An important dynamic parameter of barred galaxies is the bar pattern speed. Among several methods that are used for the determination of the pattern speed the Tremaine-Weinberg method has the advantage of model independency and accuracy. In this work we apply the method to a simulated bar including gas dynamics and study the effect of 2D spectroscopy data quality on robustness of the method. We added a white noise and a Gaussian random field to the data and measured the corresponding errors in the pattern speed. We found that a signal to noise ratio in surface density ~5 introduces errors of ~20% for the Gaussian noise, while for the white noise the corresponding errors reach ~50%. At the same time the velocity field is less sensitive to contamination. On the basis of the performed study we applied the method to the NGC 3367 spiral galaxy using Hα Fabry-Perot interferometry data. We found for the pattern speed 43 \pm 6 km/s/kpc for this galaxy.
To understand the Universe a highly accurate ($\sim$1%) primordial helium abundance (Yp) determination plays an important role; it is extremely important to constrain: Big Bang Nucleosynthesis models, elementary particle physics, and the study of galactic chemical evolution. Low-metallicity HII regions have been used to estimate it since their statistical uncertainties are relatively small. We present a new determination of the primordial helium abundance, based on long-slit spectra of the HII region NGC 346 in the small Magellanic cloud. We found that for NGC 346: X=0.7465, Y=0.2505, and Z=0.…
The color magnitude diagram (CMD) of NGC 1851 presents two subgiant branches (SGB), probably due the presence of two populations differing in total CNO content. We test the idea that a difference in total CNO may simulate an age difference when comparing the CMD of clusters to derive relative ages. We compare NGC 1851 with NGC 6121 (M4), a cluster of very similar [Fe/H]. We find that, with a suitable shift of the CMDs that brings the two red horizontal branches at the same magnitude level, the unevolved main sequence and red giant branch match, but the SGB of NGC 6121 and its red giant branch …
We present a direct determination of the stellar metallicity in the close pair galaxy NGC~4038 (D = 20 Mpc) based on the quantitative analysis of moderate resolution KMOS/VLT spectra of three super star clusters (SSCs). The method adopted in our analysis has been developed and optimised to measure accurate metallicities from atomic lines in the $J$-band of single red supergiant (RSG) or RSG-dominated star clusters. Hence, our metallicity measurements are not affected by the biases and poorly understood systematics inherent to strong line HII methods which are routinely applied to massive data …
An infrared L- and M-band spectral survey, performed toward the young planetary nebula NGC 7027 with the iSHELL instrument on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), has revealed more than 20 vibrational lines of the molecules HeH$^+$, H$_2$, and CH$^+$ and more than 50 spectral lines of atoms and atomic ions. The present paper focuses on the atomic line emissions, the molecular lines having been discussed in two previous publications (Neufeld et al. 2020, 2021). The atomic lines detected with high confidence in the 2.951 - 5.24 micron region covered (incompletely) by this survey comprise (…
We carried out $^{12}$CO(J = 1 -0) observations toward bar and arm regions of strongly barred galaxies, NGC 1300 and NGC 5383, with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope (beamsize of 1-2 kpc in the galaxies). The aim of the observations is to qualitatively examine a new scenario for the suppression of star formation in bars based on recent high-resolution numerical simulations: higher speed collisions between molecular clouds in the bar region compared with the arm region suppress the massive star formation. CO emissions were detected from all the regions, indicating the presence of the molecular …
We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with o…
Different massive black hole mass - host galaxy scaling relations suggest that the growth of massive black holes is entangled with the evolution of their host galaxies. The number of measured black hole masses is still limited, and additional measurements are necessary to understand the underlying physics of this apparent co-evolution. We add six new black hole mass (MBH) measurements of nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies to the known black hole mass sample, namely NGC 584, NGC 2784, NGC 3640, NGC 4570, NGC 4281 and NGC 7049. Our target galaxies have effective velocity dispersions (σe) b…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4264, a lenticular galaxy in the region of the Virgo Cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with its neighbour, NGC 4261. We measured the bar radius and strength from SDSS imaging and the bar pattern speed from MUSE integral-field spectroscopy. We find that NGC 4264 hosts a strong and large bar, which is rotating fast. The accurate measurement of the bar rotation rate allows us to exclude that the formation of the bar was triggered by the ongoing interaction.
We analyze the dependence of the membership probabilities obtained from kinematical variables on the radius of the field of view around open clusters (the sampling radius, Rs). From simulated data, we show that the best discrimination between cluster members and non-members is obtained when the sampling radius is very close to the cluster radius. At higher Rs values more field stars tend to be erroneously assigned as cluster members. From real data of two open clusters (NGC 2323 and NGC 2311) we obtain that the number of identified cluster members always increases with increasing Rs. However, …
To place meaningful constraints on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis models, the primordial helium abundance determination is crucial. Low-metallicity HII regions have been used to estimate it since their statistical uncertainties are relatively small. We present a new determination of the primordial helium abundance, based on long slit spectra of the HII region NGC 346 in the small Magellanic cloud. We obtained spectra using three $409'' \times 0.51''$ slits divided in 97 subsets. They cover the range $λ\lambda3600-7400$ of the electromagnetic spectrum. We used PyNeb and standard reduction procedures …
Density waves in galaxy disks have been proposed over the years, in a variety of specific models, to explain spiral arm structure and its relation to the mass distribution, notably in barred galaxies. An important parameter in dynamical density wave theories is the corotation radius, the galactocentric distance at which the stars and gas rotate at the same speed as the quasi-static propagating density wave. Determining corotation, and the pattern speed of a bar have become relevant to tests of cosmologically based theories of galaxy evolution involving the dynamical braking of bars by interact…
The existing open cluster membership determination algorithms are either prior dependent on some known parameters of clusters or are not automatable to large samples of clusters. In this paper, we present, ML-MOC, a new machine learning based approach to identify likely members of open clusters using the Gaia DR2 data, and no a priori information about cluster parameters. We use the k-Nearest Neighbours (kNN) algorithm and the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) on the high-precision proper motions and parallax measurements from Gaia DR2 data to determine the membership probabilities of individual so…
We present a stellar dynamical mass measurement of a newly detected supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the fast-rotating, massive elliptical galaxy NGC 2693 as part of the MASSIVE survey. We combine high signal-to-noise integral field spectroscopy (IFS) from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) with wide-field data from the Mitchell Spectrograph at McDonald Observatory to extract and model stellar kinematics of NGC 2693 from the central $\sim 150$ pc out to $\sim2.5$ effective radii. Observations from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 are used to determine the stellar light…
In this paper, we present BVRI imaging data of NGC 613. We use these data to determine the corotation radius of the bar, using the photometric phase crossing method. This method uses the phase angle of the spiral structure in several wavebands, and looks for a crossing between the blue (B) light and the redder wavebands (e.g., R or I). For NGC 613, we find two phase crossings, an outer phase crossing at 136 +/- 8 arcsec and an inner phase crossing at 16 +/- 8 arcsec. We argue that the outer phase crossing is due to the bar corotation radius, and from the bar length of $R_{\rm bar}=90.0\pm4.0$ …
Galactic bars are important drivers of galactic evolution, and yet how they impact the interstellar medium and correspondingly star formation, remains unclear. We present simulation results for two barred galaxies with different formation mechanisms, bars formed in isolation or via a tidal interaction, to consider the spatially and temporally varying trends of star formation. We focus on the early (< 1Gyr) epoch of bar formation so that the interaction is clearly identifiable. The nearby NGC 4303 (isolated) and NGC 3627 (interaction history) are selected as observational analogues to tailor th…
[abridged] We present observations of NGC524 and NGC2549 with LGS AO obtained at GEMINI North telescope using the NIFS IFU in the K band. The purpose of these observations, together with previously obtained observations with the SAURON IFU, is to determine the masses (Mbh) of the supermassive black holes (SMBH). The targeted galaxies were chosen to have central light profiles showing a core (NGC524) and a cusp (NGC2549), to probe the feasibility of using the galaxy centre as the NGS required for LGS AO. We employ an innovative `open loop' technique. The data have spatial resolution of 0.23" an…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4264, a barred lenticular galaxy in the region of the Virgo Cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with one of its neighbours, NGC 4261. We measured the bar radius (a_bar=3.2 +/-0.5 kpc) and strength (S_bar=0.31+/-0.04) of NGC 4264 from Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging and its bar pattern speed (Omega_bar=71+/-4 km/s/kpc) using the Tremaine-Weinberg method with stellar-absorption integral-field spectroscopy performed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at the Very Large Telescope. We derived the circular velocity (V_circ=189+/-…
Aims: We characterised the properties of the bar hosted in lenticular galaxy NGC 4277, which is located behind the Virgo cluster. Methods: We measured the bar length and strength from the surface photometry obtained from the broad-band imaging of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and we derived the bar pattern speed from the stellar kinematics obtained from the integral-field spectroscopy performed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at the Very Large Telescope. We also estimated the co-rotation radius from the circular velocity, which we constrained by correcting the stellar streaming motio…
Context. Open clusters are ideal test particles to study the chemical evolution of the Galactic disc. However the existing high-resolution abundance determinations, not only of [Fe/H], but also of other key elements, is largely insufficient at the moment. Aims. To increase the number of Galactic open clusters with high quality abundance determinations, and to gather all the literature determinations published so far. Methods. Using high-resolution (R~30000), high-quality (S/N$>60 per pixel), we obtained spectra for twelve stars in four open clusters with the fiber spectrograph FOCES, at the 2.…
Bars play an important role in mixing material in the inner regions of galaxies and stimulating radial migration. Previous observations have found evidence for the impact of a bar on metallicity gradients but the effect is still inconclusive. We use the TYPHOON/PrISM survey to investigate the metallicity gradients along and beyond the bar region across the entire star-forming disk of five nearby galaxies. Using emission line diagrams to identify star-forming spaxels, we recover the global metallicity gradients ranging from -0.0162 to -0.073 dex/kpc with evidence that the galactic bars act as a…
We report Very Large Array B-configuration observations of the atomic hydrogen 21 cm line emission from the barred disk galaxy NGC 5597 at an angular resolution of 7.1" x 4.2". Using the resonance method, and assuming the ratio of the corotation radius to the semi-major axis of the stellar bar is unity ($\mathcal{R} \equiv R_{\rm CR}/a_{\rm bar} = 1$), we estimate the angular pattern speed of the stellar bar to be, $Ω_{\rm bar} \sim 15.3$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. This constant value for $Ω_{\rm bar}$ crosses $Ω_{\rm gas} + κ(R)/4$ at a distance $\sim 6.73$ kpc which would correspond to the spat…
Double bars are thought to be important features for secular evolution in the central regions of galaxies. However, observational evidence about their origin and evolution is still scarce. We report on the discovery of the first Box-Peanut (B/P) structure in an inner bar detected in the face-on galaxy NGC 1291. We use the integral field data obtained from the MUSE spectrograph within the TIMER project. The B/P structure is detected as bi-symmetric minima of the $h_4$ moment of the line-of-sight velocity distribution along the major axis of the inner bar, as expected from numerical simulations.…
Theories that attempt to explain the dynamical relationship between bar and spiral patterns in galactic disks make different predictions about the radial profile of the pattern speed. These are tested for the H-alpha bar and spiral patterns of NGC 1365. The radial profile of the pattern speed is measured by fitting mathematical models that are based on the Tremaine-Weinberg method. The results show convincing evidence for the bar rotating at a faster rate than the spiral pattern, inconsistent with a global wave mode or a manifold. There is evidence for mode coupling of the bar and spiral patte…
We present a two-step method to simulate and study non-circular motions in strongly barred galaxies. The first step is to constrain the initial parameters using a Bayesian analysis of each galaxy's azimuthally averaged rotation curve, the 3.6 $\rm μm$ surface brightness, and the gas surface density. The second step is to generate equilibrium models using the GalactICS code and evolve them via GADGET-2. The bar strengths and mock velocity maps of the resulting snapshots are compared to observations in order to determine the best representation of the galaxy. We test our method on the unbarred g…
Discoveries of low mass galaxy pairs and groups are increasing. Studies indicate that dwarf galaxy pairs are gas rich in the field and exhibit elevated star formation rates, suggestive of interactions. Lacking are dynamical models of observed dwarf galaxy pairs to disentangle the physical processes regulating their baryon cycles. We present new optical data and the first detailed theoretical model of an observed tidal encounter between two isolated low mass galaxies, NGC 4490 & NGC 4485. This system is an isolated analog of the Magellanic Clouds and is surrounded by a ~50 kpc extended HI envel…
A long slit spectrum from the barred galaxy NGC 1415 has been obtained with the 2.1m Guillermo Haro telescope in Cananea, Mexico at position angle 155d (EofN) and shows the kinematics of Na I D lines (in absorption) and Halpha, 6562.8 A, [NII] 6548 A, [NII] 6584 A, [SII] 6716 A, and [SII] 6731 A lines in emission from the central regions and the disk. Our previous Halpha continuum-free imaging of the central region showed mainly two central bright Halpha knots straddling the nucleus, and Halpha emission regions along the south-east and north-west inner spiral arms. Velocities of the Na I D abs…
We use WIYN High-resolution Infrared Camera (WHIRC) H (1.6 micron) band imaging, archival Spitzer, HST, and GALEX data, simulations and data from the literature to argue for the presence of a strong end-on bar in nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6503. The evidence consists of both photometric and kinematic signatures as well as resonant structures present in the galaxy which are most often associated with bars. These include a central peak followed by a plateau in the surface brightness profile, an extreme decrement in the central stellar velocity dispersion (a sigma-drop), and the presence of an inne…
Cloud-cloud collision (CCC) has been suggested as a mechanism to induce massive star formation. Recent simulations suggest that a CCC speed is different among galactic-scale environments, which is responsible for observed differences in star formation activity. In particular, a high-speed CCC is proposed as a cause of star formation suppression in the bar regions in barred spiral galaxies. Focusing on the strongly barred galaxy NGC1300, we investigate the CCC speed. We find the CCC speed in the bar and bar-end tend to be higher than that in the arm. The estimated CCC speed is $\sim20~\rm km~s^…
We conduct spectral line survey observations in the 3 mm band toward a spiral arm, a bar-end, and a nuclear region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 3627 with the IRAM 30 m telescope and the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. Additional observations are performed toward the spiral arm and the bar-end in the 2 mm band. We detect 8, 11, and 9 molecular species in the spiral arm, the bar-end, and the nuclear region, respectively. Star-formation activities are different among the three regions, and in particular, the nucleus of NGC 3627 is known as a LINER/Seyfert 2 type nucleus. In spite of these phys…
We study the stellar populations and assembly of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2903's bulge, bar, and outer disc using the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies IFS survey. We observe NGC 2903 with a spatial resolution of 185 pc using the Mitchell Spectrograph's 4.25 arcsec fibres at the 2.7 Harlan J. Smith telescope. Bulge-bar-disc decomposition on the 2MASS Ks-band image of NGC 2903 shows that it has ~6%, 6%, and 88%, of its stellar mass in the bulge, bar, and outer disc, respectively, and its bulge has a low Sersic index of ~0.27, suggestive of a disky bulge. We perform stellar population s…
We introduce a new binary detection technique, Binary INformation from Open Clusters using SEDs (binocs), which we show is able to determine reliable stellar multiplicity and masses over a much larger mass range than current approaches. This new technique determines accurate component masses of binary and single systems of the open clusters main sequence by comparing observed magnitudes from multiple photometric filters to synthetic star spectral energy distributions (SEDs) allowing systematically probing the binary population for low mass stars in clusters for 8 well-studied open clusters. We…
Context: Open clusters are key to studying the formation and evolution of the Galactic disc. However, there is a deficiency of radial velocity and chemical abundance determinations for open clusters in the literature. Aims: We intend to increase the number of determinations of radial velocities and metallicities from spectroscopy for open clusters. Methods: We acquired medium-resolution spectra (R~8000) in the infrared region Ca II triplet lines (~8500 AA) for several stars in five open clusters with the long-slit IDS spectrograph on the 2.5~m Isaac Newton Telescope (Roque de los Muchachos Obs…

We use mid-infrared 3.6 and 4.5microns imaging of NGC 3906 from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) to understand the nature of an unusual offset between its stellar bar and the photometric center of an otherwise regular, circular outer stellar disk. We measure an offset of ~720 pc between the center of the stellar bar and photometric center of the stellar disk; the bar center coincides with the kinematic center of the disk determined from previous HI observations. Although the undisturbed shape of the disk suggests that NGC 3906 has not undergone a significant merger eve…
On the basis of a new photometric analysis of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NCG 6822 based on observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained a new estimate of the extinction of two fields located in the southeast region of the galaxy. Because of significant differences in the distance estimates to NGC 6822 available in literature, we decided to provide an independent determination of the distance to this galaxy based on an updated and self-consistent theoretical calibration of the tip of the red giant branch brightness. …
We report five new measurements of central black hole masses based on STIS and WFPC2 observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and on axisymmetric, three-integral, Schwarzschild orbit-library kinematic models. We selected a sample of galaxies within a narrow range in velocity dispersion that cover a range of galaxy parameters (including Hubble type and core/power-law surface density profile) where we expected to be able to resolve the galaxy's sphere of influence based on the predicted value of the black hole mass from the M-sigma relation. We find masses in units of 10^8 solar masses for t…
We present new deep ($σ\sim6~μ$Jy) radio images of the HH~124~IRS Radio Cluster at 4.8 and 7.5 GHz. We detect a total of 50 radio sources, most of them compact. Variability and spectral indices were analyzed in order to determine the nature of the sources and of their radio emission. A proper motion study was also performed for several of these radio sources using radio observation previously reported. Our analysis shows that 11 radio sources can be related with Galactic objects, most of them probably young stars. Interestingly, eight of these sources are in an area less than 1 square arcminut…
We present the analysis of 34 light curves in $V$ and $I$ of 17 giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201, to check if such stars are variable and if their variability has some kind of impact on the iron abundance as obtained from spectroscopic measurements. First, we computed the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and Phase Dispersion Minimization periodograms on the sample to check if the stars were variables. In this way, 7 stars of the sample were found to be non-variable, 2 stars are considered as possible variables, and 8 stars were found to be variable, with periods ranging from $0.0881\pm0.00…
We report on the extinction properties in the fields around the clusters NGC 1854, NGC 1856, and NGC 1858 in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The colour-magnitude diagrams of the stars in all these regions show an elongated red giant clump that reveals a variable amount of extinction across these fields, ranging from Av~0.2 to Av~1.9, including Galactic foreground extinction. The extinction properties nonetheless are remarkably uniform. The slope of the reddening vectors measured in the (V-I,V) and (B-I,B) colour-magnitude planes is fully in line with the Av/E(B-V)~5.5 value found in the…
We present the first results from the GeMS/GSAOI Galactic Globular Cluster Survey (G4CS) of the Milky-Way globular clusters (GCs) NGC 3201 and NGC 2298. Using the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI), in tandem with the Gemini Multi-conjugate adaptive optics System (GeMS) on the 8.1-meter Gemini-South telescope, we collected deep near-IR observations of both clusters, resolving their constituent stellar populations down to $K_s\simeq21$ Vega mag. Point spread function (PSF) photometry was performed on the data using spatially-variable PSFs to generate $JHK_{s}$ photometric catalogues fo…
We report multifrequency phase-referenced observations of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 4261, which has prominent two-sided jets, using the Very Long Baseline Array at 1.4-43 GHz. We measured radio core positions showing observing frequency dependences (known as "core shift") in both approaching jets and counter jets. The limit of the core position as the frequency approaches infinity, which suggests a jet base, is separated by 82$\pm$16 $μ$as upstream in projection, corresponding to (310$\pm$60)Rs (Rs: Schwarzschild radius) as a deprojected distance, from the 43 GHz core in the approaching jet.…
