in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion reaction. Exact formulas have been obtained in the limits of zero impact parameter and large, perturbative, impact parameter. The perturbative impact parameter result can be exploited to obtain a semi-empirical cross section formula of the form, sigma = A ln(gamma) + B, for single electron ionization. A and B can be evaluated for any combination of target and projectile, and the resulti…
